  32         <p>I was surprised today to learn that a friend in academia did not
  33 know there are easily available web services available for writing
  34 LaTeX documents as a team.  I thought it was common knowledge, but to
  35 make sure at least my readers are aware of it, I would like to mention
  36 these useful services for writing LaTeX documents.  Some of them even
  37 provide a WYSIWYG editor to ease writing even further.</p>

  39 <p>There are two commercial services available,
  40 <a href="https://sharelatex.com">ShareLaTeX</a> and
  41 <a href="https://overleaf.com">Overleaf</a>.  They are very easy to
  42 use.  Just start a new document, select which publisher to write for
  43 (ie which LaTeX style to use), and start writing.  Note, these two
  44 have announced their intention to join forces, so soon it will only be
  45 one joint service.  I've used both for different documents, and they
  46 work just fine.  While
  47 <a href="https://github.com/sharelatex/sharelatex">ShareLaTeX is free
  48 software</a>, while the latter is not.  According to <a
  49 href="https://www.overleaf.com/help/17-is-overleaf-open-source">a
  50 announcement from Overleaf</a>, they plan to keep the ShareLaTeX code
  51 base maintained as free software.</p>

  53 But these two are not the only alternatives.
  54 <a href="https://app.fiduswriter.org/">Fidus Writer</a> is another free
  55 software solution with <a href="https://github.com/fiduswriter">the
  56 source available on github</a>.  I have not used it myself.  Several
  57 others can be found on the nice
  58 <a href="https://alternativeto.net/software/sharelatex/">alterntiveTo
  59 web service</a>.

  62 documents in LaTeX, you should check out these services.  You can even
  63 host your own, if you want to. :)</p>

  88         <p>Recently, I needed to automatically check the copyright status of a
  89 set of <a href="http://www.imdb.com/">The Internet Movie database
  90 (IMDB)</a> entries, to figure out which one of the movies they refer
  91 to can be freely distributed on the Internet.  This proved to be
  92 harder than it sounds.  IMDB for sure list movies without any
  93 copyright protection, where the copyright protection has expired or
  94 where the movie is lisenced using a permissive license like one from
  95 Creative Commons.  These are mixed with copyright protected movies,
  96 and there seem to be no way to separate these classes of movies using
  97 the information in IMDB.</p>

  99 <p>First I tried to look up entries manually in IMDB,
 100 <a href="https://www.wikipedia.org/">Wikipedia</a> and
 101 <a href="https://www.archive.org/">The Internet Archive</a>, to get a
 102 feel how to do this.  It is hard to know for sure using these sources,
 103 but it should be possible to be reasonable confident a movie is "out
 104 of copyright" with a few hours work per movie.  As I needed to check
 105 almost 20,000 entries, this approach was not sustainable.  I simply
 106 can not work around the clock for about 6 years to check this data
 107 set.</p>

 109 <p>I asked the people behind The Internet Archive if they could
 110 introduce a new metadata field in their metadata XML for IMDB ID, but
 111 was told that they leave it completely to the uploaders to update the
 112 metadata.  Some of the metadata entries had IMDB links in the
 113 description, but I found no way to download all metadata files in bulk
 114 to locate those ones and put that approach aside.</p>

 116 <p>In the process I noticed several Wikipedia articles about movies
 117 had links to both IMDB and The Internet Archive, and it occured to me
 118 that I could use the Wikipedia RDF data set to locate entries with
 119 both, to at least get a lower bound on the number of movies on The
 120 Internet Archive with a IMDB ID.  This is useful based on the
 121 assumption that movies distributed by The Internet Archive can be
 122 legally distributed on the Internet.  With some help from the RDF
 123 community (thank you DanC), I was able to come up with this query to
 124 pass to <a href="https://query.wikidata.org/">the SPARQL interface on
 125 Wikidata</a>:

 142 <p>If I understand the query right, for every film entry anywhere in
 143 Wikpedia, it will return the IMDB ID and The Internet Archive ID, and
 144 when the movie was released and its English title, if either or both
 145 of the latter two are available.  At the moment the result set contain
 146 2338 entries.  Of course, it depend on volunteers including both
 147 correct IMDB and The Internet Archive IDs in the wikipedia articles
 148 for the movie.  It should be noted that the result will include
 149 duplicates if the movie have entries in several languages.  There are
 150 some bogus entries, either because The Internet Archive ID contain a
 151 typo or because the movie is not available from The Internet Archive.
 152 I did not verify the IMDB IDs, as I am unsure how to do that
 153 automatically.</p>

 155 <p>I wrote a small python script to extract the data set from Wikidata
 156 and check if the XML metadata for the movie is available from The
 157 Internet Archive, and after around 1.5 hour it produced a list of 2097
 158 free movies and their IMDB ID.  In total, 171 entries in Wikidata lack
 159 the refered Internet Archive entry.  I assume the 70 "disappearing"
 160 entries (ie 2338-2097-171) are duplicate entries.</p>

 162 <p>This is not too bad, given that The Internet Archive report to
 163 contain <a href="https://archive.org/details/feature_films">5331
 164 feature films</a> at the moment, but it also mean more than 3000
 165 movies are missing on Wikipedia or are missing the pair of references
 166 on Wikipedia.</p>

 168 <p>I was curious about the distribution by release year, and made a
 169 little graph to show how the amount of free movies is spread over the

 387         <p>I find it fascinating how many of the people being locked inside
 388 the proposed border wall between USA and Mexico support the idea.  The
 389 proposal to keep Mexicans out reminds me of
 390 <a href="http://www.history.com/news/10-things-you-may-not-know-about-the-berlin-wall">the
 391 propaganda twist from the East Germany government</a> calling the wall
 392 the “Antifascist Bulwark” after erecting the Berlin Wall, claiming
 393 that the wall was erected to keep enemies from creeping into East
 394 Germany, while it was obvious to the people locked inside it that it
 395 was erected to keep the people from escaping.</p>

 398 one way wall, only keeping people on the outside from getting in,
 399 while not keeping people in the inside from getting out?</p>

 424         <p>At my nearby maker space,
 425 <a href="http://sonen.ifi.uio.no/">Sonen</a>, I heard the story that it
 426 was easier to generate gcode files for theyr 3D printers (Ultimake 2+)
 427 on Windows and MacOS X than Linux, because the software involved had
 428 to be manually compiled and set up on Linux while premade packages
 429 worked out of the box on Windows and MacOS X.  I found this annoying,
 430 as the software involved,
 431 <a href="https://github.com/Ultimaker/Cura">Cura</a>, is free software
 432 and should be trivial to get up and running on Linux if someone took
 433 the time to package it for the relevant distributions.  I even found
 434 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/706656">a request for adding into
 435 Debian</a> from 2013, which had seem some activity over the years but
 436 never resulted in the software showing up in Debian.  So a few days
 437 ago I offered my help to try to improve the situation.</p>

 439 <p>Now I am very happy to see that all the packages required by a
 440 working Cura in Debian are uploaded into Debian and waiting in the NEW
 441 queue for the ftpmasters to have a look.  You can track the progress
 442 on
 443 <a href="https://qa.debian.org/developer.php?email=3dprinter-general%40lists.alioth.debian.org">the
 444 status page for the 3D printer team</a>.</p>

 446 <p>The uploaded packages are a bit behind upstream, and was uploaded
 447 now to get slots in <a href="https://ftp-master.debian.org/new.html">the NEW
 448 queue</a> while we work up updating the packages to the latest
 449 upstream version.</p>

 451 <p>On a related note, two competitors for Cura, which I found harder
 452 to use and was unable to configure correctly for Ultimaker 2+ in the
 453 short time I spent on it, are already in Debian.  If you are looking
 454 for 3D printer "slicers" and want something already available in
 455 Debian, check out
 456 <a href="https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/slic3r">slic3r</a> and
 457 <a href="https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/slic3r-prusa">slic3r-prusa</a>.

 483         Når jeg holder på med ulike prosjekter, så trenger jeg stadig ulike
 484 skruer.  Det siste prosjektet jeg holder på med er å lage

 486 HDMI-touch-skjerm</a> som skal brukes med Raspberry Pi.  Boksen settes
 487 sammen med skruer og bolter, og jeg har vært i tvil om hvor jeg kan
 488 få tak i de riktige skruene.  Clas Ohlson og Jernia i nærheten har
 489 sjelden hatt det jeg trenger.  Men her om dagen fikk jeg et fantastisk

 497 håper de har nok kunder til å holde det gående lenge, da dette er en
 498 butikk jeg kommer til å besøke ofte.  Butikken er et funn å ha i
 499 nabolaget for oss som liker å bygge litt selv. :)</p>
