14

Back in 2010, I created a Perl library to talk to
15 the Spykee robot
16 (with two belts, wifi, USB and Linux) and made it available from my
17 web page. Today I concluded that it should move to a site that is
18 easier to use to cooperate with others, and moved it to github. If
19 you got a Spykee robot, you might want to check out
20 the
21 libspykee-perl github repository.

30

The last few days I came across a few good causes that should get
31 wider attention. I recommend signing and donating to each one of
32 these. :)

33
34
Via Debian
35 Project News for 2013-10-14 I came across the Outreach Program for
36 Women program which is a Google Summer of Code like initiative to get
37 more women involved in free software. One debian sponsor has offered
38 to match any donation done to Debian
39 earmarked for this initiative. I donated a few minutes ago, and
40 hope you will to. :)

41
42
And the Electronic Frontier Foundation just announced plans to
43 create video
44 documentaries about the excessive spying on every Internet user that
45 take place these days, and their need to fund the work. I've already
46 donated. Are you next?

47
48
For my Norwegian audience, the organisation Studentenes og
49 Akademikernes Internasjonale Hjelpefond is collecting signatures for a
50 statement under the heading
51 Bloggers United for Open
52 Access for those of us asking for more focus on open access in the
53 Norwegian government. So far 499 signatures. I hope you will sign it
54 too.

59
Oslo community mesh network - with NUUG and Hackeriet at Hausmania

63

Wireless mesh networks are self organising and self healing
64 networks that can be used to connect computers across small and large
65 areas, depending on the radio technology used. Normal wifi equipment
66 can be used to create home made radio networks, and there are several
67 successful examples like
68 Freifunk and
69 Athens Wireless Metropolitan Network
70 (see
71 wikipedia
72 for a large list) around the globe. To give you an idea how it
73 work, check out the nice overview of the Kiel Freifunk community which
74 can be seen from their
75 dynamically
76 updated node graph and map, where one can see how the mesh nodes
77 automatically handle routing and recover from nodes disappearing.
78 There is also a small community mesh network group in Oslo, Norway,
79 and that is the main topic of this blog post.

80
81
I've wanted to check out mesh networks for a while now, and hoped
82 to do it as part of my involvement with the <a
83 href="http://www.nuug.no/">NUUG member organisation community, and
84 my recent involvement in
85 the Freedombox project
86 finally lead me to give mesh networks some priority, as I suspect a
87 Freedombox should use mesh networks to connect neighbours and family
88 when possible, given that most communication between people are
89 between those nearby (as shown for example by research on Facebook
90 communication patterns). It also allow people to communicate without
91 any central hub to tap into for those that want to listen in on the
92 private communication of citizens, which have become more and more
93 important over the years.

94
95
So far I have only been able to find one group of people in Oslo
96 working on community mesh networks, over at the hack space
97 Hackeriet at Husmania. They seem to
98 have started with some Freifunk based effort using OLSR, called
99 the Oslo
100 Freifunk project, but that effort is now dead and the people
101 behind it have moved on to a batman-adv based system called
102 meshfx. Unfortunately the wiki
103 site for the Oslo Freifunk project is no longer possible to update to
104 reflect this fact, so the old project page can't be updated to point to
105 the new project. A while back, the people at Hackeriet invited people
106 from the Freifunk community to Oslo to talk about mesh networks. I
107 came across this video where Hans Jørgen Lysglimt interview the
108 speakers about this talk (from
109 youtube):

110
111

112
113
I mentioned OLSR and batman-adv, which are mesh routing protocols.
114 There are heaps of different protocols, and I am still struggling to
115 figure out which one would be "best" for some definitions of best, but
116 given that the community mesh group in Oslo is so small, I believe it
117 is best to hook up with the existing one instead of trying to create a
118 completely different setup, and thus I have decided to focus on
119 batman-adv for now. It sure help me to know that the very cool
120 Serval project in Australia
121 is using batman-adv as their meshing technology when it create a self
122 organizing and self healing telephony system for disaster areas and
123 less industrialized communities. Check out this cool video presenting
124 that project (from
125 youtube):

126
127

128
129
According to the wikipedia page on
130 Wireless
131 mesh network there are around 70 competing schemes for routing
132 packets across mesh networks, and OLSR, B.A.T.M.A.N. and
133 B.A.T.M.A.N. advanced are protocols used by several free software
134 based community mesh networks.

135
136
The batman-adv protocol is a bit special, as it provide layer 2
137 (as in ethernet ) routing, allowing ipv4 and ipv6 to work on the same
138 network. One way to think about it is that it provide a mesh based
139 vlan you can bridge to or handle like any other vlan connected to your
140 computer. The required drivers are already in the Linux kernel at
141 least since Debian Wheezy, and it is fairly easy to set up. A
142 good
143 introduction is available from the Open Mesh project. These are
144 the key settings needed to join the Oslo meshfx network:

145
146

147

Setting

Value

148

Protocol / kernel module

batman-adv

149

ESSID

meshfx@hackeriet

150
Channel / Frequency

11 / 2462

151
Cell ID

02:BA:00:00:00:01

152

153
154
The reason for setting ad-hoc wifi Cell ID is to work around bugs
155 in firmware used in wifi card and wifi drivers. (See a nice post from
156 VillageTelco about
157 "Information
158 about cell-id splitting, stuck beacons, and failed IBSS merges!
159 for details.) When these settings are activated and you have some
160 other mesh node nearby, your computer will be connected to the mesh
161 network and can communicate with any mesh node that is connected to
162 any of the nodes in your network of nodes. :)

163
164
My initial plan was to reuse my old Linksys WRT54GL as a mesh node,
165 but that seem to be very hard, as I have not been able to locate a
166 firmware supporting batman-adv. If anyone know how to use that old
167 wifi access point with batman-adv these days, please let me know.

168
169
If you find this project interesting and want to join, please join
170 us on IRC, either channel
171 #oslohackerspace
172 or #nuug on
173 irc.freenode.net.

174
175
While investigating mesh networks in Oslo, I came across an old
176 research paper from the university of Stavanger and Telenor Research
177 and Innovation called
178 The
179 reliability of wireless backhaul mesh networks and elsewhere
180 learned that Telenor have been experimenting with mesh networks at
181 Grünerløkka in Oslo. So mesh networks are also interesting for
182 commercial companies, even though Telenor discovered that it was hard
183 to figure out a good business plan for mesh networking and as far as I
184 know have closed down the experiment. Perhaps Telenor or others would
185 be interested in a cooperation?

186
187
Update 2013-10-12: I was just
188 told
189 by the Serval project developers that they no longer use
190 batman-adv (but are compatible with it), but their own crypto based
191 mesh system.

200

The other day I was pleased and surprised to discover that Marcelo
201 Salvador had published a
202 video on
203 Youtube showing how to install the standalone Debian Edu /
204 Skolelinux profile. This is the profile intended for use at home or
205 on laptops that should not be integrated into the provided network
206 services (no central home directory, no Kerberos / LDAP directory etc,
207 in other word a single user machine). The result is 11 minutes long,
208 and show some user applications (seem to be rather randomly picked).
209 Missed a few of my favorites like celestia, planets and chromium
210 showing the Zygote Body 3D model
211 of the human body, but I guess he did not know about those or find
212 other programs more interesting. :) And the video do not show the
213 advantages I believe is one of the most valuable featuers in Debian
214 Edu, its central school server making it possible to run hundreds of
215 computers without hard drives by installing one central
216 LTSP server.

217
218
Anyway, check out the video, embedded below and linked to above:

221
222
Are there other nice videos demonstrating Skolelinux? Please let
223 me know. :)

232

A few hours ago, the announcement for the first stable release of
233 Debian Edu Wheezy went out from the Debian publicity team. The
234 complete announcement text can be found at
235 the Debian News
236 section, translated to several languages. Please check it out.

237
238
There is one minor known problem that we will fix very soon. One
239 can not install a amd64 Thin Client Server using PXE, as the /var/
240 partition is too small. A workaround is to extend the partition (use
241 lvresize + resize2fs in tty 2 while installing).

301 a few weeks I hope everything needed to test it is included in Debian.
302 The withsqlite package is already in Debian, and the plinth package is
303 pending in NEW. The third and vital part of that puzzle is the

385
386
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

387
388
Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
389 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
390 configured school network. Immediately after installation a school
391 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
392 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
393 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
394 initial installation of the main server from CD or USB stick all other
395 machines can be installed via the network. The provided school server
396 provides LDAP database and Kerberos authentication service,
397 centralized home directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other
398 services. The desktop contains more than 60 educational software
399 packages and more are available from the Debian archive, and schools
400 can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE and Xfce desktop environment.

401
402
This is the seventh test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
403 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
404 Squeeze release.

405
406
Notes for upgrades from Alpha Prereleases

407
408
Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
409 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
410 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
411 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (1) Keep
412 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined on the mailing list. (2)
413 Accept the new version of gosa.conf and replace both contained admin
414 password placeholders with the password hashes found in the old one
415 (backup copy!). In both cases all users need to change their password
416 to make sure a password is set for CIFS access to their home
417 directory.

418
419
420
cheers,
421
Holger

430

431

I was introduced to the
432 Freedombox project
433 in 2010, when Eben Moglen presented his vision about serving the need
434 of non-technical people to keep their personal information private and
435 within the legal protection of their own homes. The idea is to give
436 people back the power over their network and machines, and return
437 Internet back to its intended peer-to-peer architecture. Instead of
438 depending on a central service, the Freedombox will give everyone
439 control over their own basic infrastructure.

440
441
I've intended to join the effort since then, but other tasks have
442 taken priority. But this summers nasty news about the misuse of trust
443 and privilege exercised by the "western" intelligence gathering
444 communities increased my eagerness to contribute to a point where I
445 actually started working on the project a while back.

446
447
The initial
448 Debian initiative based on the vision from Eben Moglen, is to
449 create a simple and cheap Debian based appliance that anyone can hook
450 up in their home and get access to secure and private services and
451 communication. The initial deployment platform have been the
452 Dreamplug,
453 which is a piece of hardware I do not own. So to be able to test what
454 the current Freedombox setup look like, I had to come up with a way to install
455 it on some hardware I do have access to. I have rewritten the
456 freedom-maker
457 image build framework to use .deb packages instead of only copying
458 setup into the boot images, and thanks to this rewrite I am able to
459 set up any machine supported by Debian Wheezy as a Freedombox, using
460 the previously mentioned deb (and a few support debs for packages
461 missing in Debian).

462
463
The current Freedombox setup consist of a set of bootstrapping
464 scripts
465 (freedombox-setup),
466 and a administrative web interface
467 (plinth + exmachina +
468 withsqlite), as well as a privacy enhancing proxy based on
469 privoxy
470 (freedombox-privoxy). There is also a web/javascript based XMPP
471 client (jwchat)
472 trying (unsuccessfully so far) to talk to the XMPP server
473 (ejabberd). The
474 web interface is pluggable, and the goal is to use it to enable OpenID
475 services, mesh network connectivity, use of TOR, etc, etc. Not much of
476 this is really working yet, see
477 the
478 project TODO for links to GIT repositories. Most of the code is
479 on github at the moment. The HTTP proxy is operational out of the
480 box, and the admin web interface can be used to add/remove plinth
481 users. I've not been able to do anything else with it so far, but
482 know there are several branches spread around github and other places
483 with lots of half baked features.

484
485
Anyway, if you want to have a look at the current state, the
486 following recipes should work to give you a test machine to poke
487 at.

488
489
Debian Wheezy amd64

490
491

492
493
Fetch normal Debian Wheezy installation ISO.

494
Boot from it, either as CD or USB stick.

495

Press [tab] on the boot prompt and add this as a boot argument
496 to the Debian installer:

497
url=http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/preseed-wheezy.dat

498
499
Answer the few language/region/password questions and pick disk to
500 install on.

501
502
When the installation is finished and the machine have rebooted a
503 few times, your Freedombox is ready for testing.

504
505

506
507
Raspberry Pi Raspbian

508
509

510
511
Fetch a Raspbian SD card image, create SD card.

512
Boot from SD card, extend file system to fill the card completely.

513

Log in and add this to /etc/sources.list:

514

515 deb http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox wheezy main
516

517

Run this as root:

518

519 wget -O - http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/BE1A583D.asc | \
520 apt-key add -
521 apt-get update
522 apt-get install freedombox-setup
523 /usr/lib/freedombox/setup
524

525
Reboot into your freshly created Freedombox.

526
527

528
529
You can test it on other architectures too, but because the
530 freedombox-privoxy package is binary, it will only work as intended on
531 the architectures where I have had time to build the binary and put it
532 in my APT repository. But do not let this stop you. It is only a
533 short "apt-get source -b freedombox-privoxy" away. :)

534
535
Note that by default Freedombox is a DHCP server on the
536 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, so if this is your subnet be careful and turn
537 off the DHCP server by running "update-rc.d isc-dhcp-server
538 disable" as root.

539
540
Please let me know if this works for you, or if you have any
541 problems. We gather on the IRC channel
542 #freedombox on
543 irc.debian.org and the
544 project
545 mailing list.

546
547
Once you get your freedombox operational, you can visit
548 http://your-host-name:8001/ to see the state of the plint
549 welcome screen (dead end - do not be surprised if you are unable to
550 get past it), and next visit http://your-host-name:8001/help/
551 to look at the rest of plinth. The default user is 'admin' and the
552 default password is 'secret'.

560

561

579 Wikipedia
580 og Jon Wessel-Aas.

581
582
Hva er problemet, tenkter du kanskje? Et åpenbart problem er at
583 medienes kildevern i praksis blir radert ut.

594
595
De fleste partiene var mot, kun to partier stemte for. Høyre og
596 Arbeiderpartiet. Og både Høyre og Arbeiderpartiet i Oslo har
597 DLD-forkjempere på toppen av sine lister (har ikke sjekket de andre
598 fylkene). Det er dermed helt uaktuelt for meg å stemme på disse
599 partiene. Her er oversikten over partienes valglister i Oslo, med
600 informasjon om hvem som stemte hva i første DLD-votering i Stortinget,
601 basert på informasjon fra mine venner i

838

839

The second wheezy based beta release of Debian Edu was wrapped up
840 today, slightly delayed because of some bugs in the initial Windows
841 integration fixes . This is the release announcement:

842
843
New features for Debian Edu 7.1+edu0~b1 released 2013-08-22

844
845
These are the release notes for Debian Edu / Skolelinux
846 7.1+edu0~b1, based on Debian with codename "Wheezy".

847
848
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

849
850
Debian Edu, also known as
851 Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
852 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
853 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
854 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
855 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
856 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
857 the main server from CD or USB stick all other machines can be
858 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
859 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
860 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The
861 desktop contains
862 more
863 than 60 educational software packages and more are available from
864 the Debian archive, and schools can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE
865 and Xfce desktop environment.

866
867
This is the sixth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically this
868 is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the Squeeze
869 release.

870
871
ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
872 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
873 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
874 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (1) Keep
875 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined
876 on
877 the mailing list. (2) Accept the new version of gosa.conf and
878 replace both contained admin password placeholders with the password
879 hashes found in the old one (backup copy!). In both cases every user
880 need to change their their password to make sure a password is set for
881 CIFS access to their home directory.

882
883
Software updates

884
885

886
887
Added ssh askpass packages to default installation, to ensure ssh
888 work also without a attached tty.

889
Add the command-not-found package to the default installation to
890 make it easier to figure out where to find missing command line
891 tools. Please note, that the command 'update-command-not-found'
892 has to be run as root to actually make it useful (internet access
893 required).

894
895

896
897
Other changes

898
899

900
901
Adjusted the USB stick ISO image build to include every tool
902 needed for desktop=xfce installations.

903
Adjust thin-client-server task to work when installing from USB
904 stick ISO image.

905
Made new grub artwork (changed png from indexed to RGB format).

906
Minor cleanup in the CUPS setup.

907
Make sure that bootstrapping of the Samba domain really happens
908 during installation of the main server and adjust SID handling to
909 cope with this.

910
Make Samba passwords changeable (again) via GOsa².

911
Fix generation of LM and NT password hashes via GOsa² to avoid
912 empty password hashes.

913
Adapted Samba machine domain joining to latest change in the
914 smbldap-tools Perl package, fixing bugs blocking Windows machines
915 from joining the Samba domain.

916
917

918
919
Known issues

920
921

922
923
KDE fails to understand the wpad.dat file provided, causing it to
924 not use the http proxy as it should.

925
Chromium also fails to use the proxy when using the KDE desktop
926 (using the KDE configuration).

927
928

929
930
Where to get it

931
932
To download the multiarch netinstall CD release you can use
