26 bøker til Stortinget, for utdeling til alle stortingsrepresentanter.

32 <p><strong>Er opphavsretten for streng, spør ny bok</strong></p>

34 <p>I dag kommer boken «<a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Fri
35 kultur</a>» av Lawrence Lessig ut på norsk. Boken handler om
36 utviklingen og utvidelsene opphavsretten har hatt de siste 40 årene.
37 Boken er i dag gitt i gave til alle stortingsrepresentantene.
38 Oversetter og utgiver Petter Reinholdtsen håper Stortinget vil tenke
39 seg om to ganger neste gang det er snakk om utvidelse av
40 opphavsretten.</p>

42 <p>Boken forteller om hvordan store medieaktører ved hjelp av
43 opphavsretten bruker teknologi til å begrense kulturen og kontrollere
44 kreativiteten. Den er skrevet av stifteren av
45 <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons</a>, professor
46 Lawrence Lessig, som for tiden er med i kampen om å bli Demokratenes
47 <a href="https://lessig2016.us/">presidentkandidat i USA sitt
48 presidentvalg i 2016</a>. Lessig ble sist omtalt i norske medier da
49 NRK i høst viste dokumentaren «Kampen for et demokratisk internett»
50 som også er
51 <a href="https://archive.org/details/TheInternetsOwnBoyTheStoryOfAaronSwartz">tilgjengelig
52 fra The Internet Archive</a>.</p>

54 <p>Boken beskriver hvordan opphavsrettens makt i USA har blitt
55 betydelig utvidet etter 1974 langs fem kritiske akser: varighet (fra
56 32 til 95 år), omfang (fra utgivere til alle), rekkevidde (gjelder nå
57 enhver fremvisning via datamaskin), kontroll (avledede verk er
58 definert så bredt at i praksis alle nye åndsverk risikerer søksmål fra
59 en opphavsrettsinnehaver) og til sist maktkonsentrasjon og integrering
60 av mediebransjen. Den dokumenterer også hvordan medieindustrien har
61 lyktes med å bruke rettsvesenet til å begrense konkurranse, og i
62 praksis har skaffet seg vetorett over teknologiske nyvinninger.
63 Nedlasting av fritt, lovlig og i utgangspunktet gratis materiale
64 stoppes med tekniske sperrer og lobbyert lovvern av sperrene.</p>

66 <p>Utvidelsene illustreres i boken med ulike eksempler. For eksempel
67 en demonstrasjon av at Walt Disney ville ha blitt ansett som en
68 opphavsrettspirat dersom han gjorde i dag det han gjorde på
69 1930-tallet. Boken beskriver hvordan vern av åndsverk er bra, men at
70 mer vern ikke nødvendigvis er bedre.<?p>

126 gjennomgang av hvordan økende åndsverksregulering skader både
127 nyskapning og kulturlivet, og skisserer hvordan både lovgivere og oss
128 vanlige borgere kan bidra for å få slutt på dette.</p>

130 <p>Derfor bestemte jeg meg sommeren 2012 for å oversette den til norsk
131 bokmål og gjøre den tilgjengelig for de blant mine venner og familie
132 som foretrekker å lese bøker på norsk. Jeg oversatte boken ved hjelp
133 av docbook og en gettext PO-fil, og endte opp med to utgaver, en på
134 norsk og en på engelsk. Den engelske publiserte jeg i forrige uke, og

185 <p>In 2004, as the <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons
186 movement</a> gained momentum, its creator Lawrence Lessig wrote the
187 book <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Culture_(book)">Free
188 Culture</a> to explain the problems with increasing copyright
189 regulation and suggest some solutions. I read the book back then and
190 was very moved by it. Reading the book inspired me and changed the
191 way I looked on copyright law, and I would love it if more people
192 would read it too.</p>

194 <p>Because of this, I decided in the summer of 2012 to translate it to
195 Norwegian Bokmål and publish it for those of my friends and family
196 that prefer to read books in Norwegian. I translated the book using
197 docbook and a gettext PO file, and a byproduct of this process is a
198 new edition of the English original. I've been in touch with the
199 author during by work, and he said it was fine with him if I also
200 published an English version. So I decided to do so. Today, I made
201 this edition

302 Snowden is no Whistle-Blower</a> because he should have taken up his
303 concerns internally and using official channels. It make me sad

320 Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz</a>" is both inspiring
321 and depressing at the same time. The work of Aaron Swartz has
322 inspired me in my work, and I am grateful of all the improvements he
323 was able to initiate or complete. I wish I am able to do as much good
324 in my life as he did in his. Every minute of this 1:45 long movie is
325 inspiring in documenting how much impact a single person can have on
326 improving the society and this world. And it is depressing in
327 documenting how the law enforcement of USA (and other countries) is
328 corrupted to a point where they can push a bright kid to his death for
329 downloading too many scientific articles. Aaron is dead. Let us all
330 weep.</p>

352 artikkel i Aftenposten</a> der det fortelles at «over 600 telefoner som
353 benyttes av stortingsrepresentanter, rådgivere og ansatte på
354 Stortinget, kan «fjernstyres» ved hjelp av
355 <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.airwatch.androidagent">programvaren
356 Airwatch</a>, et såkalte MDM-program (Mobile Device Managment)». Det
357 hele bagatelliseres av Stortingets IT-stab, men det er i hovedsak på
358 grunn av at journalisten ikke stiller de relevante spørsmålene. For
359 meg er det relevante spørsmålet hvem som har lovlig tilgang (i henhold
360 til lokal lovgiving, dvs. i hvert fall i Norge, Sverige, UK og USA)
361 til informasjon om og på telefonene, og hvor enkelt det er å skaffe
362 seg tilgang til hvor mobilene befinner seg og informasjon som befinner
363 seg på telefonene ved hjelp av utro tjenere, trusler, innbrudd og
364 andre ulovlige metoder.</p>

366 <p>Bruken av AirWatch betyr i realiteten at USAs etteretning og
367 politimyndigheter har full tilgang til stortingets mobiltelefoner,
368 inkludert posisjon og innhold, takket være
369 <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_Intelligence_Surveillance_Act_of_1978_Amendments_Act_of_2008">FISAAA-loven</a>

385 <p>Oppdatering 2015-10-07: Jeg er blitt spurt hvorfor jeg antar at
386 AirWatch-agenten rapporterer til USA og ikke direkte til Stortingets
387 egen infrastruktur. Det stemmer at det er teknisk mulig å sette
388 opp mobiltelefonene til å rapportere til datamaskiner som eies av
389 Stortinget. Jeg antar det rapporteres til AirWatch sine sentrale
390 tjenester basert på det jeg leste fra beskrivelsen av
391 <a href="http://www.airwatch.com/solutions/mobile-device-management/">Mobile
392 Device Management</A> på AirWatch sine egne nettsider, koblet med at
393 det brukes en standard app som kan hentes fra "app-butikkene" for å få
394 tilgang. Enten må app-en settes opp individuelt hos Stortinget, eller

424 developer of the dblatex docbook processor, Benoît Guillon, decided a
425 to try to create a French version of the book. He started with the
426 French translation available from the
427 <a href="http://www.wikilivres.ca/wiki/Culture_libre">Wikilivres wiki
428 pages</a>, and wrote a program to convert it into a PO file, allowing
429 the translation to be integrated into the po4a based framework I use
430 to create the Norwegian translation from the English edition. We meet
431 on the <a href="irc://irc.freenode.net/%23dblatex">#dblatex IRC
432 channel</a> to discuss the work. If you want to help create a French
433 edition, check out

435 repository</a> and join us on IRC. If the French edition look good,

453 But this do not last. The last few laptops gave me a feeling that
454 within a year, the life time is just a fraction of what it used to be,
455 and it slowly become painful to use the laptop without power connected
456 all the time. Because of this, when I got a new Thinkpad X230 laptop
457 about two years ago, I decided to monitor its battery state to have
458 more hard facts when the battery started to fail.</p>

462 <p>First I tried to find a sensible Debian package to record the
463 battery status, assuming that this must be a problem already handled
464 by someone else. I found

467 broken. I sent a few suggestions to the maintainer, but decided to
468 write my own collector as a shell script while I waited for feedback

477 battery stats ever since. Now my

540 <p>I wrote a small script to create a graph of the charge development
541 over time. This graph depicted above show the slow death of my laptop
542 battery.</p>

544 <p>But why is this happening? Why are my laptop batteries always
545 dying in a year or two, while the batteries of space probes and
546 satellites keep working year after year. If we are to believe
547 <a href="http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries">Battery
548 University</a>, the cause is me charging the battery whenever I have a
549 chance, and the fix is to not charge the Lithium-ion batteries to 100%
550 all the time, but to stay below 90% of full charge most of the time.
551 I've been told that the Tesla electric cars

553 the charge of their batteries to 80%</a>, with the option to charge to
554 100% when preparing for a longer trip (not that I would want a car
555 like Tesla where rights to privacy is abandoned, but that is another
556 story), which I guess is the option we should have for laptops on
557 Linux too.</p>

559 <p>Is there a good and generic way with Linux to tell the battery to
560 stop charging at 80%, unless requested to charge to 100% once in
561 preparation for a longer trip? I found
562 <a href="http://askubuntu.com/questions/34452/how-can-i-limit-battery-charging-to-80-capacity">one
563 recipe on askubuntu for Ubuntu to limit charging on Thinkpad to
564 80%</a>, but could not get it to work (kernel module refused to
565 load).</p>

567 <p>I wonder why the battery capacity was reported to be more than 100%
568 at the start. I also wonder why the "full capacity" increases some
569 times, and if it is possible to repeat the process to get the battery
570 back to design capacity. And I wonder if the discharge and charge
571 speed change over time, or if this stay the same. I did not yet try
572 to write a tool to calculate the derivative values of the battery
573 level, but suspect some interesting insights might be learned from
574 those.</p>

576 <p>Update 2015-09-24: I got a tip to install the packages
577 acpi-call-dkms and tlp (unfortunately missing in Debian stable)
578 packages instead of the tp-smapi-dkms package I had tried to use
579 initially, and use 'tlp setcharge 40 80' to change when charging start
580 and stop. I've done so now, but expect my existing battery is toast
581 and need to be replaced. The proposal is unfortunately Thinkpad
582 specific.</p>

597 <div class="body"><p>Creating a good looking book cover proved harder than I expected.
598 I wanted to create a cover looking similar to the original cover of

600 <a href="https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/free-culture-lessig">Free
601 Culture</a> book we are translating to Norwegian, and I wanted it in
602 vector format for high resolution printing. But my inkscape knowledge
603 were not nearly good enough to pull that off.

605 <p>But thanks to the great inkscape community, I was able to wrap up
606 the cover yesterday evening. I asked on the
607 <a href="irc://irc.freenode.net/%23inkscape">#inkscape IRC channel</a>
608 on Freenode for help and clues, and Marc Jeanmougin (Mc-) volunteered
609 to try to recreate it based on the PDF of the cover from the HTML
610 version. Not only did he create a
611 <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/copy1.svg ">SVG document with
612 the original and his vector version side by side</a>, he even provided
613 an <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/out-1.ogv">instruction
614 video</a> explaining how he did it</a>. But the instruction video is
615 not easy to follow for an untrained inkscape user. The video is a
616 recording on how he did it, and he is obviously very experienced as
617 the menu selections are very quick and he mentioned on IRC that he did
618 use some keyboard shortcuts that can't be seen on the video, but it
619 give a good idea about the inkscape operations to use to create the
620 stripes with the embossed copyright sign in the center.</p>

622 <p>I took his SVG file, copied the vector image and re-sized it to fit
623 on the cover I was drawing. I am happy with the end result, and the
624 current english version look like this:</p>

634 <p>The book is very close to being ready for publication, and I expect
635 to upload the final draft to Lulu in the next few days and order a
636 final proof reading copy to verify that everything look like it should
637 before allowing everyone to order their own copy of Free Culture, in
638 English or Norwegian Bokmål. I'm waiting to give the the productive
639 proof readers a chance to complete their work.</p>
