99 <div class="body"><p>Microsoft have announced that Windows XP reaches its end of life
100 2014-04-08, in 7 days. But there are heaps of machines still running
101 Windows XP, and depending on Windows XP to run their applications, and
102 upgrading will be expensive, both when it comes to money and when it
103 comes to the amount of effort needed to migrate from Windows XP to a
104 new operating system. Some obvious options (buy new a Windows
105 machine, buy a MacOSX machine, install Linux on the existing machine)
106 are already well known and covered elsewhere. Most of them involve
107 leaving the user applications installed on Windows XP behind and
108 trying out replacements or updated versions. In this blog post I want
109 to mention one strange bird that allow people to keep the hardware and
110 the existing Windows XP applications and run them on a free software
111 operating system that is Windows XP compatible.</p>

113 <p><a href="http://www.reactos.org/">ReactOS</a> is a free software
114 operating system (GNU GPL licensed) working on providing a operating
115 system that is binary compatible with Windows, able to run windows
116 programs directly and to use Windows drivers for hardware directly.
117 The project goal is for Windows user to keep their existing machines,
118 drivers and software, and gain the advantages from user a operating
119 system without usage limitations caused by non-free licensing. It is
120 a Windows clone running directly on the hardware, so quite different
121 from the approach taken by <a href="http://www.winehq.org/">the Wine
122 project</a>, which make it possible to run Windows binaries on
123 Linux.</p>

125 <p>The ReactOS project share code with the Wine project, so most
126 shared libraries available on Windows are already implemented already.
127 There is also a software manager like the one we are used to on Linux,
128 allowing the user to install free software applications with a simple
129 click directly from the Internet. Check out the
130 <a href="http://www.reactos.org/screenshots">screen shots on the
131 project web site</a> for an idea what it look like (it looks just like
132 Windows before metro).</p>

134 <p>I do not use ReactOS myself, preferring Linux and Unix like
135 operating systems. I've tested it, and it work fine in a virt-manager
136 virtual machine. The browser, minesweeper, notepad etc is working
137 fine as far as I can tell. Unfortunately, my main test application
138 is the software included on a CD with the Lego Mindstorms NXT, which
139 seem to install just fine from CD but fail to leave any binaries on
140 the disk after the installation. So no luck with that test software.
141 No idea why, but hope someone else figure out and fix the problem.
142 I've tried the ReactOS Live ISO on a physical machine, and it seemed
143 to work just fine. If you like Windows and want to keep running your
144 old Windows binaries, check it out by

146 installation CD, the live CD or the preinstalled virtual machine

187 <p>I discovered the <a href="http://www.ltsp.org/">LTSP</a> advantages
188 with "Ubuntu 12.04 alternate install" and after a year of use I
189 started looking for an alternative. Even though I highly value and
190 respect the Ubuntu project, I thought it was necessary for me to
191 change to a more robust and stable alternative. As far as I was using
192 Debian on my personal laptop I thought it would be fine to install
193 Debian and configure an LTSP server myself. Surprised, I discovered
194 that the Debian project also supported a kind of Edubuntu equivalent,
195 and after having some pain I obtained a Debian Edu network up and
196 running. I just loved it.</p>

198 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
199 Edu?</strong></p>

201 <p>I found a main advantage in that, once you know "the tips and
202 tricks", a new installation just works out of the box. It's the most
203 complete alternative I've found to create an LTSP network. All the
204 other distributions seems to be made of plastic, Debian Edu seems to
205 be made of steel.</p>

207 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
208 Edu?</strong></p>

210 <p>I found two main disadvantages.</p>

212 <p>I'm not an expert but I've got notions and I had to spent a considerable
213 amount of time trying to bring up a standard network topology. I'm quite
214 stubborn and I just worked until I did but I'm sure many people with few
215 resources (not big schools, but academies for example) would have switched
216 or dropped.</p>

218 <p>It's amazing how such a complex system like Debian Edu has achieved
219 this out-of-the-box state. Even though tweaking without breaking gets
220 more difficult, as more factors have to be considered. This can
221 discourage many people too.</p>

225 <p>I use Debian, Firefox, Okular, Inkscape, LibreOffice and

232 <p>I don't think there is a need for a particular strategy. The free
233 attribute in both "freedom" and "no price" meanings is what will
234 really bring free software to schools. In my experience I can think of
235 the <a href="http://www.r-project.org/">"R" statistical language</a>; a
236 few years a ago was an extremely nerd tool for university people.
237 Today it's being increasingly used to teach statistics at many
238 different level of studies. I believe free and open software will
239 increasingly gain popularity, but I'm sure schools will be one of the
240 first scenarios where this will happen.</p>

295 <div class="body"><p>Did you ever need to store logs or other files in a way that would
296 allow it to be used as evidence in court, and needed a way to
297 demonstrate without reasonable doubt that the file had not been
298 changed since it was created? Or, did you ever need to document that
299 a given document was received at some point in time, like some
300 archived document or the answer to an exam, and not changed after it
301 was received? The problem in these settings is to remove the need to
302 trust yourself and your computers, while still being able to prove
303 that a file is the same as it was at some given time in the past.</p>

305 <p>A solution to these problems is to have a trusted third party
306 "stamp" the document and verify that at some given time the document
307 looked a given way. Such
308 <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notarius">notarius</a> service
309 have been around for thousands of years, and its digital equivalent is
310 called a
311 <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusted_timestamping">trusted
312 timestamping service</a>. <a href="http://www.ietf.org/">The Internet
313 Engineering Task Force</a> standardised how such service could work a
314 few years ago as <a href="http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3161">RFC
315 3161</a>. The mechanism is simple. Create a hash of the file in
316 question, send it to a trusted third party which add a time stamp to
317 the hash and sign the result with its private key, and send back the
318 signed hash + timestamp. Both email, FTP and HTTP can be used to
319 request such signature, depending on what is provided by the service
320 used. Anyone with the document and the signature can then verify that
321 the document matches the signature by creating their own hash and
322 checking the signature using the trusted third party public key.
323 There are several commercial services around providing such
324 timestamping. A quick search for
325 "<a href="https://duckduckgo.com/?q=rfc+3161+service">rfc 3161
326 service</a>" pointed me to at least
327 <a href="https://www.digistamp.com/technical/how-a-digital-time-stamp-works/">DigiStamp</a>,
328 <a href="http://www.quovadisglobal.co.uk/CertificateServices/SigningServices/TimeStamp.aspx">Quo
329 Vadis</a>,
330 <a href="https://www.globalsign.com/timestamp-service/">Global Sign</a>
331 and <a href="http://www.globaltrustfinder.com/TSADefault.aspx">Global
332 Trust Finder</a>. The system work as long as the private key of the
333 trusted third party is not compromised.</p>

335 <p>But as far as I can tell, there are very few public trusted
336 timestamp services available for everyone. I've been looking for one
337 for a while now. But yesterday I found one over at
338 <a href="https://www.pki.dfn.de/zeitstempeldienst/">Deutches
339 Forschungsnetz</a> mentioned in
340 <a href="http://www.d-mueller.de/blog/dealing-with-trusted-timestamps-in-php-rfc-3161/">a
341 blog by David Müller</a>. I then found
342 <a href="http://www.rz.uni-greifswald.de/support/dfn-pki-zertifikate/zeitstempeldienst.html">a
343 good recipe on how to use the service</a> over at the University of
344 Greifswald.</p>

398 <div class="body"><p>Keeping your DVD collection safe from scratches and curious
399 children fingers while still having it available when you want to see a
400 movie is not straight forward. My preferred method at the moment is
401 to store a full copy of the ISO on a hard drive, and use VLC, Popcorn
402 Hour or other useful players to view the resulting file. This way the
403 subtitles and bonus material are still available and using the ISO is
404 just like inserting the original DVD record in the DVD player.</p>

406 <p>Earlier I used dd for taking security copies, but it do not handle
407 DVDs giving read errors (which are quite a few of them). I've also
408 tried using
409 <a href="http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Ripping_problematic_DVDs_using_dvdbackup_and_genisoimage.html">dvdbackup
410 and genisoimage</a>, but these days I use the marvellous python library
411 and program
412 <a href="http://bblank.thinkmo.de/blog/new-software-python-dvdvideo">python-dvdvideo</a>
413 written by Bastian Blank. It is
414 <a href="http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/python-dvdvideo.html">in Debian
415 already</a> and the binary package name is python3-dvdvideo. Instead
416 of trying to read every block from the DVD, it parses the file
417 structure and figure out which block on the DVD is actually in used,
418 and only read those blocks from the DVD. This work surprisingly well,
419 and I have been able to almost backup my entire DVD collection using
420 this method.</p>

422 <p>So far, python-dvdvideo have failed on between 10 and
423 20 DVDs, which is a small fraction of my collection. The most common
424 problem is
425 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=720831">DVDs
426 using UTF-16 instead of UTF-8 characters</a>, which according to
427 Bastian is against the DVD specification (and seem to cause some
428 players to fail too). A rarer problem is what seem to be inconsistent
429 DVD structures, as the python library
430 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=723079">claim
431 there is a overlap between objects</a>. An equally rare problem claim
432 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=741878">some
433 value is out of range</a>. No idea what is going on there. I wish I
434 knew enough about the DVD format to fix these, to ensure my movie
435 collection will stay with me in the future.</p>

454 kan en få tilgang til den på en enkel måte? Takket være et lite
455 knippe lover og tilhørende forskrifter, blant annet
456 <a href="http://lovdata.no/dokument/NL/lov/2006-05-19-16">offentlighetsloven</a>,
457 <a href="http://lovdata.no/dokument/NL/lov/2003-05-09-31">miljøinformasjonsloven</a>
458 og
459 <a href="http://lovdata.no/dokument/NL/lov/1967-02-10/">forvaltningsloven</a>
460 har en rett til å spørre det offentlige og få svar. Men det finnes
461 intet offentlig arkiv over hva andre har spurt om, og dermed risikerer en
462 å måtte forstyrre myndighetene gang på gang for å få tak i samme
463 informasjonen på nytt. <a href="http://www.mysociety.org/">Britiske
464 mySociety</a> har laget tjenesten
465 <a href="http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/">WhatDoTheyKnow</a> som gjør
466 noe med dette. I Storbritannia blir WhatdoTheyKnow brukt i
467 <a href="http://www.mysociety.org/2011/07/01/whatdotheyknows-share-of-central-government-foi-requests-q2-2011/">ca
468 15% av alle innsynsforespørsler mot sentraladministrasjonen</a>.
469 Prosjektet heter <a href="http://www.alaveteli.org/">Alaveteli</A>, og
470 er takk i bruk en rekke steder etter at løsningen ble generalisert og
471 gjort mulig å oversette. Den hjelper borgerne med å be om innsyn,
472 rådgir ved purringer og klager og lar alle se hvilke henvendelser som
473 er sendt til det offentlige og hvilke svar som er kommet inn, i et
474 søkpart arkiv. Her i Norge holder vi i foreningen NUUG på å få opp en
475 norsk utgave av Alaveteli, og her trenger vi din hjelp med
476 oversettelsen.</p>

478 <p>Så langt er 76 % av Alaveteli oversatt til norsk bokmål, men vi
479 skulle gjerne vært oppe i 100 % før lansering. Oversettelsen gjøres
480<a href="https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/alaveteli/">Transifex,
481 der enhver som registrerer seg</a> og ber om tilgang til
482 bokmålsoversettelsen får bidra. Vi har satt opp en test av tjenesten

486 en kan se hvordan de oversatte meldingen blir seende ut på nettsiden.

489 visdomskilden som Odin måtte gi øyet sitt for å få drikke i. Den

493 hvordan vi lager en flerspråklig tjeneste. Men i første omgang er
494 fokus på bokmålsoversettelsen, der vi selv har nok peiling til å ha

511 project</a> is working on providing the software and hardware for
512 making it easy for non-technical people to host their data and
513 communication at home, and being able to communicate with their

515 going on for a while, and is slowly progressing towards a new test
516 release (0.2).</p>

518 <p>And what day could be better than the Pi day to announce that the
519 new version will provide "hard drive" / SD card / USB stick images for
520 Dreamplug, Raspberry Pi and VirtualBox (or any other virtualization
521 system), and can also be installed using a Debian installer preseed
522 file. The Debian based Freedombox is now based on Debian Jessie,
523 where most of the needed packages used are already present. Only one,
524 the freedombox-setup package, is missing. To try to build your own
525 boot image to test the current status, fetch the freedom-maker scripts
526 and build using

582 storing user home directories and data. The design for handling this
583 in <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu / Skolelinux</a>, is
584 to update the automount rules in LDAP and let the automount daemon on
585 the clients take care of the rest. I was reminded about the need to
586 document this better when one of the customers of
587 <a href="http://www.slxdrift.no/">Skolelinux Drift AS</a>, where I am
588 on the board of directors, asked about how to do this. The steps to
589 get this working are the following:</p>

683 om denne kjernen kan være nyttig i et par av mine prosjekter, og for ett
684 av dem er det mest aktuelt å lagre epost. Jeg klarte ikke finne noen
685 anbefaling om hvordan RFC 822-formattert epost (aka Internett-epost)
686 burde lagres i NOARK5, selv om jeg vet at noen arkiver tar
687 PDF-utskrift av eposten med sitt epostprogram og så arkiverer PDF-en
688 (eller enda værre, tar papirutskrift og lagrer bildet av eposten som
689 PDF i arkivet).</p>
