25 <div class="body"><p>The <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu / Skolelinux
26 project</a> provide a Linux solution for schools, including a
27 powerful desktop with education software, a central server providing
28 web pages, user database, user home directories, central login and PXE
29 boot of both clients without disk and the installation to install Debian
30 Edu on machines with disk (and a few other services perhaps to small
31 to mention here). We in the Debian Edu team are currently working on
32 the Jessie based version, trying to get everything in shape before the
33 freeze, to avoid having to maintain our own package repository in the
34 future. The
35 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Status/Jessie">current
36 status</a> can be seen on the Debian wiki, and there is still heaps of
37 work left. Some fatal problems block testing, breaking the installer,
38 but it is possible to work around these to get anyway. Here is a
39 recipe on how to get the installation limping along.</p>

41 <p>First, download the test ISO via
42 <a href="ftp://ftp.skolelinux.no/cd-edu-testing-nolocal-netinst/debian-edu-amd64-i386-NETINST-1.iso">ftp</a>,

46 The ISO build was broken on Tuesday, so we do not get a new ISO every
47 12 hours or so, but thankfully the ISO we already got we are able to
48 install with some tweaking.</p>

50 <p>When you get to the Debian Edu profile question, go to tty2
51 (use Alt-Ctrl-F2), run</p>

67 <p>If you installed a profile including a graphical desktop, log in as
68 root after the initial boot from hard drive, and install the
69 education-desktop-XXX metapackage. XXX can be kde, gnome, lxde, xfce
70 or mate. If you want several desktop options, install more than one
71 metapackage. Once this is done, reboot and you should have a working
72 graphical login screen. This workaround should no longer be needed
73 once the education-tasks package version 1.801 enter testing in two
74 days.</p>

76 <p>I believe the ISO build will start working on two days when the new
77 tasksel package enter testing and Steve McIntyre get a chance to
78 update the debian-cd git repository. The eatmydata, grub and desktop
79 issues are already fixed in unstable and testing, and should show up
80 on the ISO as soon as the ISO build start working again. Well the
81 eatmydata optimization is really just disabled. The proper fix
82 require an upload by the eatmydata maintainer applying the patch
83 provided in bug <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/702711">#702711</a>.
84 The rest have proper fixes in unstable.</p>

103 <div class="body"><p>I use the <a href="https://sourceforge.net/p/lsdvd/">lsdvd tool</a>
104 to handle my fairly large DVD collection. It is a nice command line
105 tool to get details about a DVD, like title, tracks, track length,
106 etc, in XML, Perl or human readable format. But lsdvd have not seen
107 any new development since 2006 and had a few irritating bugs affecting
108 its use with some DVDs. Upstream seemed to be dead, and in January I
109 sent a small probe asking for a version control repository for the
110 project, without any reply. But I use it regularly and would like to
111 get <a href="https://packages.qa.debian.org/lsdvd">an updated version
112 into Debian</a>. So two weeks ago I tried harder to get in touch with
113 the project admin, and after getting a reply from him explaining that
114 he was no longer interested in the project, I asked if I could take
115 over. And yesterday, I became project admin.</p>

117 <p>I've been in touch with a Gentoo developer and the Debian
118 maintainer interested in joining forces to maintain the upstream
119 project, and I hope we can get a new release out fairly quickly,
120 collecting the patches spread around on the internet into on place.
121 I've added the relevant Debian patches to the freshly created git
122 repository, and expect the Gentoo patches to make it too. If you got

142 veiene som jeg har lurt på hva gjør. De har ut fra plassering og
143 vinkling sett ut som bokser som sniffer ut et eller annet fra
144 forbipasserende trafikk, men det har vært uklart for meg hva det er de
145 leser av. Her om dagen tok jeg bilde av en slik boks som henger under

158 av Statens Vegvesen, så antok jeg at det burde være mulig å bruke

169 URL-koding av aktuelle strenger kunne gjøres mer generisk, og brukte

369 for de som kontrollerer boksene å holde rede på hvor en gitt bil er
370 når den passerte et slikt målepunkt. NRK-artikkelen forteller at
371 denne informasjonen i dag kun brukes til å koble to
372 AutoPASS-brikkepasseringer passeringer sammen for å beregne
373 reisetiden, og at bruken er godkjent av Datatilsynet. Det er desverre
374 ikke mulig for en sjåfør som passerer under en slik boks å kontrollere
375 at AutoPASS-ID-en kun brukes til dette i dag og i fremtiden.</p>

377 <p>I tillegg til denne type AutoPASS-sniffere vet jeg at det også
378 finnes mange automatiske stasjoner som tar betalt pr. passering (aka
379 bomstasjoner), og der lagres informasjon om tid, sted og bilnummer i
380 10 år. Finnes det andre slike sniffere plassert ut på veiene?</p>

382 <p>Personlig har jeg valgt å ikke bruke AutoPASS-brikke, for å gjøre
383 det vanskeligere og mer kostbart for de som vil invadere privatsfæren
384 og holde rede på hvor bilen min beveger seg til enhver tid. Jeg håper
385 flere vil gjøre det samme, selv om det gir litt høyere private
386 utgifter (dyrere bompassering). Vern om privatsfæren koster i disse
387 dager.</p>

405 <div class="body"><p>The <a href="https://www.debian.org/">Debian</a> installer could be
406 a lot quicker. When we install more than 2000 packages in
407 <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Skolelinux / Debian Edu</a> using
408 tasksel in the installer, unpacking the binary packages take forever.
409 A part of the slow I/O issue was discussed in
410 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/613428">bug #613428</a> about too
411 much file system sync-ing done by dpkg, which is the package
412 responsible for unpacking the binary packages. Other parts (like code
413 executed by postinst scripts) might also sync to disk during
414 installation. All this sync-ing to disk do not really make sense to
415 me. If the machine crash half-way through, I start over, I do not try
416 to salvage the half installed system. So the failure sync-ing is
417 supposed to protect against, hardware or system crash, is not really
418 relevant while the installer is running.</p>

420 <p>A few days ago, I thought of a way to get rid of all the file
421 system sync()-ing in a fairly non-intrusive way, without the need to
422 change the code in several packages. The idea is not new, but I have
423 not heard anyone propose the approach using dpkg-divert before. It
424 depend on the small and clever package
425 <a href="https://packages.qa.debian.org/eatmydata">eatmydata</a>, which
426 uses LD_PRELOAD to replace the system functions for syncing data to
427 disk with functions doing nothing, thus allowing programs to live
428 dangerous while speeding up disk I/O significantly. Instead of
429 modifying the implementation of dpkg, apt and tasksel (which are the
430 packages responsible for selecting, fetching and installing packages),
431 it occurred to me that we could just divert the programs away, replace
432 them with a simple shell wrapper calling
433 "eatmydata&nbsp;$program&nbsp;$@", to get the same effect.
434 Two days ago I decided to test the idea, and wrapped up a simple
435 implementation for the Debian Edu udeb.</p>

437 <p>The effect was stunning. In my first test it reduced the running
438 time of the pkgsel step (installing tasks) from 64 to less than 44
439 minutes (20 minutes shaved off the installation) on an old Dell
440 Latitude D505 machine. I am not quite sure what the optimised time
441 would have been, as I messed up the testing a bit, causing the debconf
442 priority to get low enough for two questions to pop up during
443 installation. As soon as I saw the questions I moved the installation
444 along, but do not know how long the question were holding up the
445 installation. I did some more measurements using Debian Edu Jessie,
446 and got these results. The time measured is the time stamp in
447 /var/log/syslog between the "pkgsel: starting tasksel" and the
448 "pkgsel: finishing up" lines, if you want to do the same measurement
449 yourself. In Debian Edu, the tasksel dialog do not show up, and the
450 timing thus do not depend on how quickly the user handle the tasksel
451 dialog.</p>

499 <p>The test is done using a netinst ISO on a USB stick, so some of the
500 time is spent downloading packages. The connection to the Internet
501 was 100Mbit/s during testing, so downloading should not be a
502 significant factor in the measurement. Download typically took a few
503 seconds to a few minutes, depending on the amount of packages being
504 installed.</p>

506 <p>The speedup is implemented by using two hooks in
507 <a href="https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/">Debian
508 Installer</a>, the pre-pkgsel.d hook to set up the diverts, and the
509 finish-install.d hook to remove the divert at the end of the

972 involved is Bernd Zeitzen, who show up on the project mailing lists

974 the setup. I managed to interview him this summer.</p>

976 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?</strong></p>

978 <p>My name is Bernd Zeitzen and I'm married with Hedda, a self
979 employed physiotherapist. My former profession is tool maker, but I
980 haven't worked for 30 years in this job. 30 years ago I started to
981 support my wife and become her officeworker and a few years later the
982 administrator for a small computer network, today based on Ubuntu
983 Server (Samba, OpenVPN). For her daily work she has to use Windows
984 Desktops because the software she needs to organize her business only
985 works with Windows . :-(</p>

987 <p>In 1988 we started with one PC and DOS, then I learned to use
988 Windows 98, 2000, XP, …, 8, Ubuntu, MacOSX. Today we are running a
989 Linux server with 6 Windows clients and 10 persons (teacher of
990 children with special needs, speech therapist, occupational therapist,
991 psychologist and officeworkers) using our Samba shares via OpenVPN to
992 work with the documentations of our patients.</p>

994 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
995 project?</strong></p>

997 <p>Two years ago a friend of mine asked me, if I want to get a job in
998 his school (<a href="http://www.gymnasium-harsewinkel.de/">Gymnasium
999 Harsewinkel</a>). They started with Skolelinux / Debian Edu and they
1000 were looking for people to give support to the teachers using the
1001 software and the network and teaching the pupils increasing their
1002 computer skills in optional lessons. I'm spending 4-6 hours a week
1003 with this job.</p>

1005 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
1006 Edu?</strong></p>

1008 <p>The independence.</p>

1010 <p>First: Every person is allowed to use, share and develop the
1011 software. Even if you are poor, you are allowed to use the software
1012 included in Skolelinux/Debian Edu and all the other Free Software.</p>

1014 <p>Second: The software runs on old machines and this gives us the
1015 possibility to recycle computers, weeded out from offices. The
1016 servers and desktops are running for more than two years and they are
1017 working reliable. </p>

1019 <p>We have two servers (one tjener and one terminal server), 45
1020 workstations in three classrooms and seven laptops as a mobile
1021 solution for all classrooms. These machines are all booting from the
1022 terminal server. In the moment we are installing 30 laptops as mobile
1023 workstations. Then the pupils have the possibility to work with these
1024 machines in their classrooms. Internet access is realized by a WLAN
1025 router, connected to the schools network. This is all done without a
1026 dedicated system administrator or a computer science teacher.</p>

1028 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
1029 Edu?</strong></p>

1031 <p>Teachers and pupils are Windows users. &lt;Irony on&gt; And Linux
1032 isn't cool. It's software for freaks using the command line. &lt;Irony
1033 off&gt; They don't realize the stability of the system. </p>

1044 which software they want to use. This decision is influenced by
1045 teachers who learned to use Windows and MS Office. They buy a PC with
1046 Windows preinstalled and an additional testing version of MS
1047 Office. They don't know about the possibility to use Free Software
1048 instead. Another problem are the publisher of school books. They
1049 develop their software, added to the school books, for Windows.</p>

1065 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> version of the 2004 book
1066 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> by Lawrence Lessig,
1067 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with todays copyright
1068 law. Yesterday, I finally completed translated the book text. There
1069 are still some foot/end notes left to translate, the colophon page
1070 need to be rewritten, and a few words and phrases still need to be
1071 translated, but the Norwegian text is ready for the first proof
1072 reading. :) More spell checking is needed, and several illustrations
1073 need to be cleaned up. The work stopped up because I had to give
1074 priority to other projects the last year, and the progress graph of
1075 the translation show this very well:</p>

1104 <div class="body"><p>The <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu / Skolelinux
1105 project</a> provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
1106 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
1107 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation. This text is about how the
1108 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.</p>
1109
1110 <p>One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
1111 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
1112 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
1113 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
1114 in sync. And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
1115 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
1116 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
1117 edit the documentation using a web browser. We also want it to be
1118 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
1119 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
1120 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
1121 goals.</p>

1123 <p>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
1124 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/">Debian
1125 wiki</a>, as several wiki pages written in English. It consist of one
1126 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
1127 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
1128 chapters together into one large web page (aka
1129 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne">the
1130 AllInOne page</a>). The AllInOne page is the one used for further
1131 processing and translations. Thanks to the fact that the
1132 <a href="http://moinmo.in/">MoinMoin</a> installation on
1133 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
1134 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">the Docbook format</a>, we can fetch
1135 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
1136 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
1137 manual. This process also download images and transform image
1138 references to use the locally downloaded images. The generated
1139 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
1140 using the <tt>documentation/scripts/get_manual</tt> program, and the
1141 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
1142 a handfull of images. The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
1143 and epub versions of the English manual. This is the basic step of
1144 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
1145 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
1146 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.</p>

1148 <p>But English documentation is not enough for us. We want translated
1149 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
1150 track the English original. For this we use the
1151 <a href="http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html">poxml</a> package,
1152 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
1153 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
1154 translation tools used by those translating free software. The pot
1155 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
1156 files), which the translations update with the native language
1157 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
1158 original. The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
1159 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
1160 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
1161 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml). This translated (or partly
1162 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
1163 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
1164 of the documentation.</p>

1166 <p>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files. We
1167 recommend using
1168 <a href="http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/">lokalize</a>,
1169 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
1170 <a href="http://pootle.translatehouse.org/">Poodle</a> or
1171 <a href="https://www.transifex.com/">Transifex</a>. All we care about
1172 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository. Updated
1173 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
1174 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc">bug reports
1175 against the debian-edu-doc package</a>.</p>

1177 <p>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
1178 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
1179 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
1180 this regard). For this we transform the original PNG images to the
1181 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
1182 translated images by storing translated versions in
1183 images/$LANGUAGECODE/. I am a bit unsure about the details here. The
1184 package maintainers know more.</p>
