63 several times a year. I rarely have time to read all the articles,
64 but try to at least skim through them all as there is a lot of nice
65 knowledge passed on there. I even carry the latest issue with me most
66 of the time to try to get through all the articles when I have a few
69 <p>The other day I came across a nice article titled
70 "<a href=
"https://www.usenix.org/publications/login/winter2018/oneill">The
71 Secure Socket API: TLS as an Operating System Service
</a>" with a
72 marvellous idea I hope can make it all the way into the POSIX standard.
73 The idea is as simple as it is powerful. By introducing a new
74 socket() option IPPROTO_TLS to use TLS, and a system wide service to
75 handle setting up TLS connections, one both make it trivial to add TLS
76 support to any program currently using the POSIX socket API, and gain
77 system wide control over certificates, TLS versions and encryption
78 systems used. Instead of doing this:</p>
81 int socket = socket(PF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, IPPROTO_TCP);
82 </pre></blockquote></p>
84 <p>the program code would be doing this:<p>
87 int socket = socket(PF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, IPPROTO_TLS);
88 </pre></blockquote></p>
90 <p>According to the ;login: article, converting a C program to use TLS
91 would normally modify only 5-10 lines in the code, which is amazing
92 when compared to using for example the OpenSSL API.</p>
94 <p>The project has set up the
95 <a href="https://securesocketapi.org/
">https://securesocketapi.org/</a>
96 web site to spread the idea, and the code for a kernel module and the
97 associated system daemon is available from two github repositories:
98 <a href="https://github.com/markoneill/ssa
">ssa</a> and
99 <a href="https://github.com/markoneill/ssa-daemon
">ssa-daemon</a>.
100 Unfortunately there is no explicit license information with the code,
101 so its copyright status is unclear. A
102 <a href="https://github.com/markoneill/ssa/issues/
2">request to solve
103 this</a> about it has been unsolved since 2018-08-17.</p>
105 <p>I love the idea of extending socket() to gain TLS support, and
106 understand why it is an advantage to implement this as a kernel module
107 and system wide service daemon, but can not help to think that it
108 would be a lot easier to get projects to move to this way of setting
109 up TLS if it was done with a user space approach where programs
110 wanting to use this API approach could just link with a wrapper
113 <p>I recommend you check out this simple and powerful approach to more
114 secure network connections. :)</p>

139 nordvestlandet, 91 i bergenstraktene og 180 på østlandsområdet. I
148 bak <a href="https://bompengekalkulator.no/

158 bensindrevet personbil. En kan velge takstkategori i
159 webgrensesnittet.

251 far as I can tell, so here we are… This time the announcement of a new
252 free software tool to
253 <a href="https://framagit.org/Yvan-Masson/WhosWho
">create a school year
254 book</a> triggered my interest, and I decided to learn more about its
257 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?</strong></p>
259 <p>My name is Yvan MASSON, I live in France. I have my own one person
260 business in computer services. The work consist of visiting my
261 customers (person's home, local authority, small business) to give
262 advise, install computers and software, fix issues, and provide
263 computing usage training. I spend the rest of my time enjoying my
264 family and promoting free software.</p>
266 <p><strong>What is your approach for promoting free
267 software?</strong></p>
269 <p>When I think that free software could be suitable for someone, I
270 explain what it is, with simple words, give a few known examples, and
271 explain that while there is no fee it is a viable alternative in many
272 situations. Most people are receptive when you explain how it is
273 better (I simplify arguments here, I know that it is not so simple):
274 Linux works on older hardware, there are no viruses, and the software
275 can be audited to ensure user is not spied upon. I think the most
276 important is to keep a clear but moderated speech: when you try to
277 convince too much, people feel attacked and stop listening.</p>
279 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
280 project?</strong></p>
282 <p>I can not remember how I first heard of Skolelinux / Debian Edu,
283 but probably on planet.debian.org. As I have been working for a
284 school, I have interest in this type of project.
286 <p>The school I am involved in is a school for "children" between
14
287 and
18 years old. The French government has recommended free software
288 since
2012, but they do not always use free software themselves. The
289 school computers are still using the Windows operating system, but all
290 of them have the classic set of free software: Firefox ESR,
291 LibreOffice (with the excellent extension Grammalecte that indicates
292 French grammatical errors), SumatraPDF, Audacity,
7zip, KeePass2, VLC,
295 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
298 <p>It is free software! Built on Debian, I am sure that users are not
299 spied upon, and that it can run on low end hardware. This last point
300 is very important, because we really need to improve "green IT". I do
301 not know enough about Skolelinux / Debian Edu to tell how it is better
302 than another free software solution, but what I like is the "all in
303 one" solution: everything has been thought of and prepared to ease
304 installation and usage.
</p>
306 <p>I like Free Software because I hate using something that I can not
307 understand. I do not say that I can understand everything nor that I
308 want to understand everything, but knowing that someone / some company
309 intentionally prevents me from understanding how things work is really
310 unacceptable to me.
</p>
312 <p>Secondly, and more importantly, free software is a requirement to
313 prevent abuses regarding human rights and environmental care.
314 Humanity can not rely on tools that are in the hands of small group of
317 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
320 <p>Again, I don't know this project enough. Maybe a dedicated website?
321 Debian wiki works well for documentation, but is not very appealing to
322 someone discovering the project. Also, as Skolelinux / Debian Edu uses
323 OpenLDAP, it probably means that Windows workstations cannot use
324 centralized authentication. Maybe the project could use Samba as an
325 Active Directory domain controller instead, allowing Windows desktop
326 usage when necessary.
</p>
328 <p>(Editors note: In fact Windows workstations can
329 <a href=
"https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Buster/HowTo/Samba">use
330 the centralized authentication in a Debian Edu setup
</a>, at least for
331 some versions of Windows, but the fact that this is not well known can
332 be seen as an indication of the need for better documentation and
335 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong></p>
337 <p>Nothing original: Debian testing/sid with Gnome desktop, Firefox,
338 Thunderbird, LibreOffice…
</p>
340 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
341 get schools to use free software?
</strong></p>
343 <p>Every effort to spread free software into schools is important,
344 whatever it is. But I think, at least where I live, that IT
345 professionals maintaining schools networks are still very "Microsoft
346 centric". Schools will use any working solution, but they need people
347 to install and maintain it. How to make these professionals sensitive
348 about free software and train them with solutions like Debian Edu /
349 Skolelinux is a really good question :-)

</a> about
<a href=
"https://jami.net/">the Jami communication
367 client
</a>, capable of peer-to-peer encrypted communication. It
368 handle both messages, audio and video. It uses distributed hash
369 tables instead of central infrastructure to connect its users to each
370 other, which in my book is a plus. I mentioned briefly that it could
371 also work as a SIP client, which came in handy when the higher
372 educational sector in Norway started to promote Zoom as its video
373 conferencing solution. I am reluctant to use the official Zoom client
374 software, due to their
<a href=
"https://zoom.us/terms">copyright
375 license clauses
</a> prohibiting users to reverse engineer (for example
376 to check the security) and benchmark it, and thus prefer to connect to
377 Zoom meetings with free software clients.
</p>
379 <p>Jami worked OK as a SIP client to Zoom as long as there was no
380 password set on the room. The Jami daemon leak memory like crazy
381 (approximately
1 GiB a minute) when I am connected to the video
382 conference, so I had to restart the client every
7-
10 minutes, which
383 is not a great. I tried to get other SIP Linux clients to work
384 without success, so I decided I would have to live with this wart
385 until someone managed to fix the leak in the dring code base. But
386 another problem showed up once the rooms were password protected. I
387 could not get my dial tone signaling through from Jami to Zoom, and
388 dial tone signaling is used to enter the password when connecting to
389 Zoom. I tried a lot of different permutations with my Jami and
390 Asterisk setup to try to figure out why the signaling did not get
391 through, only to finally discover that the fundamental problem seem to
392 be that Zoom is simply not able to receive dial tone signaling when
393 connecting via SIP. There seem to be nothing wrong with the Jami and
394 Asterisk end, it is simply broken in the Zoom end. I got help from a
395 very skilled VoIP engineer figuring out this last part. And being a
396 very skilled engineer, he was also able to locate a solution for me.
397 Or to be exact, a workaround that solve my initial problem of
398 connecting to password protected Zoom rooms using Jami.
</p>
400 <p>So, how do you do this, I am sure you are wondering by now. The
402 <a href=
"https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/202405539-H-323-SIP-Room-Connector-Dial-Strings#sip">documented
403 from Zoom
</a>, and it is to modify the SIP address to include the room
404 password. What is most surprising about this is that the
405 automatically generated email from Zoom with instructions on how to
406 connect via SIP do not mention this. The SIP address to use normally
407 consist of the room ID (a number), an @ character and the IP address
408 of the Zoom SIP gateway. But Zoom understand a lot more than just the
409 room ID in front of the at sign. The format is "
<tt>[Meeting
410 ID].[Password].[Layout].[Host Key]
</tt>", and you can hear see how you
411 can both enter password, control the layout (full screen, active
412 presence and gallery) and specify the host key to start the meeting.
413 The full SIP address entered into Jami to provide the password will
414 then look like this (all using made up numbers):</p>
417 <tt>sip:657837644.522827@192.168.169.170</tt>
420 <p>Now if only jami would reduce its memory usage, I could even
421 recommend this setup to others. :)</p>

444 and a few days later it was reported that
445 <a href="https://onezero.medium.com/ibm-rallies-cobol-engineers-to-save-overloaded-unemployment-systems-eeadf13eddce
">IBM
446 tried to locate COBOL programmers</a>.</p>
448 <p>I thus decided to have a look at free software alternatives to
449 learn COBOL, and had the pleasure to find
450 <a href="https://sourceforge.net/projects/open-cobol/
">GnuCOBOL</a> was
451 already <a href="https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/gnucobol
">in
452 Debian</a>. It used to be called Open Cobol, and is a "compiler"
453 transforming COBOL code to C or C++ before giving it to GCC or Visual
454 Studio to build binaries.
</p>
456 <p>I managed to get in touch with upstream, and was impressed with the
457 quick response, and also was happy to see a new Debian maintainer
458 taking over when the original one recently asked to be replaced. A
459 new Debian upload was done as recently as yesterday.
</p>
461 <p>Using the Debian package, I was able to follow a simple COBOL
462 introduction and make and run simple COBOL programs. It was fun to
463 learn a new programming language. If you want to test for yourself,
464 <a href=
"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GnuCOBOL">the GnuCOBOL Wikipedia
465 page
</a> have a few simple examples to get you startet.
</p>
467 <p>As I do not have much experience with COBOL, I do not know how
468 standard compliant it is, but it claim to pass most tests from COBOL
469 test suite, which sound good to me. It is nice to know it is possible
470 to learn COBOL using software without any usage restrictions, and I am
471 very happy such nice free software project as this is available. If
472 you as me is curious about COBOL, check it out.
