27 <p>We write
2018, and it is
30 years since Unicode was introduced.
28 Most of us in Norway have come to expect the use of our alphabet to
29 just work with any computer system. But it is apparently beyond reach
30 of the computers printing recites at a restaurant. Recently I visited
31 a Peppes pizza resturant, and noticed a few details on the recite.
32 Notice how 'ø' and 'å' are replaced with strange symbols in
33 'Servitør', 'Å BETALE', 'Beløp pr. gjest', 'Takk for besøket.' and 'Vi
34 gleder oss til å se deg igjen'.

36 <p>I would say that this state is passed sad and over in embarrassing.

105 just a few days ago, and as you can see from the summary, it extended
106 my list with
63 movies. Check out the mklist-* scripts in the git
107 repository if you are curious how the lists are created. Many of the
108 titles are extracted using searches on IMDB, where I look for the
109 title and year, and accept search results with only one movie listed
110 if the year matches. This allow me to automatically use many lists of
111 movies without IMDB title ID references at the cost of increasing the
112 risk of wrongly identify a IMDB title ID as public domain. So far my
113 random manual checks have indicated that the method is solid, but I
114 really wish all lists of public domain movies would include unique
115 movie identifier like the IMDB title ID. It would make the job of
116 counting movies in the public domain a lot easier.

153 histogram-grafen lagt inn i dokumentasjonen i saken. Dommerne var

160 <p><strong>Kommentarer til «Evaluation of (il)legality» for Popcorn
163 <p><strong>Oppsummering
</strong></p>
173 Chaplin-filmen «The Circus» fra
175 Jeg finner tre flere blant de observerte filmene: «The Brain That
176 Wouldn't Die» fra
1962, «God’s Little Acre» fra
1958 og «She Wore a
177 Yellow Ribbon» fra
180 at mindre enn
1 % kan deles lovlig.
</p>
</p>
191 Time, men (u)lovligheten til innholdet i bittorrent-filmkataloger
192 som vedlikeholdes uavhengig av Popcorn Time.

197 <p><strong>Utfyllende kommentarer
</strong></p>
</p>
</p>
100 unike
223 filmtitler var identifisert.
</p>

Dokument

249 <p>IMDB er en forkortelse for The Internet Movie Database, en
</p>
265 klart å identifisere over
11 000 filmer, hovedsaklig spillefilmer.
268 faktum at alle filmer laget i USA før
1923 er falt i det fri.
269 Tilsvarende tidsgrense for Storbritannia er
1912-
07-
01, men dette
270 utgjør bare veldig liten del av spillefilmene i IMDB (
19 totalt).
274 <a href=
"https://archive.org/about/terms.php">policy å kun publisere
275 filmer som det er lovlig å distribuere
</p>
296 over
44 000
310 langt. Konklusjonen er at tallet
I følge
<a
312 href=
"http://www.imdb.com/stats">statistikk fra IMDB
</a> er det
4.6
313 millioner titler registrert, hvorav
</p>
</p>
319 <p align=
"center"><img width=
"80%" src=
"http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/images/2017-12-20-histogram-year.png"></p>
326 <a href=
"https://creativecommons.org/">Creative
327 Commons
</a>-bevegelsen..
</p>
331 Time-varianter og laster ned komplett liste over filmer i
334 bittorrent-kataloger. Den ene brukes av klienten tilgjengelig fra
335 www.popcorntime.sh og er navngitt 'sh' i dette dokumentet. Den
336 andre brukes i følge dokument
09,
09,
For
9 from Outer Space fra
1959 og Night of the Living
358 Dead fra
362 <a href=
"http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-happy-birthday-song-lawsuit-decision-20150922-story.html">historien
363 om sangen «Happy birthday»
</a> forteller oss, der betaling for bruk

</p>

375 både filmen «The Brain That Wouldn't Die» fra

</p>
391 regnearkfanen 'Unique titles' i dokument
09.14, fant jeg i tillegg
392 filmen «She Wore a Yellow Ribbon» fra
1949) som nok også er
393 feilklassifisert. Filmen «She Wore a Yellow Ribbon» er tilgjengelig
</p>
402 <p>Den omtalte målemetoden velger ut tilfeldige søketermer fra
403 ordlisten Dale-Chall. Den ordlisten inneholder
3000 enkle engelske
411 innhold i bittorrent-katalogene.
</p>
100x100=)
10 000
</p>
5 nederste i søkeresultatet i
427 stedet. Avviket for disse to metodene for endel kataloger er godt
428 synlig på histogramet. Her er histogram over filmer funnet i den
430 ord i Dale-Chall. Grafer merket 'top' henter fra de
5 første i
5 siste.

450 laget for bruk med Popcorn Time.

462 <p><strong>1. Evaluation of (il)legality
</strong></p>
464 <p><strong>1.1. Methodology
</strong>
466 <p>Due to its technical configuration, Popcorn Time applications don't
467 allow to make a full list of all titles made available. In order to
468 evaluate the level of illegal operation of PCT, the following
469 methodology was applied:
</p>
473 <li>A random selection of
50 keywords, greater than
3 letters, was
474 made from the Dale-Chall list that contains
3000 simple English
475 words1. The selection was made by using a Random Number
478 <li>For each keyword, starting with the first randomly selected
479 keyword, a search query was conducted in the movie section of the
480 respective Popcorn Time application. For each keyword, the first
481 five results were added to the title list until the number of
100
482 unique titles was reached (duplicates were removed).
</li>
484 <li>For one fork, .CH, insufficient titles were generated via this
485 approach to reach
100 titles. This was solved by adding any
486 additional query results above five for each of the
50 keywords.
487 Since this still was not enough, another
42 random keywords were
488 selected to finally reach
100 titles.
</li>
490 <li>It was verified whether or not there is a reasonable expectation
491 that the work is copyrighted by checking if they are available on
492 IMDb, also verifying the director, the year when the title was
493 released, the release date for a certain market, the production
494 company/ies of the title and the distribution company/ies.
</li>
498 <p><strong>1.2. Results
</strong></p>
500 <p>Between
6 and
9 June
2016, four forks of Popcorn Time were
501 investigated: popcorn-time.to, popcorntime.ag, popcorntime.sh and
502 popcorntime.ch. An excel sheet with the results is included in
503 Appendix
1. Screenshots were secured in separate Appendixes for each
504 respective fork, see Appendix
2-
5.
</p>
506 <p>For each fork, out of
100, de-duplicated titles it was possible to
507 retrieve data according to the parameters set out above that indicate
508 that the title is commercially available. Per fork, there was
1 title
509 that presumably falls within the public domain, i.e. the
1928 movie
510 "The Circus" by and with Charles Chaplin.
</p>
512 <p>Based on the above it is reasonable to assume that
99% of the movie
513 content of each fork is copyright protected and is made available
516 <p>This exercise was not repeated for TV series, but considering that
517 besides production companies and distribution companies also
518 broadcasters may have relevant rights, it is reasonable to assume that
519 at least a similar level of infringement will be established.
</p>
521 <p>Based on the above it is reasonable to assume that
99% of all the
522 content of each fork is copyright protected and are made available

582 <div class=
"body"><p>While looking at
583 <a href=
"http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/cce/">the scanned copies
584 for the copyright renewal entries for movies published in the USA
</a>,
585 an idea occurred to me. The number of renewals are so few per year, it
586 should be fairly quick to transcribe them all and add references to
587 the corresponding IMDB title ID. This would give the (presumably)
588 complete list of movies published
28 years earlier that did _not_
589 enter the public domain for the transcribed year. By fetching the
590 list of USA movies published
28 years earlier and subtract the movies
591 with renewals, we should be left with movies registered in IMDB that
592 are now in the public domain. For the year
1955 (which is the one I
593 have looked at the most), the total number of pages to transcribe is
594 21. For the
28 years from
1950 to
1978, it should be in the range
595 500-
600 pages. It is just a few days of work, and spread among a
596 small group of people it should be doable in a few weeks of spare
599 <p>A typical copyright renewal entry look like this (the first one
600 listed for
1955):
</p>
603 ADAM AND EVIL, a photoplay in seven reels by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
604 Distribution Corp. (c)
17Aug27; L24293. Loew's Incorporated (PWH);
608 <p>The movie title as well as registration and renewal dates are easy
609 enough to locate by a program (split on first comma and look for
610 DDmmmYY). The rest of the text is not required to find the movie in
611 IMDB, but is useful to confirm the correct movie is found. I am not
612 quite sure what the L and R numbers mean, but suspect they are
613 reference numbers into the archive of the US Copyright Office.
</p>
615 <p>Tracking down the equivalent IMDB title ID is probably going to be
616 a manual task, but given the year it is fairly easy to search for the
617 movie title using for example
618 <a href=
"http://www.imdb.com/find?q=adam+and+evil+1927&s=all">http://www.imdb.com/find?q=adam+and+evil+
1927&s=all
</a>.
619 Using this search, I find that the equivalent IMDB title ID for the
620 first renewal entry from
1955 is
621 <a href=
"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017588/">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017588/
</a>.
</p>
623 <p>I suspect the best way to do this would be to make a specialised
624 web service to make it easy for contributors to transcribe and track
625 down IMDB title IDs. In the web service, once a entry is transcribed,
626 the title and year could be extracted from the text, a search in IMDB
627 conducted for the user to pick the equivalent IMDB title ID right
628 away. By spreading out the work among volunteers, it would also be
629 possible to make at least two persons transcribe the same entries to
630 be able to discover any typos introduced. But I will need help to
631 make this happen, as I lack the spare time to do all of this on my
632 own. If you would like to help, please get in touch. Perhaps you can
633 draft a web service for crowd sourcing the task?
</p>
635 <p>Note, Project Gutenberg already have some
636 <a href=
"http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/search/?query=copyright+office+renewals">transcribed
637 copies of the US Copyright Office renewal protocols
</a>, but I have
638 not been able to find any film renewals there, so I suspect they only
639 have copies of renewal for written works. I have not been able to find
640 any transcribed versions of movie renewals so far. Perhaps they exist
643 <p>I would love to figure out methods for finding all the public
644 domain works in other countries too, but it is a lot harder. At least
645 for Norway and Great Britain, such work involve tracking down the
646 people involved in making the movie and figuring out when they died.
647 It is hard enough to figure out who was part of making a movie, but I
648 do not know how to automate such procedure without a registry of every
649 person involved in making movies and their death year.

1927 (sources disagree), and presumably
681 registered its copyright that year. At that time, right holders of
682 movies registered by the copyright office received government
683 protection for there work for
28 years. After
28 years, the copyright
684 had to be renewed if the wanted the government to protect it further.

759 2: Gran Dillama from
2013</a>, where the year metadata field is
762 So, my proposal is simply, for every movie in The Internet Archive
763 where an IMDB title ID exist, please fill in these metadata fields
764 (note, they can be updated also long after the video was uploaded, but
765 as far as I can tell, only by the uploader):
770 <dd>Should be 'movie' for movies.
</dd>
773 <dd>Should contain 'moviesandfilms'.
</dd>
776 <dd>The title of the movie, without the publication year.
</dd>
779 <dd>The data or year the movie was released. This make the movie show
780 up in Butter, as well as make it possible to know the age of the
781 movie and is useful to figure out copyright status.
</dd>
784 <dd>The director of the movie. This make it easier to know if the
785 correct movie is found in movie databases.
</dd>
788 <dd>The production company making the movie. Also useful for
789 identifying the correct movie.
</dd>
793 <dd>Add a link to the IMDB title page, for example like this:
<a
794 href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028496/"
>Movie in
795 IMDB
</a
>. This make it easier to find duplicates and allow for
796 counting of number of unique movies in the Archive. Other external
797 references, like to TMDB, could be added like this too.
</dd>
801 <p>I did consider proposing a Custom field for the IMDB title ID (for
802 example 'imdb_title_url', 'imdb_code' or simply 'imdb', but suspect it
803 will be easier to simply place it in the links free text field.
</p>
806 <a href=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/public-domain-free-imdb">a
807 list of IMDB title IDs for several thousand movies in the Internet
808 Archive
</a>, but I also got a list of several thousand movies without
809 such IMDB title ID (and quite a few duplicates). It would be great if
810 this data set could be integrated into the Internet Archive metadata
811 to be available for everyone in the future, but with the current
812 policy of leaving metadata editing to the uploaders, it will take a
813 while before this happen. If you have uploaded movies into the
814 Internet Archive, you can help. Please consider following my proposal
815 above for your movies, to ensure that movie is properly
818 <p>The list is mostly generated using wikidata, which based on
819 Wikipedia articles make it possible to link between IMDB and movies in
820 the Internet Archive. But there are lots of movies without a
821 Wikipedia article, and some movies where only a collection page exist
822 (like for
<a href=
"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caminandes">the
823 Caminandes example above
</a>, where there are three movies but only
824 one Wikidata entry).

844 <a href=
"http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Locating_IMDB_IDs_of_movies_in_the_Internet_Archive_using_Wikidata.html">automatically
845 check the copyright status of IMDB entries
</a>, and try to count the
846 number of movies listed in IMDB that is legal to distribute on the
847 Internet. I have continued to look for good data sources, and
848 identified a few more. The code used to extract information from
849 various data sources is available in
850 <a href=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/public-domain-free-imdb">a
851 git repository
</a>, currently available from github.
</p>
853 <p>So far I have identified
3186 unique IMDB title IDs. To gain
854 better understanding of the structure of the data set, I created a
855 histogram of the year associated with each movie (typically release
856 year). It is interesting to notice where the peaks and dips in the
857 graph are located. I wonder why they are placed there. I suspect
858 World War II caused the dip around
1940, but what caused the peak
861 <p align=
"center"><img src=
"http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/images/2017-11-18-verk-i-det-fri-filmer.png" /></p>
863 <p>I've so far identified ten sources for IMDB title IDs for movies in
864 the public domain or with a free license. This is the statistics
865 reported when running 'make stats' in the git repository:
</p>
868 249 entries (
6 unique) with and
288 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-archive-org-butter.json
869 2301 entries (
540 unique) with and
0 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-archive-org-wikidata.json
870 830 entries (
29 unique) with and
0 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-icheckmovies-archive-mochard.json
871 2109 entries (
377 unique) with and
0 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-imdb-pd.json
872 291 entries (
122 unique) with and
0 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-letterboxd-pd.json
873 144 entries (
135 unique) with and
0 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-manual.json
874 350 entries (
1 unique) with and
801 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-publicdomainmovies.json
875 4 entries (
0 unique) with and
124 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-publicdomainreview.json
876 698 entries (
119 unique) with and
118 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-publicdomaintorrents.json
877 8 entries (
8 unique) with and
196 without IMDB title ID in free-movies-vodo.json
878 3186 unique IMDB title IDs in total
881 <p>The entries without IMDB title ID are candidates to increase the
882 data set, but might equally well be duplicates of entries already
883 listed with IMDB title ID in one of the other sources, or represent
884 movies that lack a IMDB title ID. I've seen examples of all these
885 situations when peeking at the entries without IMDB title ID. Based
886 on these data sources, the lower bound for movies listed in IMDB that
887 are legal to distribute on the Internet is between
3186 and
4713.
889 <p>It would be great for improving the accuracy of this measurement,
890 if the various sources added IMDB title ID to their metadata. I have
891 tried to reach the people behind the various sources to ask if they
892 are interested in doing this, without any replies so far. Perhaps you
893 can help me get in touch with the people behind VODO, Public Domain
894 Torrents, Public Domain Movies and Public Domain Review to try to
895 convince them to add more metadata to their movie entries?
</p>
897 <p>Another way you could help is by adding pages to Wikipedia about
898 movies that are legal to distribute on the Internet. If such page
899 exist and include a link to both IMDB and The Internet Archive, the
900 script used to generate free-movies-archive-org-wikidata.json should
901 pick up the mapping as soon as wikidata is updates.

975 <p>Several of these research papers are based on data collected from
976 hundred thousands or millions of disk, and their findings are eye
977 opening. The short story is simply do not implicitly trust RAID or
978 redundant storage systems. Details matter. And unfortunately there
979 are few options on Linux addressing all the identified issues. Both
980 ZFS and Btrfs are doing a fairly good job, but have legal and
981 practical issues on their own. I wonder how cluster file systems like
982 Ceph do in this regard. After all, there is an old saying, you know
983 you have a distributed system when the crash of a computer you have
984 never heard of stops you from getting any work done. The same holds
985 true if fault tolerance do not work.
</p>
987 <p>Just remember, in the end, it do not matter how redundant, or how
988 fault tolerant your storage is, if you do not continuously monitor its
989 status to detect and replace failed disks.
