47 <description><p
>Wireless mesh networks are self organising and self healing
48 networks that can be used to connect computers across small and large
49 areas, depending on the radio technology used. Normal wifi equipment
50 can be used to create home made radio networks, and there are several
51 successful examples like
52 <a href=
"http://www.freifunk.net/
">Freifunk
</a
> and
53 <a href=
"http://www.awmn.net/
">Athens Wireless Metropolitan Network
</a
>
55 <a href=
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wireless_community_networks_by_region#Greece
">wikipedia
56 for a large list
</a
>) around the globe. To give you an idea how it
57 work, check out the nice overview of the Kiel Freifunk community which
58 can be seen from their
59 <a href=
"http://freifunk.in-kiel.de/ffmap/nodes.html
">dynamically
60 updated node graph and map
</a
>, where one can see how the mesh nodes
61 automatically handle routing and recover from nodes disappearing.
62 There is also a small community mesh network group in Oslo, Norway,
63 and that is the main topic of this blog post.
</p
>
65 <p
>I
've wanted to check out mesh networks for a while now, and hoped
66 to do it as part of my involvement with the
<a
67 href=
"http://www.nuug.no/
">NUUG member organisation
</a
> community, and
68 my recent involvement in
69 <a href=
"https://wiki.debian.org/FreedomBox
">the Freedombox project
</a
>
70 finally lead me to give mesh networks some priority, as I suspect a
71 Freedombox should use mesh networks to connect neighbours and family
72 when possible, given that most communication between people are
73 between those nearby (as shown for example by research on Facebook
74 communication patterns). It also allow people to communicate without
75 any central hub to tap into for those that want to listen in on the
76 private communication of citizens, which have become more and more
77 important over the years.
</p
>
79 <p
>So far I have only been able to find one group of people in Oslo
80 working on community mesh networks, over at the hack space
81 <a href=
"http://hackeriet.no/
">Hackeriet
</a
> at Husmania. They seem to
82 have started with some Freifunk based effort using OLSR, called
83 <a href=
"http://oslo.freifunk.net/index.php?title=Main_Page
">the Oslo
84 Freifunk project
</a
>, but that effort is now dead and the people
85 behind it have moved on to a batman-adv based system called
86 <a href=
"http://meshfx.org/trac
">meshfx
</a
>. Unfortunately the wiki
87 site for the Oslo Freifunk project is no longer possible to update to
88 reflect this fact, so the old project page can
't be updated to point to
89 the new project. A while back, the people at Hackeriet invited people
90 from the Freifunk community to Oslo to talk about mesh networks. I
91 came across this video where Hans Jørgen Lysglimt interview the
92 speakers about this talk (from
93 <a href=

97 <p
>I mentioned OLSR and batman-adv, which are mesh routing protocols.
98 There are heaps of different protocols, and I am still struggling to
99 figure out which one would be
"best
" for some definitions of best, but
100 given that the community mesh group in Oslo is so small, I believe it
101 is best to hook up with the existing one instead of trying to create a
102 completely different setup, and thus I have decided to focus on
103 batman-adv for now. It sure help me to know that the very cool
104 <a href=
"http://www.servalproject.org/
">Serval project in Australia
</a
>
105 is using batman-adv as their meshing technology when it create a self
106 organizing and self healing telephony system for disaster areas and
107 less industrialized communities. Check out this cool video presenting

113 <p
>According to the wikipedia page on
114 <a href=
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_mesh_network
">Wireless
115 mesh network
</a
> there are around
70 competing schemes for routing
116 packets across mesh networks, and OLSR, B.A.T.M.A.N. and
117 B.A.T.M.A.N. advanced are protocols used by several free software
118 based community mesh networks.
</p
>
120 <p
>The batman-adv protocol is a bit special, as it provide layer
2
121 (as in ethernet ) routing, allowing ipv4 and ipv6 to work on the same
122 network. One way to think about it is that it provide a mesh based
123 vlan you can bridge to or handle like any other vlan connected to your
124 computer. The required drivers are already in the Linux kernel at
125 least since Debian Wheezy, and it is fairly easy to set up. A
126 <a href=

127 introduction

144 other mesh node nearby, your computer will be connected to the mesh
145 network and can communicate with any mesh node that is connected to
146 any of the nodes in your network of nodes. :)
</p
>
148 <p
>My initial plan was to reuse my old Linksys WRT54GL as a mesh node,
149 but that seem to be very hard, as I have not been able to locate a
150 firmware supporting batman-adv. If anyone know how to use that old
151 wifi access point with batman-adv these days, please let me know.

">The
163 reliability of wireless backhaul mesh networks

164 learned that Telenor have been experimenting with mesh networks at
165 Grünerløkka in Oslo. So mesh networks are also interesting for
166 commercial companies, even though Telenor discovered that it was hard
167 to figure out a good business plan for mesh networking and as far as I
168 know have closed down the experiment. Perhaps Telenor or others would
169 be interested in a cooperation?

>About Debian Edu and Skolelinux
</p
>
372 <p
>Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
373 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
374 configured school network. Immediately after installation a school
375 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
376 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
377 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
378 initial installation of the main server from CD or USB stick all other
379 machines can be installed via the network. The provided school server
380 provides LDAP database and Kerberos authentication service,
381 centralized home directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other
382 services. The desktop contains more than
60 educational software
383 packages and more are available from the Debian archive, and schools
384 can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE and Xfce desktop environment.
</p
>
386 <p
>This is the seventh test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
387 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
388 Squeeze release.
</p
>
390 <p
>Notes for upgrades from Alpha Prereleases
</p
>
392 <p
>Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
393 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
394 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
395 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (
1) Keep
396 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined on the mailing list. (
2)
397 Accept the new version of gosa.conf and replace both contained admin
398 password placeholders with the password hashes found in the old one
399 (backup copy!). In both cases all users need to change their password
400 to make sure a password is set for CIFS access to their home

415 <description><p
>I was introduced to the
416 <a href=
"http://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/
">Freedombox project
</a
>
417 in
2010, when Eben Moglen presented his vision about serving the need
418 of non-technical people to keep their personal information private and
419 within the legal protection of their own homes. The idea is to give
420 people back the power over their network and machines, and return
421 Internet back to its intended peer-to-peer architecture. Instead of
422 depending on a central service, the Freedombox will give everyone
423 control over their own basic infrastructure.
</p
>
425 <p
>I
've intended to join the effort since then, but other tasks have
426 taken priority. But this summers nasty news about the misuse of trust
427 and privilege exercised by the
"western
" intelligence gathering
428 communities increased my eagerness to contribute to a point where I
429 actually started working on the project a while back.
</p
>
431 <p
>The
<a href=
"https://alioth.debian.org/projects/freedombox/
">initial
432 Debian initiative
</a
> based on the vision from Eben Moglen, is to
433 create a simple and cheap Debian based appliance that anyone can hook
434 up in their home and get access to secure and private services and
435 communication. The initial deployment platform have been the
436 <a href=
"http://www.globalscaletechnologies.com/t-dreamplugdetails.aspx
">Dreamplug
</a
>,
437 which is a piece of hardware I do not own. So to be able to test what
438 the current Freedombox setup look like, I had to come up with a way to install
439 it on some hardware I do have access to. I have rewritten the
440 <a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/freedom-maker
">freedom-maker
</a
>
441 image build framework to use .deb packages instead of only copying
442 setup into the boot images, and thanks to this rewrite I am able to
443 set up any machine supported by Debian Wheezy as a Freedombox, using
444 the previously mentioned deb (and a few support debs for packages
445 missing in Debian).
</p
>
447 <p
>The current Freedombox setup consist of a set of bootstrapping
449 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/freedombox-setup
">freedombox-setup
</a
>),
450 and a administrative web interface
451 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/Plinth
">plinth
</a
> + exmachina +
452 withsqlite), as well as a privacy enhancing proxy based on
453 <a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/privoxy
">privoxy
</a
>
454 (freedombox-privoxy). There is also a web/javascript based XMPP
455 client (
<a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/jwchat
">jwchat
</a
>)
456 trying (unsuccessfully so far) to talk to the XMPP server
457 (
<a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/ejabberd
">ejabberd
</a
>). The
458 web interface is pluggable, and the goal is to use it to enable OpenID
459 services, mesh network connectivity, use of TOR, etc, etc. Not much of
460 this is really working yet, see
461 <a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/freedombox-todos/blob/master/TODO
">the
462 project TODO
</a
> for links to GIT repositories. Most of the code is
463 on github at the moment. The HTTP proxy is operational out of the
464 box, and the admin web interface can be used to add/remove plinth
465 users. I
've not been able to do anything else with it so far, but
466 know there are several branches spread around github and other places
467 with lots of half baked features.
</p

545 <description><p
>I
552 <a href=
"http://beta.holderdeord.no/issues/innfore-datalagringsdirektivet
">Datalagringsdirektivet
553 (DLD)
</a
>, og innebærer at alle innbyggerne og andre innenfor Norges

</p
>
566 <p
>Hva er problemet, tenkter du kanskje? Et åpenbart problem er at
567 medienes kildevern i praksis blir radert ut.
</p
>
579 <p
>De fleste partiene var mot, kun to partier stemte for. Høyre og
580 Arbeiderpartiet.
583 partiene. Her er oversikten over partienes valglister i Oslo, med

><a href=

">Debian Edu, also known as
835 Skolelinux
</a
>, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
836 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
837 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
838 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
839 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
840 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
841 the main server from CD or USB stick all other machines can be
842 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
843 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
844 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

848 the Debian archive, and schools can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE
849 and Xfce desktop environment.
</p
>
851 <p
>This is the sixth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically this
852 is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the Squeeze
855 <p
>ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
856 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
857 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
858 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (
1) Keep
859 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined
860 <a href=
"http://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/
2013/
08/msg00127.html
">on
861 the mailing list
</a
>. (
2) Accept the new version of gosa.conf and
862 replace both contained admin password placeholders with the password
863 hashes found in the old one (backup copy!). In both cases every user
864 need to change their their password to make sure a password is set for
865 CIFS access to their home directory.

956 <description><p
>Earlier, I reported about

959 told by IBM that the original disk should be thrown away. And as
960 there no longer was a problem if I bricked the firmware, I decided
961 today to try to install Intel firmware to replace the Lenovo firmware
962 currently on the disk.
</p
>
964 <p
>I searched the Intel site for firmware, and found

966 (aka Intel SATA Solid-State Drive Firmware Update Tool) which
967 according to the site should contain the latest firmware for SSD
968 disks. I inserted the broken disk in one of my spare laptops and
969 booted the ISO from a USB stick. The disk was recognized, but the
970 program claimed the newest firmware already were installed and refused
971 to insert any Intel firmware. So no change, and the disk is still
972 unable to handle write load. :( I guess the only way to get them
973 working would be if Lenovo releases new firmware. No idea how likely
974 that is. Anyway, just blogging about this test for completeness. I
975 got a working Samsung disk, and see no point in spending more time on
976 the broken disks.
