195 Skolelinux</a>, is used quite a lot in Germany, and one of the people
196 involved is Bernd Zeitzen, who show up on the project mailing lists
197 from time to time with interesting questions and tips on how to adjust
198 the setup. I managed to interview him this summer.</p>

200 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?</strong></p>

202 <p>My name is Bernd Zeitzen and I'm married with Hedda, a self
203 employed physiotherapist. My former profession is tool maker, but I
204 haven't worked for 30 years in this job. 30 years ago I started to
205 support my wife and become her officeworker and a few years later the
206 administrator for a small computer network, today based on Ubuntu
207 Server (Samba, OpenVPN). For her daily work she has to use Windows
208 Desktops because the software she needs to organize her business only
209 works with Windows . :-(</p>

211 <p>In 1988 we started with one PC and DOS, then I learned to use
212 Windows 98, 2000, XP, …, 8, Ubuntu, MacOSX. Today we are running a
213 Linux server with 6 Windows clients and 10 persons (teacher of
214 children with special needs, speech therapist, occupational therapist,
215 psychologist and officeworkers) using our Samba shares via OpenVPN to
216 work with the documentations of our patients.</p>

218 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
219 project?</strong></p>

221 <p>Two years ago a friend of mine asked me, if I want to get a job in
222 his school (<a href="http://www.gymnasium-harsewinkel.de/">Gymnasium
223 Harsewinkel</a>). They started with Skolelinux / Debian Edu and they
224 were looking for people to give support to the teachers using the
225 software and the network and teaching the pupils increasing their
226 computer skills in optional lessons. I'm spending 4-6 hours a week
227 with this job.</p>

229 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
230 Edu?</strong></p>

232 <p>The independence.</p>

234 <p>First: Every person is allowed to use, share and develop the
235 software. Even if you are poor, you are allowed to use the software
236 included in Skolelinux/Debian Edu and all the other Free Software.</p>

238 <p>Second: The software runs on old machines and this gives us the
239 possibility to recycle computers, weeded out from offices. The
240 servers and desktops are running for more than two years and they are
241 working reliable. </p>

243 <p>We have two servers (one tjener and one terminal server), 45
244 workstations in three classrooms and seven laptops as a mobile
245 solution for all classrooms. These machines are all booting from the
246 terminal server. In the moment we are installing 30 laptops as mobile
247 workstations. Then the pupils have the possibility to work with these
248 machines in their classrooms. Internet access is realized by a WLAN
249 router, connected to the schools network. This is all done without a
250 dedicated system administrator or a computer science teacher.</p>

252 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian

271 Office. They don't know about the possibility to use Free Software
272 instead. Another problem are the publisher of school books. They
273 develop their software, added to the school books, for Windows.</p>

291 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with todays copyright
292 law. Yesterday, I finally completed translated the book text. There
293 are still some foot/end notes left to translate, the colophon page
294 need to be rewritten, and a few words and phrases still need to be
295 translated, but the Norwegian text is ready for the first proof
296 reading. :) More spell checking is needed, and several illustrations
297 need to be cleaned up. The work stopped up because I had to give
298 priority to other projects the last year, and the progress graph of
299 the translation show this very well:</p>

328 <div class="body"><p>The <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu / Skolelinux
329 project</a> provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
330 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
331 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation. This text is about how the
332 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.</p>
333
334 <p>One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
335 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
336 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
337 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
338 in sync. And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
339 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
340 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
341 edit the documentation using a web browser. We also want it to be
342 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
343 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
344 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
345 goals.</p>

347 <p>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
348 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/">Debian
349 wiki</a>, as several wiki pages written in English. It consist of one
350 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
351 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
352 chapters together into one large web page (aka
353 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne">the
354 AllInOne page</a>). The AllInOne page is the one used for further
355 processing and translations. Thanks to the fact that the
356 <a href="http://moinmo.in/">MoinMoin</a> installation on
357 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
358 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">the Docbook format</a>, we can fetch
359 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
360 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
361 manual. This process also download images and transform image
362 references to use the locally downloaded images. The generated
363 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
364 using the <tt>documentation/scripts/get_manual</tt> program, and the
365 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
366 a handfull of images. The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
367 and epub versions of the English manual. This is the basic step of
368 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
369 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
370 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.</p>

372 <p>But English documentation is not enough for us. We want translated
373 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
374 track the English original. For this we use the
375 <a href="http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html">poxml</a> package,
376 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
377 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
378 translation tools used by those translating free software. The pot
379 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
380 files), which the translations update with the native language
381 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
382 original. The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
383 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
384 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
385 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml). This translated (or partly
386 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
387 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
388 of the documentation.</p>

390 <p>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files. We
391 recommend using
392 <a href="http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/">lokalize</a>,
393 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
394 <a href="http://pootle.translatehouse.org/">Poodle</a> or
395 <a href="https://www.transifex.com/">Transifex</a>. All we care about
396 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository. Updated
397 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
398 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc">bug reports
399 against the debian-edu-doc package</a>.</p>

401 <p>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
402 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
403 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
404 this regard). For this we transform the original PNG images to the
405 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
406 translated images by storing translated versions in
407 images/$LANGUAGECODE/. I am a bit unsure about the details here. The
408 package maintainers know more.</p>

558 <div class="body"><p>I've been following <a href="http://www.getgnash.org/">the Gnash
559 project</a> for quite a while now. It is a free software
560 implementation of Adobe Flash, both a standalone player and a browser
561 plugin. Gnash implement support for the AVM1 format (and not the
562 newer AVM2 format - see
563 <a href="http://lightspark.github.io/">Lightspark</a> for that one),
564 allowing several flash based sites to work. Thanks to the friendly
565 developers at Youtube, it also work with Youtube videos, because the
566 Javascript code at Youtube detect Gnash and serve a AVM1 player to
567 those users. :) Would be great if someone found time to implement AVM2
568 support, but it has not happened yet. If you install both Lightspark
569 and Gnash, Lightspark will invoke Gnash if it find a AVM1 flash file,
570 so you can get both handled as free software. Unfortunately,
571 Lightspark so far only implement a small subset of AVM2, and many
572 sites do not work yet.</p>

574 <p>A few months ago, I started looking at
575 <a href="http://scan.coverity.com/">Coverity</a>, the static source
576 checker used to find heaps and heaps of bugs in free software (thanks
577 to the donation of a scanning service to free software projects by the
578 company developing this non-free code checker), and Gnash was one of
579 the projects I decided to check out. Coverity is able to find lock
580 errors, memory errors, dead code and more. A few days ago they even
581 extended it to also be able to find the heartbleed bug in OpenSSL.
582 There are heaps of checks being done on the instrumented code, and the
583 amount of bogus warnings is quite low compared to the other static
584 code checkers I have tested over the years.</p>

586 <p>Since a few weeks ago, I've been working with the other Gnash
587 developers squashing bugs discovered by Coverity. I was quite happy
588 today when I checked the current status and saw that of the 777 issues
589 detected so far, 374 are marked as fixed. This make me confident that
590 the next Gnash release will be more stable and more dependable than
591 the previous one. Most of the reported issues were and are in the
592 test suite, but it also found a few in the rest of the code.</p>

618 run tasksel as user root. You should be presented with a new option,
619 "Hardware specific packages (autodetected by isenkram)". When you

621 the current hardware, hot pluggable or not.<p>

654 trivial to install the hardware dependent package we all may want to
655 have installed on our machines. I've not been able to find a way to
656 get tasksel to tell you exactly which packages it plan to install
657 before doing the installation. So if you are curious or careful,
658 check the output from the isenkram-* command line tools first.</p>

660 <p>The information about which packages are handling which hardware is
661 fetched either from the isenkram package itself in
662 /usr/share/isenkram/, from git.debian.org or from the APT package
663 database (using the Modaliases header). The APT package database
664 parsing have caused a nasty resource leak in the isenkram daemon (bugs
665 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/719837">#719837</a> and
666 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/730704">#730704</a>). The cause is in
667 the python-apt code (bug
668 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/745487">#745487</a>), but using a
669 workaround I was able to get rid of the file descriptor leak and
670 reduce the memory leak from ~30 MiB per hardware detection down to
671 around 2 MiB per hardware detection. It should make the desktop
672 daemon a lot more useful. The fix is in version 0.7 uploaded to
673 unstable today.</p>

675 <p>I believe the current way of mapping hardware to packages in
676 Isenkram is is a good draft, but in the future I expect isenkram to
677 use the AppStream data source for this. A proposal for getting proper
678 AppStream support into Debian is floating around as
679 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DEP-11">DEP-11</a>, and
680 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2014/Projects#SummerOfCode2014.2FProjects.2FAppStreamDEP11Implementation.AppStream.2FDEP-11_for_the_Debian_Archive">GSoC
681 project</a> will take place this summer to improve the situation. I
682 look forward to seeing the result, and welcome patches for isenkram to
683 start using the information when it is ready.</p>
