</a>
32 <p>In the
<a href=
"http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu /
33 Skolelinux
</a> project, we include a post-installation test suite,
34 which check that services are running, working, and return the
35 expected results. It runs automatically just after the first boot on
36 test installations (using test ISOs), but not on production
37 installations (using non-test ISOs). It test that the LDAP service is
38 operating, Kerberos is responding, DNS is replying, file systems are
39 online resizable, etc, etc. And it check that the PXE service is
40 configured, which is the topic of this post.
</p>
42 <p>The last week I've fixed the DVD and USB stick ISOs for our Debian
43 Edu Wheezy release. These ISOs are supposed to be able to install a
44 complete system without any Internet connection, but for that to
45 happen all the needed packages need to be on them. Thanks to our test
46 suite, I discovered that we had forgotten to adjust our PXE setup to
47 cope with the new names and paths used by the netboot d-i packages.
48 When Internet connectivity was available, the installer fall back to
49 using wget to fetch d-i boot images, but when offline it require
50 working packages to get it working. And ad the packages changed name
51 from debian-installer-
6.0-netboot-$arch to
52 debian-installer-
7.0-netboot-$arch, we no longer pulled in the
53 packages during installation. Without our test suite, I suspect we
54 would never have discovered this before release. Now it is fixed
55 right after we got the ISOs operational.
</p>
57 <p>Another by-product of the test suite is that we can ask system
58 administrators with problems getting Debian Edu to work, to run the
59 test suite using
<tt>/usr/sbin/debian-edu-test-install
</tt> and see if
60 any errors are detected. This usually pinpoint the subsystem causing

89 <p>The
<a href=
"http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu and
90 Skolelinux
</a> distribution have users and contributors all around the
91 globe. And a while back, an enterprising young man showed up on
92 <a href=
"irc://irc.debian.org/%23debian-edu">our IRC channel
93 #debian-edu
</a> and started asking questions about how Debian Edu
94 worked. We answered as good as we could, and even convinced him to
95 help us with translations. And today I managed to get an interview
96 with him, to learn more about him.
</p>
98 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong></p>
100 <p>I'm a
25 year old free software enthusiast, living in Romania,
101 which is also my country of origin. Back in
2009, at a New Year's Eve
102 party, I had a very nice
<strike>beer
</strike> discussion with a
103 friend, when we realized we have no organised Debian community in our
104 country. A few days later, we put together the infrastructure for such
105 community and even gathered a nice Debian-ish crowd. Since then, I
106 began my quest as a free software hacker and activist and I am
107 constantly trying to cover as much ground as possible on that
110 <p>A few years ago I founded a small web development company, which
111 provided me the flexible schedule I needed so much for my
112 activities. For the last
13 months, I have been the Technical Director
113 of
<a href=
"http://ceata.org/">Fundația Ceata
</a>, which is a free
114 software activist organisation endorsed by the FSF and the FSFE, and
115 the only one we have in our country.
</p>
117 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
118 project?
</strong></p>
120 <p>The idea of participating in the Debian Edu project was a surprise
121 even to me, since I never used it before I began getting involved in
122 it. This year I had a great opportunity to deliver a talk on
123 educational software, and I knew immediately where to look. It was a
124 love at first sight, since I was previously involved with some of the
125 technologies the project incorporates, and I rapidly found a lot of
126 ways to contribute.
</p>
128 <p>My first contributions consisted in translating the installer and
129 configuration dialogs, then I found some bugs to squash (I still
130 haven't fixed them yet though), and I even got my eyes on some other
131 areas where I can prove myself helpful. Since the appetite for free
132 software in my country is pretty low, I'll be happy to be the first
133 one around here advocating for the project's adoption in educational
134 environments, and maybe even get my hands dirty in creating a flavour
135 for our own needs. I am not used to make very advanced plannings, so
136 from now on, time will tell what I'll be doing next, but I think I
137 have a pretty consistent starting point.
</p>
139 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux/Debian
142 <p>Not a long time ago, I was in the position of configuring and
143 maintaining a LDAP server on some Debian derivative, and I must say it
144 took me a while. A long time ago, I was maintaining a bigger
145 Samba-powered infrastructure, and I must say I spent quite a lot of
146 time on it. I have similar stories about many of the services included
147 with Skolelinux, and the main advantage I see about it is the
148 out-of-the box availability of them, making it quite competitive when
149 it comes to managing a school's network, for example.
</p>
151 <p>Of course, there is more to say about Skolelinux than the
152 availability of the software included, its flexibility in various
153 scenarios is something I can't wait to experiment "into the wild" (I
154 only played with virtual machines so far). And I am sure there is a
155 lot more I haven't discovered yet about it, being so new within the
158 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
161 <p>As usual, when it comes to Debian Blends, I see as the biggest
162 disadvantage the lack of a numerous team dedicated to the
163 project. Every day I see the same names in the changelogs, and I have
164 a constantly fear of the bus factor in this story. I'd like to see
165 Debian Edu advertised more as an entry point into the Debian
166 ecosystem, especially amongst newcomers and students. IMHO there are a
167 lot low-hanging fruits in terms of bug squashing, and enough
168 opportunities to get the feeling of the Debian Project's dynamics. Not
169 to mention it's a very fun blend to work on!
</p>
171 <p>Derived from the previous statement, is the delay in catching up
172 with the main Debian release and documentation. This is common though
173 to all blends and derivatives, but it's an issue we can all work
176 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong></p>
178 <p>I can hardly imagine myself spending a day without Vim, since my
179 daily routine covers writing code and hacking configuration files. I
180 am a fan of the Awesome window manager (but I also like the
181 Enlightenment project a lot!),
182 <a href=
"http://www.claws-mail.org/">Claws Mail
</a> due to its ease of
183 use and very configurable behaviour. Recently I fell in love with
184 <a href=
"https://launchpad.net/redshift">Redshift
</a>, which helps me
185 get through the night without headaches. Of course, there is much more
186 stuff in this bag, but I'll need a blog on my own for doing this!
</p>
188 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
189 get schools to use free software?
</strong></p>
191 <p>Well, on this field, I cannot do much more than experiment right
192 now. So, being far from having a recipe for success, I can only assume
197 <li>schools would like to get rid of proprietary software
</li>
199 <li>students will love the openness of the system, and will want to
200 experiment with it - maybe we need to harvest the native curiosity
201 of teenagers more?
</li>
203 <li>there is no "right one" when it comes to strategies, but it would
204 be useful to have some success stories published somewhere, so
205 other can get some inspiration from them (I know I'd promote
208 <li>more active promotion - talks, conferences, even small school
209 lectures can do magical things if they encounter at least one
210 person interested. Who knows who that person might be? ;-)
</li>
214 <p>I also see some problems in getting Skolelinux into schools; for
215 example, in our country we have a great deal of corruption issues, so
216 it might be hard(er) to fight against proprietary solutions. Also,
217 people who relied on commercial software for all their lives, would be
218 very hard to convert against their will.

239 <p>There is a certain cross-over between the
240 <a href=

241 project
</a> and
<a href=
"http://www.edubuntu.org/">the Edubuntu
242 project
</a>, and for example the LTSP packages in Debian are a joint
243 effort between the projects. One person with a foot in both camps is
244 Jonathan Carter, which I am now happy to present to you.
</p>
246 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong></p>
248 <p>I'm a South-African free software geek who lives in Cape Town. My
249 days vary quite a bit since I'm involved in too many things. As I'm
250 getting older I'm learning how to focus a bit more :)
</p>
252 <p>I'm also an Edubuntu contributor and I love when there are
253 opportunities for the Edubuntu and Debian Edu projects to benefit from
256 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
257 project?
</strong></p>
259 <p>I've been somewhat familiar with the project before, but I think my
260 first direct exposure to the project was when I met Petter
261 [Reinholdtsen] and Knut [Yrvin] at the Edubuntu summit in
2005 in
262 London. They provided great feedback that helped the bootstrapping of
263 Edubuntu. Back then Edubuntu (and even Ubuntu) was still very new and
264 it was great getting input from people who have been around longer. I
265 was also still very excitable and said yes to everything and to this
266 day I have a big todo list backlog that I'm catching up with. I think
267 over the years the relationship between Edubuntu and Debian-Edu has
268 been gradually improving, although I think there's a lot that we could
269 still improve on in terms of working together on packages. I'm sure
270 we'll get there one day.
</p>
272 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
275 <p>Debian itself already has so many advantages. I could go on about
276 it for pages, but in essence I love that it's a very honest project
277 that puts its users first with no hidden agendas and also produces
278 very high quality work.
</p>
280 <p>I think the advantage of Debian Edu is that it makes many common
281 set-up tasks simpler so that administrators can get up and running
282 with a lot less effort and frustration. At the same time I think it
283 helps to standardise installations in schools so that it's easier for
284 community members and commercial suppliers to support.
</p>
286 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
289 <p>I had to re-type this one a few times because I'm trying to
290 separate "disadvantages" from "areas that need improvement" (which is
291 what I originally rambled on about)
</p>
293 <p>The biggest disadvantage I can think of is lack of manpower. The
294 project could do so much more if there were more good contributors. I
295 think some of the problems are external too. Free software and free
296 content in education is a no-brainer but it takes some time to catch
297 on. When you've been working with the same proprietary eco-system for
298 years and have gotten used to it, it can be hard to adjust to some
299 concepts in the free software world. It would be nice if there were
300 more Debian Edu consultants across the world. I'd love to be one
301 myself but I'm already so over-committed that it's just not possible
304 <p>I think the best short-term solution to that large-scale problem is
305 for schools to be pro-active and share their experiences and grow
306 their skills in-house. I'm often saddened to see how much money
307 educational institutions spend on
3rd party solutions that they don't
308 have access to after the service has ended and they could've gotten so
309 much more value otherwise by being more self-sustainable and
312 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong></p>
314 <p>My main laptop dual-boots between Debian and Windows
7. I was
315 Windows free for years but started dual-booting again last year for
316 some games which help me focus and relax (Starcraft II in
317 particular). Gaming support on Linux is improving in leaps and bounds
318 so I suppose I'll soon be able to regain that disk space :)
</p>
320 <p>Besides that I rely on Icedove, Chromium, Terminator, Byobu, irssi,
321 git, Tomboy, KVM, VLC and LibreOffice. Recently I've been torn on
322 which desktop environment I like and I'm taking some refuge in Xfce
323 while I figure that out. I like tools that keep things simple. I enjoy
324 Python and shell scripting. I went to an Arduino workshop recently and
325 it was awesome seeing how easy and simple the IDE software was to get
326 up and running in Debian compared to the users running Windows and OS
329 <p>I also use mc which some people frown upon slightly. I got used to
330 using Norton Commander in the early
90's and it stuck (I think the
331 people who sneer at it is just jealous that they don't know how to use
334 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
335 get schools to use free software?
</strong></p>
337 <p>I think trying to force it is unproductive. I also think that in
338 many cases it's appropriate for schools to use non-free systems and I
339 don't think that there's any particular moral or ethical problem with
342 <p>I do think though that free software can already solve so so many
343 problems in educational institutions and it's just a shame not taking
344 advantage of that.
</p>
346 <p>I also think that some curricula need serious review. For example,
347 some areas of the world rely heavily on very specific versions of MS
348 Office, teaching students to parrot menu items instead of learning the
349 general concepts. I think that's very unproductive because firstly, MS
350 Office's interface changes drastically every few years and on top of
351 that it also locks in a generation to a product that might not be the
352 best solution for them.
</p>
354 <p>To answer your question, I believe that the right strategy is to
355 educate and inform, giving someone the information they require to
356 make a decision that would work for them.
</p>

</a>
377 <p>When installing RedHat, Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu on some machines,
378 the screen just turn black when Linux boot, either during installation
379 or on first boot from the hard disk. I've seen it once in a while the
380 last few years, but only recently understood the cause. I've seen it
381 on HP laptops, and on my latest acquaintance the Packard Bell laptop.
382 The reason seem to be in the wiring of some laptops. The system to
383 control the screen background light is inverted, so when Linux try to
384 turn the brightness fully on, it end up turning it off instead. I do
385 not know which Linux drivers are affected, but this post is about the
386 i915 driver used by the

390 <p>The problem can be worked around two ways. Either by adding
391 i915.invert_brightness=
1 as a kernel option, or by adding a file in
392 /etc/modprobe.d/ to tell modprobe to add the invert_brightness=
1
393 option when it load the i915 kernel module. On Debian and Ubuntu, it
394 can be done by running these commands as root:

466 have no idea yet how to figure out exactly what subsystem is doing
467 this. Perhaps you can help? Perhaps you know what the Gnome
468 developers did to handle this, and this can give a clue to the KDE
469 developers? Or you know where in KDE the screen brightness is changed
470 during login? If so, please update the BTS report (or get in touch if
471 you do not know how to update BTS).</p>

505 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
506 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
507 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
508 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
509 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
510 the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all other machines can be
511 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
512 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
513 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

</a>
669 <p>It has been a while since my last English
670 <a href=
"http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu and Skolelinux
</a>
671 interview last November. But the developers and translators are still
672 pulling along to get the Wheezy based release out the door, and this
673 time I managed to get an interview from one of the French translators
674 in the project, Cédric Boutillier.
</p>
676 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong></p>
678 <p>I am
34 year old. I live near Paris, France. I am an assistant
679 professor in probability theory. I spend my daytime teaching
680 mathematics at the university and doing fundamental research in
681 probability in connexion with combinatorics and statistical physics.
</p>
683 <p>I have been involved in the Debian project for a couple of years
684 and became Debian Developer a few months ago. I am working on Ruby
685 packaging, publicity and translation.
</p>
687 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
688 project?
</strong></p>
690 <p>I came to the Debian Edu project after a call for translation of
691 <a href=
"http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Manuals">the
692 Debian Edu manual
</a> for the release of Debian Edu Squeeze. Since
693 then, I have been working on updating the French translation of the
696 <p>I had the opportunity to make an installation of Debian Edu in a
697 virtual machine when I was preparing localised version of some screen
698 shots for the manual. I was amazed to see it worked out of the box and
699 how comprehensive the list of software installed by default was.
</p>
701 <p>What amazed me was the complete network infrastructure directly
702 ready to use, which can and the nice administration interface provided
703 by
<a href=
"https://oss.gonicus.de/labs/gosa/">GOsa²
</a>. What pleased
704 me also was the fact that among the software installed by default,
705 there were many "traditional" educative software to learn languages,
706 to count, to program... but also software to develop creativity and
707 artistic skills with music (
<a href=
"http://ardour.org/">Ardour
</a>,
708 <a href=
"http://audacity.sourceforge.net/">Audacity
</a>) and
709 movies/animation (I was especially thinking of
710 <a href=
"http://linuxstopmotion.sourceforge.net/">Stopmotion
</a>).
</p>
712 <p>I am following the development of Debian Edu and am hanging out on
713 <a href=
"irc://irc.debian.org/%23debian-edu">#debian-edu
</a>.
714 Unfortunately, I don't much time to get more involved in this
715 beautiful project.
</p>
717 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
720 <p>For me, the main advantages of Skolelinux/Debian Edu are its
721 community of experts and its precise documentation, as well as the
722 fact that it provides a solution ready to use.
</p>
724 <p>I would add also the fact that it is based on the rock solid Debian
725 distribution, which ensures stability and provides a huge collection
726 of educational free software.
</p>
728 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
731 <p>Maybe the lack of manpower to do lobbying on the
732 project. Sometimes, people who need to take decisions concerning IT do
733 not have all the elements to evaluate properly free software
734 solutions. The fact that support by a company may be difficult to find
735 is probably a problem if the school does not have IT personnel.
</p>
737 <p>One can find support from a company by looking at
738 <a href=
"http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Help/ProfessionalHelp">the
739 wiki dokumentation
</a>, where some countries already have a number of
740 companies providing support for Debian Edu, like Germany or
741 Norway. This list is easy to find readily from the manual. However,
742 for other countries, like France, the list is empty. I guess that
743 consultants proposing support for Debian would be able to provide some
744 support for Debian Edu as well.
</p>
746 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong></p>
748 <p>I am using the KDE Plasma Desktop. But the pieces of software I use
749 most runs in a terminal: Mutt and OfflineIMAP for emails, latex for
750 scientific documents, mpd for music. VIM is my editor of choice. I am
751 also using the mathematical software
752 <a href=
"http://www.scilab.org/en/scilab/about">Scilab
</a> and
753 <a href=
"http://www.sagemath.org/index.html">Sage
</a> (built from
754 source as not completely packaged for Debian, yet).
756 <p><strong>Do you have any suggestions for teachers interested in
757 using the free software in Debian to teach mathematics and
758 statistics?
</strong></p>
760 <p>I do not have any "nice" recommendations for statistics. At our
761 university, we use both
<a href=
"http://www.r-project.org/">R
</a> and
762 Scilab to teach statistics and probabilistic simulations. For
763 geometry, there are nice programs:
</p>
767 <li><a href=
"http://www.drgeo.eu/">drgeo
</a> and
768 <a href=
"http://edu.kde.org/applications/all/kig">kig
</a> to do
769 constructions in planar geometry
771 <li><a href=
"http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/software/download/kali.html">kali
</a>
772 to discover symmetry groups (the so-called wallpapers and frieze
773 groups), although the interface looks a bit old.
</li>
778 <a href=
"http://edu.kde.org/applications/all/cantor">cantor
</a>, which
779 provides a uniform interface to SciLab, Sage,
780 <a href=
"http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Octave">Octave
</a>, etc...
</p>
782 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
783 get schools to use free software?
</strong></p>
785 <p>My suggestions would be to
</p>
789 <li>advertise the reduction of costs when free software is used.
</li>
791 <li>communicate about the quality of free software projects, using
792 well known examples like Firefox, ThunderBird and
793 OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice.
</li>
795 <li>advertise the living and strong community around the project.
</li>
797 <li>show that it is not more difficult to use than any other
