  58 gang med å samle inn sine 5000 underskrifter</a> for å få registrert
  59 seg som parti til neste års stortingsvalg.  Initiativet ble
  60 <a href="http://www.digi.no/897296/piratene-vil-innta-stortinget">annonsert
  61 i sommer</a>, og har nå kommet så langt at det er på tide å signere
  62 (på papir, med penn og frimerke for innsending. :).</p>

  64 <p>Dagens partier har i stor grad spilt fallitt på det digitale
  65 området, så jeg er positiv til at det kommer en ny aktør på området
  66 som kan ruske opp litt i gamle strukturer og holdninger, og

 123       <div class="body"><p>In my spare time, I currently work on a Norwegian
 124 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> version of the 2004 book
 125 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> by Lawrence Lessig,
 126 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright law
 127 I can give to my parents and others that are reluctant to read an
 128 English book.  It is a marvellous set of examples on how the ever
 129 expanding copyright regulations hurt culture and society.  When the
 130 translation is done, I hope to find funding to print and ship a copy
 131 to all the members of the Norwegian parliament, before they sit down
 132 to debate the latest revisions to the Norwegian copyright law.  This
 133 summer I
 134 <a href="http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Dugnad_for___sende_norsk_versjon_av_Free_Culture_til_stortingets_representanter_.html">called
 135 for volunteers</a> to help me, and I have been able to secure the
 136 valuable contribution from at least one other Norwegian.</p>

 138 <p>Two days ago, we finally broke the 50% mark.  Then more than 50% of
 139 the number of strings to translate (normally paragraphs, but also
 140 titles and index entries are also counted).  All parts from the
 141 beginning up to and including chapter four is translated.  So is
 142 chapters six, seven and the conclusion.  I created a graph to show the
 143 progress:</p>

 148 entries into the docbook.  They were missing with the docbook version
 149 I initially started with.  There are still quite a few index entries
 150 missing, but everyone starting with A, B, O, Z and Y are done.  I
 151 currently focus on completing the index entries, to get a complete
 152 english version of the docbook source.</p>

 154 <p>There is still need for translators and people with docbook
 155 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
 156 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
 157 translation and proof reading.  And I would like the figures to be
 158 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them.  Any SVG master
 159 around?  I am sure there are some legal terms that are unfamiliar to

 272       <div class="body"><p>In <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> one can specify
 273 the language used at the top, and the processing pipeline will use
 274 this information to pick the correct translations for 'chapter', 'see
 275 also', 'index' etc.  And for most languages used with docbook, I guess
 276 this work just fine.  For example a German user can start the document
 277 with &lt;book lang="de"&gt;, and the document will show up with the
 278 correct content with any of the docbook processors.  This is not the
 279 case for the language
 280 <a href="http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Free_Culture_in_Norwegian___5_chapters_done__74_percent_left_to_do.html">I
 281 am working with at the moment</a>, Norwegian Bokmål.</p>
 282
 283 <p>For a while, I was confused about which language code to use,
 284 because I was unable to find any language code that would work across
 285 all tools.  I am currently testing dblatex, xmlto, docbook-xsl, and
 286 dbtoepub, and they do not handle Norwegian Bokmål the same way.  Some
 287 of them do not handle it at all.</p>
 288
 289 <p>A bit of background information is probably needed to understand
 290 this mess.  Norwegian is not one, but two written variants.  The
 291 variants are Norwegian Nynorsk and Norwegian Bokmål.  There are three
 292 two letter language codes associated with these languages, Norwegian
 293 is 'no', Norwegian Nynorsk is 'nn' and Norwegian Bokmål is 'nb'.
 294 Historically the 'no' language code was used for Norwegian Bokmål, but
 295 many years ago this was found to be å bad idea, and the recommendation
 296 is to use the most specific language code instead, to avoid confusion.
 297 In the transition period it is a good idea to make sure 'no' was an
 298 alias for 'nb'.</p>

 300 <p>Back to docbook processing tools in Debian.  The dblatex tool only
 301 understand 'nn'.  There are translations for 'no', but not 'nb' (BTS
 302 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/684391">#684391</a>), but due to a bug
 303 (BTS <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/682936">#682936</a>) the 'no'
 304 language code is not recognised.  The docbook-xsl tool chain only
 305 recognise 'nn' and 'nb', but not 'no'.  The xmlto tool only recognise
 306 'nn' and 'nb', but not 'no'.  The end result that there is no language
 307 code I can use to get the docbook file working with all of these tools
 308 at the same time. :(</p>

 310 <p>The correct solution is to use &lt;book lang="nb"&gt;, but it will
 311 take time before that will work with all the free software docbook
 312 processors. :(</p>

 337 <p>I am quite new to docbook processing, and am climbing a steep
 338 learning curve at the moment.</p>

 340 <p>To give you some background, I am working on a Norwegian
 341 translation of the book Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig, and I use
 342 docbook to handle the process.  The files to build the book are

 345 The book got around 400 pages with parts, images, footnotes, tables,
 346 index entries etc, which has proven to be a challenge for the free
 347 software docbook processors.  My build platform is Debian GNU/Linux
 348 Squeeze.</p>

 351 tried different tool chains to do the conversion from docbook to these

 405 høring gående</a> om ny versjon av statens standardkatalog, med frist
 406 2012-09-30, der det foreslås å fjerne ODF fra katalogen og ta inn ISO
 407 OOXML.  I den anledning minnes jeg
 408 <a href="http://www.regjeringen.no/upload/FAD/Vedlegg/IKT-politikk/Refkat_v2.pdf">notatet
 409 FAD skrev</a> da versjon 2 av standardkatalogen var under
 410 utarbeidelse, da FAD og DIFI fortsatt forsto poenget med og verdien av
 411 frie og åpne standarder.</p>

 413 <p>Det er mange som tror at OOXML er ett spesifikt format, men det
 414 brukes ofte som fellesbetegnelse for både formatet spesifisert av
 415 ECMA, ISO, og formatet produsert av Microsoft Office (aka docx), som

 417 støtte for docx-formatet i KDE fikk jeg høre at ISO-spesifikasjonen
 418 var en nyttig referanse, men at det var mange avvik som gjorde at en
 419 ikke kunne gå ut ifra at Microsoft Office produserte dokumenter i
 420 henhold til ISO-spesifikasjonen.</p>

 453 <a href="http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Dugnad_for___sende_norsk_versjon_av_Free_Culture_til_stortingets_representanter_.html">a
 454 norwegian version</a> of the book
 455 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> by Lawrence Lessig.
 456 Progress is good, and yesterday I got a major contribution from Anders
 457 Hagen Jarmund completing chapter six.  The source files as well as a
 458 PDF and EPUB version of this book are available from
 459 <a href="https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/free-culture-lessig">github</a>.</p>

 461 <p>I am happy to report that the draft for the first two chapters
 462 (preface, introduction) is complete, and three other chapters are also
 463 completely translated.  This completes 26 percent of the number of
 464 strings (equivalent to paragraphs) in the book, and there is thus 74
 465 percent left to translate.  A graph of the progress is present at the
 466 bottom of the github project page.  There is still room for more
 467 contributors.  Get in touch or send github pull requests with fixes if
 468 you got time and are willing to help make this book make it to
 469 print. :)</p>

 471 <p>The book translation framework could also be a good basis for other
 472 translations, if you want the book to be available in your
 473 language.</p>
