  33 href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu and Skolelinux</a>
  34 community.  I am running short on people willing to be interviewed, so
  35 if you know about someone I should interview, Please send me an email.
  36 After asking for many months, I finally managed to lure another one of
  37 the people behind the German
  38 "<a href="http://wiki.it-zukunft-schule.de/">IT-Zukunft Schule</a>"
  39 project out from maternity leave to conduct an interview.  Give a warm

  42 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?</strong></p>

  44 <p>I am a 39-year-old woman living in the very north of Germany near
  45 Denmark. I live in a patchwork family with "my man" Mike Gabriel, my
  46 two daughters, Mikes daughter and Mikes and my rather newborn son.

  48 <p>At the moment - because of our little baby - I am spending most of
  49 the day by being a caring and organising mom for all the kids.
  50 Besides that I am really involved into and occupied with several inner
  51 growth processes: New born souls always bring the whole familiar
  52 system into movement and that needs time and focus ;-).  We are also
  53 in the middle of buying a house and moving to it.</p>

  55 <p>In 2013 I will work again in my job in a German foundation for
  56 nature conservation. I am doing public relation work there.  Besides
  57 that - and that is the connection to Skolelinux / Debian Edu - I am
  58 working in our own school project "IT-Zukunft Schule" in North
  59 Germany. I am responsible for the quality assurance, the customer
  60 relationship management and the communication processes in the
  61 project.</p>

  63 <p>Since 2001 I constantly have been training myself in communication
  64 and leadership. Besides that I am a forester, a landscaping gardener
  65 and a yoga teacher.</p>

  67 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
  68 project?</strong></p>

  70 <p>I fell in love with Mike ;-).</p>

  72 <p>Very soon after getting to know him I was completely enrolled into
  73 Free Software.  At this time Mike did IT-services for one newly
  74 founded school in Kiel. Other schools in Kiel needed concepts for
  75 their IT environment.  Often when Mike came home from working at the
  76 newly founded school I found myself listening to his complaints about
  77 several points where the communication with the schools head or the
  78 teachers did not work.  So we were clear that he would not work for
  79 one more school if we did not set up a structure for communication
  80 between him, the schools head, the teachers, the students and the
  81 parents.</p>

  83 <p>Together with our friend and hardware supplier Andreas Buchholz we
  84 started to get an overview of free software solutions suitable for
  85 schools. One day before Christmas 2010 Mike and I had a date with Kurt
  86 Gramlich in Gütersloh. As Kurt and I are really interested in building
  87 networks of people and in being in communication we dived into
  88 Skolelinux and brought it to the first grammar schools in Northern
  89 Germany.</p>

  95 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
  96 Edu?</strong></p>

  98 <p>First I have to say: I cannot answer this question technically. My
  99 answer comes rather from a social point of view.</p>

 101 <p>The biggest advantage of Skolelinux / Debian Edu I see is the large
 102 and strong international community of Debian Developers in the
 103 background which is very alive and connected over mailinglists, blogs
 104 and meetings. My constant feeling for the Debian Community is: If
 105 something does not work they will somehow fix it. All is well
 106 ;-). This is of course a user experience.  What I also get as a big
 107 advantage of Skolelinux / Debian Edu is that everybody who uses it and
 108 works with it can also contribute to it - that includes students,
 109 teachers, parents...</p>

 111 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
 112 Edu?</strong></p>
 113
 114 <p>I will answer this question relating to the internal structure of
 115 Skolelinux / Debian Edu.</p>

 117 <p>What I see as a major disadvantage is that there is a gap between
 118 the group of developers for Debian Edu and the people who make the
 119 marketing, that means the people that bring Skolelinux to the
 120 schools. There is a lack of communication between these two groups and
 121 I think that does not really work for Skolelinux / Debian Edu.</p>

 123 <p>Further I appreciate that Skolelinux / Debian Edu is known as a
 124 do-ocracy. Nevertheless I keep asking myself if at some points a
 125 democracy or some kind of hierarchical project structure would be good
 126 and helpful.  I am also missing some kind of contact between the
 127 Skolelinux / Debian Edu communities in Europe or on an international
 128 level. I think it would be good if there was more sharing between the
 129 different countries using Skolelinux / Debian Edu.</p>

 131 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?</strong></p>
 132
 133 <p>On my laptop I am still using an Ubuntu 10.04 with a Gnome Desktop
 134 on.  As applications I use Openoffice.org, Gedit, Firefox, Pidgin,
 135 LaTeX and GnuCash. For mails I am using Horde. And I am really fond of
 136 my N900 running with Maemo.</p>

 138 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
 139 get schools to use free software?</strong></p>
 140
 141 <p>I am really convinced that in our school project "IT-Zukunft
 142 Schule" we have developed (and keep developing) a great way to get
 143 schools to use Free Software. We have written a detailed concept for
 144 that so I cannot explain the whole thing here. But in a nutshell the
 145 strategy has three crucial pillars:</p>

 149 <li>We really take time to get what sort of stories, questions and
 150 concerns the schools head and the teachers have about using different
 151 kinds of IT and we take time to enrol them into Free Software.</li>

 153 <li>Our solution for schools is never just technical. In the centre
 154 are always the people who are going to use the software. From the very
 155 beginning of the planning for a school, we tell the schools head that
 156 they are paying us not only for a technical solution for their school,
 157 they also pay us for leading all the communication processes
 158 needed. If they do not want that, we are not working with them because
 159 we cannot give a guarantee for the quality of our work then.</li>

 161 <li>Another focus lies in the training of teachers and students in
 162 co-administrating the IT-System at their school. They start getting in
 163 contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu community and they get the
 164 offer to become more and more independent from us.</li>

 202 til å sikre noe som helst, gitt at elektroniske pass har bilder av
 203 fingeravtrykkene elektronisk lesbart via RFID, og en må anta bildene
 204 blir lest og arkivert ved enhver grensepassering en foretar seg.  I
 205 tillegg kan RFID-pass leses på betydelig avstand (10-20 meter sier de
 206 som har testet, f.eks.

 222 på vidvanke, og en kan dermed ikke i god tro anta at fingeravtrykk kun

 289         <p>Slashdot just ran a story about the European Central Bank (ECB)
 290 <a href="http://www.ecb.europa.eu/pub/pdf/other/virtualcurrencyschemes201210en.pdf">releasing
 291 a report (PDF)</a> about virtual currencies and
 292 <a href="http://www.bitcoin.org/">bitcoin</a>.  It is interesting to
 293 see how a member of the bitcoin community
 294 <a href="http://blog.bitinstant.com/blog/2012/10/30/the-ecb-report-on-bitcoin-and-virtual-currencies.html">receive
 295 the report</a>.  As for the future, I suspect the central banks and
 296 the governments will outlaw bitcoin if it gain any popularity, to avoid
 297 competition.  My thoughts go to the
 298 <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wörgl">Wörgl experiment</a> with
 299 negative inflation on cash which was such a success that it was
 300 terminated by the Austrian National Bank in 1933.  A successful
 301 alternative would be a threat to the current money system and gain
 302 powerful forces to work against it.</p>

 304 <p>While checking out the current status of bitcoin, I also discovered
 305 that the community already seem to have
 306 <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/27/3271637/bitcoin-savings-trust-pyramid-scheme-shuts-down">experienced
 307 its first pyramid game / Ponzi scheme</a>.  Not very surprising, given
 308 how members of "small" communities tend to trust each other.  I guess
 309 enterprising crocks will try again and again, as they do anywhere
 310 wealth is available.</p>

 331         <p>I 2009 bidro vi i <a href="http://www.nuug.no/">NUUG</a> til at
 332 <a href="http://www.frikanalen.no/">Frikanalen</a> ble
 333 <a href="http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Frikanalen_og_jul_i_studentr_det.html">tilgjengelig
 334 i et fritt og åpent standardisert videoformat</a>.  Bakgrunnen var at
 335 vi i NUUG likte tanken på «Youtube på TV», der enhver borger kunne få
 336 mulighet til å kringkaste sin video på TV, og NUUG ble medlem i
 337 Frikanalen for å støtte dette arbeidet.  Frikanalen er borger-TV, der
 338 alle kan være sin egen redaktør og lage TV uten solid finansielle
 339 muskler.  Siden den gang har vi bistått kanalen på ulikt vis, blant
 340 annet med å hjelpe til med å utvikle en løsning basert på fri
 341 programvare for drift av TV-kanalen.  Dette utviklingsarbeidet pågår
 342 fortsatt, men det er god fremgang og godt håp om å få på plass en
 343 webbasert løsning for styring av TV-kanalen basert på fri programvare.
 344 Dagens produksjonsløsning er basert på Windows og proprietær
 345 programvare, et resultat av at kulturdepartementet krevde at
 346 Frikanalen kom på lufta veldig raskt da departementet overtalte
 347 Frivillighet Norge til å snappe opp konseptet.  Dagens
 348 produksjonsløsning er dyr i drift, og en fri programvareløsning bør
 349 kutte kostnadene litt.  Men det er fortsatt dyrt å kjøpe tilgang til å
 350 sende ut på RiksTV og andre TV-distributører, noe som spiser av
 351 kanalens begrensede midler.</p>

 353 <p>Nytt for 2013 er dessverre at kulturdepartementet kutter all støtte
 354 til Frikanalen.  Mens det i
 355 <a href="http://www.regjeringen.no/pages/35168579/PDFS/PRP201120120001KUDDDDPDFS.pdf">statsbudsjettet
 356 for 2012</a> sto følgende (side 55):</p>

 360 Det foreslås et driftstilskudd på 1 mill. kroner i 2012 til
 361 Frikanalen. Kulturdepartementet har inngått avtale om investerings- og

 364 tilstreber å være en reell ytringskanal for samtlige partier og lister

 380 skulle klare å realisere målet om å være en opplæringsarena for

 384 betydelig siden Frikanalen ble etablert. Det er supplert og til dels
 385 erstattet av andre kommunikasjonskanaler, som det også er

 390 <p>Når en ser bort fra den merkelige begrunnelsen, da Frikanalen så
 391 vidt jeg vet aldri har tatt mål av seg «å være en opplæringsarena for
 392 frivillige organisasjoner som ville lære å bruke billedspråk», så er
 393 det veldig trist at kulturdepartementet kutter støtten.</p>

 395 <p>Fundamentet for Frikanalen ble lagt da Stortinget vedtok
 396 innføringen av det digitale bakkenettet.  En oversikt over
 397 <a href="http://www.openchannel.no/stortinget.html">det Stortinget
 398 skrev</a> da finnes på nettsidene til åpen kanal.  Der het det blant
 399 annet om «åpne kanaler»:</p>

 403 Et annet flertall, alle unntatt medlemmene fra Fremskrittspartiet, vil
 404 også peke på at man ut fra ønsket om en bredt anlagt offentlig debatt,
 405 må se på den faktiske tilgjengelighet allmennheten har til
 406 TV-mediet. I mange land har man ønsket å sikre denne tilgangen gjennom
 407 egen lovgivning som forplikter allmennkringkastere eller distributører

 421 Frikanalen, bli medlem, lage og sende programmer der.</p>
