  31         <p>The first book I published,
  32 <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free Culture by Lawrence
  33 Lessig</a>, is still selling a few copies.  Not a lot, but enough to
  34 have contributed slightly over $500 to the <a
  35 href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons Corporation</a>
  36 so far.  Most books are still sold via Amazon (83), with Ingram second
  37 (49) and Lulu (12) and Machette (7) as minor channels.  Bying directly
  38 from Lulu bring the largest cut to Creative Commons.  The English
  39 Edition sold 80 copies so far, the French 59 copies, and Norwegian
  40 only 8 copies.  Nothing impressive, but nice to see the work we put
  41 down is still being appreciated.  The ebook edition is available for
  42 free from <a href="https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/free-culture-lessig">Github</a>.</p>

 129         <p>I am working on publishing yet another book related to Creative
 130 Commons.  This time it is a book filled with interviews and histories
 131 from those around the globe making a living using Creative
 132 Commons.</p>

 134 <p>Yesterday, after many months of hard work by several volunteer
 135 translators, the first draft of a Norwegian Bokmål edition of the book
 136 <a href="https://madewith.cc">Made with Creative Commons from 2017</a>
 137 was complete.  The Spanish translation is also complete, while the
 138 Dutch, Polish, German and Ukraine edition need a lot of work.  Get in
 139 touch if you want to help make those happen, or would like to
 140 translate into your mother tongue.</p>

 142 <p>The whole book project started when
 143 <a href="http://gwolf.org/node/4102">Gunnar Wolf announced</a> that he
 144 was going to make a Spanish edition of the book.  I noticed, and
 145 offered some input on how to make a book, based on my experience with
 146 translating the
 147 <a href="https://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/fri-kultur/paperback/product-22441576.html">Free
 148 Culture</a> and
 149 <a href="https://debian-handbook.info/get/#norwegian">The Debian
 150 Administrator's Handbook</a> books to Norwegian Bokmål.  To make a
 151 long story short, we ended up working on a Bokmål edition, and now the
 152 first rough translation is complete, thanks to the hard work of
 153 Ole-Erik Yrvin, Ingrid Yrvin, Allan Nordhøy and myself.  The first
 154 proof reading is almost done, and only the second and third proof
 155 reading remains.  We will also need to translate the 14 figures and
 156 create a book cover.  Once it is done we will publish the book on
 157 paper, as well as in PDF, ePub and possibly Mobi formats.</p>

 159 <p>The book itself originates as a manuscript on Google Docs, is
 160 downloaded as ODT from there and converted to Markdown using pandoc.
 161 The Markdown is modified by a script before is converted to DocBook
 162 using pandoc.  The DocBook is modified again using a script before it
 163 is used to create a Gettext POT file for translators.  The translated
 164 PO file is then combined with the earlier mentioned DocBook file to
 165 create a translated DocBook file, which finally is given to dblatex to
 166 create the final PDF.  The end result is a set of editions of the
 167 manuscript, one English and one for each of the translations.</p>

 170 <a href="https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/madewithcc/translation/">the
 171 Weblate web based translation system</a>.  Please have a look there

 271         <p>As my regular readers probably remember, the last year I published
 272 a French and Norwegian translation of the classic
 273 <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free Culture book</a> by the
 274 founder of the Creative Commons movement, Lawrence Lessig.  A bit less
 275 known is the fact that due to the way I created the translations,
 276 using docbook and po4a, I also recreated the English original.  And
 277 because I already had created a new the PDF edition, I published it
 278 too.  The revenue from the books are sent to the Creative Commons
 279 Corporation.  In other words, I do not earn any money from this
 280 project, I just earn the warm fuzzy feeling that the text is available
 281 for a wider audience and more people can learn why the Creative
 282 Commons is needed.</p>

 284 <p>Today, just for fun, I had a look at the sales number over at
 285 Lulu.com, which take care of payment, printing and shipping.  Much to
 286 my surprise, the English edition is selling better than both the
 287 French and Norwegian edition, despite the fact that it has been
 288 available in English since it was first published.  In total, 24 paper
 289 books was sold for USD $19.99 between 2016-01-01 and 2016-07-31:</p>

 305 what kind of sales numbers to expect, so I do not know if that is a
 306 good amount of sales for a 10 year old book or not.  But it make me
 307 happy that the buyers find the book, and I hope they enjoy reading it
 308 as much as I did.</p>

 382 Culture</a> book by Lawrence Lessig is now available for sale on
 383 Lulu.com.  Once I have formally verified my proof reading copy, which
 384 should be in the mail, the paperback edition should be available in
 385 book stores like Amazon and Barnes & Noble too.</p>

 387 <p>This French edition, Culture Libre, is the work of the
 388 <a href="http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/">dblatex</a> developer Benoît
 389 Guillon, who created the PO file from the initial translation
 390 available from
 391 <a href="http://www.wikilivres.ca/wiki/Culture_libre">the Wikilivres
 392 wiki pages</a> and completed and corrected the translation to match
 393 the original docbook edition my project is using, as well as
 394 coordinated the proof reading of the final result.  I believe the end
 395 result look great, but I am biased and do not read French.  In
 396 addition to the paperback edition, the book is available in PDF, EPUB
 397 and Mobi format from the github project page linked to above.</p>

 399 <p>When enabling book store distribution on Lulu.com, I had to nearly
 400 triple the price to allow the book stores some profit.  I also had to
 401 accept that I will get some revenue when a book is sold via Lulu.com.
 402 But because of the non-commercial clause in the book license
 403 (CC-BY-NC), this might be a problem.  To bypass the problem I
 404 discussed how to handle the revenue with the author, and we agreed
 405 that the revenue for these editions go to the
 406 <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons non-profit
 407 Corporation</a> who handle donations to the Creative Commons project.
 408 So far they have earned around USD 70 on sales of the
 409 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/free-culture/paperback/product-22440520.html">English</a>
 410 and
 411 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/fri-kultur/paperback/product-22441576.html">Norwegian
 412 Bokmål</a> editions, according to Lulu.com.  They will get the revenue
 413 for the French edition too.  Their revenue is higher if you buy the
 414 book directly from Lulu.com instead of via a book store, so I
 415 recommend you buy directly from Lulu.com.</p>

 517 movement</a> gained momentum, its creator Lawrence Lessig wrote the

 519 Culture</a> to explain the problems with increasing copyright
 520 regulation and suggest some solutions.  I read the book back then and
 521 was very moved by it.  Reading the book inspired me and changed the
 522 way I looked on copyright law, and I would love it if more people
 523 would read it too.</p>

 525 <p>Because of this, I decided in the summer of 2012 to translate it to
 526 Norwegian Bokmål and publish it for those of my friends and family
 527 that prefer to read books in Norwegian.  I translated the book using
 528 docbook and a gettext PO file, and a byproduct of this process is a
 529 new edition of the English original.  I've been in touch with the
 530 author during by work, and he said it was fine with him if I also
 531 published an English version.  So I decided to do so.  Today, I made
 532 this edition

 591 to try to create a French version of the book.  He started with the

 594 pages</a>, and wrote a program to convert it into a PO file, allowing
 595 the translation to be integrated into the po4a based framework I use
 596 to create the Norwegian translation from the English edition.  We meet

 624         <p>Creating a good looking book cover proved harder than I expected.
 625 I wanted to create a cover looking similar to the original cover of
 626 the
 627 <a href="https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/free-culture-lessig">Free
 628 Culture</a> book we are translating to Norwegian, and I wanted it in
 629 vector format for high resolution printing.  But my inkscape knowledge
 630 were not nearly good enough to pull that off.

 632 <p>But thanks to the great inkscape community, I was able to wrap up
 633 the cover yesterday evening.  I asked on the
 634 <a href="irc://irc.freenode.net/%23inkscape">#inkscape IRC channel</a>
 635 on Freenode for help and clues, and Marc Jeanmougin (Mc-) volunteered
 636 to try to recreate it based on the PDF of the cover from the HTML
 637 version.  Not only did he create a
 638 <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/copy1.svg ">SVG document with
 639 the original and his vector version side by side</a>, he even provided
 640 an <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/out-1.ogv">instruction
 641 video</a> explaining how he did it</a>.  But the instruction video is
 642 not easy to follow for an untrained inkscape user. The video is a
 643 recording on how he did it, and he is obviously very experienced as
 644 the menu selections are very quick and he mentioned on IRC that he did
 645 use some keyboard shortcuts that can't be seen on the video, but it
 646 give a good idea about the inkscape operations to use to create the
 647 stripes with the embossed copyright sign in the center.</p>

 649 <p>I took his SVG file, copied the vector image and re-sized it to fit
 650 on the cover I was drawing.  I am happy with the end result, and the
 651 current english version look like this:</p>

 666 proof readers a chance to complete their work.</p>

 687         <p>Today, finally, my first printed draft edition of the Norwegian
 688 translation of Free Culture I have been working on for the last few
 689 years arrived in the mail.  I had to fake a cover to get the interior
 690 printed, and the exterior of the book look awful, but that is
 691 irrelevant at this point.  I asked for a printed pocket book version
 692 to get an idea about the font sizes and paper format as well as how
 693 good the figures and images look in print, but also to test what the
 694 pocket book version would look like.  After receiving the 500 page
 695 pocket book, it became obvious to me that that pocket book size is too
 696 small for this book.  I believe the book is too thick, and several
 697 tables and figures do not look good in the size they get with that
 698 small page sizes.  I believe I will go with the 5.5x8.5 inch size
 699 instead.  A surprise discovery from the paper version was how bad the
 700 URLs look in print.  They are very hard to read in the colophon page.
 701 The URLs are red in the PDF, but light gray on paper.  I need to
 702 change the color of links somehow to look better.  But there is a
 703 printed book in my hand, and it feels great. :)</p>

 705 <p>Now I only need to fix the cover, wrap up the postscript with the
 706 store behind the book, and collect the last corrections from the proof
 707 readers before the book is ready for proper printing.  Cover artists
 708 willing to work for free and create a Creative Commons licensed vector

 710 a graphics designer are mostly missing.</p>

 732 mostly done, and a volunteer proof reader was going to check the text
 733 on paper, it was time this summer to focus on formatting my translated
 734 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> based version of the
 735 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> book by Lawrence
 736 Lessig.  I've been trying to get both docboox-xsl+fop and dblatex to
 737 give me a good looking PDF, but in the end I went with dblatex, because
 738 its Debian maintainer and upstream developer were responsive and very
 739 helpful in solving my formatting challenges.</p>

 741 <p>Last night, I finally managed to create a PDF that no longer made
 742 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/">Lulu.com</a> complain after uploading,
 743 and I ordered a text version of the book on paper.  It is lacking a
 744 proper book cover and is not tagged with the correct ISBN number, but
 745 should give me an idea what the finished book will look like.</p>

 747 <p>Instead of using Lulu, I did consider printing the book using
 748 <a href="http://www.createspace.com/">CreateSpace</a>, but ended up
 749 using Lulu because it had smaller book size options (CreateSpace seem
 750 to lack pocket book with extended distribution).  I looked for a
 751 similar service in Norway, but have not seen anything so far.  Please
 752 let me know if I am missing out on something here.</p>

 754 <p>But I still struggle to decide the book size.  Should I go for
 755 pocket book (4.25x6.875 inches / 10.8x17.5 cm) with 556 pages, Digest
 756 (5.5x8.5 inches / 14x21.6 cm) with 323 pages or US Trade (6x8 inches /
 757 15.3x22.9 cm) with 280 pages?  Fewer pager give a cheaper book, and a
 758 smaller book is easier to carry around.  The test book I ordered was
 759 pocket book sized, to give me an idea how well that fit in my hand,
 760 but I suspect I will end up using a digest sized book in the end to
 761 bring the prize down further.</p>

 763 <p>My biggest challenge at the moment is making nice cover art.  My
 764 inkscape skills are not yet up to the task of replicating the original
 765 cover in SVG format.  I also need to figure out what to write about
 766 the book on the back (will most likely use the same text as the
 767 description on web based book stores).  I would love help with this,
 768 if you are willing to license the art source and final version using
 769 the same CC license as the book.  My artistic skills are not really up
 770 to the task.</p>

 815 class file and add the LaTeX code there, but this is not always
 816 practical, when I want to be able to replace the class using a make
 817 file variable.  So my proposal misuses the latex.begindocument XSL

 921 reading. :) More spell checking is needed, and several illustrations
 922 need to be cleaned up.  The work stopped up because I had to give
 923 priority to other projects the last year, and the progress graph of

 961 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
 962 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation.  This text is about how the
 963 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.</p>

 966 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
 967 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
 968 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
 969 in sync.  And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
 970 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
 971 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
 972 edit the documentation using a web browser.  We also want it to be
 973 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
 974 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
 975 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
 976 goals.</p>

 978 <p>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
 979 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/">Debian
 980 wiki</a>, as several wiki pages written in English.  It consist of one
 981 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
 982 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
 983 chapters together into one large web page (aka
 984 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne">the
 985 AllInOne page</a>).  The AllInOne page is the one used for further
 986 processing and translations.  Thanks to the fact that the
 987 <a href="http://moinmo.in/">MoinMoin</a> installation on
 988 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
 989 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">the Docbook format</a>, we can fetch
 990 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
 991 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
 992 manual.  This process also download images and transform image
 993 references to use the locally downloaded images.  The generated
 994 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
 995 using the <tt>documentation/scripts/get_manual</tt> program, and the
 996 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
 997 a handfull of images.  The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
 998 and epub versions of the English manual.  This is the basic step of
 999 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
1000 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
1001 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.</p>

1003 <p>But English documentation is not enough for us.  We want translated
1004 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
1005 track the English original.  For this we use the
1006 <a href="http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html">poxml</a> package,
1007 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
1008 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
1009 translation tools used by those translating free software.  The pot
1010 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
1011 files), which the translations update with the native language
1012 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
1013 original.  The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
1014 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
1015 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
1016 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml).  This translated (or partly
1017 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
1018 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
1019 of the documentation.</p>

1021 <p>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files.  We
1022 recommend using
1023 <a href="http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/">lokalize</a>,
1024 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
1025 <a href="http://pootle.translatehouse.org/">Poodle</a> or
1026 <a href="https://www.transifex.com/">Transifex</a>.  All we care about
1027 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository.  Updated
1028 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
1029 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc">bug reports
1030 against the debian-edu-doc package</a>.</p>

1032 <p>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
1033 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
1034 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
1035 this regard).  For this we transform the original PNG images to the
1036 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
1037 translated images by storing translated versions in
1038 images/$LANGUAGECODE/.  I am a bit unsure about the details here.  The
1039 package maintainers know more.</p>

1077         <p>It has been a while since my last update.  Since last summer, I
1078 have worked on a Norwegian
1079 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> version of the 2004 book
1080 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> by Lawrence Lessig,
1081 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
1082 law.  Yesterday, I finally broken the 90% mark, when counting the
1083 number of strings to translate.  Due to real life constraints, I have
1084 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
1085 I found time to work on it again.  Still lots of work left, but the
1086 first draft is nearing completion.  I created a graph to show the
1087 progress of the translation:</p>

1096 English docbook version with the paper version.  Last, the colophon
1097 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
1098 done.  I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
1099 of the index pages.  All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
1100 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
1101 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.</p>

1103 <p>There is still need for translators and people with docbook
1104 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
1105 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
1106 translation and proof reading.  And I would like the figures to be
1107 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them.  Any SVG master
1108 around?  There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.

1254         <p>A few days ago, during a discussion in
1255 <a href="http://www.efn.no/">EFN</a> about interesting books to read
1256 about copyright and the data retention directive, a suggestion to read
1257 the 1968 short story Kodémus by
1258 <a href="http://web2.gyldendal.no/toraage/">Tore Åge Bringsværd</a>
1259 came up.  The text was only available in old paper books, and thus not
1260 easily available for current and future generations.  Some of the
1261 people participating in the discussion contacted the author, and
1262 reported back 2013-03-19 that the author was OK with releasing the
1263 short story using a <a href="http://www.creativecommons.org/">Creative
1264 Commons</a> license.  The text was quickly scanned and OCR-ed, and we
1265 were ready to start on the editing and typesetting.</p>

1267 <p>As I already had some experience formatting text in my project to
1268 provide a Norwegian version of the Free Culture book by Lawrence
1269 Lessig, I chipped in and set up a
1270 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">DocBook</a> processing framework to
1271 generate PDF, HTML and EPUB version of the short story.  The tools to
1272 transform DocBook to different formats are already in my Linux
1273 distribution of choice, <a href="http://www.debian.org/">Debian</a>, so
1274 all I had to do was to use the
1275 <a href="http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/">dblatex</a>,
1276 <a href="http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/epub/README">dbtoepub</a>
1277 and <a href="https://fedorahosted.org/xmlto/">xmlto</a> tools to do the
1278 conversion.  After a few days, we decided to replace dblatex with
1279 xsltproc/fop (aka
1280 <a href="http://wiki.docbook.org/DocBookXslStylesheets">docbook-xsl</a>),
1281 to get the copyright information to show up in the PDF and to get a
1282 nicer &lt;variablelist&gt; typesetting, but that is just a minor
1283 technical detail.</p>

1285 <p>There were a few challenges, of course.  We want to typeset the
1286 short story to look like the original, and that require fairly good
1287 control over the layout.  The original short story have three
1288 parts/scenes separated by a single horizontally centred star (*), and
1289 the paragraphs do not contain only flowing text, but dialogs and text
1290 that started on a new line in the middle of the paragraph.</p>

1292 <p>I initially solved the first challenge by using a paragraph with a
1293 single star in it, ie &lt;para&gt;*&lt;/para&gt;, but it made sure a
1294 placeholder indicated where the scene shifted.  This did not look too
1295 good without the centring.  The next approach was to create a new
1296 preprocessor directive &lt;?newscene?&gt;, mapping to "&lt;hr/&gt;"
1297 for HTML and "&lt;fo:block text-align="center"&gt;&lt;fo:leader
1298 leader-pattern="rule" rule-thickness="0.5pt"/&gt;&lt;/fo:block&gt;"

1441         <p>In my spare time, I currently work on a Norwegian
1442 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> version of the 2004 book
1443 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> by Lawrence Lessig,
1444 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright law
1445 I can give to my parents and others that are reluctant to read an
1446 English book.  It is a marvellous set of examples on how the ever
1447 expanding copyright regulations hurt culture and society.  When the
1448 translation is done, I hope to find funding to print and ship a copy
1449 to all the members of the Norwegian parliament, before they sit down
1450 to debate the latest revisions to the Norwegian copyright law.  This
1451 summer I
1452 <a href="http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Dugnad_for___sende_norsk_versjon_av_Free_Culture_til_stortingets_representanter_.html">called
1453 for volunteers</a> to help me, and I have been able to secure the
1454 valuable contribution from at least one other Norwegian.</p>

1456 <p>Two days ago, we finally broke the 50% mark.  Then more than 50% of
1457 the number of strings to translate (normally paragraphs, but also
1458 titles and index entries are also counted).  All parts from the
1459 beginning up to and including chapter four is translated.  So is
1460 chapters six, seven and the conclusion.  I created a graph to show the
1461 progress:</p>

1466 entries into the docbook.  They were missing with the docbook version

1470 english version of the docbook source.</p>

1473 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
1474 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
1475 translation and proof reading.  And I would like the figures to be
1476 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them.  Any SVG master
1477 around?  I am sure there are some legal terms that are unfamiliar to

1511 the language used at the top, and the processing pipeline will use
1512 this information to pick the correct translations for 'chapter', 'see
1513 also', 'index' etc.  And for most languages used with docbook, I guess
1514 this work just fine.  For example a German user can start the document
1515 with &lt;book lang="de"&gt;, and the document will show up with the
1516 correct content with any of the docbook processors.  This is not the
1517 case for the language
1518 <a href="http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Free_Culture_in_Norwegian___5_chapters_done__74_percent_left_to_do.html">I
1519 am working with at the moment</a>, Norwegian Bokmål.</p>

1521 <p>For a while, I was confused about which language code to use,
1522 because I was unable to find any language code that would work across
1523 all tools.  I am currently testing dblatex, xmlto, docbook-xsl, and
1524 dbtoepub, and they do not handle Norwegian Bokmål the same way.  Some
1525 of them do not handle it at all.</p>

1527 <p>A bit of background information is probably needed to understand
1528 this mess.  Norwegian is not one, but two written variants.  The
1529 variants are Norwegian Nynorsk and Norwegian Bokmål.  There are three
1530 two letter language codes associated with these languages, Norwegian
1531 is 'no', Norwegian Nynorsk is 'nn' and Norwegian Bokmål is 'nb'.
1532 Historically the 'no' language code was used for Norwegian Bokmål, but
1533 many years ago this was found to be å bad idea, and the recommendation
1534 is to use the most specific language code instead, to avoid confusion.
1535 In the transition period it is a good idea to make sure 'no' was an
1536 alias for 'nb'.</p>

1538 <p>Back to docbook processing tools in Debian.  The dblatex tool only
1539 understand 'nn'.  There are translations for 'no', but not 'nb' (BTS
1540 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/684391">#684391</a>), but due to a bug
1541 (BTS <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/682936">#682936</a>) the 'no'
1542 language code is not recognised.  The docbook-xsl tool chain only
1543 recognise 'nn' and 'nb', but not 'no'.  The xmlto tool only recognise
1544 'nn' and 'nb', but not 'no'.  The end result that there is no language
1545 code I can use to get the docbook file working with all of these tools
1546 at the same time. :(</p>

1738 og jeg spekulert på at det hadde kanskje vært fornuftig om samtlige

1769 fant fra Hans Schou.  Skolelinux har hatt byggesystem for å lage
1770 oversatt HTML og PDF-utgave av Docbook-bøker i en årrekke, så jeg har
1771 kopiert og utvidet dette oppsettet.  Originalteksten er i Docbook, og
1772 oversettelsen gjøres i .po-filer med hjelp av vanlige
1773 oversetterverktøy brukt i fri programvareverden.  Dernest tar
1774 byggesystemet over og lager PDF og EPUB-utgave av den oversatte
1775 teksten.  Resultatet kan ses i Github-prosjektet.  For å komme raskt
1776 igang har jeg brukt maskinoversettelse av alle tekstbitene fra engelsk
1777 til norsk, noe som grovoversatte ca. 1300 av de ca. 1700 tekstbitene
1778 boken består av.  Jeg håper nå at flere kan bidra med å få
1779 oversettelsen på plass, slik at teksten kan være klar i løpet av
1780 høsten.  Når alt er oversatt må teksten gjennomgås for feil og
1781 konsistent språk.  Totalt er det nok mange timer som trengs for å
1782 gjennomføre oversettelsen.</p>

1784 <p>Økonomien i dette er ikke avskrekkende.  169
1785 stortingsrepresentanter og nesten like mange varamedlemmer bør få
1786 bøker, og estimert produduksjonskostnad for hver bok er rundt 6 EURO i
1787 følge et raskt estimat fra Lulu.  Jeg vet ennå ikke hvor mange sider
1788 det blir i størrelsen 5,5" x 8.5" (det er ca. 140 sider i A4-format),
1789 så jeg gjettet på 400 sider.  Jeg tror originalutgaven har nesten 400
1790 sider.  For 169*2 eksemplarer snakker vi om en trykkekostnad på
1791 ca. 2000 EURO, dvs. ca 15 000 NOK.  Det burde være mulig å finne en
1792 sponsor for å dekke en slik sum.  I tillegg kommer distribusjon og
1793 porto, som antagelig kommer på like mye.</p>
