  31         <p>Almost thirty years ago, some forward looking teachers at Samisk
  32 videregående skole og reindriftsskole teaching metal work and Northern
  33 Sámi, decided to create a list of words used in Northern Sámi metal
  34 work.  After almost ten years this resulted in a dictionary database,
  35 published as the book
  36 "<a href="https://ovttas.no/nb/girji_mekanikerord">Mekanihkkársánit :
  37 Mekanikerord = Mekaanisen alan sanasto = Mechanic's words</a>" in
  38 1999.  The
  39 <a href="http://www.skuvla.info/skolehist/sveinl-n.htm">story of this
  40 work</a> is available from the pen of Svein Lund, one of the leading
  41 actors behind this effort.  They even got the dictionary approved by
  42 the Sámi Language Council as the recommended metal work words to use.</p>

  44 <p>Fast forward twenty years, I came across this work when I recently
  45 became interested in metal work, and started watching educational and
  46 funny videos on the topic, like the ones from
  47 <a href="https://yewtu.be/channel/UCKLIIdKEpjAnn8E76KP7sQg">mrpete222</a>
  48 and <a href="https://yewtu.be/channel/UC5NO8MgTQKHAWXp6z8Xl7yQ">This
  49 Old Tony</a>.  But they all talk English, but I wanted to know what
  50 the tools and techniques they used were called in Norwegian.  Trying
  51 to track down a good dictionary from English to Norwegian, after much
  52 searching, I came across the database of words created
  53 almost thirty years ago, with translations into English, Norwegian,
  54 Northern Sámi, Swedish and Finnish.  This gave me a lot of the
  55 Norwegian phrases I had been looking for.  To make it easier for the
  56 next person trying to track down a good Norwegian dictionary for the
  57 metal worker, and because I knew the person behind the database from
  58 my Skolelinux / Debian Edu days, I decided to ask if the database
  59 could be released to the public without any usage limitations, in
  60 other words as a Creative Commons licensed data set.  And happily,
  61 after consulting with the Sámi Parliament of Norway, the database is
  62 now available with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International
  63 license from

 116 Northern Sámi, but not English.  Because of this, the Northern Sámi
 117 edition include both descriptions, the Norwegian edition include the
 118 Norwegian description and the English edition lack a descripiton.</p>

 120 <p>Once the database was available without any usage restrictions, and
 121 armed with my experience in publishing books, I decided to publish a
 122 Norwegian/English dictionary as a book using the database, to make the
 123 data set available also on paper and as an ebook.  Further into the
 124 project, it occurred to me that I could just as easily make an English
 125 dictionary, and talking to Svein and concluding that it was within
 126 reach, I decided to make a Northern Sámi dictionary too.</p>

 128 <p>Thus I suddenly find myself publishing a Northern Sámi dictionary,
 129 even though I do not understand the language myself.  I hope it will
 130 be well received, and can help revive the impressive work done almost
 131 thirty years ago to document the vocabulary of metal workers.  If I
 132 get some help, I might even extend it with some of the words I find
 133 missing, like collet, rotary broach, carbide, knurler, arbor press and
 134 others.  But the first edition build from a lightly edited version of

 146 include support for Northern Sámi.  Before I started, these lacked the
 147 needed locale settings for this language, but now the patches are
 148 included upstream.</p>

 170 utgaven av «Hvordan knuse overvåkningskapitalismen» av Cory Doctorow

 190 analyserer dr. Doctorow de utfordringer vi møter i større og større
 191 omfang. Ikke bare i USA, men også her hjemme.</p>

 193 <p>Cory Doctorow er en britisk-kanadisk forfatter, journalist og
 194 aktivist, kjent for sine science fiction-romaner, for arbeidet for
 195 Creative Commons-bevegelsen, og for sine bidrag til reform av
 196 opphavsretten. Han er både æresdoktor og gjesteforeleser i
 197 datavitenskap ved Open University i UK, konsulent for Electronic
 198 Frontier Foundation, og godt kjent for innsiktsfullt å kommentere og
 199 skrive om digital utvikling.</p>

 202 en dugnadsgjeng ledet av Petter Reinholdtsen.</p>

 205 Hva fører det til når store deler av Internettet domineres av få store
 206 aktører og deres styringsverktøy og algoritmer?</p>

 209 - grenser for overvåkning av individet, for utøvelse av kommersiell
 210 og politisk påvirkning, og for monopoldannelser i
 211 dataverdenen. Slik grensesetting styrker personvernet.</p>

 213 <p>Konkurransetilsynet har ansvaret for at konkurranselovens § 11 skal
 214 forby «et dominerende foretak for utilbørlig å utnytte og misbruke
 215 sin dominerende stilling». Et tilsvarende forbud omfattes også av
 216 EØS-avtalens artikkel 54. Boken går i detalj om serien av
 217 innskrenkninger vi møter i valgfriheten, innskrenkninger som denne
 218 lovgivningen nettopp skal forhindre. Håndhevelse av en slik lovgivning
 219 er også til fordel for mindre næringsdrivende som uten dette får
 220 begrenset sine faktiske eller potensielle muligheter for vekst og
 221 etablering. «Slik atferd kan utgjøre et misbruk og kan ta ulike
 222 former», skriver Konkurransetilsynet.</p>

 225 på forhold det burde vært grepet inn mot.</p>

 390 <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free Culture by Lawrence
 391 Lessig</a>, is still selling a few copies.  Not a lot, but enough to
 392 have contributed slightly over $500 to the <a
 393 href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons Corporation</a>
 394 so far.  All the profit is sent there. Most books are still sold via
 395 Amazon (83 copies), with Ingram second (49) and Lulu (12) and Machette (7) as
 396 minor channels.  Bying directly from Lulu bring the largest cut to
 397 Creative Commons.  The English Edition sold 80 copies so far, the
 398 French 59 copies, and Norwegian only 8 copies.  Nothing impressive,
 399 but nice to see the work we put down is still being appreciated.  The
 400 ebook edition is available for free from

 494 translators, the first draft of a Norwegian Bokmål edition of the book

 496 was complete.  The Spanish translation is also complete, while the
 497 Dutch, Polish, German and Ukraine edition need a lot of work.  Get in

 501 <p>The whole book project started when
 502 <a href="http://gwolf.org/node/4102">Gunnar Wolf announced</a> that he
 503 was going to make a Spanish edition of the book.  I noticed, and
 504 offered some input on how to make a book, based on my experience with
 505 translating the
 506 <a href="https://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/fri-kultur/paperback/product-22441576.html">Free
 507 Culture</a> and
 508 <a href="https://debian-handbook.info/get/#norwegian">The Debian
 509 Administrator's Handbook</a> books to Norwegian Bokmål.  To make a
 510 long story short, we ended up working on a Bokmål edition, and now the
 511 first rough translation is complete, thanks to the hard work of
 512 Ole-Erik Yrvin, Ingrid Yrvin, Allan Nordhøy and myself.  The first
 513 proof reading is almost done, and only the second and third proof
 514 reading remains.  We will also need to translate the 14 figures and
 515 create a book cover.  Once it is done we will publish the book on
 516 paper, as well as in PDF, ePub and possibly Mobi formats.</p>

 518 <p>The book itself originates as a manuscript on Google Docs, is
 519 downloaded as ODT from there and converted to Markdown using pandoc.
 520 The Markdown is modified by a script before is converted to DocBook
 521 using pandoc.  The DocBook is modified again using a script before it
 522 is used to create a Gettext POT file for translators.  The translated
 523 PO file is then combined with the earlier mentioned DocBook file to
 524 create a translated DocBook file, which finally is given to dblatex to
 525 create the final PDF.  The end result is a set of editions of the
 526 manuscript, one English and one for each of the translations.</p>

 559 Culture book</a> by the founder of the Creative Commons movement,
 560 Lawrence Lessig, is still being appreciated.  I had a look at the
 561 latest sales numbers for the paper edition today.  Not too impressive,
 562 but happy to see some buyers still exist.  All the revenue from the
 563 books is sent to the <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative
 564 Commons Corporation</a>, and they receive the largest cut if you buy
 565 directly from Lulu.  Most books are sold via Amazon, with Ingram
 566 second and only a small fraction directly from Lulu.  The ebook
 567 edition is available for free from

 630         <p>As my regular readers probably remember, the last year I published
 631 a French and Norwegian translation of the classic
 632 <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free Culture book</a> by the
 633 founder of the Creative Commons movement, Lawrence Lessig.  A bit less
 634 known is the fact that due to the way I created the translations,
 635 using docbook and po4a, I also recreated the English original.  And
 636 because I already had created a new the PDF edition, I published it
 637 too.  The revenue from the books are sent to the Creative Commons
 638 Corporation.  In other words, I do not earn any money from this
 639 project, I just earn the warm fuzzy feeling that the text is available
 640 for a wider audience and more people can learn why the Creative
 641 Commons is needed.</p>

 643 <p>Today, just for fun, I had a look at the sales number over at
 644 Lulu.com, which take care of payment, printing and shipping.  Much to
 645 my surprise, the English edition is selling better than both the
 646 French and Norwegian edition, despite the fact that it has been
 647 available in English since it was first published.  In total, 24 paper
 648 books was sold for USD $19.99 between 2016-01-01 and 2016-07-31:</p>

 659 book, is sent to the Creative Commons project when the book is sold

 661 summary from Lulu tell me 10 books was sold via the Amazon channel, 10
 662 via Ingram (what is this?) and 4 directly by Lulu.  And Lulu.com tells
 663 me that the revenue sent so far this year is USD $101.42.  No idea
 664 what kind of sales numbers to expect, so I do not know if that is a
 665 good amount of sales for a 10 year old book or not.  But it make me
 666 happy that the buyers find the book, and I hope they enjoy reading it
 667 as much as I did.</p>

 747 <a href="http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/">dblatex</a> developer Benoît
 748 Guillon, who created the PO file from the initial translation

 750 <a href="http://www.wikilivres.ca/wiki/Culture_libre">the Wikilivres
 751 wiki pages</a> and completed and corrected the translation to match
 752 the original docbook edition my project is using, as well as
 753 coordinated the proof reading of the final result.  I believe the end
 754 result look great, but I am biased and do not read French.  In
 755 addition to the paperback edition, the book is available in PDF, EPUB
 756 and Mobi format from the github project page linked to above.</p>

 758 <p>When enabling book store distribution on Lulu.com, I had to nearly
 759 triple the price to allow the book stores some profit.  I also had to
 760 accept that I will get some revenue when a book is sold via Lulu.com.
 761 But because of the non-commercial clause in the book license
 762 (CC-BY-NC), this might be a problem.  To bypass the problem I
 763 discussed how to handle the revenue with the author, and we agreed
 764 that the revenue for these editions go to the
 765 <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons non-profit
 766 Corporation</a> who handle donations to the Creative Commons project.
 767 So far they have earned around USD 70 on sales of the
 768 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/free-culture/paperback/product-22440520.html">English</a>

 770 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/fri-kultur/paperback/product-22441576.html">Norwegian

 876 movement</a> gained momentum, its creator Lawrence Lessig wrote the
 877 book <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Culture_(book)">Free
 878 Culture</a> to explain the problems with increasing copyright
 879 regulation and suggest some solutions.  I read the book back then and
 880 was very moved by it.  Reading the book inspired me and changed the
 881 way I looked on copyright law, and I would love it if more people
 882 would read it too.</p>

 884 <p>Because of this, I decided in the summer of 2012 to translate it to
 885 Norwegian Bokmål and publish it for those of my friends and family
 886 that prefer to read books in Norwegian.  I translated the book using
 887 docbook and a gettext PO file, and a byproduct of this process is a
 888 new edition of the English original.  I've been in touch with the
 889 author during by work, and he said it was fine with him if I also
 890 published an English version.  So I decided to do so.  Today, I made
 891 this edition

 983         <p>Creating a good looking book cover proved harder than I expected.
 984 I wanted to create a cover looking similar to the original cover of
 985 the
 986 <a href="https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/free-culture-lessig">Free
 987 Culture</a> book we are translating to Norwegian, and I wanted it in
 988 vector format for high resolution printing.  But my inkscape knowledge
 989 were not nearly good enough to pull that off.

 991 <p>But thanks to the great inkscape community, I was able to wrap up
 992 the cover yesterday evening.  I asked on the
 993 <a href="irc://irc.freenode.net/%23inkscape">#inkscape IRC channel</a>
 994 on Freenode for help and clues, and Marc Jeanmougin (Mc-) volunteered
 995 to try to recreate it based on the PDF of the cover from the HTML
 996 version.  Not only did he create a
 997 <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/copy1.svg ">SVG document with
 998 the original and his vector version side by side</a>, he even provided
 999 an <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/out-1.ogv">instruction
1000 video</a> explaining how he did it</a>.  But the instruction video is
1001 not easy to follow for an untrained inkscape user. The video is a
1002 recording on how he did it, and he is obviously very experienced as
1003 the menu selections are very quick and he mentioned on IRC that he did
1004 use some keyboard shortcuts that can't be seen on the video, but it
1005 give a good idea about the inkscape operations to use to create the
1006 stripes with the embossed copyright sign in the center.</p>

1008 <p>I took his SVG file, copied the vector image and re-sized it to fit
1009 on the cover I was drawing.  I am happy with the end result, and the

1046         <p>Today, finally, my first printed draft edition of the Norwegian
1047 translation of Free Culture I have been working on for the last few
1048 years arrived in the mail.  I had to fake a cover to get the interior
1049 printed, and the exterior of the book look awful, but that is
1050 irrelevant at this point.  I asked for a printed pocket book version
1051 to get an idea about the font sizes and paper format as well as how
1052 good the figures and images look in print, but also to test what the
1053 pocket book version would look like.  After receiving the 500 page
1054 pocket book, it became obvious to me that that pocket book size is too
1055 small for this book.  I believe the book is too thick, and several
1056 tables and figures do not look good in the size they get with that
1057 small page sizes.  I believe I will go with the 5.5x8.5 inch size
1058 instead.  A surprise discovery from the paper version was how bad the
1059 URLs look in print.  They are very hard to read in the colophon page.
1060 The URLs are red in the PDF, but light gray on paper.  I need to
1061 change the color of links somehow to look better.  But there is a
1062 printed book in my hand, and it feels great. :)</p>

1064 <p>Now I only need to fix the cover, wrap up the postscript with the
1065 store behind the book, and collect the last corrections from the proof
1066 readers before the book is ready for proper printing.  Cover artists
1067 willing to work for free and create a Creative Commons licensed vector

1069 a graphics designer are mostly missing.</p>

1091 mostly done, and a volunteer proof reader was going to check the text
1092 on paper, it was time this summer to focus on formatting my translated

1095 Lessig.  I've been trying to get both docboox-xsl+fop and dblatex to

1098 helpful in solving my formatting challenges.</p>

1102 and I ordered a text version of the book on paper.  It is lacking a

1104 should give me an idea what the finished book will look like.</p>

1318         <p>The <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu / Skolelinux
1319 project</a> provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
1320 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
1321 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation.  This text is about how the
1322 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.</p>
1323
1324 <p>One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
1325 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
1326 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
1327 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
1328 in sync.  And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
1329 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
1330 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
1331 edit the documentation using a web browser.  We also want it to be
1332 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
1333 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
1334 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
1335 goals.</p>

1337 <p>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
1338 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/">Debian
1339 wiki</a>, as several wiki pages written in English.  It consist of one
1340 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
1341 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
1342 chapters together into one large web page (aka
1343 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne">the
1344 AllInOne page</a>).  The AllInOne page is the one used for further
1345 processing and translations.  Thanks to the fact that the
1346 <a href="http://moinmo.in/">MoinMoin</a> installation on
1347 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
1348 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">the Docbook format</a>, we can fetch
1349 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
1350 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
1351 manual.  This process also download images and transform image
1352 references to use the locally downloaded images.  The generated
1353 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
1354 using the <tt>documentation/scripts/get_manual</tt> program, and the
1355 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
1356 a handfull of images.  The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
1357 and epub versions of the English manual.  This is the basic step of
1358 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
1359 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
1360 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.</p>

1362 <p>But English documentation is not enough for us.  We want translated
1363 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
1364 track the English original.  For this we use the
1365 <a href="http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html">poxml</a> package,
1366 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
1367 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
1368 translation tools used by those translating free software.  The pot
1369 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
1370 files), which the translations update with the native language
1371 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
1372 original.  The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
1373 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
1374 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
1375 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml).  This translated (or partly
1376 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
1377 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
1378 of the documentation.</p>

1380 <p>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files.  We
1381 recommend using
1382 <a href="http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/">lokalize</a>,
1383 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
1384 <a href="http://pootle.translatehouse.org/">Poodle</a> or
1385 <a href="https://www.transifex.com/">Transifex</a>.  All we care about
1386 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository.  Updated
1387 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
1388 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc">bug reports
1389 against the debian-edu-doc package</a>.</p>

1391 <p>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
1392 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
1393 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
1394 this regard).  For this we transform the original PNG images to the
1395 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
1396 translated images by storing translated versions in
1397 images/$LANGUAGECODE/.  I am a bit unsure about the details here.  The
1398 package maintainers know more.</p>

1441 law.  Yesterday, I finally broken the 90% mark, when counting the
1442 number of strings to translate.  Due to real life constraints, I have
1443 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
1444 I found time to work on it again.  Still lots of work left, but the
1445 first draft is nearing completion.  I created a graph to show the
1446 progress of the translation:</p>

1450 <p>When the first draft is done, the translated text need to be
1451 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG
1452 drawings need to be fixed.  There are probably also some index entries
1453 missing that need to be added.  This can be done by comparing the
1454 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
1455 English docbook version with the paper version.  Last, the colophon
1456 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
1457 done.  I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
1458 of the index pages.  All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
1459 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
1460 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.</p>

1462 <p>There is still need for translators and people with docbook
1463 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
1464 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
1465 translation and proof reading.  And I would like the figures to be
1466 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them.  Any SVG master
1467 around?  There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.

1539 lisens, og novellen utgis av EFN med en Creative Commons (CC)

1542 beskjed om hvilke rettigheter de har til å dele novellen videre med

1613         <p>A few days ago, during a discussion in
1614 <a href="http://www.efn.no/">EFN</a> about interesting books to read
1615 about copyright and the data retention directive, a suggestion to read
1616 the 1968 short story Kodémus by
1617 <a href="http://web2.gyldendal.no/toraage/">Tore Åge Bringsværd</a>
1618 came up.  The text was only available in old paper books, and thus not
1619 easily available for current and future generations.  Some of the
1620 people participating in the discussion contacted the author, and
1621 reported back 2013-03-19 that the author was OK with releasing the
1622 short story using a <a href="http://www.creativecommons.org/">Creative
1623 Commons</a> license.  The text was quickly scanned and OCR-ed, and we
1624 were ready to start on the editing and typesetting.</p>

1626 <p>As I already had some experience formatting text in my project to
1627 provide a Norwegian version of the Free Culture book by Lawrence
1628 Lessig, I chipped in and set up a
1629 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">DocBook</a> processing framework to
1630 generate PDF, HTML and EPUB version of the short story.  The tools to
1631 transform DocBook to different formats are already in my Linux
1632 distribution of choice, <a href="http://www.debian.org/">Debian</a>, so
1633 all I had to do was to use the
1634 <a href="http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/">dblatex</a>,
1635 <a href="http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/epub/README">dbtoepub</a>
1636 and <a href="https://fedorahosted.org/xmlto/">xmlto</a> tools to do the
1637 conversion.  After a few days, we decided to replace dblatex with
1638 xsltproc/fop (aka
1639 <a href="http://wiki.docbook.org/DocBookXslStylesheets">docbook-xsl</a>),
1640 to get the copyright information to show up in the PDF and to get a
1641 nicer &lt;variablelist&gt; typesetting, but that is just a minor
1642 technical detail.</p>

1644 <p>There were a few challenges, of course.  We want to typeset the
1645 short story to look like the original, and that require fairly good
1646 control over the layout.  The original short story have three
1647 parts/scenes separated by a single horizontally centred star (*), and
1648 the paragraphs do not contain only flowing text, but dialogs and text
1649 that started on a new line in the middle of the paragraph.</p>

1651 <p>I initially solved the first challenge by using a paragraph with a
1652 single star in it, ie &lt;para&gt;*&lt;/para&gt;, but it made sure a
1653 placeholder indicated where the scene shifted.  This did not look too
1654 good without the centring.  The next approach was to create a new
1655 preprocessor directive &lt;?newscene?&gt;, mapping to "&lt;hr/&gt;"
1656 for HTML and "&lt;fo:block text-align="center"&gt;&lt;fo:leader
1657 leader-pattern="rule" rule-thickness="0.5pt"/&gt;&lt;/fo:block&gt;"
1658 for FO/PDF output (did not try to implement this in dblatex, as we had

1752 The reason is that this book is a great primer on what problems exist
1753 in the current copyright laws, and I want it to be available also for
1754 those that are reluctant do read an English book.

1809 to debate the latest revisions to the Norwegian copyright law.  This

1870 the language used at the top, and the processing pipeline will use
1871 this information to pick the correct translations for 'chapter', 'see
1872 also', 'index' etc.  And for most languages used with docbook, I guess
1873 this work just fine.  For example a German user can start the document
1874 with &lt;book lang="de"&gt;, and the document will show up with the
1875 correct content with any of the docbook processors.  This is not the
1876 case for the language

1880 <p>For a while, I was confused about which language code to use,
1881 because I was unable to find any language code that would work across
1882 all tools.  I am currently testing dblatex, xmlto, docbook-xsl, and
1883 dbtoepub, and they do not handle Norwegian Bokmål the same way.  Some
1884 of them do not handle it at all.</p>

1886 <p>A bit of background information is probably needed to understand
1887 this mess.  Norwegian is not one, but two written variants.  The
1888 variants are Norwegian Nynorsk and Norwegian Bokmål.  There are three
1889 two letter language codes associated with these languages, Norwegian
1890 is 'no', Norwegian Nynorsk is 'nn' and Norwegian Bokmål is 'nb'.
1891 Historically the 'no' language code was used for Norwegian Bokmål, but

2095 det skummelt å se hvor lite stortingsrepresentantene forsto hvordan
2096 Internet påvirket folks forhold til kulturuttrykk, og min venn Vidar
2097 og jeg spekulert på at det hadde kanskje vært fornuftig om samtlige
2098 representanter fikk en norsk utgave av boken

2100 som forklarte litt om problemstillingene.  Vi endte opp med å
2101 prioritere utvikling i
2102 <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Skolelinux</a>-prosjektet i
2103 stedet, så den oversatte boken så aldri dagens lys.  Men i forrige uke
2104 ble jeg inspirert til å ta opp tråden og se om det er mulig å få til
2105 bokprosjektet denne gang, da det er tydelig at kulturdepartementet i
2106 sitt nye forsøk på å gjøre opphavsrettsloven enda mer ubalansert til
2107 fordel for forlag og store mediehus fortsatt trenger en annen vinkling

2127 Github-prosjekt</a> for a lage boken, basert på Docbook-utgaven jeg
2128 fant fra Hans Schou.  Skolelinux har hatt byggesystem for å lage
2129 oversatt HTML og PDF-utgave av Docbook-bøker i en årrekke, så jeg har
2130 kopiert og utvidet dette oppsettet.  Originalteksten er i Docbook, og
2131 oversettelsen gjøres i .po-filer med hjelp av vanlige
2132 oversetterverktøy brukt i fri programvareverden.  Dernest tar
2133 byggesystemet over og lager PDF og EPUB-utgave av den oversatte
2134 teksten.  Resultatet kan ses i Github-prosjektet.  For å komme raskt
2135 igang har jeg brukt maskinoversettelse av alle tekstbitene fra engelsk
2136 til norsk, noe som grovoversatte ca. 1300 av de ca. 1700 tekstbitene
2137 boken består av.  Jeg håper nå at flere kan bidra med å få
2138 oversettelsen på plass, slik at teksten kan være klar i løpet av
2139 høsten.  Når alt er oversatt må teksten gjennomgås for feil og
2140 konsistent språk.  Totalt er det nok mange timer som trengs for å
2141 gjennomføre oversettelsen.</p>

2143 <p>Økonomien i dette er ikke avskrekkende.  169
2144 stortingsrepresentanter og nesten like mange varamedlemmer bør få
2145 bøker, og estimert produduksjonskostnad for hver bok er rundt 6 EURO i
2146 følge et raskt estimat fra Lulu.  Jeg vet ennå ikke hvor mange sider
2147 det blir i størrelsen 5,5" x 8.5" (det er ca. 140 sider i A4-format),
2148 så jeg gjettet på 400 sider.  Jeg tror originalutgaven har nesten 400
2149 sider.  For 169*2 eksemplarer snakker vi om en trykkekostnad på
2150 ca. 2000 EURO, dvs. ca 15 000 NOK.  Det burde være mulig å finne en
2151 sponsor for å dekke en slik sum.  I tillegg kommer distribusjon og
2152 porto, som antagelig kommer på like mye.</p>
