  26 Skolelinux</a>, there are quite a lot of educational software.
  27 Created to help teachers teach, and pupils learn.  We have tried to
  28 tag them all using debtags use::learning and role::program, and using
  29 the debtags I was happy to be able to create a collage of the
  30 educational software packages installed by default, sorted by the
  31 debtag field.  Here it is.  Click on a image to learn more about the
  32 program.</p>

 170 I could install Linux on a Packard Bell EasyNote LV computer
 171 preinstalled with Windows 8</a>.  I found a solution, but am horrified
 172 with the obstacles put in the way of Linux users on a laptop with UEFI
 173 and Windows 8.</p>

 175 <p>I never found out if the cause of my problems were the use of UEFI
 176 secure booting or fast boot.  I suspect fast boot was the problem,
 177 causing the firmware to boot directly from HD without considering any
 178 key presses and alternative devices, but do not know UEFI settings
 179 enough to tell.</p>

 181 <p>There is no way to install Linux on the machine in question without
 182 opening the box and disconnecting the hard drive!  This is as far as I
 183 can tell, the only way to get access to the firmware setup menu
 184 without accepting the Windows 8 license agreement.  I am told (and
 185 found description on how to) that it is possible to configure the
 186 firmware setup once booted into Windows 8.  But as I believe the terms
 187 of that agreement are completely unacceptable, accepting the license
 188 was never an alternative.  I do not enter agreements I do not intend
 189 to follow.</p>

 191 <p>I feared I had to return the laptops and ask for a refund, and
 192 waste many hours on this, but luckily there was a way to get it to
 193 work.  But I would not recommend it to anyone planning to run Linux on
 194 it, and I have become sceptical to Windows 8 certified laptops.  Is
 195 this the way Linux will be forced out of the market place, by making
 196 it close to impossible for "normal" users to install Linux without
 197 accepting the Microsoft Windows license terms?  Or at least not
 198 without risking to loose the warranty?</p>

 222       <div class="body"><p>I've run into quite a problem the last few days.  I bought three
 223 new laptops for my parents and a few others.  I bought Packard Bell
 224 Easynote LV to run Kubuntu on and use as their home computer.  But I
 225 am completely unable to figure out how to install Linux on it.  The
 226 computer is preinstalled with Windows 8, and I suspect it uses UEFI
 227 instead of a BIOS to boot.</p>

 229 <p>The problem is that I am unable to get it to PXE boot, and unable
 230 to get it to boot the Linux installer from my USB stick.  I have yet
 231 to try the DVD install, and still hope it will work.  when I turn on
 232 the computer, there is no information on what buttons to press to get
 233 the normal boot menu.  I expect to get some boot menu to select PXE or
 234 USB stick booting.  When booting, it first ask for the language to
 235 use, then for some regional settings, and finally if I will accept the
 236 Windows 8 terms of use.  As these terms are completely unacceptable to
 237 me, I have no other choice but to turn off the computer and try again
 238 to get it to boot the Linux installer.</p>

 240 <p>I have gathered my findings so far on a Linlap page about the
 241 <a href="http://www.linlap.com/packard_bell_easynote_lv">Packard Bell
 242 EasyNote LV</a> model.  If you have any idea how to get Linux
 243 installed on this machine, please get in touch or update that wiki
 244 page.  If I can't find a way to install Linux, I will have to return
 245 the laptop to the seller and find another machine for my parents.</p>

 248 using UEFI and "secure boot" by making it impossible to install Linux

 269 månedene har en ivrig student veiledet av Marius Kotsbak i
 270 <a href="http://www.friprogramvareiskolen.no/">FRiSK</a> testet hva en
 271 kan få til med en datamaskin til NOK 400,- (antagelig 1700,- med
 272 skjerm, tastatur og mus) når det brukes i Skolelinux.  Jeg spurte han
 273 om et intervju.</p>

 275 <p><strong>Hvem er du, og hva driver du med til daglig?</strong></p>

 277 <p>Jeg heter Nirosan Thiyagalingam. Jeg er 24 år og studerer
 278 dataingeniør studiet ved Høgskolen i Sør Trøndelag. Interessen for
 279 data har siden ung alder vært tilstede og jeg har i tillegg alltid
 280 vært glad i å lære nye ting. Med teknologi som endres svært hurtig er
 281 det alltid noe nytt å lære.  Noe som igjen har gjort det svært
 282 interessant å følge med på utviklingen.  Jeg valgte dataingeniør
 283 studiet grunnet ønske om å lære enda mer om programmering og utvikling
 284 av store systemer.</p>

 286 <p><strong>Hvordan kom du i kontakt med Skolelinux-prosjektet?</strong></p>

 288 <p>Skolelinux prosjektet hørte jeg først om i media. Men det var først
 289 når jeg skulle velge bacheloroppgave at jeg fattet mer interesse for
 290 prosjektet. Et enkelt søk på nettet førte meg til skolelinux sine
 291 hjemmesider.  Informasjonen jeg fant der gjorde meg enda nysgjerrig og
 292 jeg valgte derfor en oppgave som gikk ut på å få en
 293 <a href="http://www.raspberrypi.org">Raspberry PI</a>.  Altså en
 294 ultra-billig datamaskin til å kjøre Debian Edu på lik linje med
 295 vanlige datamaskiner. I løpet av prosjektet ble det gjort mye
 296 forskning på nettet. Det var mye jeg måtte forstå rundt hvordan
 297 operativsystemet Linux fungerte før jeg kunne angripe
 298 problemet. Prøvde først å finne ut hvordan man kunne transformere en
 299 vanlig installasjon av Skolelinux til Raspberry PI, men dette var
 300 altfor vanskelig å jeg endte opp med mer spørsmål enn svar. Det ble
 301 videre opprettet kontakt med Skolelinux utviklere på IRC der jeg fikk
 302 diskutert hvilken retning jeg burde gå for å få til en fullverdig
 303 løsning. Det ble bestemt at jeg skulle gå for å først installere
 304 <a href="http://www.raspbian.org/">Raspian</a>. Dette er et
 305 operativsystem basert på Debian spesiallaget for Raspberry Pi sin
 306 maskinvare. Nå som Debian var installert på datamaskinen gjenstod det
 307 å installere de nødvendige Skolelinux pakkene for å få til et
 308 fullverdig system. Disse pakkene ble installert manuelt i første
 309 omgang, men ble senere installert automatisk via et script som Petter
 310 Reinholdtsen laget. Dette scriptet er så enkel å bruke at man er i
 311 gang med installasjonen i løpet av bare 5 minutter. Ikke nok med det,
 312 alt skjer helt automatisk. Alt i alt er jeg veldig fornøyd med
 313 resultatet av installasjonsprosessen. Raspberry Pi er en veldig svak
 314 maskin og det merkes godt når man har installert Skolelinux på
 315 den. Video og 3D-rendering fungerer utrolig dårlig, men nettsurfing og
 316 kontorprogrammer fungerer godt.  Det kan derfor konkluderes med at
 317 datamaskinen er egnet for enkle oppgaver.

 319 <p>Jeg syns det er viktig påpeke at dette kun er startfasen av en slik
 320 løsning. På markedet finnes det nå maskiner som har bedre hardware enn
 321 Raspberry Pi. Det er store muligheter for at man kan klare å
 322 installere Skolelinux på disse også, og da forsvinner nok mest
 323 sannsynlig ytelsesproblemene med Video og 3D rendering også.</p>

 325 <p>Det ble også prøvd med en løsning som gjorde at Raspberry Pi
 326 fungerte som en tynnklient. Denne løsningen hadde langt bedre ytelse
 327 med tanke på hastighet og brukeropplevelse. Men også her var video og
 328 3D rendering dårlig. Det ble brukt en liten Linux distribusjon kalt
 329 <a href="http://www.berryterminal.com/">BerryTerminal</a> for å få til
 330 dette.</p>

 332 <p><strong>Hva er fordelene med Skolelinux slik du ser det?</strong></p>
 333
 334 <p>Fordelen med Skolelinux er mange. At det er gratis er en stor
 335 fordel, men at det er så mange som er med på å utvikle det og
 336 vedlikeholde det er en enda større fordel. Allerede før jeg startet
 337 med prosjektet så jeg mange fordeler, og når jeg nærmet meg sluttfasen
 338 så jeg langt flere. At prosjektet skulle inneha en så høy kvalitet
 339 hadde jeg aldri trodd. En vanlig Skolelinux installasjon har de
 340 nødvendige programmene og funksjonen som både små og store skoler i
 341 tillegg til organisasjoner kan klare seg med.  At prosjektet tilbyr en
 342 så komplett løsning er en kjempefordel.  Installasjonen er knirkefri
 343 og det er svært enkelt å installere og komme i gang.</p>

 345 <p><strong>Hva er ulempene med Skolelinux slik du ser det?</strong></p>

 347 <p>Ulempene jeg ser med prosjektet er ryddigheten av websidene. Selv
 348 om websidene er enkle og konsise er det allikevel ikke appellerende i
 349 like stor grad som for eksempel
 350 <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com">Ubuntu</a> sine sider.  Deres side
 351 tilbyr, i tillegg til godt design og presentasjon, en nettbasert
 352 emulator av deres operativsystem. Dette er en stor fordel slik jeg ser
 353 det.  Bortsett fra dette ser jeg absolutt ingen ulemper med
 354 Skolelinux-prosjektet.</p>

 356 <p><strong>Hvilken fri programvare bruker du til daglig?</strong></p>

 358 <p>Til daglig er jeg en flittig bruker av det åpne media
 359 sentersystemet <a href="http://xbmc.org/">XBMC</a>. Det enorme
 360 samfunnet rundt dette prosjektet har gjort dette til et program som
 361 dekker alles behov. Man kan tilpasse det akkurat slik man vil både med
 362 tanke på utseende og funksjoner ved installere plug-ins eller
 363 scripts.</p>

 365 <p><strong>Hvilken strategi tror du er den rette å bruke for å få
 366 skoler til å ta i bruk fri programvare?</strong></p>

 368 <p>Strategien som burde brukes sett fra mine øyne er
 369 markedsføring. Jeg er sikker på at om flere skoler fikk et lite innsyn
 370 i hvor bra Skolelinux er så ville de ikke nølt med å gå over fra noe
 371 annet som koster de store summer. At skolelinux til de grader tilbyr
 372 en så komplett løsning bure komme frem. Enten via reklamekampanjer
 373 eller ved å sende ut folk til skoler for så å la skolenettverk
 374 ansvarlige få teste ut hvordan Skolelinux fungerer i praksis. Om det
 375 i tillegg ble utviklet gode websider og en emulator for å la brukere
 376 prøve operativsystemet ville nok dette ha styrket inntrykket
 377 betraktelig.</p>

 393 an operating system based on Debian intended for use in schools.  It
 394 contain a turn-key solution for the computer network provided to
 395 pupils in the primary schools.  It provide both the central server,
 396 network boot servers and desktop environments with heaps of
 397 educational software.  The project was founded almost 12 years ago,
 398 2001-07-02.  If you want to support the project, which is in need for
 399 cash to fund developer gatherings and other project related activity,

 403 <p>A topic that come up again and again on the Debian Edu mailing
 404 lists and elsewhere, is the question on how to transform a Debian or
 405 Ubuntu installation into a Debian Edu installation.  It isn't very
 406 hard, and last week I wrote a script to replicate the steps done by
 407 the Debian Edu installer.</p>

 409 <p>The script,
 410 <a href="http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/debian-edu/branches/wheezy/debian-edu-config/share/debian-edu-config/tools/debian-edu-bless?view=markup">debian-edu-bless<a/>
 411 in the debian-edu-config package, will go through these six steps and
 412 transform an existing Debian Wheezy or Ubuntu (untested) installation
 413 into a Debian Edu Workstation:</p>

 418 <li>Create /etc/debian-edu/config with the wanted configuration.</li>
 419 <li>Install debian-edu-install to load preseeding values and pull in
 420     our configuration.</li>

 422     /etc/debian-edu/config, and run tasksel to install packages
 423     according to the profile specified in the config above,
 424     overriding some of the Debian automation machinery.</li>
 425 <li>Run debian-edu-cfengine-D installation to configure everything
 426     that could not be done using preseeding.</li>
 427 <li>Ask for a reboot to enable all the configuration changes.</li>

 431 <p>There are some steps in the Debian Edu installation that can not be
 432 replicated like this.  Disk partitioning and LVM setup, for example.
 433 So this script just assume there is enough disk space to install all
 434 the needed packages.</p>

 436 <p>The script was created to help a Debian Edu student working on
 437 setting up <a href="http://www.raspberrypi.org">Raspberry Pi</a> as a
 438 Debian Edu client, and using it he can take the existing
 439 <a href="http://www.raspbian.org/FrontPage‎">Raspbian</a> installation and
 440 transform it into a fully functioning Debian Edu Workstation (or
 441 Roaming Workstation, or whatever :).</p>

 661 for Debian Wheezy</a> was waiting in my mail box.  This is a great
 662 Debian release, and I expect to move my machines at home over to it fairly
 663 soon.</p>

 665 <p>The new debian release contain heaps of new stuff, and one program
 666 in particular make me very happy to see included.  The
 667 <a href="http://scratch.mit.edu/">Scratch</a> program, made famous by
 668 the <a href="http://www.code.org/">Teach kids code</a> movement, is
 669 included for the first time.  Alongside similar programs like
 670 <a href="http://edu.kde.org/kturtle/">kturtle</a> and
 671 <a href="http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Activities/Turtle_Art">turtleart</a>,
 672 it allow for visual programming where syntax errors can not happen,
 673 and a friendly programming environment for learning to control the
 674 computer.  Scratch will also be included in the next release of Debian
 675 Edu.</a>

 677 <p>And now that Wheezy is wrapped up, we can wrap up the next Debian
 678 Edu/Skolelinux release too.  The
 679 <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/2013/04/msg00132.html">first

 712 <p>Gjøre det enklere å finne en tannlege som er praktisk for deg, der
 713 pris og reisetid med kollektivt, til fots eller med bil er tatt med i
 714 beregningen, ved å oppgi hvor en bor og jobber, og få forslag til
 715 tannleger både i nærheten og på veien mellom disse stedene.</p>

 717 <p>Brukeren oppgir hjemmeadresse og jobbadresse, og kanskje også
 718 barnehage. Så kan en også oppgi egen timelønn (for å beregne taps
 719 arbeidsfortjeneste) og om en reiser med kollektivt, til fots eller
 720 kjører bil. Så trykker en søk, og får opp en todelt side med kart og
 721 tekstliste. I kartdelen vises aktuelle tannleger (for eksempel maks
 722 7), og i tekstdelen er de samme tannlegene listet opp, med pris og
 723 reisetid for kollektivtransport, og pris pluss reisekostnad hvis en
 724 reiser med bil. En kan endre sorteringsrekkefølge for listen ved å
 725 trykke på aktuell kolonne, og velge om en skal sortere på pris,
 726 reisetid eller totalkostnad. Kun tannleger som tar imot nye kunder tas
 727 i utganspunktet med i listen. Når brukeren trykker med musa en
 728 tannlegemarkør på kartet kommer det en popup med detaljer om
 729 tannlegen, den samme informasjonen som finnes i listen under kartet,
 730 og lenke til mer informasjon om tannlegen.</p>

 733 informasjonsside med adresse, hjemmesideurl, telefonnummer, lenke til
