33 We have two problems blocking the release of the Wheezy version we
34 hope to get released soon. The two problems require some with PHP
35 skills, and we seem to lack anyone with both time and PHP skills in

41 (slbackup-php) using the root user and password. This is

43 This used to work, but stopped working some time since Squeeze.

46 <li>It is not possible to "mass import" user lists in Gosa, neither
47 using ldif nor using CSV files. The feature was disabled after a
48 major rewrite of Gosa, and need to be ported to the new system.

79 interview last November. But the developers and translators are still
80 pulling along to get the Wheezy based release out the door, and this
81 time I managed to get an interview from one of the French translators
82 in the project, Cédric Boutillier.</p>

84 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?</strong></p>

86 <p>I am 34 year old. I live near Paris, France. I am an assistant
87 professor in probability theory. I spend my daytime teaching
88 mathematics at the university and doing fundamental research in
89 probability in connexion with combinatorics and statistical physics.</p>

91 <p>I have been involved in the Debian project for a couple of years
92 and became Debian Developer a few months ago. I am working on Ruby
93 packaging, publicity and translation.</p>

95 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
96 project?</strong></p>

98 <p>I came to the Debian Edu project after a call for translation of
99 <a href="http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Manuals">the
100 Debian Edu manual</a> for the release of Debian Edu Squeeze. Since
101 then, I have been working on updating the French translation of the
102 manual.

104 <p>I had the opportunity to make an installation of Debian Edu in a
105 virtual machine when I was preparing localised version of some screen
106 shots for the manual. I was amazed to see it worked out of the box and
107 how comprehensive the list of software installed by default was.</p>

109 <p>What amazed me was the complete network infrastructure directly
110 ready to use, which can and the nice administration interface provided
111 by <a href="https://oss.gonicus.de/labs/gosa/">GOsa²</a>. What pleased
112 me also was the fact that among the software installed by default,
113 there were many "traditional" educative software to learn languages,
114 to count, to program... but also software to develop creativity and
115 artistic skills with music (<a href="http://ardour.org/">Ardour</a>,
116 <a href="http://audacity.sourceforge.net/">Audacity</a>) and
117 movies/animation (I was especially thinking of
118 <a href="http://linuxstopmotion.sourceforge.net/">Stopmotion</a>).</p>

120 <p>I am following the development of Debian Edu and am hanging out on
121 <a href="irc://irc.debian.org/%23debian-edu">#debian-edu</a>.
122 Unfortunately, I don't much time to get more involved in this
123 beautiful project.</p>

125 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
126 Edu?</strong></p>

128 <p>For me, the main advantages of Skolelinux/Debian Edu are its
129 community of experts and its precise documentation, as well as the
130 fact that it provides a solution ready to use.</p>

132 <p>I would add also the fact that it is based on the rock solid Debian
133 distribution, which ensures stability and provides a huge collection
134 of educational free software.</p>

136 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
137 Edu?</strong></p>

139 <p>Maybe the lack of manpower to do lobbying on the
140 project. Sometimes, people who need to take decisions concerning IT do
141 not have all the elements to evaluate properly free software
142 solutions. The fact that support by a company may be difficult to find
143 is probably a problem if the school does not have IT personnel.</p>

145 <p>One can find support from a company by looking at
146 <a href="http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Help/ProfessionalHelp">the
147 wiki dokumentation</a>, where some countries already have a number of
148 companies providing support for Debian Edu, like Germany or
149 Norway. This list is easy to find readily from the manual. However,
150 for other countries, like France, the list is empty. I guess that
151 consultants proposing support for Debian would be able to provide some
152 support for Debian Edu as well.</p>

154 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?</strong></p>

156 <p>I am using the KDE Plasma Desktop. But the pieces of software I use
157 most runs in a terminal: Mutt and OfflineIMAP for emails, latex for
158 scientific documents, mpd for music. VIM is my editor of choice. I am
159 also using the mathematical software

161 <a href="http://www.sagemath.org/index.html‎">Sage</a> (built from
162 source as not completely packaged for Debian, yet).

230 i Oslo</a>, en institusjon som lenge har vektlagt verdien av åpne
231 standarder og fri programvare. Men noe har endret seg, og for en
232 liten stund tilbake annonserte USIT at dagens fungerende e-postsystemet
233 basert på fri programvare skulle byttes ut med Microsoft Exchange og
234 at Microsoft Outlook skulle bli den best fungerende men antagelig ikke
235 eneste støttede e-postklienten. Annonseringen har ført til flere
236 protester og <a href="http://folk.uio.no/dssantos/nooutlookatuio/">en
237 underskriftskampanje</a>, initiert av Diana Santos, der så langt 253
238 personer har signert. Prosjektet

240 kalender/e-post)</a> ble initiert for å se på mulige løsninger med
