"body"><p>While looking at
26 <a href=
"http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/cce/">the scanned copies
27 for the copyright renewal entries for movies published in the USA
</a>,
28 an idea occurred to me. The number of renewals are so few per year, it
29 should be fairly quick to transcribe them all and add references to
30 the corresponding IMDB title ID. This would give the (presumably)
31 complete list of movies published
28 years earlier that did _not_
32 enter the public domain for the transcribed year. By fetching the
33 list of USA movies published
28 years earlier and subtract the movies
34 with renewals, we should be left with movies registered in IMDB that
35 are now in the public domain. For the year
1955 (which is the one I
36 have looked at the most), the total number of pages to transcribe is
37 21. For the
28 years from
1950 to
1978, it should be in the range
38 500-
600 pages. It is just a few days of work, and spread among a
39 small group of people it should be doable in a few weeks of spare
42 <p>A typical copyright renewal entry look like this (the first one
46 ADAM AND EVIL, a photoplay in seven reels by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
47 Distribution Corp. (c)
17Aug27; L24293. Loew's Incorporated (PWH);
51 <p>The movie title as well as registration and renewal dates are easy
52 enough to locate by a program (split on first comma and look for
53 DDmmmYY). The rest of the text is not required to find the movie in
54 IMDB, but is useful to confirm the correct movie is found. I am not
55 quite sure what the L and R numbers mean, but suspect they are
56 reference numbers into the archive of the US Copyright Office.
</p>
58 <p>Tracking down the equivalent IMDB title ID is probably going to be
59 a manual task, but given the year it is fairly easy to search for the
60 movie title using for example
61 <a href=
"http://www.imdb.com/find?q=adam+and+evil+1927&s=all">http://www.imdb.com/find?q=adam+and+evil+
1927&s=all
</a>.
62 Using this search, I find that the equivalent IMDB title ID for the
63 first renewal entry from
1955 is
64 <a href=
"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017588/">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017588/
</a>.
</p>
66 <p>I suspect the best way to do this would be to make a specialised
67 web service to make it easy for contributors to transcribe and track
68 down IMDB title IDs. In the web service, once a entry is transcribed,
69 the title and year could be extracted from the text, a search in IMDB
70 conducted for the user to pick the equivalent IMDB title ID right
71 away. By spreading out the work among volunteers, it would also be
72 possible to make at least two persons transcribe the same entries to
73 be able to discover any typos introduced. But I will need help to
74 make this happen, as I lack the spare time to do all of this on my
75 own. If you would like to help, please get in touch. Perhaps you can
76 draft a web service for crowd sourcing the task?
</p>
78 <p>Note, Project Gutenberg already have some
79 <a href=
"http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/search/?query=copyright+office+renewals">transcribed
80 copies of the US Copyright Office renewal protocols
</a>, but I have
81 not been able to find any film renewals there, so I suspect they only
82 have copies of renewal for written works. I have not been able to find
83 any transcribed versions of movie renewals so far. Perhaps they exist
86 <p>I would love to figure out methods for finding all the public
87 domain works in other countries too, but it is a lot harder. At least
88 for Norway and Great Britain, such work involve tracking down the
89 people involved in making the movie and figuring out when they died.
90 It is hard enough to figure out who was part of making a movie, but I
91 do not know how to automate such procedure without a registry of every
92 person involved in making movies and their death year.

1927 (sources disagree), and presumably
124 registered its copyright that year. At that time, right holders of
125 movies registered by the copyright office received government

161 <div class=
"body"><p>It would be easier to locate the movie you want to watch in
162 <a href=
"https://www.archive.org/">the Internet Archive
</a>, if the
163 metadata about each movie was more complete and accurate. In the
164 archiving community, a well known saying state that good metadata is a
165 love letter to the future. The metadata in the Internet Archive could
166 use a face lift for the future to love us back. Here is a proposal
167 for a small improvement that would make the metadata more useful
168 today. I've been unable to find any document describing the various
169 standard fields available when uploading videos to the archive, so
170 this proposal is based on my best quess and searching through several
171 of the existing movies.
</p>
173 <p>I have a few use cases in mind. First of all, I would like to be
174 able to count the number of distinct movies in the Internet Archive,
175 without duplicates. I would further like to identify the IMDB title
176 ID of the movies in the Internet Archive, to be able to look up a IMDB
177 title ID and know if I can fetch the video from there and share it
180 <p>Second, I would like the Butter data provider for The Internet
182 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/butterproviders/butter-provider-archive">available
183 from github
</a>), to list as many of the good movies as possible. The
184 plugin currently do a search in the archive with the following
188 collection:moviesandfilms
189 AND NOT collection:movie_trailers
190 AND -mediatype:collection
191 AND format:"Archive BitTorrent"
195 <p>Most of the cool movies that fail to show up in Butter do so
196 because the 'year' field is missing. The 'year' field is populated by
197 the year part from the 'date' field, and should be when the movie was
198 released (date or year). Two such examples are
199 <a href=
"https://archive.org/details/SidneyOlcottsBen-hur1905">Ben Hur
201 <a href=
"https://archive.org/details/Caminandes2GranDillama">Caminandes
202 2: Gran Dillama from
2013</a>, where the year metadata field is
205 So, my proposal is simply, for every movie in The Internet Archive
206 where an IMDB title ID exist, please fill in these metadata fields
207 (note, they can be updated also long after the video was uploaded, but
208 as far as I can tell, only by the uploader):
213 <dd>Should be 'movie' for movies.
</dd>
216 <dd>Should contain 'moviesandfilms'.
</dd>
219 <dd>The title of the movie, without the publication year.
</dd>
222 <dd>The data or year the movie was released. This make the movie show
223 up in Butter, as well as make it possible to know the age of the
224 movie and is useful to figure out copyright status.
</dd>
227 <dd>The director of the movie. This make it easier to know if the
228 correct movie is found in movie databases.
</dd>
231 <dd>The production company making the movie. Also useful for
232 identifying the correct movie.
</dd>
236 <dd>Add a link to the IMDB title page, for example like this:
<a
237 href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028496/"
>Movie in
238 IMDB
</a
>. This make it easier to find duplicates and allow for
239 counting of number of unique movies in the Archive. Other external
240 references, like to TMDB, could be added like this too.
</dd>
244 <p>I did consider proposing a Custom field for the IMDB title ID (for
245 example 'imdb_title_url', 'imdb_code' or simply 'imdb', but suspect it
246 will be easier to simply place it in the links free text field.
</p>
249 <a href=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/public-domain-free-imdb">a
250 list of IMDB title IDs for several thousand movies in the Internet
251 Archive
</a>, but I also got a list of several thousand movies without
252 such IMDB title ID (and quite a few duplicates). It would be great if
253 this data set could be integrated into the Internet Archive metadata
254 to be available for everyone in the future, but with the current
255 policy of leaving metadata editing to the uploaders, it will take a
256 while before this happen. If you have uploaded movies into the
257 Internet Archive, you can help. Please consider following my proposal
258 above for your movies, to ensure that movie is properly
261 <p>The list is mostly generated using wikidata, which based on
262 Wikipedia articles make it possible to link between IMDB and movies in
263 the Internet Archive. But there are lots of movies without a
264 Wikipedia article, and some movies where only a collection page exist
265 (like for
<a href=
"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caminandes">the
266 Caminandes example above
</a>, where there are three movies but only
267 one Wikidata entry).

288 check the copyright status of IMDB entries

289 number of movies listed in IMDB that is legal to distribute on the

296 <p>So far I have identified

297 better understanding of the structure of the data set, I created a
298 histogram of the year associated with each movie (typically release
299 year). It is interesting to notice where the peaks and dips in the

306 <p>I've so far identified ten sources for IMDB title IDs for movies in
307 the public domain or with a free license. This is the statistics
308 reported when running 'make stats' in the git repository:
</p>
311 249 entries (
6 unique) with and
288 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-archive-org-butter.json
312 2301 entries (
540 unique) with and
0 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-archive-org-wikidata.json
313 830 entries (
29 unique) with and
0 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-icheckmovies-archive-mochard.json
314 2109 entries (
377 unique) with and
0 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-imdb-pd.json
315 291 entries (
122 unique) with and
0 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-letterboxd-pd.json
316 144 entries (
135 unique) with and
0 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-manual.json
317 350 entries (
1 unique) with and
801 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-publicdomainmovies.json
318 4 entries (
0 unique) with and
124 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-publicdomainreview.json
319 698 entries (
119 unique) with and
118 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-publicdomaintorrents.json
320 8 entries (
8 unique) with and
196 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-vodo.json
321 3186 unique IMDB title IDs in total
324 <p>The entries without IMDB title ID are candidates to increase the
325 data set, but might equally well be duplicates of entries already
326 listed with IMDB title ID in one of the other sources, or represent
327 movies that lack a IMDB title ID. I've seen examples of all these
328 situations when peeking at the entries without IMDB title ID. Based
329 on these data sources, the lower bound for movies listed in IMDB that
330 are legal to distribute on the Internet is between
3186 and
4713.
332 <p>It would be great for improving the accuracy of this measurement,
333 if the various sources added IMDB title ID to their metadata. I have
334 tried to reach the people behind the various sources to ask if they
335 are interested in doing this, without any replies so far. Perhaps you
336 can help me get in touch with the people behind VODO, Public Domain
337 Torrents, Public Domain Movies and Public Domain Review to try to
338 convince them to add more metadata to their movie entries?
</p>
340 <p>Another way you could help is by adding pages to Wikipedia about
341 movies that are legal to distribute on the Internet. If such page
342 exist and include a link to both IMDB and The Internet Archive, the
343 script used to generate free-movies-archive-org-wikidata.json should
344 pick up the mapping as soon as wikidata is updates.

418 <p>Several of these research papers are based on data collected from
419 hundred thousands or millions of disk, and their findings are eye
420 opening. The short story is simply do not implicitly trust RAID or
421 redundant storage systems. Details matter. And unfortunately there
422 are few options on Linux addressing all the identified issues. Both
423 ZFS and Btrfs are doing a fairly good job, but have legal and
424 practical issues on their own. I wonder how cluster file systems like
425 Ceph do in this regard. After all, there is an old saying, you know
426 you have a distributed system when the crash of a computer you have
427 never heard of stops you from getting any work done. The same holds
428 true if fault tolerance do not work.
</p>
430 <p>Just remember, in the end, it do not matter how redundant, or how
431 fault tolerant your storage is, if you do not continuously monitor its

452 know there are easily available web services available for writing
453 LaTeX documents as a team. I thought it was common knowledge, but to
454 make sure at least my readers are aware of it, I would like to mention
455 these useful services for writing LaTeX documents. Some of them even
456 provide a WYSIWYG editor to ease writing even further.
</p>
458 <p>There are two commercial services available,
459 <a href=
"https://sharelatex.com">ShareLaTeX
</a> and
460 <a href=
"https://overleaf.com">Overleaf
</a>. They are very easy to
461 use. Just start a new document, select which publisher to write for
462 (ie which LaTeX style to use), and start writing. Note, these two
463 have announced their intention to join forces, so soon it will only be
464 one joint service. I've used both for different documents, and they
465 work just fine. While
466 <a href=

<a

469 announcement from Overleaf
</a>, they plan to keep the ShareLaTeX code
470 base maintained as free software.
</p>
472 But these two are not the only alternatives.
473 <a href=
"https://app.fiduswriter.org/">Fidus Writer
</a> is another free
474 software solution with
<a href=

475 source available on github

476 others can be found on the nice

480 <p>If you like Google Docs or Etherpad, but would like to write
481 documents in LaTeX, you should check out these services. You can even
482 host your own, if you want to. :)

</a></div>
500 <div class=
"date">25th October
2017</div>
501 <div class=
"body"><p>Recently, I needed to automatically check the copyright status of a
502 set of
<a href=
"http://www.imdb.com/">The Internet Movie database
503 (IMDB)
</a> entries, to figure out which one of the movies they refer
504 to can be freely distributed on the Internet. This proved to be
505 harder than it sounds. IMDB for sure list movies without any
506 copyright protection, where the copyright protection has expired or
507 where the movie is lisenced using a permissive license like one from
508 Creative Commons. These are mixed with copyright protected movies,
509 and there seem to be no way to separate these classes of movies using
510 the information in IMDB.
</p>
512 <p>First I tried to look up entries manually in IMDB,
513 <a href=
"https://www.wikipedia.org/">Wikipedia
</a> and
514 <a href=
"https://www.archive.org/">The Internet Archive
</a>, to get a
515 feel how to do this. It is hard to know for sure using these sources,
516 but it should be possible to be reasonable confident a movie is "out
517 of copyright" with a few hours work per movie. As I needed to check
518 almost
20,
000 entries, this approach was not sustainable. I simply
519 can not work around the clock for about
6 years to check this data
522 <p>I asked the people behind The Internet Archive if they could
523 introduce a new metadata field in their metadata XML for IMDB ID, but
524 was told that they leave it completely to the uploaders to update the
525 metadata. Some of the metadata entries had IMDB links in the
526 description, but I found no way to download all metadata files in bulk
527 to locate those ones and put that approach aside.
</p>
529 <p>In the process I noticed several Wikipedia articles about movies
530 had links to both IMDB and The Internet Archive, and it occured to me
531 that I could use the Wikipedia RDF data set to locate entries with
532 both, to at least get a lower bound on the number of movies on The
533 Internet Archive with a IMDB ID. This is useful based on the
534 assumption that movies distributed by The Internet Archive can be
535 legally distributed on the Internet. With some help from the RDF
536 community (thank you DanC), I was able to come up with this query to
537 pass to
<a href=
"https://query.wikidata.org/">the SPARQL interface on
541 SELECT ?work ?imdb ?ia ?when ?label
544 ?work wdt:P31/wdt:P279* wd:Q11424.
545 ?work wdt:P345 ?imdb.
548 ?work wdt:P577 ?when.
549 ?work rdfs:label ?label.
550 FILTER(LANG(?label) = "en").
555 <p>If I understand the query right, for every film entry anywhere in
556 Wikpedia, it will return the IMDB ID and The Internet Archive ID, and
557 when the movie was released and its English title, if either or both
558 of the latter two are available. At the moment the result set contain
559 2338 entries. Of course, it depend on volunteers including both
560 correct IMDB and The Internet Archive IDs in the wikipedia articles
561 for the movie. It should be noted that the result will include
562 duplicates if the movie have entries in several languages. There are
563 some bogus entries, either because The Internet Archive ID contain a
564 typo or because the movie is not available from The Internet Archive.
565 I did not verify the IMDB IDs, as I am unsure how to do that
568 <p>I wrote a small python script to extract the data set from Wikidata
569 and check if the XML metadata for the movie is available from The
570 Internet Archive, and after around
1.5 hour it produced a list of
2097
571 free movies and their IMDB ID. In total,
171 entries in Wikidata lack
572 the refered Internet Archive entry. I assume the
70 "disappearing"
573 entries (ie
2338-
2097-
171) are duplicate entries.
</p>
575 <p>This is not too bad, given that The Internet Archive report to
576 contain
<a href=
"https://archive.org/details/feature_films">5331
577 feature films
</a> at the moment, but it also mean more than
3000
578 movies are missing on Wikipedia or are missing the pair of references
581 <p>I was curious about the distribution by release year, and made a
582 little graph to show how the amount of free movies is spread over the
585 <p><img src=
"http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/images/2017-10-25-verk-i-det-fri-filmer.png"></p>
587 <p>I expect the relative distribution of the remaining
3000 movies to
590 <p>If you want to help, and want to ensure Wikipedia can be used to
591 cross reference The Internet Archive and The Internet Movie Database,
592 please make sure entries like this are listed under the "External
593 links" heading on the Wikipedia article for the movie:

597 * {{IMDb title|id=
0036823|title=The Fighting Lady}}
600 <p>Please verify the links on the final page, to make sure you did not
601 introduce a typo.

825 <div class=
"body"><p>At my nearby maker space,
826 <a href=
"http://sonen.ifi.uio.no/">Sonen
</a>, I heard the story that it
827 was easier to generate gcode files for theyr
3D printers (Ultimake
2+)
828 on Windows and MacOS X than Linux, because the software involved had
829 to be manually compiled and set up on Linux while premade packages
830 worked out of the box on Windows and MacOS X. I found this annoying,
831 as the software involved,
832 <a href=
"https://github.com/Ultimaker/Cura">Cura
</a>, is free software
833 and should be trivial to get up and running on Linux if someone took
834 the time to package it for the relevant distributions. I even found
835 <a href=
"https://bugs.debian.org/706656">a request for adding into
836 Debian
</a> from
2013, which had seem some activity over the years but
837 never resulted in the software showing up in Debian. So a few days
838 ago I offered my help to try to improve the situation.
</p>
840 <p>Now I am very happy to see that all the packages required by a
841 working Cura in Debian are uploaded into Debian and waiting in the NEW
842 queue for the ftpmasters to have a look. You can track the progress
844 <a href=
"https://qa.debian.org/developer.php?email=3dprinter-general%40lists.alioth.debian.org">the
845 status page for the
3D printer team
</a>.
</p>
847 <p>The uploaded packages are a bit behind upstream, and was uploaded
848 now to get slots in
<a href=
"https://ftp-master.debian.org/new.html">the NEW
849 queue
</a> while we work up updating the packages to the latest
850 upstream version.
</p>
852 <p>On a related note, two competitors for Cura, which I found harder
853 to use and was unable to configure correctly for Ultimaker
2+ in the
854 short time I spent on it, are already in Debian. If you are looking
855 for
3D printer "slicers" and want something already available in
857 <a href=
"https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/slic3r">slic3r
</a> and
858 <a href=
"https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/slic3r-prusa">slic3r-prusa
</a>.
859 The latter is a fork of the former.

890 så langt har jeg fått alt jeg har lett etter. De har i tillegg det
