14

The third wheezy based beta release of Debian Edu was wrapped up
15 today. This is the release announcement from Holger Levsen:

16
17

18
Hi,

19
20
it is my pleasure to announce the third beta release (beta 2 for
21 short) of Debian Edu /
22 Skolelinux based on Debian Wheezy!

23
24
Please test these images extensivly, if no new problems are found
25 we plan to do this final Debian Edu Wheezy release this coming
26 weekend. We are not aware of any major problems or blockers in beta2,
27 if you find something, please notify us immediately!

28
29
(More about the remaining steps for the Edu Wheezy release in
30 another mail to the edu list tonight or tomorrow...)

31
32
Noteworthy changes and software updates for Debian Edu 7.1+edu0~b2
33 compared to beta1:

34
35

36
37
The KDE proxy setup has been adjusted to use the provided wpad.dat. This
38 also gets Chromium to use this proxy.

39
Install kdepim-groupware with KDE desktops to make sure korganizer
40 understand ical/dav sources.

41
Increased default maximum size of /var/spool/squid and /skole/backup on the
42 main server.

43
A source DVD image containing all source packages is now available as well.

44
Updates for chromium (29.0.1547.57-1~deb7u1), imagemagick
45 (6.7.7.10-5+deb7u2), php5 (5.4.4-14+deb7u4), libmodplug

83
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

84
85
Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
86 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
87 configured school network. Immediately after installation a school
88 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
89 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
90 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
91 initial installation of the main server from CD or USB stick all other
92 machines can be installed via the network. The provided school server
93 provides LDAP database and Kerberos authentication service,
94 centralized home directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other
95 services. The desktop contains more than 60 educational software
96 packages and more are available from the Debian archive, and schools
97 can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE and Xfce desktop environment.

98
99
This is the seventh test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
100 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
101 Squeeze release.

102
103
Notes for upgrades from Alpha Prereleases

104
105
Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
106 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
107 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
108 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (1) Keep
109 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined on the mailing list. (2)
110 Accept the new version of gosa.conf and replace both contained admin
111 password placeholders with the password hashes found in the old one
112 (backup copy!). In both cases all users need to change their password
113 to make sure a password is set for CIFS access to their home
114 directory.

115
116
117
cheers,
118
Holger

127

128

I was introduced to the
129 Freedombox project
130 in 2010, when Eben Moglen presented his vision about serving the need
131 of non-technical people to keep their personal information private and
132 within the legal protection of their own homes. The idea is to give
133 people back the power over their network and machines, and return
134 Internet back to its intended peer-to-peer architecture. Instead of
135 depending on a central service, the Freedombox will give everyone
136 control over their own basic infrastructure.

137
138
I've intended to join the effort since then, but other tasks have
139 taken priority. But this summers nasty news about the misuse of trust
140 and privilege exercised by the "western" intelligence gathering
141 communities increased my eagerness to contribute to a point where I
142 actually started working on the project a while back.

143
144
The initial
145 Debian initiative based on the vision from Eben Moglen, is to
146 create a simple and cheap Debian based appliance that anyone can hook
147 up in their home and get access to secure and private services and
148 communication. The initial deployment platform have been the
149 Dreamplug,
150 which is a piece of hardware I do not own. So to be able to test what
151 the current Freedombox setup look like, I had to come up with a way to install
152 it on some hardware I do have access to. I have rewritten the
153 freedom-maker
154 image build framework to use .deb packages instead of only copying
155 setup into the boot images, and thanks to this rewrite I am able to
156 set up any machine supported by Debian Wheezy as a Freedombox, using
157 the previously mentioned deb (and a few support debs for packages
158 missing in Debian).

159
160
The current Freedombox setup consist of a set of bootstrapping
161 scripts
162 (freedombox-setup),
163 and a administrative web interface
164 (plinth + exmachina +
165 withsqlite), as well as a privacy enhancing proxy based on
166 privoxy
167 (freedombox-privoxy). There is also a web/javascript based XMPP
168 client (jwchat)
169 trying (unsuccessfully so far) to talk to the XMPP server
170 (ejabberd). The
171 web interface is pluggable, and the goal is to use it to enable OpenID
172 services, mesh network connectivity, use of TOR, etc, etc. Not much of
173 this is really working yet, see
174 the
175 project TODO for links to GIT repositories. Most of the code is
176 on github at the moment. The HTTP proxy is operational out of the
177 box, and the admin web interface can be used to add/remove plinth
178 users. I've not been able to do anything else with it so far, but
179 know there are several branches spread around github and other places
180 with lots of half baked features.

181
182
Anyway, if you want to have a look at the current state, the
183 following recipes should work to give you a test machine to poke
184 at.

185
186
Debian Wheezy amd64

187
188

189
190
Fetch normal Debian Wheezy installation ISO.

191
Boot from it, either as CD or USB stick.

192

Press [tab] on the boot prompt and add this as a boot argument
193 to the Debian installer:

194
url=http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/preseed-wheezy.dat

195
196
Answer the few language/region/password questions and pick disk to
197 install on.

198
199
When the installation is finished and the machine have rebooted a
200 few times, your Freedombox is ready for testing.

201
202

203
204
Raspberry Pi Raspbian

205
206

207
208
Fetch a Raspbian SD card image, create SD card.

209
Boot from SD card, extend file system to fill the card completely.

210

Log in and add this to /etc/sources.list:

211

212 deb http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox wheezy main
213

214

Run this as root:

215

216 wget -O - http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/BE1A583D.asc | \
217 apt-key add -
218 apt-get update
219 apt-get install freedombox-setup
220 /usr/lib/freedombox/setup
221

222
Reboot into your freshly created Freedombox.

223
224

225
226
You can test it on other architectures too, but because the
227 freedombox-privoxy package is binary, it will only work as intended on
228 the architectures where I have had time to build the binary and put it
229 in my APT repository. But do not let this stop you. It is only a
230 short "apt-get source -b freedombox-privoxy" away. :)

231
232
Note that by default Freedombox is a DHCP server on the
233 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, so if this is your subnet be careful and turn
234 off the DHCP server by running "update-rc.d isc-dhcp-server
235 disable" as root.

236
237
Please let me know if this works for you, or if you have any
238 problems. We gather on the IRC channel
239 #freedombox on
240 irc.debian.org and the
241 project
242 mailing list.

243
244
Once you get your freedombox operational, you can visit
245 http://your-host-name:8001/ to see the state of the plint
246 welcome screen (dead end - do not be surprised if you are unable to
247 get past it), and next visit http://your-host-name:8001/help/
248 to look at the rest of plinth. The default user is 'admin' and the
249 default password is 'secret'.

257

258

276 Wikipedia
277 og Jon Wessel-Aas.

278
279
Hva er problemet, tenkter du kanskje? Et åpenbart problem er at
280 medienes kildevern i praksis blir radert ut.

291
292
De fleste partiene var mot, kun to partier stemte for. Høyre og
293 Arbeiderpartiet. Og både Høyre og Arbeiderpartiet i Oslo har
294 DLD-forkjempere på toppen av sine lister (har ikke sjekket de andre
295 fylkene). Det er dermed helt uaktuelt for meg å stemme på disse
296 partiene. Her er oversikten over partienes valglister i Oslo, med
297 informasjon om hvem som stemte hva i første DLD-votering i Stortinget,
298 basert på informasjon fra mine venner i
299 Holder de

535

536

The second wheezy based beta release of Debian Edu was wrapped up
537 today, slightly delayed because of some bugs in the initial Windows
538 integration fixes . This is the release announcement:

539
540
New features for Debian Edu 7.1+edu0~b1 released 2013-08-22

541
542
These are the release notes for Debian Edu / Skolelinux
543 7.1+edu0~b1, based on Debian with codename "Wheezy".

544
545
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

546
547
Debian Edu, also known as
548 Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
549 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
550 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
551 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
552 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
553 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
554 the main server from CD or USB stick all other machines can be
555 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
556 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
557 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The
558 desktop contains
559 more
560 than 60 educational software packages and more are available from
561 the Debian archive, and schools can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE
562 and Xfce desktop environment.

563
564
This is the sixth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically this
565 is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the Squeeze
566 release.

567
568
ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
569 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
570 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
571 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (1) Keep
572 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined
573 on
574 the mailing list. (2) Accept the new version of gosa.conf and
575 replace both contained admin password placeholders with the password
576 hashes found in the old one (backup copy!). In both cases every user
577 need to change their their password to make sure a password is set for
578 CIFS access to their home directory.

579
580
Software updates

581
582

583
584
Added ssh askpass packages to default installation, to ensure ssh
585 work also without a attached tty.

586
Add the command-not-found package to the default installation to
587 make it easier to figure out where to find missing command line
588 tools. Please note, that the command 'update-command-not-found'
589 has to be run as root to actually make it useful (internet access
590 required).

591
592

593
594
Other changes

595
596

597
598
Adjusted the USB stick ISO image build to include every tool
599 needed for desktop=xfce installations.

600
Adjust thin-client-server task to work when installing from USB
601 stick ISO image.

602
Made new grub artwork (changed png from indexed to RGB format).

603
Minor cleanup in the CUPS setup.

604
Make sure that bootstrapping of the Samba domain really happens
605 during installation of the main server and adjust SID handling to
606 cope with this.

607
Make Samba passwords changeable (again) via GOsa².

608
Fix generation of LM and NT password hashes via GOsa² to avoid
609 empty password hashes.

610
Adapted Samba machine domain joining to latest change in the
611 smbldap-tools Perl package, fixing bugs blocking Windows machines
612 from joining the Samba domain.

613
614

615
616
Known issues

617
618

619
620
KDE fails to understand the wpad.dat file provided, causing it to
621 not use the http proxy as it should.

622
Chromium also fails to use the proxy when using the KDE desktop
623 (using the KDE configuration).

624
625

626
627
Where to get it

628

669

Earlier, I reported about
670 my
671 problems using an Intel SSD 520 Series 180 GB disk. Friday I was
672 told by IBM that the original disk should be thrown away. And as
673 there no longer was a problem if I bricked the firmware, I decided
674 today to try to install Intel firmware to replace the Lenovo firmware
675 currently on the disk.

676
677
I searched the Intel site for firmware, and found
678 issdfut_2.0.4.iso
679 (aka Intel SATA Solid-State Drive Firmware Update Tool) which
680 according to the site should contain the latest firmware for SSD
681 disks. I inserted the broken disk in one of my spare laptops and
682 booted the ISO from a USB stick. The disk was recognized, but the
683 program claimed the newest firmware already were installed and refused
684 to insert any Intel firmware. So no change, and the disk is still
685 unable to handle write load. :( I guess the only way to get them
686 working would be if Lenovo releases new firmware. No idea how likely
687 that is. Anyway, just blogging about this test for completeness. I
688 got a working Samsung disk, and see no point in spending more time on
689 the broken disks.

694
90 percent done with the Norwegian draft translation of Free Culture

695

696

697

698

It has been a while since my last update. Since last summer, I
699 have worked on a Norwegian
700 docbook version of the 2004 book
701 Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig,
702 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
703 law. Yesterday, I finally broken the 90% mark, when counting the
704 number of strings to translate. Due to real life constraints, I have
705 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
706 I found time to work on it again. Still lots of work left, but the
707 first draft is nearing completion. I created a graph to show the
708 progress of the translation:

709
710

711
712
When the first draft is done, the translated text need to be
713 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG
714 drawings need to be fixed. There are probably also some index entries
715 missing that need to be added. This can be done by comparing the
716 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
717 English docbook version with the paper version. Last, the colophon
718 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
719 done. I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
720 of the index pages. All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
721 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
722 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.

723
724
There is still need for translators and people with docbook
725 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
726 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
727 translation and proof reading. And I would like the figures to be
728 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them. Any SVG master
729 around? There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.
730 If you want to help, please get in touch with me, and check out the
731 project files currently available from
732 github.

733
734
If you are curious what the translated book currently look like,
735 the updated
736 PDF
737 and
738 EPUB
739 are published on github. The HTML version is published as well, but
740 github hand it out with MIME type text/plain, confusing browsers, so I
741 saw no point in linking to that version.

749

750

The first wheezy based beta release of Debian Edu was wrapped up
751 today. This is the release announcement:

752
753
New features for Debian Edu 7.1+edu0~b0 released
754 2013-07-27

755
756
These are the release notes for for Debian Edu / Skolelinux
757 7.1+edu0~b0, based on Debian with codename "Wheezy".

758
759
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

760
761
Debian Edu, also known as
762 Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
763 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
764 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
765 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
766 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
767 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
768 the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all other machines can be
769 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
770 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
771 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The
772 desktop contains
773 more
774 than 60 educational software packages and more are available from
775 the Debian archive, and schools can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE
776 and Xfce desktop environment.

777
778
This is the fifth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
779 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
780 Squeeze release.

781
782
ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
783 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
784 release.

785
786
Software updates

787
788

789
790
Switched roaming workstation profiles from wicd to network-manager
791 for network configuration, as wicd didn't work any more.

792
Changed version numbers of patched gosa and libpam-mklocaluser
793 packages to make sure our locally patched versions will be replaced
794 by the official packages when they are released from Debian. Those
795 installing alpha version need to reinstall or manually downgrade gosa
796 and libpam-mklocaluser.

797
Added bluetooth tools to the default desktop (bluedevil, blueman).

798
Added tools for sharing the desktop on KDE (krdc, krfb).

799
Added valgrind to the default installation for easier debugging of
800 crash bugs.

801
802

803
804
Other changes

805
806

807
808
Fixed artwork package to work with gnome, no longer break
809 desktop=gnome installations.

810
Adjusted installer to now work when forced to use a proxy with the
811 netinst CD.

812
Fixed code detecting and setting/loading hardware specific
813 setup/firmware to work more robust out of the box.

814
Adjusted Kerberos setup to detect realm and server settings at
815 install time instead of dynamically at run time. This avoid a crash
816 with krb5-auth-dialog on diskless workstations without a DNS name.

817
Worked around misfeature in network-manager not calling the dhclient
818 exit hooks, causing automatic proxy configuration and automatic host
819 name setting at run time to work again.

820
Fixed feature setting the default Iceweasel start page from URL
821 fetched from LDAP, to allow schools to set the global default by
822 updating the dc=skole,dc=skolelinux,dc=no LDAP object.

823
Changed default host name on all networked machines to be unique
824 (generated from MAC or reverse DNS) after boot.

825
Adjusted partition sizes to make sure they are big enough.

826
827

828
829
Known issues

830
831

832
833
Grub is missing the new artwork.

834
KDE fail to understand the wpad.dat file provided, causing it to
835 not use the http proxy as it should.

836
Chromium also fail to use the proxy.

837
838

839
840
Where to get it

841
842
To download the multiarch netinstall CD release you can use

878
How to fix a Thinkpad X230 with a broken 180 GB SSD disk

879

880

881

882

Today I switched to
883 my
884 new laptop. I've previously written about the problems I had with
885 my new Thinkpad X230, which was delivered with an
886 180
887 GB Intel SSD disk with Lenovo firmware that did not handle
888 sustained writes. My hardware supplier have been very forthcoming in
889 trying to find a solution, and after first trying with another
890 identical 180 GB disks they decided to send me a 256 GB Samsung SSD
891 disk instead to fix it once and for all. The Samsung disk survived
892 the installation of Debian with encrypted disks (filling the disk with
893 random data during installation killed the first two), and I thus
894 decided to trust it with my data. I have installed it as a Debian Edu
895 Wheezy roaming workstation hooked up with my Debian Edu Squeeze main
896 server at home using Kerberos and LDAP, and will use it as my work
897 station from now on.

898
899
As this is a solid state disk with no moving parts, I believe the
900 Debian Wheezy default installation need to be tuned a bit to increase
901 performance and increase life time of the disk. The Linux kernel and
902 user space applications do not yet adjust automatically to such
903 environment. To make it easier for my self, I created a draft Debian
904 package ssd-setup to handle this tuning. The
905 source
906 for the ssd-setup package is available from collab-maint, and it
907 is set up to adjust the setup of the machine by just installing the
908 package. If there is any non-SSD disk in the machine, the package
909 will refuse to install, as I did not try to write any logic to sort
910 file systems in SSD and non-SSD file systems.

911
912
I consider the package a draft, as I am a bit unsure how to best
913 set up Debian Wheezy with an SSD. It is adjusted to my use case,
914 where I set up the machine with one large encrypted partition (in
915 addition to /boot), put LVM on top of this and set up partitions on
916 top of this again. See the README file in the package source for the
917 references I used to pick the settings. At the moment these
918 parameters are tuned:

919
920

921
922
Set up cryptsetup to pass TRIM commands to the physical disk
923 (adding discard to /etc/crypttab)

924
925
Set up LVM to pass on TRIM commands to the underlying device (in
926 this case a cryptsetup partition) by changing issue_discards from
927 0 to 1 in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf.

928
929
Set relatime as a file system option for ext3 and ext4 file
930 systems.

931
932
Tell swap to use TRIM commands by adding 'discard' to
933 /etc/fstab.

934
935
Change I/O scheduler from cfq to deadline using a udev rule.

936
937
Run fstrim on every ext3 and ext4 file system every night (from
938 cron.daily).

939
940
Adjust sysctl values vm.swappiness to 1 and vm.vfs_cache_pressure
941 to 50 to reduce the kernel eagerness to swap out processes.

942
943

944
945
During installation, I cancelled the part where the installer fill
946 the disk with random data, as this would kill the SSD performance for
947 little gain. My goal with the encrypted file system is to ensure
948 those stealing my laptop end up with a brick and not a working
949 computer. I have no hope in keeping the really resourceful people
950 from getting the data on the disk (see
951 XKCD #538 for an explanation why).
952 Thus I concluded that adding the discard option to crypttab is the
953 right thing to do.

954
955
I considered using the noop I/O scheduler, as several recommended
956 it for SSD, but others recommended deadline and a benchmark I found
957 indicated that deadline might be better for interactive use.

958
959
I also considered using the 'discard' file system option for ext3
960 and ext4, but read that it would give a performance hit ever time a
961 file is removed, and thought it best to that that slowdown once a day
962 instead of during my work.

963
964
My package do not set up tmpfs on /var/run, /var/lock and /tmp, as
965 this is already done by Debian Edu.

966
967
I have not yet started on the user space tuning. I expect
968 iceweasel need some tuning, and perhaps other applications too, but
969 have not yet had time to investigate those parts.

970
971
The package should work on Ubuntu too, but I have not yet tested it
972 there.

973
974
As for the answer to the question in the title of this blog post,
975 as far as I know, the only solution I know about is to replace the
976 disk. It might be possible to flash it with Intel firmware instead of
977 the Lenovo firmware. But I have not tried and did not want to do so
978 without approval from Lenovo as I wanted to keep the warranty on the
979 disk until a solution was found and they wanted the broken disks
980 back.

988

989

A few days ago, I wrote about
990 the
991 problems I experienced with my new X230 and its SSD disk, which
992 was dying during installation because it is unable to cope with
993 sustained write. My supplier is in contact with
994 Lenovo, and they wanted to send a
995 replacement disk to try to fix the problem. They decided to send an
996 identical model, so my hopes for a permanent fix was slim.

997
998
Anyway, today I got the replacement disk and tried to install
999 Debian Edu Wheezy with encrypted disk on it. The new disk have the
1000 same firmware version as the original. This time my hope raised
1001 slightly as the installation progressed, as the original disk used to
1002 die after 4-7% of the disk was written to, while this time it kept
1003 going past 10%, 20%, 40% and even past 50%. But around 60%, the disk
1004 died again and I was back on square one. I still do not have a new
1005 laptop with a disk I can trust. I can not live with a disk that might
1006 lock up when I download a new
1007 Debian Edu / Skolelinux ISO or
1008 other large files. I look forward to hearing from my supplier with
