>I use the
<a href=

15 to handle my fairly large DVD collection. It is a nice command line
16 tool to get details about a DVD, like title, tracks, track length,
17 etc, in XML, perl or human readable format. But lsdvd have not seen
18 any new development since
2006 and had a few irritating bugs affecting
19 its use with some DVDs. Upstream seemed to be dead, and in January I
20 sent a small probe asking for a version control repository for the
21 project, without any reply. But I use it regularly and would like to
22 get
<a href=
"https://packages.qa.debian.org/lsdvd
">an updated version
23 into Debian
</a
>. So two weeks ago I tried harder to get in touch with
24 the project admin, and after getting a reply from him explaining that
25 he was no longer interested in the project, I asked if I could take
26 over. And yesterday, I became project admin.
</p

28 <p
>I
've been in touch with a Gentoo developer and the Debian
29 maintainer interested in joining forces to maintain the upstream
30 project, and I hope we can get a new release out fairly quickly,
31 collecting the patches spread around on the internet into on place.
32 I
've added the relevant Debian patches to the freshly created git
33 repository, and expect the Gentoo patches to make it too. If you got
34 a DVD collection and care about command line tools, check out

NRK-artikkelen forteller at
276 denne informasjonen i dag kun brukes til å koble to
277 AutoPASS-brikkepasseringer passeringer sammen for å beregne
291 utgifter (dyrere bompassering). Vern om privatsfæren koster i disse

304 <description><p
>The
<a href=
"https://www.debian.org/
">Debian
</a
> installer could be
305 a lot quicker. When we install more than
2000 packages in
306 <a href=
"http://www.skolelinux.org/
">Skolelinux / Debian Edu
</a
> using
307 tasksel in the installer, unpacking the binary packages take forever.
308 A part of the slow I/O issue was discussed in
309 <a href=
"https://bugs.debian.org/
613428">bug #
613428</a
> about too
310 much file system sync-ing done by dpkg, which is the package
311 responsible for unpacking the binary packages. Other parts (like code
312 executed by postinst scripts) might also sync to disk during
313 installation. All this sync-ing to disk do not really make sense to
314 me. If the machine crash half-way through, I start over, I do not try
315 to salvage the half installed system. So the failure sync-ing is
316 supposed to protect against, hardware or system crash, is not really
317 relevant while the installer is running.
</p
>
319 <p
>A few days ago, I thought of a way to get rid of all the file
320 system sync()-ing in a fairly non-intrusive way, without the need to
321 change the code in several packages. The idea is not new, but I have
322 not heard anyone propose the approach using dpkg-divert before. It
323 depend on the small and clever package
324 <a href=
"https://packages.qa.debian.org/eatmydata
">eatmydata
</a
>, which
325 uses LD_PRELOAD to replace the system functions for syncing data to
326 disk with functions doing nothing, thus allowing programs to live
327 dangerous while speeding up disk I/O significantly. Instead of
328 modifying the implementation of dpkg, apt and tasksel (which are the
329 packages responsible for selecting, fetching and installing packages),
330 it occurred to me that we could just divert the programs away, replace
331 them with a simple shell wrapper calling
332 "eatmydata
&nbsp;$program
&nbsp;$@
", to get the same effect.
333 Two days ago I decided to test the idea, and wrapped up a simple
334 implementation for the Debian Edu udeb.
</p
>
336 <p
>The effect was stunning. In my first test it reduced the running
337 time of the pkgsel step (installing tasks) from
64 to less than
44
338 minutes (
20 minutes shaved off the installation) on an old Dell
339 Latitude D505 machine. I am not quite sure what the optimised time
340 would have been, as I messed up the testing a bit, causing the debconf
341 priority to get low enough for two questions to pop up during
342 installation. As soon as I saw the questions I moved the installation
343 along, but do not know how long the question were holding up the
344 installation. I did some more measurements using Debian Edu Jessie,
345 and got these results. The time measured is the time stamp in
346 /var/log/syslog between the
"pkgsel: starting tasksel
" and the
347 "pkgsel: finishing up
" lines, if you want to do the same measurement
348 yourself. In Debian Edu, the tasksel dialog do not show up, and the
349 timing thus do not depend on how quickly the user handle the tasksel

>The test is done using a netinst ISO on a USB stick, so some of the
399 time is spent downloading packages. The connection to the Internet
400 was
100Mbit/s during testing, so downloading should not be a
401 significant factor in the measurement. Download typically took a few
402 seconds to a few minutes, depending on the amount of packages being
405 <p
>The speedup is implemented by using two hooks in
406 <a href=
"https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
">Debian
407 Installer
</a
>, the pre-pkgsel.d hook to set up the diverts, and the
408 finish-install.d hook to remove the divert at the end of the
409 installation. I picked the pre-pkgsel.d hook instead of the
410 post-base-installer.d hook because I test using an ISO without the
411 eatmydata package included, and the post-base-installer.d hook in
412 Debian Edu can only operate on packages included in the ISO. The
413 negative effect of this is that I am unable to activate this
414 optimization for the kernel installation step in d-i. If the code is
415 moved to the post-base-installer.d hook, the speedup would be larger
416 for the entire installation.

>The complete and free “out of the box” software solution for
845 schools,
<a href=

847 involved is Bernd Zeitzen, who show up on the project mailing lists
848 from time to time with interesting questions and tips on how to adjust
849 the setup. I managed to interview him this summer.
</p
>
851 <p
><strong
>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong
></p
>
853 <p
>My name is Bernd Zeitzen and I
'm married with Hedda, a self
854 employed physiotherapist. My former profession is tool maker, but I
855 haven
't worked for
30 years in this job.
30 years ago I started to
856 support my wife and become her officeworker and a few years later the
857 administrator for a small computer network, today based on Ubuntu
858 Server (Samba, OpenVPN). For her daily work she has to use Windows
859 Desktops because the software she needs to organize her business only
860 works with Windows . :-(
</p
>
862 <p
>In
1988 we started with one PC and DOS, then I learned to use
863 Windows
98,
2000, XP, …,
8, Ubuntu, MacOSX. Today we are running a
864 Linux server with
6 Windows clients and
10 persons (teacher of
865 children with special needs, speech therapist, occupational therapist,
866 psychologist and officeworkers) using our Samba shares via OpenVPN to
867 work with the documentations of our patients.
</p
>
869 <p
><strong
>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
870 project?
</strong
></p
>
872 <p
>Two years ago a friend of mine asked me, if I want to get a job in
873 his school (
<a href=
"http://www.gymnasium-harsewinkel.de/
">Gymnasium
874 Harsewinkel
</a
>). They started with Skolelinux / Debian Edu and they
875 were looking for people to give support to the teachers using the
876 software and the network and teaching the pupils increasing their
877 computer skills in optional lessons. I
'm spending
4-
6 hours a week
878 with this job.
</p
>
880 <p
><strong
>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
881 Edu?
</strong
></p
>
883 <p
>The independence.
</p
>
885 <p
>First: Every person is allowed to use, share and develop the
886 software. Even if you are poor, you are allowed to use the software
887 included in Skolelinux/Debian Edu and all the other Free Software.
</p
>
889 <p
>Second: The software runs on old machines and this gives us the
890 possibility to recycle computers, weeded out from offices. The
891 servers and desktops are running for more than two years and they are
892 working reliable.
</p
>
894 <p
>We have two servers (one tjener and one terminal server),
45
895 workstations in three classrooms and seven laptops as a mobile
896 solution for all classrooms. These machines are all booting from the
897 terminal server. In the moment we are installing
30 laptops as mobile
898 workstations. Then the pupils have the possibility to work with these
899 machines in their classrooms. Internet access is realized by a WLAN
900 router, connected to the schools network. This is all done without a
901 dedicated system administrator or a computer science teacher.
</p
>
903 <p
><strong
>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
904 Edu?
</strong
></p
>
906 <p
>Teachers and pupils are Windows users.
&lt;Irony on
&gt; And Linux
907 isn
't cool. It
's software for freaks using the command line.
&lt;Irony
908 off
&gt; They don
't realize the stability of the system.
</p
>
910 <p
><strong
>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong
></p
>
912 <p
>Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Ubuntu Server
12.04 (Samba,
913 Apache, MySQL, Joomla!, … and Skolelinux / Debian Edu)
</p
>
915 <p
><strong
>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
916 get schools to use free software?
</strong
></p
>
918 <p
>In Germany we have the situation: every school is free to decide
919 which software they want to use. This decision is influenced by
920 teachers who learned to use Windows and MS Office. They buy a PC with
921 Windows preinstalled and an additional testing version of MS
922 Office. They don
't know about the possibility to use Free Software
923 instead. Another problem are the publisher of school books. They
924 develop their software, added to the school books, for Windows.

>The
<a href=
"http://www.skolelinux.org/
">Debian Edu / Skolelinux
968 project
</a
> provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
969 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
970 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation. This text is about how the
971 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.
</p
>
973 <p
>One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
974 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
975 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
976 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
977 in sync. And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
978 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
979 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
980 edit the documentation using a web browser. We also want it to be
981 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
982 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
983 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
986 <p
>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
987 <a href=
"https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/
">Debian
988 wiki
</a
>, as several wiki pages written in English. It consist of one
989 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
990 for each chapter, and finally one
"collection page
" gluing all the
991 chapters together into one large web page (aka
992 <a href=
"https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne
">the
993 AllInOne page
</a
>). The AllInOne page is the one used for further
994 processing and translations. Thanks to the fact that the
995 <a href=
"http://moinmo.in/
">MoinMoin
</a
> installation on
996 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
997 <a href=
"http://www.docbook.org/
">the Docbook format
</a
>, we can fetch
998 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
999 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
1000 manual. This process also download images and transform image
1001 references to use the locally downloaded images. The generated
1002 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
1003 using the
<tt
>documentation/scripts/get_manual
</tt
> program, and the
1004 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
1005 a handfull of images. The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
1006 and epub versions of the English manual. This is the basic step of
1007 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
1008 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
1009 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.
</p
>
1011 <p
>But English documentation is not enough for us. We want translated
1012 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
1013 track the English original. For this we use the
1014 <a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html
">poxml
</a
> package,
1015 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
1016 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
1017 translation tools used by those translating free software. The pot
1018 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
1019 files), which the translations update with the native language
1020 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
1021 original. The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
1022 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
1023 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
1024 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml). This translated (or partly
1025 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
1026 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
1027 of the documentation.
</p
>
1029 <p
>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files. We
1031 <a href=
"http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/
">lokalize
</a
>,
1032 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
1033 <a href=
"http://pootle.translatehouse.org/
">Poodle
</a
> or
1034 <a href=
"https://www.transifex.com/
">Transifex
</a
>. All we care about
1035 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository. Updated
1036 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
1037 <a href=
"https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc
">bug reports
1038 against the debian-edu-doc package
</a
>.
</p
>
1040 <p
>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
1041 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
1042 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
1043 this regard). For this we transform the original PNG images to the
1044 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
1045 translated images by storing translated versions in
1046 images/$LANGUAGECODE/. I am a bit unsure about the details here. The
1047 package maintainers know more.
</p
>
1049 <p
>If you wonder what the result look like, we provide
1050 <a href=
"http://maintainer.skolelinux.org/debian-edu-doc/
">the content
1051 of the documentation packages on the web
