66 interview last November. But the developers and translators are still
67 pulling along to get the Wheezy based release out the door, and this
68 time I managed to get an interview from one of the French translators
69 in the project, Cédric Boutillier.
</p>
71 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong></p>
73 <p>I am
34 year old. I live near Paris, France. I am an assistant
74 professor in probability theory. I spend my daytime teaching
75 mathematics at the university and doing fundamental research in
76 probability in connexion with combinatorics and statistical physics.
</p>
78 <p>I have been involved in the Debian project for a couple of years
79 and became Debian Developer a few months ago. I am working on Ruby
80 packaging, publicity and translation.
</p>
82 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
85 <p>I came to the Debian Edu project after a call for translation of
86 <a href=
"http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Manuals">the
87 Debian Edu manual
</a> for the release of Debian Edu Squeeze. Since
88 then, I have been working on updating the French translation of the
91 <p>I had the opportunity to make an installation of Debian Edu in a
92 virtual machine when I was preparing localised version of some screen
93 shots for the manual. I was amazed to see it worked out of the box and
94 how comprehensive the list of software installed by default was.
</p>
96 <p>What amazed me was the complete network infrastructure directly
97 ready to use, which can and the nice administration interface provided
98 by
<a href=
"https://oss.gonicus.de/labs/gosa/">GOsa²
</a>. What pleased
99 me also was the fact that among the software installed by default,
100 there were many "traditional" educative software to learn languages,
101 to count, to program... but also software to develop creativity and
102 artistic skills with music (
<a href=
"http://ardour.org/">Ardour
</a>,
103 <a href=
"http://audacity.sourceforge.net/">Audacity
</a>) and
104 movies/animation (I was especially thinking of
105 <a href=
"http://linuxstopmotion.sourceforge.net/">Stopmotion
</a>).
</p>
107 <p>I am following the development of Debian Edu and am hanging out on
108 <a href=
"irc://irc.debian.org/%23debian-edu">#debian-edu
</a>.
109 Unfortunately, I don't much time to get more involved in this
110 beautiful project.
</p>
112 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
115 <p>For me, the main advantages of Skolelinux/Debian Edu are its
116 community of experts and its precise documentation, as well as the
117 fact that it provides a solution ready to use.
</p>
119 <p>I would add also the fact that it is based on the rock solid Debian
120 distribution, which ensures stability and provides a huge collection
121 of educational free software.
</p>
123 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
126 <p>Maybe the lack of manpower to do lobbying on the
127 project. Sometimes, people who need to take decisions concerning IT do
128 not have all the elements to evaluate properly free software
129 solutions. The fact that support by a company may be difficult to find
130 is probably a problem if the school does not have IT personnel.
</p>
132 <p>One can find support from a company by looking at
133 <a href=
"http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Help/ProfessionalHelp">the
134 wiki dokumentation
</a>, where some countries already have a number of
135 companies providing support for Debian Edu, like Germany or
136 Norway. This list is easy to find readily from the manual. However,
137 for other countries, like France, the list is empty. I guess that
138 consultants proposing support for Debian would be able to provide some
139 support for Debian Edu as well.
</p>
141 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong></p>
143 <p>I am using the KDE Plasma Desktop. But the pieces of software I use
144 most runs in a terminal: Mutt and OfflineIMAP for emails, latex for
145 scientific documents, mpd for music. VIM is my editor of choice. I am
146 also using the mathematical software
147 <a href=
"http://www.scilab.org/en/scilab/about">Scilab
</a> and
148 <a href=
"http://www.sagemath.org/index.html">Sage
</a> (built from
149 source as not completely packaged for Debian, yet).
151 <p><strong>Do you have any suggestions for teachers interested in
152 using the free software in Debian to teach mathematics and
153 statistics?
</strong></p>
155 <p>I do not have any "nice" recommendations for statistics. At our
156 university, we use both
<a href=
"http://www.r-project.org/">R
</a> and
157 Scilab to teach statistics and probabilistic simulations. For
158 geometry, there are nice programs:
</p>
162 <li><a href=
"http://www.drgeo.eu/">drgeo
</a> and
163 <a href=
"http://edu.kde.org/applications/all/kig">kig
</a> to do
164 constructions in planar geometry
166 <li><a href=
"http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/software/download/kali.html">kali
</a>
167 to discover symmetry groups (the so-called wallpapers and frieze
168 groups), although the interface looks a bit old.
</li>
173 <a href=
"http://edu.kde.org/applications/all/cantor">cantor
</a>, which
174 provides a uniform interface to SciLab, Sage,
175 <a href=
"http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Octave">Octave
</a>, etc...
</p>
177 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
178 get schools to use free software?
</strong></p>
180 <p>My suggestions would be to
</p>
184 <li>advertise the reduction of costs when free software is used.
</li>
186 <li>communicate about the quality of free software projects, using
187 well known examples like Firefox, ThunderBird and
188 OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice.
</li>
190 <li>advertise the living and strong community around the project.
</li>
192 <li>show that it is not more difficult to use than any other

427 with the obstacles put in the way of Linux users on a laptop with UEFI
430 <p>I never found out if the cause of my problems were the use of UEFI

432 causing the firmware to boot directly from HD without considering any
433 key presses and alternative devices, but do not know UEFI settings
436 <p>There is no way to install Linux on the machine in question without
437 opening the box and disconnecting the hard drive! This is as far as I
438 can tell, the only way to get access to the firmware setup menu
439 without accepting the Windows
8 license agreement. I am told (and
440 found description on how to) that it is possible to configure the
441 firmware setup once booted into Windows
8. But as I believe the terms
442 of that agreement are completely unacceptable, accepting the license
443 was never an alternative. I do not enter agreements I do not intend
446 <p>I feared I had to return the laptops and ask for a refund, and
447 waste many hours on this, but luckily there was a way to get it to
448 work. But I would not recommend it to anyone planning to run Linux on
449 it, and I have become sceptical to Windows
8 certified laptops. Is
450 this the way Linux will be forced out of the market place, by making
451 it close to impossible for "normal" users to install Linux without
452 accepting the Microsoft Windows license terms? Or at least not
453 without risking to loose the warranty?

478 new laptops for my parents and a few others. I bought Packard Bell
479 Easynote LV to run Kubuntu on and use as their home computer. But I
480 am completely unable to figure out how to install Linux on it. The
481 computer is preinstalled with Windows
8, and I suspect it uses UEFI
482 instead of a BIOS to boot.
</p>
484 <p>The problem is that I am unable to get it to PXE boot, and unable
485 to get it to boot the Linux installer from my USB stick. I have yet
486 to try the DVD install, and still hope it will work. when I turn on
487 the computer, there is no information on what buttons to press to get
488 the normal boot menu. I expect to get some boot menu to select PXE or

</strong></p>
532 <p>Jeg heter Nirosan Thiyagalingam. Jeg er
24 år og studerer
533 dataingeniør studiet ved Høgskolen i Sør Trøndelag. Interessen for
535 vært glad i å lære nye ting.
</p>
541 <p><strong>Hvordan kom du i kontakt med Skolelinux-prosjektet?
</strong></p>
548 <a href=
"http://www.raspberrypi.org">Raspberry PI
559 <a href=
"http://www.raspbian.org/">Raspian
</a>. Dette er et
560 operativsystem basert på Debian spesiallaget for Raspberry Pi sin
561 maskinvare.
5 minutter. Ikke nok med det,
567 alt skjer helt automatisk.
571 kontorprogrammer fungerer godt.
</p>
584 <a href=
"http://www.berryterminal.com/">BerryTerminal
</a> for å få til
</p>
604 like stor grad som for eksempel
605 <a href=
"http://www.ubuntu.com">Ubuntu
</a> sine sider. Deres side
609 Skolelinux-prosjektet.
</p>
611 <p><strong>Hvilken fri programvare bruker du til daglig?
</strong></p>
614 sentersystemet
<a href=
"http://xbmc.org/">XBMC
</strong></p>
629 ansvarlige få teste ut hvordan Skolelinux fungerer i praksis.

650 pupils in the primary schools. It provide both the central server,
651 network boot servers and desktop environments with heaps of
652 educational software. The project was founded almost

658 <p>A topic that come up again and again on the Debian Edu mailing
659 lists and elsewhere, is the question on how to transform a Debian or
660 Ubuntu installation into a Debian Edu installation. It isn't very
661 hard, and last week I wrote a script to replicate the steps done by
662 the Debian Edu installer.
</p>
665 <a href=

<a/>
666 in the debian-edu-config package, will go through these six steps and
667 transform an existing Debian Wheezy or Ubuntu (untested) installation
668 into a Debian Edu Workstation:
</p>
672 <li>Add skolelinux related APT sources.
</li>
673 <li>Create /etc/debian-edu/config with the wanted configuration.
</li>
674 <li>Install debian-edu-install to load preseeding values and pull in
675 our configuration.
</li>
676 <li>Preseed debconf database with profile setup in
677 /etc/debian-edu/config, and run tasksel to install packages
678 according to the profile specified in the config above,
679 overriding some of the Debian automation machinery.
</li>
680 <li>Run debian-edu-cfengine-D installation to configure everything
681 that could not be done using preseeding.
</li>
682 <li>Ask for a reboot to enable all the configuration changes.
</li>
686 <p>There are some steps in the Debian Edu installation that can not be
687 replicated like this. Disk partitioning and LVM setup, for example.
688 So this script just assume there is enough disk space to install all
689 the needed packages.
</p>
691 <p>The script was created to help a Debian Edu student working on
692 setting up
<a href=
"http://www.raspberrypi.org">Raspberry Pi

693 Debian Edu client, and using it he can take the existing

695 transform it into a fully functioning Debian Edu Workstation (or
696 Roaming Workstation, or whatever :).
</p>
698 <p>The default setting in the script is to create a KDE Workstation.
699 If a LXDE based Roaming workstation is wanted instead, modify the
700 PROFILE and DESKTOP values at the top to look like this instead:
</p>
703 PROFILE="Roaming-Workstation"
707 <p>The script could even become useful to set up Debian Edu servers in

736 <p><strong>About Debian Edu and Skolelinux
</strong></p>
738 <p>Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
739 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
740 configured school network. Immediatly after installation a school
741 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
742 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
743 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
744 initial installation of the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all
745 other machines can be installed via the network.
</p>
747 <p>This is the first test release based on Wheezy (which currently is
748 not released yet). Basically this is an updated and slightly improved
749 version compared to the Squeeze release.
</p>
751 <p><strong>Software updates
</strong></p>
753 <li>Install freemind (
0.9.0) by default, and stop installing vym by
755 <li>Install chromium (

768 <li>Extended and improved the testsuite tests to detect more possible
770 <li>Corrected proxy handling to not set http_proxy to a bogus
772 <li>Corrected proxy setup for diskless workstations.
</li>
773 <li>Corrected PXE setup to use our updated udebs during installation.
</li>
774 <li>Made installation handling of low entropy level more robust.
</li>
775 <li>Create larger partitions for Roaming workstations and Thin client
776 servers, to make room for all the software installed.
</li>
777 <li>Fix bug in Roaming workstation PAM setup, making it impossible to
778 log in (
<a href=
