>There is a certain cross-over between the
15 <ahref=

16 project
</a
> and
<ahref=
"http://www.edubuntu.org/
">the Edubuntu
17 project
</a
>, and for example the LTSP packages in Debian are a joint
18 effort between the projects. One person with a foot in both camps is
19 Jonathan Carter, which I am now happy to present to you.
</p
>
21 <p
><strong
>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong
></p
>
23 <p
>I
'm a South-African free software geek who lives in Cape Town. My
24 days vary quite a bit since I
'm involved in too many things. As I
'm
25 getting older I
'm learning how to focus a bit more :)
</p
>
27 <p
>I
'm also an Edubuntu contributor and I love when there are
28 opportunities for the Edubuntu and Debian Edu projects to benefit from
31 <p
><strong
>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
32 project?
</strong
></p
>
34 <p
>I
've been somewhat familiar with the project before, but I think my
35 first direct exposure to the project was when I met Petter
36 [Reinholdtsen] and Knut [Yrvin] at the Edubuntu summit in
2005 in
37 London. They provided great feedback that helped the bootstrapping of
38 Edubuntu. Back then Edubuntu (and even Ubuntu) was still very new and
39 it was great getting input from people who have been around longer. I
40 was also still very excitable and said yes to everything and to this
41 day I have a big todo list backlog that I
'm catching up with. I think
42 over the years the relationship between Edubuntu and Debian-Edu has
43 been gradually improving, although I think there
's a lot that we could
44 still improve on in terms of working together on packages. I
'm sure
45 we
'll get there one day.
</p
>
47 <p
><strong
>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
48 Edu?
</strong
></p
>
50 <p
>Debian itself already has so many advantages. I could go on about
51 it for pages, but in essence I love that it
's a very honest project
52 that puts its users first with no hidden agendas and also produces
53 very high quality work.
</p
>
55 <p
>I think the advantage of Debian Edu is that it makes many common
56 set-up tasks simpler so that administrators can get up and running
57 with a lot less effort and frustration. At the same time I think it
58 helps to standardise installations in schools so that it
's easier for
59 community members and commercial suppliers to support.
</p
>
61 <p
><strong
>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
62 Edu?
</strong
></p
>
64 <p
>I had to re-type this one a few times because I
'm trying to
65 separate
"disadvantages
" from
"areas that need improvement
" (which is
66 what I originally rambled on about)
</p
>
68 <p
>The biggest disadvantage I can think of is lack of manpower. The
69 project could do so much more if there were more good contributors. I
70 think some of the problems are external too. Free software and free
71 content in education is a no-brainer but it takes some time to catch
72 on. When you
've been working with the same proprietary eco-system for
73 years and have gotten used to it, it can be hard to adjust to some
74 concepts in the free software world. It would be nice if there were
75 more Debian Edu consultants across the world. I
'd love to be one
76 myself but I
'm already so over-committed that it
's just not possible
79 <p
>I think the best short-term solution to that large-scale problem is
80 for schools to be pro-active and share their experiences and grow
81 their skills in-house. I
'm often saddened to see how much money
82 educational institutions spend on
3rd party solutions that they don
't
83 have access to after the service has ended and they could
've gotten so
84 much more value otherwise by being more self-sustainable and
87 <p
><strong
>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong
></p
>
89 <p
>My main laptop dual-boots between Debian and Windows
7. I was
90 Windows free for years but started dual-booting again last year for
91 some games which help me focus and relax (Starcraft II in
92 particular). Gaming support on Linux is improving in leaps and bounds
93 so I suppose I
'll soon be able to regain that disk space :)
</p
>
95 <p
>Besides that I rely on Icedove, Chromium, Terminator, Byobu, irssi,
96 git, Tomboy, KVM, VLC and LibreOffice. Recently I
've been torn on
97 which desktop environment I like and I
'm taking some refuge in Xfce
98 while I figure that out. I like tools that keep things simple. I enjoy
99 Python and shell scripting. I went to an Arduino workshop recently and
100 it was awesome seeing how easy and simple the IDE software was to get
101 up and running in Debian compared to the users running Windows and OS
104 <p
>I also use mc which some people frown upon slightly. I got used to
105 using Norton Commander in the early
90's and it stuck (I think the
106 people who sneer at it is just jealous that they don
't know how to use
109 <p
><strong
>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
110 get schools to use free software?
</strong
></p
>
112 <p
>I think trying to force it is unproductive. I also think that in
113 many cases it
's appropriate for schools to use non-free systems and I
114 don
't think that there
's any particular moral or ethical problem with
117 <p
>I do think though that free software can already solve so so many
118 problems in educational institutions and it
's just a shame not taking
119 advantage of that.
</p
>
121 <p
>I also think that some curricula need serious review. For example,
122 some areas of the world rely heavily on very specific versions of MS
123 Office, teaching students to parrot menu items instead of learning the
124 general concepts. I think that
's very unproductive because firstly, MS
125 Office
's interface changes drastically every few years and on top of
126 that it also locks in a generation to a product that might not be the
127 best solution for them.
</p
>
129 <p
>To answer your question, I believe that the right strategy is to
130 educate and inform, giving someone the information they require to
131 make a decision that would work for them.

140 <description><p
>When installing RedHat, Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu on some machines,
141 the screen just turn black when Linux boot, either during installation
142 or on first boot from the hard disk. I
've seen it once in a while the
143 last few years, but only recently understood the cause. I
've seen it
144 on HP laptops, and on my latest acquaintance the Packard Bell laptop.
145 The reason seem to be in the wiring of some laptops. The system to
146 control the screen background light is inverted, so when Linux try to
147 turn the brightness fully on, it end up turning it off instead. I do
148 not know which Linux drivers are affected, but this post is about the
149 i915 driver used by the

>, Thinkpad X40 and many other laptops.
</p
>
153 <p
>The problem can be worked around two ways. Either by adding
154 i915.invert_brightness=
1 as a kernel option, or by adding a file in
155 /etc/modprobe.d/ to tell modprobe to add the invert_brightness=
1
156 option when it load the i915 kernel module. On Debian and Ubuntu, it
157 can be done by running these commands as root:
</p
>
160 echo options i915 invert_brightness=
1 | tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf
161 update-initramfs -u -k all

221 sure the patch is not lost.
</p
>
223 <p
>Unfortunately, it is not enough to fix the kernel to get Laptops
224 with this problem working properly with Linux. If you use Gnome, your
225 worries should be over at this point. But if you use KDE, there is
226 something in KDE ignoring the invert_brightness setting and turning on
227 the screen during login. I
've reported it to Debian as
228 <a href=
"http://bugs.debian.org/
711237">BTS report #
711237</a
>, and
229 have no idea yet how to figure out exactly what subsystem is doing
230 this. Perhaps you can help? Perhaps you know what the Gnome
231 developers did to handle this, and this can give a clue to the KDE
232 developers? Or you know where in KDE the screen brightness is changed
233 during login? If so, please update the BTS report (or get in touch if
234 you do not know how to update BTS).

256 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
257 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
258 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
259 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
260 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
261 the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all other machines can be
262 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
263 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
264 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

>It has been a while since my last English

398 interview last November. But the developers and translators are still
399 pulling along to get the Wheezy based release out the door, and this
400 time I managed to get an interview from one of the French translators
401 in the project, Cédric Boutillier.
</p
>
403 <p
><strong
>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong
></p
>
405 <p
>I am
34 year old. I live near Paris, France. I am an assistant
406 professor in probability theory. I spend my daytime teaching
407 mathematics at the university and doing fundamental research in
408 probability in connexion with combinatorics and statistical physics.
</p
>
410 <p
>I have been involved in the Debian project for a couple of years
411 and became Debian Developer a few months ago. I am working on Ruby
412 packaging, publicity and translation.
</p
>
414 <p
><strong
>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
415 project?
</strong
></p
>
417 <p
>I came to the Debian Edu project after a call for translation of
418 <a href=
"http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Manuals
">the
419 Debian Edu manual
</a
> for the release of Debian Edu Squeeze. Since
420 then, I have been working on updating the French translation of the
423 <p
>I had the opportunity to make an installation of Debian Edu in a
424 virtual machine when I was preparing localised version of some screen
425 shots for the manual. I was amazed to see it worked out of the box and
426 how comprehensive the list of software installed by default was.
</p
>
428 <p
>What amazed me was the complete network infrastructure directly
429 ready to use, which can and the nice administration interface provided
430 by
<a href=
"https://oss.gonicus.de/labs/gosa/
">GOsa²
</a
>. What pleased
431 me also was the fact that among the software installed by default,
432 there were many
"traditional
" educative software to learn languages,
433 to count, to program... but also software to develop creativity and
434 artistic skills with music (
<a href=
"http://ardour.org/
">Ardour
</a
>,
435 <a href=
"http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
">Audacity
</a
>) and
436 movies/animation (I was especially thinking of
437 <a href=
"http://linuxstopmotion.sourceforge.net/
">Stopmotion
</a
>).
</p
>
439 <p
>I am following the development of Debian Edu and am hanging out on
440 <a href=
"irc://irc.debian.org/%
23debian-edu
">#debian-edu
</a
>.
441 Unfortunately, I don
't much time to get more involved in this
442 beautiful project.
</p
>
444 <p
><strong
>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
445 Edu?
</strong
></p
>
447 <p
>For me, the main advantages of Skolelinux/Debian Edu are its
448 community of experts and its precise documentation, as well as the
449 fact that it provides a solution ready to use.
</p
>
451 <p
>I would add also the fact that it is based on the rock solid Debian
452 distribution, which ensures stability and provides a huge collection
453 of educational free software.
</p
>
455 <p
><strong
>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
456 Edu?
</strong
></p
>
458 <p
>Maybe the lack of manpower to do lobbying on the
459 project. Sometimes, people who need to take decisions concerning IT do
460 not have all the elements to evaluate properly free software
461 solutions. The fact that support by a company may be difficult to find
462 is probably a problem if the school does not have IT personnel.
</p
>
464 <p
>One can find support from a company by looking at
465 <a href=
"http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Help/ProfessionalHelp
">the
466 wiki dokumentation
</a
>, where some countries already have a number of
467 companies providing support for Debian Edu, like Germany or
468 Norway. This list is easy to find readily from the manual. However,
469 for other countries, like France, the list is empty. I guess that
470 consultants proposing support for Debian would be able to provide some
471 support for Debian Edu as well.
</p
>
473 <p
><strong
>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong
></p
>
475 <p
>I am using the KDE Plasma Desktop. But the pieces of software I use
476 most runs in a terminal: Mutt and OfflineIMAP for emails, latex for
477 scientific documents, mpd for music. VIM is my editor of choice. I am
478 also using the mathematical software
479 <a href=
"http://www.scilab.org/en/scilab/about
">Scilab
</a
> and
480 <a href=
"http://www.sagemath.org/index.html
">Sage
</a
> (built from
481 source as not completely packaged for Debian, yet).
483 <p
><strong
>Do you have any suggestions for teachers interested in
484 using the free software in Debian to teach mathematics and
485 statistics?
</strong
></p
>
487 <p
>I do not have any
"nice
" recommendations for statistics. At our
488 university, we use both
<a href=
"http://www.r-project.org/
">R
</a
> and
489 Scilab to teach statistics and probabilistic simulations. For
490 geometry, there are nice programs:
</p
>
494 <li
><a href=
"http://www.drgeo.eu/
">drgeo
</a
> and
495 <a href=
"http://edu.kde.org/applications/all/kig

</a
> to do
496 constructions in planar geometry
498 <li
><a href=
"http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/software/download/kali.html
">kali
</a
>
499 to discover symmetry groups (the so-called wallpapers and frieze
500 groups), although the interface looks a bit old.

506 provides a uniform interface to SciLab, Sage,

509 <p
><strong

516 <li

519 well known examples like Firefox, ThunderBird and

>Two days ago, I asked

">how

741 with the obstacles put in the way of Linux users on a laptop with UEFI
742 and Windows
8.
</p
>
744 <p
>I never found out if the cause of my problems were the use of UEFI
745 secure booting or fast boot. I suspect fast boot was the problem,
746 causing the firmware to boot directly from HD without considering any
747 key presses and alternative devices, but do not know UEFI settings
748 enough to tell.
</p

750 <p
>There is no way to install Linux on the machine in question without
751 opening the box and disconnecting the hard drive! This is as far as I
752 can tell, the only way to get access to the firmware setup menu
753 without accepting the Windows
8 license agreement. I am told (and
754 found description on how to) that it is possible to configure the
755 firmware setup once booted into Windows

756 of that agreement are completely unacceptable, accepting the license
757 was never an alternative. I do not enter agreements I do not intend

761 waste many hours on this, but luckily there was a way to get it to
762 work. But I would not recommend it to anyone planning to run Linux on
763 it, and I have become sceptical to Windows
8 certified laptops. Is
764 this the way Linux will be forced out of the market place, by making
765 it close to impossible for
"normal
" users to install Linux without
766 accepting the Microsoft Windows license terms? Or at least not
767 without risking to loose the warranty?

785 <description><p
>I
've run into quite a problem the last few days. I bought three
786 new laptops for my parents and a few others. I bought Packard Bell
787 Easynote LV to run Kubuntu on and use as their home computer. But I
788 am completely unable to figure out how to install Linux on it. The
789 computer is preinstalled with Windows
8, and I suspect it uses UEFI
790 instead of a BIOS to boot.
</p
>
792 <p
>The problem is that I am unable to get it to PXE boot, and unable
793 to get it to boot the Linux installer from my USB stick. I have yet
794 to try the DVD install, and still hope it will work. when I turn on
795 the computer, there is no information on what buttons to press to get
796 the normal boot menu. I expect to get some boot menu to select PXE or
797 USB stick booting. When booting, it first ask for the language to
798 use, then for some regional settings, and finally if I will accept the
799 Windows
8 terms of use. As these terms are completely unacceptable to
800 me, I have no other choice but to turn off the computer and try again
801 to get it to boot the Linux installer.
</p
>
803 <p
>I have gathered my findings so far on a Linlap page about the
804 <a href=
"http://www.linlap.com/packard_bell_easynote_lv
">Packard Bell
805 EasyNote LV
</a
> model. If you have any idea how to get Linux
806 installed on this machine, please get in touch or update that wiki
807 page. If I can
't find a way to install Linux, I will have to return
808 the laptop to the seller and find another machine for my parents.
</p
>
810 <p
>I wonder, is this the way Linux will be forced out of the market
811 using UEFI and
"secure boot
" by making it impossible to install Linux
812 on new Laptops?

834 <p
>Jeg heter Nirosan Thiyagalingam. Jeg er
24 år og studerer
835 dataingeniør studiet ved Høgskolen i Sør Trøndelag. Interessen for
837 vært glad i å lære nye ting. Med teknologi som endres svært hurtig er
838 det alltid noe nytt å lære. Noe som igjen har gjort det svært

845 <p

861 <a href=
"http://www.raspbian.org/
">Raspian
</a
>. Dette er et
862 operativsystem basert på Debian spesiallaget for Raspberry Pi sin
863 maskinvare.
5 minutter. Ikke nok med det,
869 alt skjer helt automatisk.
873 kontorprogrammer fungerer godt. Det kan derfor konkluderes med at
874 datamaskinen er egnet for enkle oppgaver.
876 <p

886 <a href=

906 like stor grad som for eksempel
907 <a href=
"http://www.ubuntu.com
">Ubuntu
</a
> sine sider. Deres side
911 Skolelinux-prosjektet.

915 <p

<a href=

</strong
></p
>
925 <p
>Strategien som burde brukes sett fra mine øyne er
926 markedsføring. Jeg er sikker på at om flere skoler fikk et lite innsyn
927 i hvor bra Skolelinux er så ville de ikke nølt med å gå over fra noe
928 annet som koster de store summer. At skolelinux til de grader tilbyr
929 en så komplett løsning bure komme frem. Enten via reklamekampanjer
930 eller ved å sende ut folk til skoler for så å la skolenettverk
931 ansvarlige få teste ut hvordan Skolelinux fungerer i praksis.
934 betraktelig.
