14

The other day I was pleased and surprised to discover that Marcelo
15 Salvador had published a
16 video on
17 Youtube showing how to install the standalone Debian Edu /
18 Skolelinux profile. This is the profile intended for use at home or
19 on laptops that should not be integrated into the provided network
20 services (no central home directory, no Kerberos / LDAP directory etc,
21 in other word a single user machine). The result is 11 minutes long,
22 and show some user applications (seem to be rather randomly picked).
23 Missed a few of my favorites like celestia, planets and chromium
24 showing the Zygote Body 3D model
25 of the human body, but I guess he did not know about those or find
26 other programs more interesting. :) And the video do not show the
27 advantages I believe is one of the most valuable featuers in Debian
28 Edu, its central school server making it possible to run hundreds of
29 computers without hard drives by installing one central
30 LTSP server.

31
32
Anyway, check out the video, embedded below and linked to above:

34
35
36
Are there other nice videos demonstrating Skolelinux? Please let
37 me know. :)

46

A few hours ago, the announcement for the first stable release of
47 Debian Edu Wheezy went out from the Debian publicity team. The
48 complete announcement text can be found at
49 the Debian News
50 section, translated to several languages. Please check it out.

51
52
There is one minor known problem that we will fix very soon. One
53 can not install a amd64 Thin Client Server using PXE, as the /var/
54 partition is too small. A workaround is to extend the partition (use
55 lvresize + resize2fs in tty 2 while installing).

112
On other news, I am happy to report that Freedombox based on Debian
113 Jessie is coming along quite well, and soon both Owncloud and using
114 Tor should be available for testers of the Freedombox solution. :) In
115 a few weeks I hope everything needed to test it is included in Debian.
116 The withsqlite package is already in Debian, and the plinth package is
117 pending in NEW. The third and vital part of that puzzle is the
118 metapackage/setup framework, which is still pending an upload. Join

200
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

201
202
Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
203 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
204 configured school network. Immediately after installation a school
205 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
206 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
207 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
208 initial installation of the main server from CD or USB stick all other
209 machines can be installed via the network. The provided school server
210 provides LDAP database and Kerberos authentication service,
211 centralized home directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other
212 services. The desktop contains more than 60 educational software
213 packages and more are available from the Debian archive, and schools
214 can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE and Xfce desktop environment.

215
216
This is the seventh test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
217 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
218 Squeeze release.

219
220
Notes for upgrades from Alpha Prereleases

221
222
Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
223 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
224 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
225 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (1) Keep
226 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined on the mailing list. (2)
227 Accept the new version of gosa.conf and replace both contained admin
228 password placeholders with the password hashes found in the old one
229 (backup copy!). In both cases all users need to change their password
230 to make sure a password is set for CIFS access to their home
231 directory.

232
233
234
cheers,
235
Holger

244

245

I was introduced to the
246 Freedombox project
247 in 2010, when Eben Moglen presented his vision about serving the need
248 of non-technical people to keep their personal information private and
249 within the legal protection of their own homes. The idea is to give
250 people back the power over their network and machines, and return
251 Internet back to its intended peer-to-peer architecture. Instead of
252 depending on a central service, the Freedombox will give everyone
253 control over their own basic infrastructure.

254
255
I've intended to join the effort since then, but other tasks have
256 taken priority. But this summers nasty news about the misuse of trust
257 and privilege exercised by the "western" intelligence gathering
258 communities increased my eagerness to contribute to a point where I
259 actually started working on the project a while back.

260
261
The initial
262 Debian initiative based on the vision from Eben Moglen, is to
263 create a simple and cheap Debian based appliance that anyone can hook
264 up in their home and get access to secure and private services and
265 communication. The initial deployment platform have been the
266 Dreamplug,
267 which is a piece of hardware I do not own. So to be able to test what
268 the current Freedombox setup look like, I had to come up with a way to install
269 it on some hardware I do have access to. I have rewritten the
270 freedom-maker
271 image build framework to use .deb packages instead of only copying
272 setup into the boot images, and thanks to this rewrite I am able to
273 set up any machine supported by Debian Wheezy as a Freedombox, using
274 the previously mentioned deb (and a few support debs for packages
275 missing in Debian).

276
277
The current Freedombox setup consist of a set of bootstrapping
278 scripts
279 (freedombox-setup),
280 and a administrative web interface
281 (plinth + exmachina +
282 withsqlite), as well as a privacy enhancing proxy based on
283 privoxy
284 (freedombox-privoxy). There is also a web/javascript based XMPP
285 client (jwchat)
286 trying (unsuccessfully so far) to talk to the XMPP server
287 (ejabberd). The
288 web interface is pluggable, and the goal is to use it to enable OpenID
289 services, mesh network connectivity, use of TOR, etc, etc. Not much of
290 this is really working yet, see
291 the
292 project TODO for links to GIT repositories. Most of the code is
293 on github at the moment. The HTTP proxy is operational out of the
294 box, and the admin web interface can be used to add/remove plinth
295 users. I've not been able to do anything else with it so far, but
296 know there are several branches spread around github and other places
297 with lots of half baked features.

298
299
Anyway, if you want to have a look at the current state, the
300 following recipes should work to give you a test machine to poke
301 at.

302
303
Debian Wheezy amd64

304
305

306
307
Fetch normal Debian Wheezy installation ISO.

308
Boot from it, either as CD or USB stick.

309

Press [tab] on the boot prompt and add this as a boot argument
310 to the Debian installer:

311
url=http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/preseed-wheezy.dat

312
313
Answer the few language/region/password questions and pick disk to
314 install on.

315
316
When the installation is finished and the machine have rebooted a
317 few times, your Freedombox is ready for testing.

318
319

320
321
Raspberry Pi Raspbian

322
323

324
325
Fetch a Raspbian SD card image, create SD card.

326
Boot from SD card, extend file system to fill the card completely.

327

Log in and add this to /etc/sources.list:

328

329 deb http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox wheezy main
330

331

Run this as root:

332

333 wget -O - http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/BE1A583D.asc | \
334 apt-key add -
335 apt-get update
336 apt-get install freedombox-setup
337 /usr/lib/freedombox/setup
338

339
Reboot into your freshly created Freedombox.

340
341

342
343
You can test it on other architectures too, but because the
344 freedombox-privoxy package is binary, it will only work as intended on
345 the architectures where I have had time to build the binary and put it
346 in my APT repository. But do not let this stop you. It is only a
347 short "apt-get source -b freedombox-privoxy" away. :)

348
349
Note that by default Freedombox is a DHCP server on the
350 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, so if this is your subnet be careful and turn
351 off the DHCP server by running "update-rc.d isc-dhcp-server
352 disable" as root.

353
354
Please let me know if this works for you, or if you have any
355 problems. We gather on the IRC channel
356 #freedombox on
357 irc.debian.org and the
358 project
359 mailing list.

360
361
Once you get your freedombox operational, you can visit
362 http://your-host-name:8001/ to see the state of the plint
363 welcome screen (dead end - do not be surprised if you are unable to
364 get past it), and next visit http://your-host-name:8001/help/
365 to look at the rest of plinth. The default user is 'admin' and the
366 default password is 'secret'.

374

375

393 Wikipedia
394 og Jon Wessel-Aas.

395
396
Hva er problemet, tenkter du kanskje? Et åpenbart problem er at
397 medienes kildevern i praksis blir radert ut.

408
409
De fleste partiene var mot, kun to partier stemte for. Høyre og
410 Arbeiderpartiet.
413 partiene. Her er oversikten over partienes valglister i Oslo, med
417 Ord samt data.stortinget.no.

640 Piratpartiet.

653

The second wheezy based beta release of Debian Edu was wrapped up
654 today, slightly delayed because of some bugs in the initial Windows
655 integration fixes . This is the release announcement:

660 7.1+edu0~b1, based on Debian with codename "Wheezy".

661
662
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

663
664
Debian Edu, also known as
665 Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
666 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
667 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
668 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
669 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
670 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
671 the main server from CD or USB stick all other machines can be
672 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
673 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
674 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The
675 desktop contains
676 more
677 than 60 educational software packages and more are available from
678 the Debian archive, and schools can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE
679 and Xfce desktop environment.

680
681
This is the sixth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically this
682 is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the Squeeze
683 release.

684
685
ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
686 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
687 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
688 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (1) Keep
689 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined
690 on
691 the mailing list. (2) Accept the new version of gosa.conf and
692 replace both contained admin password placeholders with the password
693 hashes found in the old one (backup copy!). In both cases every user
694 need to change their their password to make sure a password is set for
695 CIFS access to their home directory.

696
697
Software updates

698
699

700
701
Added ssh askpass packages to default installation, to ensure ssh
702 work also without a attached tty.

703
Add the command-not-found package to the default installation to
704 make it easier to figure out where to find missing command line
705 tools. Please note, that the command 'update-command-not-found'
706 has to be run as root to actually make it useful (internet access
707 required).

708
709

710
711
Other changes

712
713

714
715
Adjusted the USB stick ISO image build to include every tool
716 needed for desktop=xfce installations.

717
Adjust thin-client-server task to work when installing from USB
718 stick ISO image.

719
Made new grub artwork (changed png from indexed to RGB format).

720
Minor cleanup in the CUPS setup.

721
Make sure that bootstrapping of the Samba domain really happens
722 during installation of the main server and adjust SID handling to
723 cope with this.

724
Make Samba passwords changeable (again) via GOsa².

725
Fix generation of LM and NT password hashes via GOsa² to avoid
726 empty password hashes.

727
Adapted Samba machine domain joining to latest change in the
728 smbldap-tools Perl package, fixing bugs blocking Windows machines
729 from joining the Samba domain.

730
731

732
733
Known issues

734
735

736
737
KDE fails to understand the wpad.dat file provided, causing it to
738 not use the http proxy as it should.

739
Chromium also fails to use the proxy when using the KDE desktop
740 (using the KDE configuration).

741

782
Intel 180 SSD disk with Lenovo firmware can not use Intel firmware

784

785

786

Earlier, I reported about
787 my
788 problems using an Intel SSD 520 Series 180 GB disk. Friday I was
789 told by IBM that the original disk should be thrown away. And as
790 there no longer was a problem if I bricked the firmware, I decided
791 today to try to install Intel firmware to replace the Lenovo firmware
792 currently on the disk.

793
794
I searched the Intel site for firmware, and found
795 issdfut_2.0.4.iso
796 (aka Intel SATA Solid-State Drive Firmware Update Tool) which
797 according to the site should contain the latest firmware for SSD
798 disks. I inserted the broken disk in one of my spare laptops and
799 booted the ISO from a USB stick. The disk was recognized, but the
800 program claimed the newest firmware already were installed and refused
801 to insert any Intel firmware. So no change, and the disk is still
802 unable to handle write load. :( I guess the only way to get them
803 working would be if Lenovo releases new firmware. No idea how likely
804 that is. Anyway, just blogging about this test for completeness. I
805 got a working Samsung disk, and see no point in spending more time on
806 the broken disks.

811
90 percent done with the Norwegian draft translation of Free Culture

812

813

814

815

It has been a while since my last update. Since last summer, I
816 have worked on a Norwegian
817 docbook version of the 2004 book
818 Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig,
819 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
820 law. Yesterday, I finally broken the 90% mark, when counting the
821 number of strings to translate. Due to real life constraints, I have
822 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
823 I found time to work on it again. Still lots of work left, but the
824 first draft is nearing completion. I created a graph to show the
825 progress of the translation:

826
827

828
829
When the first draft is done, the translated text need to be
830 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG
831 drawings need to be fixed. There are probably also some index entries
832 missing that need to be added. This can be done by comparing the
833 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
834 English docbook version with the paper version. Last, the colophon
835 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
836 done. I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
837 of the index pages. All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
838 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
839 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.

840
841
There is still need for translators and people with docbook
842 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
843 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
844 translation and proof reading. And I would like the figures to be
845 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them. Any SVG master
846 around? There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.
847 If you want to help, please get in touch with me, and check out the
848 project files currently available from
849 github.

850
851
If you are curious what the translated book currently look like,
852 the updated
853 PDF
854 and
855 EPUB
856 are published on github. The HTML version is published as well, but
857 github hand it out with MIME type text/plain, confusing browsers, so I
858 saw no point in linking to that version.

867

The first wheezy based beta release of Debian Edu was wrapped up
868 today. This is the release announcement:

869
870
New features for Debian Edu 7.1+edu0~b0 released
871 2013-07-27

872
873
These are the release notes for for Debian Edu / Skolelinux
874 7.1+edu0~b0, based on Debian with codename "Wheezy".

875
876
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

877
878
Debian Edu, also known as
879 Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
880 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
881 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
882 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
883 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
884 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
885 the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all other machines can be
886 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
887 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
888 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The
889 desktop contains
890 more
891 than 60 educational software packages and more are available from
892 the Debian archive, and schools can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE
893 and Xfce desktop environment.

894
895
This is the fifth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
896 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
897 Squeeze release.

898
899
ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
900 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
901 release.

902
903
Software updates

904
905

906
907
Switched roaming workstation profiles from wicd to network-manager
908 for network configuration, as wicd didn't work any more.

909
Changed version numbers of patched gosa and libpam-mklocaluser
910 packages to make sure our locally patched versions will be replaced
911 by the official packages when they are released from Debian. Those
912 installing alpha version need to reinstall or manually downgrade gosa
913 and libpam-mklocaluser.

914
Added bluetooth tools to the default desktop (bluedevil, blueman).

915
Added tools for sharing the desktop on KDE (krdc, krfb).

916
Added valgrind to the default installation for easier debugging of
917 crash bugs.

918
919

920
921
Other changes

922
923

924
925
Fixed artwork package to work with gnome, no longer break
926 desktop=gnome installations.

927
Adjusted installer to now work when forced to use a proxy with the
928 netinst CD.

929
Fixed code detecting and setting/loading hardware specific
930 setup/firmware to work more robust out of the box.

931
Adjusted Kerberos setup to detect realm and server settings at
932 install time instead of dynamically at run time. This avoid a crash
933 with krb5-auth-dialog on diskless workstations without a DNS name.

934
Worked around misfeature in network-manager not calling the dhclient
935 exit hooks, causing automatic proxy configuration and automatic host
936 name setting at run time to work again.

937
Fixed feature setting the default Iceweasel start page from URL
938 fetched from LDAP, to allow schools to set the global default by
939 updating the dc=skole,dc=skolelinux,dc=no LDAP object.

940
Changed default host name on all networked machines to be unique
941 (generated from MAC or reverse DNS) after boot.

942
Adjusted partition sizes to make sure they are big enough.

943
944

945
946
Known issues

947
948

949
950
Grub is missing the new artwork.

951
KDE fail to understand the wpad.dat file provided, causing it to
952 not use the http proxy as it should.

953
Chromium also fail to use the proxy.
