74 about
75 the computer science book collection available in his local
76 library
, and just wanted to share my comment on his theory about
77 computer books becoming obsolete so soon. That is part of the reason
78 why the selection is so sad in almost any local library (it is in mine
79 too), but I believe the major contributing factor is that the people
80 buying books to the library have no way to know a good and future
81 computer classic from trash. And they need to know which one will
82 become a classic in the future, as they would normally buy one of the
83 recently published books.

85
During my university years, I worked for a while at the university
86 library, and even there the person in charge of buying computer
87 related books (and in fact any natural science related book), did not
88 know enough about computers to make a good educated guess. Once, just
89 before Christmas, they had some leftover money on the book budget and
90 I was asked if I could pick out a lot of computer books in the
91 university book store, for the library to buy for their collection. I
92 had a great time picking all the books I dreamt of buying and reading,
93 and the books I knew were classics (like most of the
94 Stevens
95 collection
). I picked several of the generic O'Reilly books (ie
96 documenting protocols, formats and systems, not specific versions of
97 products) and stayed away from the 'teach yourself X in N days' class.
98 I had a great time, and probably picked out more than a hundred books
99 for the library that evening.

101
The sad fact is that there is no way a overworked librarian is
102 going to know that for example
103 The
104 Practice of Programming
is a must-have in any computer library,
105 and they will most of the time end up picking the wrong books to buy.
106 Perhaps you can help your local library make better choices by giving
107 the suggestions for books to get? I know they would love to hear from
108 you, even if their budget might block them from getting your favourite

2.1 etter at det var gått fire og

127 det vi sendte ut:

131
Pressemelding: Ny utgave av norsk stavekontroll med
132 synonymordliste

134

138
«e-post»). Litt
140 over
For å få

152

164 no.speling.org
. Ferdige pakker for

168 prosjekter for blant annet å forbedre stavekontrollteknologien, å

356 Learn, Adapt: Developing Public Policy with Randomised Controlled

359 Battling bad

361 vitenskaplige metoder i større grad for å finne ut hvilke virkemidler

366
Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are the best way to determine
367 wheather a policy is working. They are now used extensively in
368 international development, medicine, and business to identify which
369 policy, drug or sales method is most effective. They are also at
370 the heart of the Behavioural Insights Team's methodology.

372
However, RCTs are not rutinely used to test the effectiveness of
373 public policy interventions in the UK. We think they should be.

376

403
Who are you, and how do you spend your days?

405
I have a PhD in chemistry but since several years I work as teacher
406 in secondary (
15-
18 year old students) and tertiary (a kind of "light"
407 university) schools. Five years ago I started to manage a Learning
408 Management Service server and slowly I got more and more involved with
409 IT.
3 years ago the graduating schools moved completely to Linux and I
410 got the head of the IT for this. The experience collected in chemistry
411 labs computers (for example NMR analysis of protein folding) and in
412 the IT-courses during university where sufficient to start. Self

421
How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux/Debian Edu

424
Looking for Linux / Primary Domain Controller (PDC) I found it
425 already several years ago. But since the system was still not
426 Kerberized and since our schools relies strongly on laptops I didn't
427 use it. I plan to introduce it in the next future, probably for the

434
Many. First of all there is a strong and living community that is
435 very generous for help and hints. Chat help is crucial, together with
436 the mailing list. Second. With Skolelinux you get an already well
437 engineered platform and you don't have to start to build up your PDC
438 and your clients from GNU/scratch; I've already done this once and I
439 can tell it, it is hard. Third, since Skolelinux is a standard
440 platform, it is way easier to educate other IT people and even if the
441 head IT is sick another one could pick up the task without too much
444
What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux/Debian
447
The only real problem I see is that it is a little too less
448 flexible at client level. Debian stable is rocky and desirable, but
449 there are many reasons that force for another choice. For example the
450 need of new drivers for new PC, or the need for a specific OS for some
451 devices that have specific software packages for another specific
452 distribution (I have such a case for whiteboards that have only
453 Ubuntu packages). Thus, I prepared compatibility packages educlient
454 and eduroaming, hoping not to use them ;-)

456
Which free software do you use daily?

458
I have a Debian Stable PDC at school (Kerberos, NIS, NFS) with
459 mixed Debian and Ubuntu clients. If you think that this triad
460 combination is exotic... well I discovered right yesterday that
461 Perceus

464
For myself I run Debian wheezy/sid, but this combination is good
465 only I you have enough competence to fix stuff for yourself, if
466 something breaks. Daily I use texmacs, gnumeric, a little bit of R
467 statistics, kmplot, and less frequently OpenOffice.org.

469
Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
470 get schools to use free software?

472
I think that the only real argument that school managers "hear" is
473 cost reduction. They don't give too much weight on quality, stability,
474 just because they are normally not open to change.

476
Students adapts very quickly to GNU/Linux (and for them being able
477 to switch between different OS is a plus value); teachers and managers
480
We decided to move to Linux because students at our school have own
481 laptop and we have the responsibility to keep the laptop ready to use;
482 we were really unsatisfied with Microsoft since every Monday we had
20
483 machine to fix for viral infections... With Linux this has been
484 reduced to zero, since people installs almost only from official
485 repositories. I think that our special needs brought us to Linux.
486 Those who don't have such needs will hardly move to Linux.
