14

I use the lsdvd tool
15 to handle my fairly large DVD collection. It is a nice command line
16 tool to get details about a DVD, like title, tracks, track length,
17 etc, in XML, perl or human readable format. But lsdvd have not seen
18 any new development since 2006 and had a few irritating bugs affecting
19 its use with some DVDs. Upstream seemed to be dead, and in January I
20 sent a small probe asking for a version control repository for the
21 project, without any reply. But I use it regularly and would like to
22 get an updated version
23 into Debian. So two weeks ago I tried harder to get in touch with
24 the project admin, and after getting a reply from him explaining that
25 he was no longer interested in the project, I asked if I could take
26 over. And yesterday, I became project admin.

27
28
I've been in touch with a Gentoo developer and the Debian
29 maintainer interested in joining forces to maintain the upstream
30 project, and I hope we can get a new release out fairly quickly,
31 collecting the patches spread around on the internet into on place.
32 I've added the relevant Debian patches to the freshly created git
33 repository, and expect the Gentoo patches to make it too. If you got
34 a DVD collection and care about command line tools, check out
35 the git source and join
36 the project mailing
37 list. :)

46

51 ei
52 skibru på Sollihøgda:

53
54

55
56
Boksen er tydelig merket «Kapsch >>>», logoen til
57 det sveitsiske selskapet Kapsch som
58 blant annet lager sensorsystemer for veitrafikk.

246

247
248
259 Ciber
263 «Sjekk
264 dette hvis du vil unngå kø». Artikkelen henviser til vegvesenets
265 nettside
266 reisetider.no
267 som har en
268 kartside

NRK-artikkelen forteller at
276 denne informasjonen i dag kun brukes til å koble to
277 AutoPASS-brikkepasseringer passeringer sammen for å beregne

300
Speeding up the Debian installer using eatmydata and dpkg-divert

303

304

The Debian installer could be
305 a lot quicker. When we install more than 2000 packages in
306 Skolelinux / Debian Edu using
307 tasksel in the installer, unpacking the binary packages take forever.
308 A part of the slow I/O issue was discussed in
309 bug #613428 about too
310 much file system sync-ing done by dpkg, which is the package
311 responsible for unpacking the binary packages. Other parts (like code
312 executed by postinst scripts) might also sync to disk during
313 installation. All this sync-ing to disk do not really make sense to
314 me. If the machine crash half-way through, I start over, I do not try
315 to salvage the half installed system. So the failure sync-ing is
316 supposed to protect against, hardware or system crash, is not really
317 relevant while the installer is running.

318
319
A few days ago, I thought of a way to get rid of all the file
320 system sync()-ing in a fairly non-intrusive way, without the need to
321 change the code in several packages. The idea is not new, but I have
322 not heard anyone propose the approach using dpkg-divert before. It
323 depend on the small and clever package
324 eatmydata, which
325 uses LD_PRELOAD to replace the system functions for syncing data to
326 disk with functions doing nothing, thus allowing programs to live
327 dangerous while speeding up disk I/O significantly. Instead of
328 modifying the implementation of dpkg, apt and tasksel (which are the
329 packages responsible for selecting, fetching and installing packages),
330 it occurred to me that we could just divert the programs away, replace
331 them with a simple shell wrapper calling
332 "eatmydata $program $@", to get the same effect.
333 Two days ago I decided to test the idea, and wrapped up a simple
334 implementation for the Debian Edu udeb.

335
336
The effect was stunning. In my first test it reduced the running
337 time of the pkgsel step (installing tasks) from 64 to less than 44
338 minutes (20 minutes shaved off the installation) on an old Dell
339 Latitude D505 machine. I am not quite sure what the optimised time
340 would have been, as I messed up the testing a bit, causing the debconf
341 priority to get low enough for two questions to pop up during
342 installation. As soon as I saw the questions I moved the installation
343 along, but do not know how long the question were holding up the
344 installation. I did some more measurements using Debian Edu Jessie,
345 and got these results. The time measured is the time stamp in
346 /var/log/syslog between the "pkgsel: starting tasksel" and the
347 "pkgsel: finishing up" lines, if you want to do the same measurement
348 yourself. In Debian Edu, the tasksel dialog do not show up, and the
349 timing thus do not depend on how quickly the user handle the tasksel
350 dialog.

351
352

396

397
398
The test is done using a netinst ISO on a USB stick, so some of the
399 time is spent downloading packages. The connection to the Internet
400 was 100Mbit/s during testing, so downloading should not be a
401 significant factor in the measurement. Download typically took a few
402 seconds to a few minutes, depending on the amount of packages being
403 installed.

404
405
The speedup is implemented by using two hooks in
406 Debian
407 Installer, the pre-pkgsel.d hook to set up the diverts, and the
408 finish-install.d hook to remove the divert at the end of the
409 installation. I picked the pre-pkgsel.d hook instead of the
410 post-base-installer.d hook because I test using an ISO without the
411 eatmydata package included, and the post-base-installer.d hook in
412 Debian Edu can only operate on packages included in the ISO. The
413 negative effect of this is that I am unable to activate this
414 optimization for the kernel installation step in d-i. If the code is
415 moved to the post-base-installer.d hook, the speedup would be larger
416 for the entire installation.

417
418
I've implemented this in the
419 debian-edu-install
420 git repository, and plan to provide the optimization as part of the
421 Debian Edu installation. If you want to test this yourself, you can
422 create two files in the installer (or in an udeb). One shell script
423 need do go into /usr/lib/pre-pkgsel.d/, with content like this:

424
425

426 #!/bin/sh
427 set -e
428 . /usr/share/debconf/confmodule
429 info() {
430 logger -t my-pkgsel "info: $*"
431 }
432 error() {
433 logger -t my-pkgsel "error: $*"
434 }
435 override_install() {
436 apt-install eatmydata || true
437 if [ -x /target/usr/bin/eatmydata ] ; then
438 for bin in dpkg apt-get aptitude tasksel ; do
439 file=/usr/bin/$bin
440 # Test that the file exist and have not been diverted already.
441 if [ -f /target$file ] ; then
442 info "diverting $file using eatmydata"
443 printf "#!/bin/sh\neatmydata $bin.distrib \"\$@\"\n" \
444 > /target$file.edu
445 chmod 755 /target$file.edu
446 in-target dpkg-divert --package debian-edu-config \
447 --rename --quiet --add $file
448 ln -sf ./$bin.edu /target$file
449 else
450 error "unable to divert $file, as it is missing."
451 fi
452 done
453 else
454 error "unable to find /usr/bin/eatmydata after installing the eatmydata pacage"
455 fi
456 }
457
458 override_install
459

460
461
To clean up, another shell script should go into
462 /usr/lib/finish-install.d/ with code like this:
463
464

465 #! /bin/sh -e
466 . /usr/share/debconf/confmodule
467 error() {
468 logger -t my-finish-install "error: $@"
469 }
470 remove_install_override() {
471 for bin in dpkg apt-get aptitude tasksel ; do
472 file=/usr/bin/$bin
473 if [ -x /target$file.edu ] ; then
474 rm /target$file
475 in-target dpkg-divert --package debian-edu-config \
476 --rename --quiet --remove $file
477 rm /target$file.edu
478 else
479 error "Missing divert for $file."
480 fi
481 done
482 sync # Flush file buffers before continuing
483 }
484
485 remove_install_override
486

487
488
In Debian Edu, I placed both code fragments in a separate script
489 edu-eatmydata-install and call it from the pre-pkgsel.d and
490 finish-install.d scripts.

491
492
By now you might ask if this change should get into the normal
493 Debian installer too? I suspect it should, but am not sure the
494 current debian-installer coordinators find it useful enough. It also
495 depend on the side effects of the change. I'm not aware of any, but I
496 guess we will see if the change is safe after some more testing.
497 Perhaps there is some package in Debian depending on sync() and
498 fsync() having effect? Perhaps it should go into its own udeb, to
499 allow those of us wanting to enable it to do so without affecting
500 everyone.

501
502
Update 2014-09-24: Since a few days ago, enabling this optimization
503 will break installation of all programs using gnutls because of
504 <ahref="https://bugs.debian.org/702711">bug #702711. An updated
505 eatmydata package in Debian will solve it.

513

514

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a talk with the
515 Norwegian Unix User Group about
516 the
517 OpenPGP keyserver pool sks-keyservers.net, and was very happy to
518 learn that there is a large set of publicly available key servers to
519 use when looking for peoples public key. So far I have used
520 subkeys.pgp.net, and some times wwwkeys.nl.pgp.net when the former
521 were misbehaving, but those days are ended. The servers I have used
522 up until yesterday have been slow and some times unavailable. I hope
523 those problems are gone now.

524
525
Behind the round robin DNS entry of the
526 sks-keyservers.net service
527 there is a pool of more than 100 keyservers which are checked every
528 day to ensure they are well connected and up to date. It must be
529 better than what I have used so far. :)

530
531
Yesterdays speaker told me that the service is the default
532 keyserver provided by the default configuration in GnuPG, but this do
533 not seem to be used in Debian. Perhaps it should?

534
535
Anyway, I've updated my ~/.gnupg/options file to now include this
536 line:

537
538

539 keyserver pool.sks-keyservers.net
540

541
542
With GnuPG version 2 one can also locate the keyserver using SRV
543 entries in DNS. Just for fun, I did just that at work, so now every
544 user of GnuPG at the University of Oslo should find a OpenGPG
545 keyserver automatically should their need it:

546
547

548 % host -t srv _pgpkey-http._tcp.uio.no
549 _pgpkey-http._tcp.uio.no has SRV record 0 100 11371 pool.sks-keyservers.net.
550 %
551

552
553
Now if only
554 the
555 HKP lookup protocol supported finding signature paths, I would be
556 very happy. It can look up a given key or search for a user ID, but I
557 normally do not want that, but to find a trust path from my key to
558 another key. Given a user ID or key ID, I would like to find (and
559 download) the keys representing a signature path from my key to the
560 key in question, to be able to get a trust path between the two keys.
561 This is as far as I can tell not possible today. Perhaps something
562 for a future version of the protocol?

567
Do you need an agreement with MPEG-LA to publish and broadcast H.264 video in Norway?

570

571

Two years later, I am still not sure if it is legal here in Norway
572 to use or publish a video in H.264 or MPEG4 format edited by the
573 commercially licensed video editors, without limiting the use to
574 create "personal" or "non-commercial" videos or get a license
575 agreement with MPEG LA. If one
576 want to publish and broadcast video in a non-personal or commercial
577 setting, it might be that those tools can not be used, or that video
578 format can not be used, without breaking their copyright license. I
579 am not sure.
580 Back
581 then, I found that the copyright license terms for Adobe Premiere
582 and Apple Final Cut Pro both specified that one could not use the
583 program to produce anything else without a patent license from MPEG
584 LA. The issue is not limited to those two products, though. Other
585 much used products like those from Avid and Sorenson Media have terms
586 of use are similar to those from Adobe and Apple. The complicating
587 factor making me unsure if those terms have effect in Norway or not is
588 that the patents in question are not valid in Norway, but copyright
589 licenses are.

590
591
These are the terms for Avid Artist Suite, according to their
592 published

617 and/or use, such additional license may be obtained from MPEG LA,
618 LLC. See http://www.mpegla.com for additional details.

619
620
18.3. H.264/AVC. H.264/AVC technology may be included with the
621 software. MPEG LA, L.L.C. requires this notice:

622
623
This product is licensed under the AVC patent portfolio license for
624 the personal use of a consumer or other uses in which it does not
625 receive remuneration to (i) encode video in compliance with the AVC

634 personal or non-commercial purposes.

635
636
The Sorenson Media software have
637 similar terms:

638
639

656 MPEG-4 Mobile Data Encoder, and/or MPEG-4 Unique Use Encoder: Any such
657 product is licensed under the MPEG-4 systems patent portfolio license
658 for encoding in compliance with the MPEG-4 systems standard, except
659 that an additional license and payment of royalties are necessary for
660 encoding in connection with (i) data stored or replicated in physical
661 media which is paid for on a title by title basis and/or (ii) data
662 which is paid for on a title by title basis and is transmitted to an
663 end user for permanent storage and/or use. Such additional license may
664 be obtained from MPEG LA, LLC. See http://www.mpegla.com for
665 additional details.

666
667

668
669
Some free software like
670 Handbrake and
671 FFMPEG uses GPL/LGPL licenses and do
672 not have any such terms included, so for those, there is no
673 requirement to limit the use to personal and non-commercial.

844

The complete and free “out of the box” software solution for
845 schools, Debian Edu /
846 Skolelinux, is used quite a lot in Germany, and one of the people
847 involved is Bernd Zeitzen, who show up on the project mailing lists
848 from time to time with interesting questions and tips on how to adjust
849 the setup. I managed to interview him this summer.

850
851
Who are you, and how do you spend your days?

852
853
My name is Bernd Zeitzen and I'm married with Hedda, a self
854 employed physiotherapist. My former profession is tool maker, but I
855 haven't worked for 30 years in this job. 30 years ago I started to
856 support my wife and become her officeworker and a few years later the
857 administrator for a small computer network, today based on Ubuntu
858 Server (Samba, OpenVPN). For her daily work she has to use Windows
859 Desktops because the software she needs to organize her business only
860 works with Windows . :-(

861
862
In 1988 we started with one PC and DOS, then I learned to use
863 Windows 98, 2000, XP, …, 8, Ubuntu, MacOSX. Today we are running a
864 Linux server with 6 Windows clients and 10 persons (teacher of
865 children with special needs, speech therapist, occupational therapist,
866 psychologist and officeworkers) using our Samba shares via OpenVPN to
867 work with the documentations of our patients.

868
869
How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
870 project?

871
872
Two years ago a friend of mine asked me, if I want to get a job in
873 his school (Gymnasium
874 Harsewinkel). They started with Skolelinux / Debian Edu and they
875 were looking for people to give support to the teachers using the
876 software and the network and teaching the pupils increasing their
877 computer skills in optional lessons. I'm spending 4-6 hours a week
878 with this job.

879
880
What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
881 Edu?

882
883
The independence.

884
885
First: Every person is allowed to use, share and develop the
886 software. Even if you are poor, you are allowed to use the software
887 included in Skolelinux/Debian Edu and all the other Free Software.

888
889
Second: The software runs on old machines and this gives us the
890 possibility to recycle computers, weeded out from offices. The
891 servers and desktops are running for more than two years and they are
892 working reliable.

893
894
We have two servers (one tjener and one terminal server), 45
895 workstations in three classrooms and seven laptops as a mobile
896 solution for all classrooms. These machines are all booting from the
897 terminal server. In the moment we are installing 30 laptops as mobile
898 workstations. Then the pupils have the possibility to work with these
899 machines in their classrooms. Internet access is realized by a WLAN
900 router, connected to the schools network. This is all done without a
901 dedicated system administrator or a computer science teacher.

902
903
What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
904 Edu?

905
906
Teachers and pupils are Windows users. <Irony on> And Linux
907 isn't cool. It's software for freaks using the command line. <Irony
908 off> They don't realize the stability of the system.

909
910
Which free software do you use daily?

911
912
Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Ubuntu Server 12.04 (Samba,
913 Apache, MySQL, Joomla!, … and Skolelinux / Debian Edu)

914
915
Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
916 get schools to use free software?

917
918
In Germany we have the situation: every school is free to decide
919 which software they want to use. This decision is influenced by
920 teachers who learned to use Windows and MS Office. They buy a PC with
921 Windows preinstalled and an additional testing version of MS
922 Office. They don't know about the possibility to use Free Software
923 instead. Another problem are the publisher of school books. They
924 develop their software, added to the school books, for Windows.

933

This summer I finally had time to continue working on the Norwegian
934 docbook version of the 2004 book
935 Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig,
936 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with todays copyright
937 law. Yesterday, I finally completed translated the book text. There
938 are still some foot/end notes left to translate, the colophon page
939 need to be rewritten, and a few words and phrases still need to be
940 translated, but the Norwegian text is ready for the first proof
941 reading. :) More spell checking is needed, and several illustrations
942 need to be cleaned up. The work stopped up because I had to give
943 priority to other projects the last year, and the progress graph of
944 the translation show this very well:

967

The Debian Edu / Skolelinux
968 project provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
969 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
970 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation. This text is about how the
971 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.

972
973
One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
974 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
975 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
976 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
977 in sync. And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
978 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
979 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
980 edit the documentation using a web browser. We also want it to be
981 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
982 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
983 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
984 goals.

985
986
We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
987 Debian
988 wiki, as several wiki pages written in English. It consist of one
989 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
990 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
991 chapters together into one large web page (aka
992 the
993 AllInOne page). The AllInOne page is the one used for further
994 processing and translations. Thanks to the fact that the
995 MoinMoin installation on
996 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
997 the Docbook format, we can fetch
998 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
999 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
1000 manual. This process also download images and transform image
1001 references to use the locally downloaded images. The generated
1002 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
1003 using the documentation/scripts/get_manual program, and the
1004 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
1005 a handfull of images. The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
1006 and epub versions of the English manual. This is the basic step of
1007 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
1008 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
1009 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.

1010
1011
But English documentation is not enough for us. We want translated
1012 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
1013 track the English original. For this we use the
1014 poxml package,
1015 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
1016 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
1017 translation tools used by those translating free software. The pot
1018 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
1019 files), which the translations update with the native language
1020 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
1021 original. The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
1022 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
1023 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
1024 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml). This translated (or partly
1025 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
1026 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
1027 of the documentation.

1028
1029
The translators use different tools to edit the .po files. We
1030 recommend using
1031 lokalize,
1032 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
1033 Poodle or
1034 Transifex. All we care about
1035 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository. Updated
1036 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
1037 bug reports
1038 against the debian-edu-doc package.

1039
1040
One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
1041 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
1042 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
1043 this regard). For this we transform the original PNG images to the
1044 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
1045 translated images by storing translated versions in
1046 images/$LANGUAGECODE/. I am a bit unsure about the details here. The
1047 package maintainers know more.

1048
1049
If you wonder what the result look like, we provide
1050 the content
1051 of the documentation packages on the web. See for example the
1052 Italian
1053 PDF version or the
1054 German
1055 HTML version. We do not yet build the epub version by default,
1056 but perhaps it will be done in the future.

1057
1058
To learn more, check out
1059 the

1062 manual on the wiki and

1073

1080 youtube-dl. Støtten i
1081 youtube-dl kom
1082 inn for 23 dager siden og
1083 versjonen i

1107
1108
Oppdatering 2014-06-17: Etter at jeg publiserte
1109 denne, ble jeg tipset om bloggposten
1110 "Downloading
1115 støtte for å laste ned undertitler. Takk til Anders Einar Hilden for
1116 god innsats og youtube-dl-utviklerne for rask respons.
