18 Gesellensetter, and he have been an important tester and contributor
19 since then, helping to make sure the

23 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Who are you, and how do you spend your days?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

25 &lt;p&gt;I am a teacher from Germany, and my subjects are Geography,
26 Mathematics, and Computer Science (&quot;Informatik&quot;). During the past 12
27 years (since 2000), I have been working for a comprehensive (and soon,
28 also inclusive) school leading to all kind of general levels, such as
29 O- or A-level (&quot;Abitur&quot;). For quite as long, I&#39;ve been taking care of
30 our computer network.&lt;/p&gt;

32 &lt;p&gt;Now, in my early 40s, I enjoy the privilege of spending a lot of my
33 spare time together with my wife, our son (3 years) and our daughter
34 (4 months).&lt;/p&gt;

36 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux/Debian Edu
37 project?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

39 &lt;p&gt;We had tried different Linux based school servers, when members of
40 my local Linux User Group (LUG OWL) detected Skolelinux. I remember
41 very well, being part of a party celebrating the Linux New Media Award
42 (&quot;Best Newcomer Distribution&quot;, also nominated: Ubuntu) that was given
43 to Skolelinux at Linux World Exposition in Frankfurt, 2005 (IIRC). Few
44 months later, I had the chance to join a developer meeting in Ulsrud
45 (Oslo) and to hand out the award to Knut Yrvin and others. For more
46 than 7 years, Skolelinux is part of our schools infrastructure, namely
47 our main server (tjener), one LTSP (today without thin clients), and
48 approximately 50 work stations. Most of these have the option to boot a
49 locally installed Skolelinux image. As a consequence, I joined quite
50 a few events dealing with free software or Linux, and met many Debian
51 (Edu) developers. All of them seemed quite nice and competent to me,
52 one more reason to stick to Skolelinux.&lt;/p&gt;

54 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux/Debian
55 Edu?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

57 &lt;p&gt;Debian driven, you are given all the advantages of a community
58 project including well maintained updates. Once, you are familiar with
59 the network layout, you can easily roll out an entire educational
60 computer infrastructure, from just one installation media. As only
61 free software (FOSS) is used, that supports even elderly hardware,
62 up-sizing your IT equipment is only limited by space (i.e. available
63 labs). Especially if you run a LTSP thin client server, your
64 administration costs tend towards zero.&lt;/p&gt;

66 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux/Debian
67 Edu?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

69 &lt;p&gt;While Debian&#39;s stability has loads of advantages for servers, this
70 might be different in some cases for clients: Schools with unlimited
71 budget might buy new hardware with components that are not yet
72 supported by Debian stable, or wish to use more recent versions of
73 office packages or desktop environments. These schools have the
74 option to run Debian testing or other distributions - if they have the
75 capacity to do so. Another issue is that Debian release cycles
76 include a wide range of changes; therefor a high percentage of human
77 power seems to be absorbed by just keeping the features of Skolelinux
78 within the new setting of the version to come. During this process,
79 the cogs of Debian Edu are getting more and more professional,
80 i.e. harder to understand for novices.&lt;/p&gt;

82 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Which free software do you use daily?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

84 &lt;p&gt;LibreOffice, Wikipedia, Openstreetmap, Iceweasel (Mozilla Firefox),
85 KMail, Gimp, Inkscape - and of course the Linux Kernel (not only on
86 PC, Laptop, Mobile, but also our SAT receiver)&lt;/p&gt;

88 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
89 get schools to use free software?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

93 &lt;li&gt;Support computer science as regular subject in schools to make
94 people really &quot;own&quot; their hardware, to make them understand the
95 difference between proprietary software products, and free software
96 developing.&lt;/li&gt;

98 &lt;li&gt;Make budget baskets corresponding: In Germany&#39;s public schools
99 there are more or less fixed budgets for IT equipment (including
100 licenses), so schools won&#39;t benefit from any savings here. This
101 privilege is left to private schools which have consequently a large
102 share among German Skolelinux schools.&lt;/li&gt;

104 &lt;li&gt;Get free software in the seminars where would-be teachers are
105 trained. In many cases, teachers&#39; software customs are respected by
106 decision makers rather than the expertise of any IT experts.&lt;/li&gt;

108 &lt;li&gt;Don&#39;t stick to free software as to be run natively. Everybody uses
109 free software or free licenses (for instance Wikipedia), and this
110 general concept should get expanded to free educational content to be
111 shared world wide (school books e.g.).&lt;/li&gt;

113 &lt;li&gt;Make clear where ever you can that the market share of free (libre)
114 office suites is much above 20 p.c. today, and that you pupils don&#39;t
115 need to know the &quot;ribbon menu&quot; in order to get employed.&lt;/li&gt;

120 for USB pen drives. Endorse students to get a legal copy of

154 will be so costly, is based on the assumption that this mean every
155 existing document need to be converted from one of the MS Office
156 formats to ODF, transferred to the receiver, and converted back from
157 ODF to one of the MS Office formats, and that the conversion will cost
158 10 minutes of work time for both the sender and the receiver. In
159 reality the sender would have a tool capable of saving to ODF, and the
160 receiver would have a tool capable of reading it, and the time spent
161 would at most be a few seconds for saving and loading, not 20 minutes

219 fungere sammen med den opprinnelige programvaren, og ettersom man ikke
220 har de samme muligheter for overblikk over grensesnittet som en seende
221 bruker. I tillegg til dette kommer de mer tilgjengelighetstekniske
222 utfordringene som ofte må løses i samarbeid med
223 programvareleverandør/produsent.&lt;/p&gt;

225 &lt;p&gt;Fri programvare er ikke på samme måte underlagt lovgivning gjennom
226 for eksempel diskriminerings og tilgjengelighetsloven ettersom det

281 falt i smak for min del, var fordi denne fungere og ligner mest på
282 Windows-programmet (cubase) jeg jobbet mye med da jeg i mine yngre
283 dager var «Windows fanatiker». Ble introdusert til Linux av en kompis
284 av meg for omtrent 14 år siden, og har bare blitt mer og mer glad i
285 dette operativsystemet.&lt;/p&gt;

287 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hvordan kom du i kontakt med Skolelinux-prosjektet?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

289 &lt;p&gt;Da jeg ble sykemeldt fra min gamle jobb, og måtte omskoleres,
290 havnet jeg i 2007 sammen med Viggo Fedreheim på IKT-avdelingen i
291 Narvik kommune, der ble jeg for første gang introdusert til
292 Skolelinuxprosjektet.&lt;/p&gt;

294 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hva er fordelene med Skolelinux slik du ser det?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

296 &lt;p&gt;Skolelinux er enkelt å holde i drift og masse flotte programmer som
297 geogebra, ktouch og kgeografi følger med pakken. Man kan ta i bruk
298 gamle PC-er igjen, slik at skoler med dårlig råd får opp en brukbar
299 PC-park. PC-er som er ca 6-9 år gamle fungere tilfredstillende, bare
300 de har 512 MB RAM eller mer.&lt;/p&gt;

302 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hva er ulempene med Skolelinux slik du ser det?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

304 &lt;p&gt;Ulempene er at noen av de pedagogiske programmene som lærene ønsker
305 å bruke fungere dårlig med Linux. Mye pga. av at disse programmene
306 blir ikke laget til Linuxbaserte operativsystemer.&lt;/p&gt;

308 &lt;p&gt;Video- og bilde-redigering har dessverre en del mangler, mange av
309 programmene har en tendens til og krasje. Det gjelder blant annet
310 &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.kdenlive.org/&quot;&gt;kdenlive&lt;/a&gt; og
311 &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.openshotvideo.com/&quot;&gt;openshot&lt;/a&gt;, for å nevne
312 noen. De er ikke stabile nok. Når elevene kommer med filmsnutter de
313 ønsker og jobbe med, så godtar ikke programmene filene, og når elevene
314 jobber med redigering bare krasjer programmene uten forvarsel. Det er
315 for vanskelig å få noe som bare fungerer ut av boksen her. Når en elev
316 plugger inn et videokamera eller fotoapparat så er det alltid noe som
317 ikke vil fungere. Programmene godtar ikke format, godtar ikke
318 kameraet, osv., osv. Det er dessverre med på og dra ned en positiv
319 opplevelse av bruk av fri programvare.&lt;/p&gt;

321 &lt;p&gt;Man må ofte bruke flere en et video redigerings program før og få
322 fullført en ønsket oppgave.&lt;/p&gt;

324 &lt;p&gt;Eksempel:&lt;/p&gt;

326 &lt;p&gt;Hvis det ene programmet ikke vil ta i mot videofilen klarer et
327 annet det, men det programmet som klarer det kan ikke gjøre de samme
328 oppgavene som det programmet som ikke ville ta i mot filen,
329 Tilsvarende er det med foto, man må bruke flere programmer for å få
330 et ferdig resultat. Til dags dato har jeg enda ikke funnet et video-
331 og fotoprogram som kan tilfredstillende fullføre en oppgave.&lt;/p&gt;

333 &lt;p&gt;Så man kan klare og fullføre en oppgave, men i verste fall må man
334 innom 3-4 programmer for å få det til. Så jeg har enda ikke til dags
335 dato sett at et program fungere 100% til alt.&lt;/p&gt;

337 &lt;p&gt;Det programmet jeg har best erfaring til er
338 &lt;a href=&quot;http://cinelerra.org/&quot;&gt;cinelerra&lt;/a&gt;, men dessverre har det
339 også tendenser og krasje av og til uten grunn.&lt;/p&gt;

341 Lydsystemet kan også være et mareritt. Konkret snakker jeg om når du
342 bruker for eksempel et smartboard, så følger det med USB-lydkort på
343 disse. Problemet ligger her i at systemet ikke vil velge rett
344 lydkort, så man må inn med padevchooser for å sette opp PulseAudio
345 til og velge at USB-lydkortet skal brukes. Det blir for tungvindt for
346 lærene, de ønsker at ting skal fungere med en gang. (min løsning på
347 det problemet ble at jeg måtte deaktivere lydkortet som fantes på
348 maskinen) men da må man bestandig slå på smartboard-tavla.

350 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hvilken fri programvare bruker du til daglig?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

352 Programmene jeg bruker mest av er: Rosegarden, jack, qsynth, audacity,
353 k3b, openttd og libreoffice.

358 Jeg tror det må bevisstgjøring av Skolene til, dvs. reklamere høylytt
359 og fortelle og vise de andre skolene at frie programvarer faktisk
360 fungere. Jeg trur faktisk mange ikke vet at det finnes frie

431 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Who are you, and how do you spend your days?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

433 &lt;p&gt;My name is Jürgen Leibner, I&#39;m 49 years old and living in
434 Bielefeld, a town in northern Germany. I worked nearly 20 years as
435 certified engineer in the department for plant design and layout of an
436 international company for machinery and equipment. Since 2011 I&#39;m a
437 certified technical writer (tekom e.V.) and doing technical
438 documentations for a steam turbine manufacturer. From April this year
439 I will manage the department of technical documentation at a
440 manufacturer of automation and assembly line engineering.&lt;/p&gt;

442 &lt;p&gt;My first contact with linux was around 1993. Since that time I used
443 it at work and at home repeatedly but not exclusively as I do now at
444 home since 2006.&lt;/p&gt;

446 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux/Debian Edu
447 project?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

449 &lt;p&gt;Once a day in the early year of 2001 when I wanted to fetch my
450 daughter from primary school, there was a teacher sitting in the
451 middle of 20 old computers trying to boot them and he failed. I helped
452 him to get them booting. That was seen by the school director and she
453 asked me if I would like to manage that the school gets all that old
454 computers in use. I answered: &quot;Yes&quot;.&lt;/p&gt;

456 &lt;p&gt;Some weeks later every of the 10 classrooms had one computer
457 running Windows98. I began to collect old computers and equipment as
458 gifts and installed the first computer room with a peer-to-peer
459 network. I did my work at school without being payed in my spare time
460 and with a lot of fun. About one year later the school was connected
461 to Internet and a local area network was installed in the school
462 building. That was the time to have a server and I knew it must be a
463 Linux server to be able to fulfil all the wishes of the teachers and
464 being able to do this in a transparent and economic way, without extra
465 costs for things like licence and software. So I searched for a
466 school server system running under Linux and I found a couple of
467 people nearby who founded &#39;skolelinux.de&#39;. It was the Skolelinux
468 prerelease 32 I first tried out for being used at the school. I
469 managed the IT of that school until the municipal authority took over
470 the IT management and centralised the services for all schools in
471 Bielefeld in December of 2006.&lt;/p&gt;

473 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux/Debian
474 Edu?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

476 &lt;p&gt;When I&#39;m looking back to the beginning, there were other advantages
477 for me as today.&lt;/p&gt;

479 &lt;p&gt;In the past there were advantages like:&lt;/p&gt;

483 &lt;li&gt;I don&#39;t need to buy it so it generates no costs to the school as
484 they had little money to spent for computers and software.&lt;/li&gt;

486 &lt;li&gt;It has a licence which grands all rights to use it without
487 cost.&lt;/li&gt;

489 &lt;li&gt;It was more able to fit all requirements of a server system for
490 schools than a Microsoft server system, even if there are only Windows
491 clients because of it&#39;s preconfigured overall concept of being a
492 infrastructure solution and community for schools, not only a
493 server&lt;/li&gt;

495 &lt;li&gt;I was able to configure the server to the needs of the
496 school.&lt;/li&gt;

500 &lt;p&gt;Today some of the advantages has been lost, changed or new ones

506 now.&lt;/li&gt;

508 &lt;li&gt;They are today mostly managed from central IT departments which
509 have own concepts which often do not fit to Debian Edu concepts
510 because they are to close to Microsoft ideology.&lt;/li&gt;

512 &lt;li&gt;With the Squeeze version of Debian Edu which now uses GOsa² for
513 management I feel more able to manage the daily tasks than with the
514 interfaces used in the past.&lt;/li&gt;

516 &lt;li&gt;It is more modular than in the past and fits even better to the
517 different needs.&lt;/li&gt;

519 &lt;li&gt;The documentation is usable and gets better every day.&lt;/li&gt;

521 &lt;li&gt;More people than ever before are using Debian Edu all over the
522 world and so the community, which is an very important part I think,
523 is sharing knowledge and minds.&lt;/li&gt;

525 &lt;li&gt;Most, maybe all, of the technical requirements for schools are
526 solved today by Debian Edu. &lt;/li&gt;

531 Edu?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

536 their product portfolio for serving schools with concepts or even
537 whole municipality areas.&lt;/li&gt;

540 enough lobbyists which promote free and open software to
541 politicians.&lt;/li&gt;

549 &lt;p&gt;I use Debian stable on my home server and on my little desktop
550 computer. On my laptop I use Debian testing/sid. The applications I
551 use on my laptop and my desktop are Open/Libre-office, Iceweasel,
552 KMail, DigiKam, Amarok, Dolphin, okular and all the other programs I
553 need from the KDE environment. On console I use newsbeuter, mutt,
554 screen, irssi and all the other famous and useful tools.&lt;/p&gt;

556 &lt;p&gt;My home server provides mail services with exim, dovecot, roundcube
557 and mutt over ssh on the console, file services with samba, NFS,
558 rsync, web services with apache, moinmoin-wiki, multimedia services
559 with gallery2 and mediatomb and database services with MySQL for me
560 and the whole family. I probably forgot something.&lt;/p&gt;

599 fribrukskartet OpenStreetmap bedre. Der fremmer bruksvilkårene
600 nyskapning og lar meg skape nye tjenester uten å måtte søke om

603 &lt;p&gt;En annen problemstilling er jo sikkerhet til fjells og til sjøs.
604 Mon tro hvor mange ulykker på sjøen som kunne vært unngått hvis
605 sjøkartdata var tilgjengelig uten bruksbegrensninger, slik at enhver
606 med GPS eller kartplotter tilnærmet kostnadsfritt kunne sikre seg mest
607 mulig oppdaterte sjøkart? Det hjelper jo ikke at offentlige etater
608 har enkel tilgang til sjøkartene når det samme ikke gjelder hver
609 båtkaptein og småbåtfører. Jeg tror samfunnet som helhet hadde tjent
610 på å unngå kostnadene ved disse ulykkene ved å tvinge sjøkartverket
611 til å publisere sine kartdata på Internet uten bruksbegresninger.&lt;/p&gt;

625 common hair/beard cutter, bought in a electrical shop here in Norway.
626 But the last ones have not really been up to the task. My last
627 cutter, some model from Braun, could only cut a few of my hairs at the
628 time, and cutting my head took forever. And the one before that did
629 not work very well either. We have looked for something better for a
630 while, but it was not until I ended up visiting a hairdresser that we
631 discovered that there are indeed better tools available. But these
632 are not marketed and sold to &quot;regular consumers&quot;. The hair saloons
633 can get them through their suppliers, but their suppliers only sell
634 companies. The models they sell, are very different from the ones
635 available from Elkjøp and Lefdal. The main difference is their
636 efficiency. It would cut my hair in 5 minutes, instead of the 30-40
637 minutes required by my impotent Braun. The hairdresser I visited had
638 a Panasonic ER160, which unfortunately is no longer available from the
639 producer. But I found it had a successor, the Panasonic ER1611.&lt;/p&gt;

641 &lt;p&gt;The next step was to find somewhere to buy it. This was not
642 straight forward. The list of suppliers I got from the hairdresser
643 did not want to sell anything to me. But searching for the model on
644 the web we found a supplier in Norway willing to sell it to us for
645 around NOK 4000,-. This was a bit much. We kept searching and
646 finally found a Danish supplier
