11
My debian sponsoring preferences

 13
I am willing to sponsor packages, but generally not willing to take

14 over the maintenence. I've got too many other things going on, so I

15 would do a bad job if I tried to maintain more packages.

 17
When sponsoring, I prefer being approached by the package

18 maintainer on IRC (pere on irc.debian.org and irc.oftc.net) with the

19 URL to where the package can be downloaded. I prefer an URL to a .dsc

20 file to pass to dget. This is a low-overhead solution to me, and I do

21 not accumulate a large backlog of request for sponsoring (as would

22 happen if I tried to gather sponsor request using email. :).

 24
The packages should be lintian clean and tested in pbuilder or

25 similar, to make sure the dependencies are correct and obvious

26 problems are found. I primarily sponsor packages going into

27 debian/main, so if the package isn't acceptable for main, there is

28 normally no need to approach me.

 30
I find it best to hear directly from the person planning on

31 maintaining the package, to be able to ask how much time the

32 prospective maintainer plan to spend on the package, as well as work

33 out issues with the package directly.

 35
When I sponsor packages, I add a line 'Upload sponsored by Petter

36 Reinholdtsen' to the debian changelog to document the fact to the next

 37 sponsor of the package.
