"body"><p>Wireless mesh networks are self organising and self healing
26 networks that can be used to connect computers across small and large
27 areas, depending on the radio technology used. Normal wifi equipment
28 can be used to create home made radio networks, and there are several
29 successful examples like
30 <a href=
"http://www.freifunk.net/">Freifunk
</a> and
31 <a href=
"http://www.awmn.net/">Athens Wireless Metropolitan Network
</a>
33 <a href=
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wireless_community_networks_by_region#Greece">wikipedia

</a>) around the globe. To give you an idea how it
35 work, check out the nice overview of the Kiel Freifunk community which
36 can be seen from their
37 <a href=
"http://freifunk.in-kiel.de/ffmap/nodes.html">dynamically
38 updated node graph and map
</a>, where one can see how the mesh nodes
39 automatically handle routing and recover from nodes disappearing.
40 There is also a small community mesh network group in Oslo, Norway,
41 and that is the main topic of this blog post.
</p>
43 <p>I've wanted to check out mesh networks for a while now, and hoped
44 to do it as part of my involvement with the
<a
45 href=
"http://www.nuug.no/">NUUG member organisation
</a> community, and
46 my recent involvement in
47 <a href=
"https://wiki.debian.org/FreedomBox">the Freedombox project
</a>
48 finally lead me to give mesh networks some priority, as I suspect a
49 Freedombox should use mesh networks to connect neighbours and family
50 when possible, given that most communication between people are
51 between those nearby (as shown for example by research on Facebook
52 communication patterns). It also allow people to communicate without
53 any central hub to tap into for those that want to listen in on the
54 private communication of citizens, which have become more and more
55 important over the years.
</p>
57 <p>So far I have only been able to find one group of people in Oslo
58 working on community mesh networks, over at the hack space
59 <a href=
"http://hackeriet.no/">Hackeriet
</a> at Husmania. They seem to
60 have started with some Freifunk based effort using OLSR, called
61 <a href=
"http://oslo.freifunk.net/index.php?title=Main_Page">the Oslo
62 Freifunk project
</a>, but that effort is now dead and the people
63 behind it have moved on to a batman-adv based system called
64 <a href=
"http://meshfx.org/trac">meshfx
</a>. Unfortunately the wiki
65 site for the Oslo Freifunk project is no longer possible to update to
66 reflect this fact, so the old project page can't be updated to point to
67 the new project. A while back, the people at Hackeriet invited people
68 from the Freifunk community to Oslo to talk about mesh networks. I
69 came across this video where Hans Jørgen Lysglimt interview the
70 speakers about this talk (from
71 <a href=
"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2Kd7CLkhSY">youtube
</a>):
</p>

"420" height=
"315" src=
"https://www.youtube.com/embed/N2Kd7CLkhSY" frameborder=

></iframe></p>
75 <p>I mentioned OLSR and batman-adv, which are mesh routing protocols.
76 There are heaps of different protocols, and I am still struggling to
77 figure out which one would be "best" for some definitions of best, but
78 given that the community mesh group in Oslo is so small, I believe it
79 is best to hook up with the existing one instead of trying to create a
80 completely different setup, and thus this have decided to focus on
81 batman-adv for now. It sure help me to know that the very cool
82 <a href=
"http://www.servalproject.org/">Serval project in Australia
</a>
83 is using batman-adv as their meshing technology when it create a self
84 organizing and self healing telephony system for disaster areas and
85 less industrialized communities. Check out this cool video presenting
87 <a href=

89 <p><iframe width=
"560" height=

></iframe></p>
91 <p>According to the wikipedia page on
92 <a href=
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_mesh_network">Wireless
93 mesh network
</a> there are around
70 competing schemes for routing
94 packets across mesh networks, and OLSR, B.A.T.M.A.N. and
95 B.A.T.M.A.N. advanced are protocols used by several free software
96 based community mesh networks.
</p>
98 <p>The batman-adv protocol is a bit special, as it provide layer
2
99 (as in ethernet ) routing, allowing ipv4 and ipv6 to work on the same
100 network. One way to think about it is that it provide a mesh based
101 vlan you can bridge to or handle like any other vlan connected to your
102 computer. The required drivers are already in the Linux kernel at
103 least since Debian Wheezy, and it is fairly easy to set up. A
104 <a href=
"http://www.open-mesh.org/projects/batman-adv/wiki/Quick-start-guide">good
105 introduction
</a> is available from the Open Mesh project. These are
106 the key settings needed to join the Oslo meshfx network:
</p>
109 <tr><th>Setting

111 <tr><td>ESSID

113 <td>Cell ID
</td><td>02:BA:

116 <p>The reason for setting ad-hoc wifi Cell ID is to work around bugs
117 in firmware used in wifi card and wifi drivers. (See a nice post from

121 for details.) When these settings are activated and you have some
122 other mesh node nearby, your computer will be connected to the mesh
123 network and can communicate with any mesh node that is connected to
124 any of the nodes in your network of nodes. :)
</p>
126 <p>My initial plan was to reuse my old Linksys WRT54GL as a mesh node,
127 but that seem to be very hard, as I have not been able to locate a
128 firmware supporting batman-adv. If anyone know how to use that old
129 wifi access point with batman-adv these days, please let me know.

137 <p>While investigating mesh networks in Oslo, I came across an old
138 research paper from the university of Stavanger and Telenor Research
139 and Innovation called
140 <a href=
"http://folk.uio.no/paalee/publications/netrel-egeland-iswcs-2008.pdf">The
141 reliability of wireless backhaul mesh networks
</a> and elsewhere
142 learned that Telenor have been experimenting with mesh networks at
143 Grünerløkka in Oslo. So mesh networks are also interesting for
144 commercial companies, even though Telenor discovered that it was hard
145 to figure out a good business plan for mesh networking and as far as I
146 know have closed down the experiment. Perhaps Telenor or others would
147 be interested in a cooperation?

366 <p>About Debian Edu and Skolelinux
</p>
368 <p>Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
369 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
370 configured school network. Immediately after installation a school
371 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
372 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
373 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
374 initial installation of the main server from CD or USB stick all other
375 machines can be installed via the network. The provided school server
376 provides LDAP database and Kerberos authentication service,
377 centralized home directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other
378 services. The desktop contains more than
60 educational software
379 packages and more are available from the Debian archive, and schools
380 can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE and Xfce desktop environment.
</p>
382 <p>This is the seventh test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
383 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
386 <p>Notes for upgrades from Alpha Prereleases
</p>
388 <p>Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
389 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
390 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
391 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (
1) Keep
392 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined on the mailing list. (
2)
393 Accept the new version of gosa.conf and replace both contained admin
394 password placeholders with the password hashes found in the old one
395 (backup copy!). In both cases all users need to change their password
396 to make sure a password is set for CIFS access to their home

418 <a href=
"http://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/">Freedombox project
</a>
419 in
2010, when Eben Moglen presented his vision about serving the need
420 of non-technical people to keep their personal information private and
421 within the legal protection of their own homes. The idea is to give
422 people back the power over their network and machines, and return
423 Internet back to its intended peer-to-peer architecture. Instead of
424 depending on a central service, the Freedombox will give everyone
425 control over their own basic infrastructure.
</p>
427 <p>I've intended to join the effort since then, but other tasks have
428 taken priority. But this summers nasty news about the misuse of trust
429 and privilege exercised by the "western" intelligence gathering
430 communities increased my eagerness to contribute to a point where I
431 actually started working on the project a while back.
</p>
433 <p>The
<a href=
"https://alioth.debian.org/projects/freedombox/">initial
434 Debian initiative
</a> based on the vision from Eben Moglen, is to
435 create a simple and cheap Debian based appliance that anyone can hook
436 up in their home and get access to secure and private services and
437 communication. The initial deployment platform have been the
438 <a href=
"http://www.globalscaletechnologies.com/t-dreamplugdetails.aspx">Dreamplug
</a>,
439 which is a piece of hardware I do not own. So to be able to test what
440 the current Freedombox setup look like, I had to come up with a way to install
441 it on some hardware I do have access to. I have rewritten the
442 <a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/freedom-maker">freedom-maker
</a>
443 image build framework to use .deb packages instead of only copying
444 setup into the boot images, and thanks to this rewrite I am able to
445 set up any machine supported by Debian Wheezy as a Freedombox, using
446 the previously mentioned deb (and a few support debs for packages
447 missing in Debian).
</p>
449 <p>The current Freedombox setup consist of a set of bootstrapping
451 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/freedombox-setup">freedombox-setup
</a>),
452 and a administrative web interface
453 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/Plinth">plinth
</a> + exmachina +
454 withsqlite), as well as a privacy enhancing proxy based on
455 <a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/privoxy">privoxy
</a>
456 (freedombox-privoxy). There is also a web/javascript based XMPP
457 client (
<a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/jwchat">jwchat
</a>)
458 trying (unsuccessfully so far) to talk to the XMPP server
459 (
<a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/ejabberd">ejabberd
</a>). The
460 web interface is pluggable, and the goal is to use it to enable OpenID
461 services, mesh network connectivity, use of TOR, etc, etc. Not much of
462 this is really working yet, see
463 <a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/freedombox-todos/blob/master/TODO">the
464 project TODO
</a> for links to GIT repositories. Most of the code is
465 on github at the moment. The HTTP proxy is operational out of the
466 box, and the admin web interface can be used to add/remove plinth
467 users. I've not been able to do anything else with it so far, but
468 know there are several branches spread around github and other places
469 with lots of half baked features.
</p>
471 <p>Anyway, if you want to have a look at the current state, the
472 following recipes should work to give you a test machine to poke
475 <p><strong>Debian Wheezy amd64
</strong></p>
479 <li>Fetch normal Debian Wheezy installation ISO.
</li>
480 <li>Boot from it, either as CD or USB stick.
</li>
481 <li><p>Press [tab] on the boot prompt and add this as a boot argument
482 to the Debian installer:
<p>
483 <pre>url=
<a href=
"http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/preseed-wheezy.dat">http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/preseed-wheezy.dat
</a></pre></li>
485 <li>Answer the few language/region/password questions and pick disk to
488 <li>When the installation is finished and the machine have rebooted a
489 few times, your Freedombox is ready for testing.
</li>
493 <p><strong>Raspberry Pi Raspbian
</strong></p>
497 <li>Fetch a Raspbian SD card image, create SD card.
</li>
498 <li>Boot from SD card, extend file system to fill the card completely.
</li>
499 <li><p>Log in and add this to /etc/sources.list:
</p>
501 deb
<a href=
"http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/">http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox
</a> wheezy main
503 <li><p>Run this as root:
</p>
505 wget -O - http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/BE1A583D.asc | \
508 apt-get install freedombox-setup
509 /usr/lib/freedombox/setup
511 <li>Reboot into your freshly created Freedombox.
</li>
515 <p>You can test it on other architectures too, but because the
516 freedombox-privoxy package is binary, it will only work as intended on
517 the architectures where I have had time to build the binary and put it
518 in my APT repository. But do not let this stop you. It is only a
519 short "
<tt>apt-get source -b freedombox-privoxy
</tt>" away. :)</p>
521 <p>Note that by default Freedombox is a DHCP server on the
522 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, so if this is your subnet be careful and turn
523 off the DHCP server by running "<tt>update-rc.d isc-dhcp-server
524 disable
</tt>" as root.</p>
526 <p>Please let me know if this works for you, or if you have any
527 problems. We gather on the IRC channel
528 <a href="irc://irc.debian.org:
6667/%
23freedombox
">#freedombox</a> on
529 irc.debian.org and the
530 <a href="http://lists.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/freedombox-discuss
">project
531 mailing list</a>.</p>
533 <p>Once you get your freedombox operational, you can visit
534 <tt>http://your-host-name:8001/</tt> to see the state of the plint
535 welcome screen (dead end - do not be surprised if you are unable to
536 get past it), and next visit <tt>http://your-host-name:8001/help/</tt>
537 to look at the rest of plinth. The default user is 'admin' and the
538 default password is 'secret'.</p>

553 <div class="body
560 <a href="http://beta.holderdeord.no/issues/innfore-datalagringsdirektivet
">Datalagringsdirektivet
561 (DLD)</a>, og innebærer at alle innbyggerne og andre innenfor Norges

575 medienes kildevern i praksis blir radert ut.
588 Arbeiderpartiet.
591 partiene. Her er oversikten over partienes valglister i Oslo, med

</strong></p>
848 <p><a href=
"http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu, also known as
849 Skolelinux
</a>, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
850 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
851 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
852 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
853 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
854 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
855 the main server from CD or USB stick all other machines can be
856 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
857 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
858 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

865 <p>This is the sixth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically this
866 is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the Squeeze
869 <p>ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
870 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
871 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
872 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (
1) Keep
873 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined

</a>. Friday I was
979 told by IBM that the original disk should be thrown away. And as
980 there no longer was a problem if I bricked the firmware, I decided
981 today to try to install Intel firmware to replace the Lenovo firmware
982 currently on the disk.
</p>
984 <p>I searched the Intel site for firmware, and found
985 <a href=
"https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3472&DwnldID=18363&ProductFamily=Solid-State+Drives+and+Caching&ProductLine=Intel%c2%ae+High+Performance+Solid-State+Drive&ProductProduct=Intel%c2%ae+SSD+520+Series+(180GB%2c+2.5in+SATA+6Gb%2fs%2c+25nm%2c+MLC)&lang=eng">issdfut_2.0

986 (aka Intel SATA Solid-State Drive Firmware Update Tool) which
987 according to the site should contain the latest firmware for SSD
988 disks. I inserted the broken disk in one of my spare laptops and
989 booted the ISO from a USB stick. The disk was recognized, but the
990 program claimed the newest firmware already were installed and refused
991 to insert any Intel firmware. So no change, and the disk is still
992 unable to handle write load. :( I guess the only way to get them
993 working would be if Lenovo releases new firmware. No idea how likely
994 that is. Anyway, just blogging about this test for completeness. I
995 got a working Samsung disk, and see no point in spending more time on
996 the broken disks.

</a></div>
1010 <div class=
"date"> 2nd August
2013</div>
1011 <div class=
"body"><p>It has been a while since my last update. Since last summer, I
1012 have worked on a Norwegian
1013 <a href=
"http://www.docbook.org/">docbook
</a> version of the
2004 book
1014 <a href=
"http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture
</a> by Lawrence Lessig,
1015 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
1016 law. Yesterday, I finally broken the
90% mark, when counting the
1017 number of strings to translate. Due to real life constraints, I have
1018 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
1019 I found time to work on it again. Still lots of work left, but the
1020 first draft is nearing completion. I created a graph to show the
1021 progress of the translation:
</p>
1023 <p><img width=
"80%" align=
"center" src=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/free-culture-lessig/raw/master/progress.png"></p>
1025 <p>When the first draft is done, the translated text need to be
1026 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG
1027 drawings need to be fixed. There are probably also some index entries
1028 missing that need to be added. This can be done by comparing the
1029 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
1030 English docbook version with the paper version. Last, the colophon
1031 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
1032 done. I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
1033 of the index pages. All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
1034 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
1035 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.
</p>
1037 <p>There is still need for translators and people with docbook
1038 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
1039 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
1040 translation and proof reading. And I would like the figures to be
1041 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them. Any SVG master
1042 around? There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.
1043 If you want to help, please get in touch with me, and check out the
1044 project files currently available from
1045 <a href=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/free-culture-lessig">github
</a>.
</p>
1047 <p>If you are curious what the translated book currently look like,

1052 are published on github. The HTML version is published as well, but
1053 github hand it out with MIME type text/plain, confusing browsers, so I
1054 saw no point in linking to that version.
