179 involved is Bernd Zeitzen, who show up on the project mailing lists

</p

183 <p

185 <p
>My name is Bernd Zeitzen and I
'm married with Hedda, a self
186 employed physiotherapist. My former profession is tool maker, but I
187 haven
't worked for
30 years in this job.
30 years ago I started to
188 support my wife and become her officeworker and a few years later the
189 administrator for a small computer network, today based on Ubuntu
190 Server (Samba, OpenVPN). For her daily work she has to use Windows
191 Desktops because the software she needs to organize her business only
192 works with Windows . :-(
</p
>
194 <p
>In
1988 we started with one PC and DOS, then I learned to use
195 Windows
98,
2000, XP, …,
8, Ubuntu, MacOSX. Today we are running a
196 Linux server with
6 Windows clients and
10 persons (teacher of
197 children with special needs, speech therapist, occupational therapist,
198 psychologist and officeworkers) using our Samba shares via OpenVPN to
199 work with the documentations of our patients.
</p
>
201 <p
><strong
>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
202 project?
</strong
></p
>
204 <p
>Two years ago a friend of mine asked me, if I want to get a job in
205 his school (
<a href=
"http://www.gymnasium-harsewinkel.de/
">Gymnasium
206 Harsewinkel
</a
>). They started with Skolelinux / Debian Edu and they
207 were looking for people to give support to the teachers using the
208 software and the network and teaching the pupils increasing their
209 computer skills in optional lessons. I
'm spending
4-
6 hours a week
210 with this job.
</p
>
212 <p
><strong
>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
213 Edu?
</strong
></p
>
215 <p
>The independence.
</p
>
217 <p
>First: Every person is allowed to use, share and develop the
218 software. Even if you are poor, you are allowed to use the software
219 included in Skolelinux/Debian Edu and all the other Free Software.
</p
>
221 <p
>Second: The software runs on old machines and this gives us the
222 possibility to recycle computers, weeded out from offices. The
223 servers and desktops are running for more than two years and they are
224 working reliable.
</p
>
226 <p
>We have two servers (one tjener and one terminal server),
45
227 workstations in three classrooms and seven laptops as a mobile
228 solution for all classrooms. These machines are all booting from the
229 terminal server. In the moment we are installing
30 laptops as mobile
230 workstations. Then the pupils have the possibility to work with these
231 machines in their classrooms. Internet access is realized by a WLAN
232 router, connected to the schools network. This is all done without a
233 dedicated system administrator or a computer science teacher.
</p
>
235 <p
><strong
>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
236 Edu?
</strong

>
238 <p
>Teachers and pupils are Windows users.
&lt;Irony on
&gt; And Linux
239 isn
't cool. It
's software for freaks using the command line.
&lt;Irony
240 off
&gt; They don
't realize the stability of the system.
</p
>
242 <p
><strong
>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong

>
244 <p
>Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Ubuntu Server
12.04 (Samba,
245 Apache, MySQL, Joomla!, … and Skolelinux / Debian Edu)
</p
>
247 <p
><strong
>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
248 get schools to use free software?
</strong
></p
>
250 <p
>In Germany we have the situation: every school is free to decide
251 which software they want to use. This decision is influenced by
252 teachers who learned to use Windows and MS Office. They buy a PC with
253 Windows preinstalled and an additional testing version of MS
254 Office. They don
't know about the possibility to use Free Software
255 instead. Another problem are the publisher of school books. They
256 develop their software, added to the school books, for Windows.

">Debian
320 wiki
</a
>, as several wiki pages written in English. It consist of one
321 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
322 for each chapter, and finally one
"collection page
" gluing all the
323 chapters together into one large web page (aka
324 <a href=
"https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne
">the
325 AllInOne page
</a
>). The AllInOne page is the one used for further
326 processing and translations. Thanks to the fact that the
327 <a href=
"http://moinmo.in/
">MoinMoin
</a
> installation on
328 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
329 <a href=
"http://www.docbook.org/
">the Docbook format
</a
>, we can fetch
330 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
331 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
332 manual. This process also download images and transform image
333 references to use the locally downloaded images. The generated
334 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
335 using the
<tt
>documentation/scripts/get_manual
</tt
> program, and the
336 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
337 a handfull of images. The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
338 and epub versions of the English manual. This is the basic step of
339 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
340 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
341 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.
</p
>
343 <p
>But English documentation is not enough for us. We want translated
344 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
345 track the English original. For this we use the
346 <a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html
">poxml
</a
> package,
347 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
348 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
349 translation tools used by those translating free software. The pot
350 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
351 files), which the translations update with the native language
352 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
353 original. The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
354 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
355 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
356 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml). This translated (or partly
357 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
358 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
359 of the documentation.
</p
>
361 <p
>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files. We
363 <a href=
"http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/
">lokalize
</a
>,
364 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
365 <a href=
"http://pootle.translatehouse.org/
">Poodle
</a
> or
366 <a href=
"https://www.transifex.com/
">Transifex
</a
>. All we care about
367 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository. Updated
368 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
369 <a href=
"https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc
">bug reports
370 against the debian-edu-doc package
</a
>.
</p
>
372 <p
>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
373 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
374 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
375 this regard). For this we transform the original PNG images to the
376 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
377 translated images by storing translated versions in
378 images/$LANGUAGECODE/. I am a bit unsure about the details here. The
379 package maintainers know more.
</p
>
381 <p

382 <a href=

383 of the documentation packages on the web

've been following
<a href=

513 implementation of Adobe Flash, both a standalone player and a browser
514 plugin. Gnash implement support for the AVM1 format (and not the
515 newer AVM2 format - see
516 <a href=

</a

517 allowing several flash based sites to work. Thanks to the friendly
518 developers at Youtube, it also work with Youtube videos, because the
519 Javascript code at Youtube detect Gnash and serve a AVM1 player to
520 those users. :) Would be great if someone found time to implement AVM2
521 support, but it has not happened yet. If you install both Lightspark
522 and Gnash, Lightspark will invoke Gnash if it find a AVM1 flash file,
523 so you can get both handled as free software. Unfortunately,
524 Lightspark so far only implement a small subset of AVM2, and many
525 sites do not work yet.

>A few months ago, I started looking at
528 <a href=

529 checker used to find heaps and heaps of bugs in free software (thanks
530 to the donation of a scanning service to free software projects by the
531 company developing this non-free code checker), and Gnash was one of
532 the projects I decided to check out. Coverity is able to find lock
533 errors, memory errors, dead code and more. A few days ago they even
534 extended it to also be able to find the heartbleed bug in OpenSSL.
535 There are heaps of checks being done on the instrumented code, and the
536 amount of bogus warnings is quite low compared to the other static
537 code checkers I have tested over the years.
</p

539 <p
>Since a few weeks ago, I
've been working with the other Gnash
540 developers squashing bugs discovered by Coverity. I was quite happy
541 today when I checked the current status and saw that of the
777 issues
542 detected so far,
374 are marked as fixed. This make me confident that
543 the next Gnash release will be more stable and more dependable than
544 the previous one. Most of the reported issues were and are in the
545 test suite, but it also found a few in the rest of the code.

560 <description><p
>It would be nice if it was easier in Debian to get all the hardware
561 related packages relevant for the computer installed automatically.
562 So I implemented one, using
563 <a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/isenkram
">my Isenkram
564 package
</a
>. To use it, install the tasksel and isenkram packages and
565 run tasksel as user root. You should be presented with a new option,
566 "Hardware specific packages (autodetected by isenkram)
". When you
567 select it, tasksel will install the packages isenkram claim is fit for
568 the current hardware, hot pluggable or not.
<p
>
570 <p
>The implementation is in two files, one is the tasksel menu entry
571 description, and the other is the script used to extract the list of
572 packages to install. The first part is in
573 <tt
>/usr/share/tasksel/descs/isenkram.desc
</tt
> and look like
576 <p

><pre

579 Description: Hardware specific packages (autodetected by isenkram)

591 <p
><blockquote
><pre
>
596 isenkram-autoinstall-firmware -l
598 </pre
></blockquote
></p
>
600 <p
>All in all, a very short and simple implementation making it
601 trivial to install the hardware dependent package we all may want to
602 have installed on our machines. I
've not been able to find a way to
603 get tasksel to tell you exactly which packages it plan to install
604 before doing the installation. So if you are curious or careful,
605 check the output from the isenkram-* command line tools first.
</p
>
607 <p
>The information about which packages are handling which hardware is
608 fetched either from the isenkram package itself in
609 /usr/share/isenkram/, from git.debian.org or from the APT package
610 database (using the Modaliases header). The APT package database
611 parsing have caused a nasty resource leak in the isenkram daemon (bugs
612 <a href=
"http://bugs.debian.org/
719837">#
719837</a
> and
613 <a href=
"http://bugs.debian.org/
730704">#
730704</a
>). The cause is in
614 the python-apt code (bug
615 <a href=
"http://bugs.debian.org/
745487">#
745487</a
>), but using a
616 workaround I was able to get rid of the file descriptor leak and
617 reduce the memory leak from ~
30 MiB per hardware detection down to
618 around
2 MiB per hardware detection. It should make the desktop
619 daemon a lot more useful. The fix is in version
0.7 uploaded to
620 unstable today.
</p
>
622 <p
>I believe the current way of mapping hardware to packages in
623 Isenkram is is a good draft, but in the future I expect isenkram to
624 use the AppStream data source for this. A proposal for getting proper
625 AppStream support into Debian is floating around as
626 <a href=
"https://wiki.debian.org/DEP-

628 project
</a
> will take place this summer to improve the situation. I
629 look forward to seeing the result, and welcome patches for isenkram to
630 start using the information when it is ready.
</p
>
632 <p
>If you want your package to map to some specific hardware, either
633 add a
"Xb-Modaliases
" header to your control file like I did in
634 <a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/pymissile

638 blog posts tagged isenkram

639 the information will be migrated to AppStream eventually, but for the
640 moment I got no better place to store it.

694 virtualbox specific. It create a x86 image usable in kvm, qemu,
695 vmware and any other x86 virtual machine environment. You might need
696 the version of vmdebootstrap in Jessie to get the build working, as it
697 include fixes for a race condition with kpartx.

>If you wonder how to help, one task you could look at is using
711 systemd as the boot system. It will become the default for Linux in
712 Jessie, so we need to make sure it is usable on the Freedombox. I did
713 a simple test a few weeks ago, and noticed dnsmasq failed to start
714 during boot when using systemd. I suspect there are other problems
715 too. :) To detect problems, there is a test suite included, which can
716 be run from the plinth web interface.

>For
12 år siden, skrev jeg et lite notat om
733 <a href=
"http://i18n.skolelinux.no/localekoder.txt
">bruk av språkkoder
734 i Norge
</a

For språk i Norge anbefales følgende språkkoder (anbefalt
740 locale i parantes):
</p
>
743 <dt
>nb (nb_NO)
</dt
><dd
>Bokmål i Norge
</dd
>
744 <dt
>nn (nn_NO)
</dt
><dd
>Nynorsk i Norge
</dd
>
745 <dt
>se (se_NO)
</dt
><dd
>Nordsamisk i Norge
</dd
>
746 </dl
></p
>
748 <p
>Alle programmer som bruker andre koder bør endres.
</p
>
750 <p
>Språkkoden bør brukes når .po-filer navngis og installeres. Dette
751 er ikke det samme som locale-koden. For Norsk Bokmål, så bør filene
752 være navngitt nb.po, mens locale (LANG) bør være nb_NO.
</p
>
754 <p
>Hvis vi ikke får standardisert de kodene i alle programmene med
755 norske oversettelser, så er det umulig å gi LANG-variablen ett innhold
756 som fungerer for alle programmer.
</p
>
758 <p
>Språkkodene er de offisielle kodene fra ISO
639, og bruken av dem i
759 forbindelse med POSIX localer er standardisert i RFC
3066 og ISO
760 15897. Denne anbefalingen er i tråd med de angitte standardene.
</p
>
762 <p
>Følgende koder er eller har vært i bruk som locale-verdier for
763 "norske
" språk. Disse bør unngås, og erstattes når de oppdages:
