>About Debian Edu and Skolelinux
</p
>
202 <p
>Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
203 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
204 configured school network. Immediately after installation a school
205 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
206 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
207 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
208 initial installation of the main server from CD or USB stick all other
209 machines can be installed via the network. The provided school server
210 provides LDAP database and Kerberos authentication service,
211 centralized home directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other
212 services. The desktop contains more than
60 educational software
213 packages and more are available from the Debian archive, and schools
214 can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE and Xfce desktop environment.
</p
>
216 <p
>This is the seventh test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
217 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
218 Squeeze release.
</p
>
220 <p
>Notes for upgrades from Alpha Prereleases
</p
>
222 <p
>Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
223 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
224 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
225 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (
1) Keep
226 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined on the mailing list. (
2)
227 Accept the new version of gosa.conf and replace both contained admin
228 password placeholders with the password hashes found in the old one
229 (backup copy!). In both cases all users need to change their password
230 to make sure a password is set for CIFS access to their home

245 <description><p
>I was introduced to the
246 <a href=
"http://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/
">Freedombox project
</a
>
247 in
2010, when Eben Moglen presented his vision about serving the need
248 of non-technical people to keep their personal information private and
249 within the legal protection of their own homes. The idea is to give
250 people back the power over their network and machines, and return
251 Internet back to its intended peer-to-peer architecture. Instead of
252 depending on a central service, the Freedombox will give everyone
253 control over their own basic infrastructure.
</p
>
255 <p
>I
've intended to join the effort since then, but other tasks have
256 taken priority. But this summers nasty news about the misuse of trust
257 and privilege exercised by the
"western
" intelligence gathering
258 communities increased my eagerness to contribute to a point where I
259 actually started working on the project a while back.
</p
>
261 <p
>The
<a href=
"https://alioth.debian.org/projects/freedombox/
">initial
262 Debian initiative
</a
> based on the vision from Eben Moglen, is to
263 create a simple and cheap Debian based appliance that anyone can hook
264 up in their home and get access to secure and private services and
265 communication. The initial deployment platform have been the
266 <a href=
"http://www.globalscaletechnologies.com/t-dreamplugdetails.aspx
">Dreamplug
</a
>,
267 which is a piece of hardware I do not own. So to be able to test what
268 the current Freedombox setup look like, I had to come up with a way to install
269 it on some hardware I do have access to. I have rewritten the
270 <a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/freedom-maker
">freedom-maker
</a
>
271 image build framework to use .deb packages instead of only copying
272 setup into the boot images, and thanks to this rewrite I am able to
273 set up any machine supported by Debian Wheezy as a Freedombox, using
274 the previously mentioned deb (and a few support debs for packages
275 missing in Debian).
</p
>
277 <p
>The current Freedombox setup consist of a set of bootstrapping
279 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/freedombox-setup
">freedombox-setup
</a
>),
280 and a administrative web interface
281 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/Plinth
">plinth
</a
> + exmachina +
282 withsqlite), as well as a privacy enhancing proxy based on
283 <a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/privoxy
">privoxy
</a
>
284 (freedombox-privoxy). There is also a web/javascript based XMPP
285 client (
<a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/jwchat
">jwchat
</a
>)
286 trying (unsuccessfully so far) to talk to the XMPP server
287 (
<a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/ejabberd
">ejabberd
</a
>). The
288 web interface is pluggable, and the goal is to use it to enable OpenID
289 services, mesh network connectivity, use of TOR, etc, etc. Not much of
290 this is really working yet, see
291 <a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/freedombox-todos/blob/master/TODO
">the
292 project TODO
</a
> for links to GIT repositories. Most of the code is
293 on github at the moment. The HTTP proxy is operational out of the
294 box, and the admin web interface can be used to add/remove plinth
295 users. I
've not been able to do anything else with it so far, but
296 know there are several branches spread around github and other places
297 with lots of half baked features.
</p

382 <a href=
"http://beta.holderdeord.no/issues/innfore-datalagringsdirektivet
">Datalagringsdirektivet
383 (DLD)
</a
>, og innebærer at alle innbyggerne og andre innenfor Norges

396 <p
>Hva er problemet, tenkter du kanskje? Et åpenbart problem er at
397 medienes kildevern i praksis blir radert ut.

409 <p
>De fleste partiene var mot, kun to partier stemte for. Høyre og
410 Arbeiderpartiet.
413 partiene. Her er oversikten over partienes valglister i Oslo, med

">Debian Edu, also known as
665 Skolelinux
</a
>, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
666 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
667 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
668 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
669 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
670 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
671 the main server from CD or USB stick all other machines can be
672 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
673 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
674 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

681 <p
>This is the sixth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically this
682 is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the Squeeze
685 <p
>ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
686 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
687 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
688 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (
1) Keep
689 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined

</a

2) Accept the new version of gosa.conf and
692 replace both contained admin password placeholders with the password
693 hashes found in the old one (backup copy!). In both cases every user
694 need to change their their password to make sure a password is set for

786 <description><p
>Earlier, I reported about

789 told by IBM that the original disk should be thrown away. And as
790 there no longer was a problem if I bricked the firmware, I decided
791 today to try to install Intel firmware to replace the Lenovo firmware
792 currently on the disk.
</p
>
794 <p
>I searched the Intel site for firmware, and found

796 (aka Intel SATA Solid-State Drive Firmware Update Tool) which
797 according to the site should contain the latest firmware for SSD
798 disks. I inserted the broken disk in one of my spare laptops and
799 booted the ISO from a USB stick. The disk was recognized, but the
800 program claimed the newest firmware already were installed and refused
801 to insert any Intel firmware. So no change, and the disk is still
802 unable to handle write load. :( I guess the only way to get them
803 working would be if Lenovo releases new firmware. No idea how likely
804 that is. Anyway, just blogging about this test for completeness. I
805 got a working Samsung disk, and see no point in spending more time on
806 the broken disks.

815 <description><p
>It has been a while since my last update. Since last summer, I
816 have worked on a Norwegian
817 <a href=

">docbook
</a
> version of the
2004 book
818 <a href=

">Free Culture
</a
> by Lawrence Lessig,
819 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
820 law. Yesterday, I finally broken the
90% mark, when counting the
821 number of strings to translate. Due to real life constraints, I have
822 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
823 I found time to work on it again. Still lots of work left, but the
824 first draft is nearing completion. I created a graph to show the
825 progress of the translation:

"></p
>
829 <p
>When the first draft is done, the translated text need to be
830 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG
831 drawings need to be fixed. There are probably also some index entries
832 missing that need to be added. This can be done by comparing the
833 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
834 English docbook version with the paper version. Last, the colophon
835 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
836 done. I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
837 of the index pages. All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
838 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
839 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.
</p
>
841 <p
>There is still need for translators and people with docbook
842 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
843 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
844 translation and proof reading. And I would like the figures to be
845 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them. Any SVG master
846 around? There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.

857 github hand it out with MIME type text/plain, confusing browsers, so I
858 saw no point in linking to that version.

">Debian Edu, also known as
879 Skolelinux
</a
>, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
880 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
881 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
882 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
883 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
884 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
885 the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all other machines can be
886 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
887 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
888 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

895 <p
>This is the fifth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
896 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
897 Squeeze release.

909 <li
>Changed version numbers of patched gosa and libpam-mklocaluser
910 packages to make sure our locally patched versions will be replaced
911 by the official packages when they are released from Debian. Those
912 installing alpha version need to reinstall or manually downgrade gosa
913 and libpam-mklocaluser.

</li
>
915 <li
>Added tools for sharing the desktop on KDE (krdc, krfb).

925 <li
>Fixed artwork package to work with gnome, no longer break
926 desktop=gnome installations.
</li
>
927 <li
>Adjusted installer to now work when forced to use a proxy with the
928 netinst CD.
</li
>
929 <li
>Fixed code detecting and setting/loading hardware specific
930 setup/firmware to work more robust out of the box.
</li
>
931 <li
>Adjusted Kerberos setup to detect realm and server settings at
932 install time instead of dynamically at run time. This avoid a crash
933 with krb5-auth-dialog on diskless workstations without a DNS name.
</li
>
934 <li
>Worked around misfeature in network-manager not calling the dhclient
935 exit hooks, causing automatic proxy configuration and automatic host
936 name setting at run time to work again.
</li
>
937 <li
>Fixed feature setting the default Iceweasel start page from URL
938 fetched from LDAP, to allow schools to set the global default by
939 updating the dc=skole,dc=skolelinux,dc=no LDAP object.
</li
>
940 <li
>Changed default host name on all networked machines to be unique
941 (generated from MAC or reverse DNS) after boot.
