>About Debian Edu and Skolelinux
</p
>
152 <p
>Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
153 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
154 configured school network. Immediately after installation a school
155 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
156 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
157 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
158 initial installation of the main server from CD or USB stick all other
159 machines can be installed via the network. The provided school server
160 provides LDAP database and Kerberos authentication service,
161 centralized home directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other
162 services. The desktop contains more than
60 educational software
163 packages and more are available from the Debian archive, and schools
164 can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE and Xfce desktop environment.
</p
>
166 <p
>This is the seventh test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
167 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
168 Squeeze release.
</p
>
170 <p
>Notes for upgrades from Alpha Prereleases
</p
>
172 <p
>Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
173 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
174 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
175 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (
1) Keep
176 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined on the mailing list. (
2)
177 Accept the new version of gosa.conf and replace both contained admin
178 password placeholders with the password hashes found in the old one
179 (backup copy!). In both cases all users need to change their password
180 to make sure a password is set for CIFS access to their home

195 <description><p
>I was introduced to the
196 <a href=
"http://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/
">Freedombox project
</a
>
197 in
2010, when Eben Moglen presented his vision about serving the need
198 of non-technical people to keep their personal information private and
199 within the legal protection of their own homes. The idea is to give
200 people back the power over their network and machines, and return
201 Internet back to its intended peer-to-peer architecture. Instead of
202 depending on a central service, the Freedombox will give everyone
203 control over their own basic infrastructure.
</p
>
205 <p
>I
've intended to join the effort since then, but other tasks have
206 taken priority. But this summers nasty news about the misuse of trust
207 and privilege exercised by the
"western
" intelligence gathering
208 communities increased my eagerness to contribute to a point where I
209 actually started working on the project a while back.
</p
>
211 <p
>The
<a href=
"https://alioth.debian.org/projects/freedombox/
">initial
212 Debian initiative
</a
> based on the vision from Eben Moglen, is to
213 create a simple and cheap Debian based appliance that anyone can hook
214 up in their home and get access to secure and private services and
215 communication. The initial deployment platform have been the
216 <a href=
"http://www.globalscaletechnologies.com/t-dreamplugdetails.aspx
">Dreamplug
</a
>,
217 which is a piece of hardware I do not own. So to be able to test what
218 the current Freedombox setup look like, I had to come up with a way to install
219 it on some hardware I do have access to. I have rewritten the
220 <a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/freedom-maker
">freedom-maker
</a
>
221 image build framework to use .deb packages instead of only copying
222 setup into the boot images, and thanks to this rewrite I am able to
223 set up any machine supported by Debian Wheezy as a Freedombox, using
224 the previously mentioned deb (and a few support debs for packages
225 missing in Debian).
</p
>
227 <p
>The current Freedombox setup consist of a set of bootstrapping
229 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/freedombox-setup
">freedombox-setup
</a
>),
230 and a administrative web interface
231 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/Plinth
">plinth
</a
> + exmachina +
232 withsqlite), as well as a privacy enhancing proxy based on
233 <a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/privoxy
">privoxy
</a
>
234 (freedombox-privoxy). There is also a web/javascript based XMPP
235 client (
<a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/jwchat
">jwchat
</a
>)
236 trying (unsuccessfully so far) to talk to the XMPP server
237 (
<a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/ejabberd
">ejabberd
</a
>). The
238 web interface is pluggable, and the goal is to use it to enable OpenID
239 services, mesh network connectivity, use of TOR, etc, etc. Not much of
240 this is really working yet, see
241 <a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/freedombox-todos/blob/master/TODO
">the
242 project TODO
</a
> for links to GIT repositories. Most of the code is
243 on github at the moment. The HTTP proxy is operational out of the
244 box, and the admin web interface can be used to add/remove plinth
245 users. I
've not been able to do anything else with it so far, but
246 know there are several branches spread around github and other places
247 with lots of half baked features.
</p
>

>I
332 <a href=
"http://beta.holderdeord.no/issues/innfore-datalagringsdirektivet
">Datalagringsdirektivet
333 (DLD)
</a
>, og innebærer at alle innbyggerne og andre innenfor Norges

346 <p
>Hva er problemet, tenkter du kanskje? Et åpenbart problem er at
347 medienes kildevern i praksis blir radert ut.

360 Arbeiderpartiet. Og både Høyre og Arbeiderpartiet i Oslo har
361 DLD-forkjempere på toppen av sine lister (har ikke sjekket de andre
362 fylkene). Det er dermed helt uaktuelt for meg å stemme på disse
363 partiene. Her er oversikten over partienes valglister i Oslo, med

">Debian Edu, also known as
615 Skolelinux
</a
>, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
616 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
617 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
618 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
619 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
620 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
621 the main server from CD or USB stick all other machines can be
622 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
623 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
624 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

631 <p
>This is the sixth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically this
632 is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the Squeeze
635 <p
>ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
636 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
637 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
638 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (
1) Keep
639 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined
640 <a href=
"http://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/

">on
641 the mailing list
</a
>. (
2) Accept the new version of gosa.conf and
642 replace both contained admin password placeholders with the password
643 hashes found in the old one (backup copy!). In both cases every user
644 need to change their their password to make sure a password is set for
645 CIFS access to their home directory.

746 (aka Intel SATA Solid-State Drive Firmware Update Tool) which
747 according to the site should contain the latest firmware for SSD
748 disks. I inserted the broken disk in one of my spare laptops and
749 booted the ISO from a USB stick. The disk was recognized, but the
750 program claimed the newest firmware already were installed and refused
751 to insert any Intel firmware. So no change, and the disk is still
752 unable to handle write load. :( I guess the only way to get them
753 working would be if Lenovo releases new firmware. No idea how likely
754 that is. Anyway, just blogging about this test for completeness. I
755 got a working Samsung disk, and see no point in spending more time on
756 the broken disks.

>It has been a while since my last update. Since last summer, I
766 have worked on a Norwegian

2004 book

769 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
770 law. Yesterday, I finally broken the
90% mark, when counting the
771 number of strings to translate. Due to real life constraints, I have
772 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
773 I found time to work on it again. Still lots of work left, but the
774 first draft is nearing completion. I created a graph to show the
775 progress of the translation:

779 <p
>When the first draft is done, the translated text need to be
780 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG
781 drawings need to be fixed. There are probably also some index entries
782 missing that need to be added. This can be done by comparing the
783 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
784 English docbook version with the paper version. Last, the colophon
785 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
786 done. I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
787 of the index pages. All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
788 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
789 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.
</p
>
791 <p
>There is still need for translators and people with docbook
792 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
793 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
794 translation and proof reading. And I would like the figures to be
795 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them. Any SVG master
796 around? There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.

</a
>, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
830 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
831 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
832 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
833 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
834 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
835 the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all other machines can be
836 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
837 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
838 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

949 <description><p
>Today I switched to
950 <a href=
"http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/The_Thinkpad_is_dead__long_live_the_Thinkpad_X230_.html
">my
951 new laptop
</a
>. I
've previously written about the problems I had with
952 my new Thinkpad X230, which was delivered with an
953 <a href=
"http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Intel_SSD_520_Series_180_GB_with_Lenovo_firmware_still_lock_up_from_sustained_writes.html
">180
954 GB Intel SSD disk with Lenovo firmware
</a
> that did not handle
955 sustained writes. My hardware supplier have been very forthcoming in
956 trying to find a solution, and after first trying with another
957 identical
180 GB disks they decided to send me a
256 GB Samsung SSD
958 disk instead to fix it once and for all. The Samsung disk survived
959 the installation of Debian with encrypted disks (filling the disk with
960 random data during installation killed the first two), and I thus
961 decided to trust it with my data. I have installed it as a Debian Edu
962 Wheezy roaming workstation hooked up with my Debian Edu Squeeze main
963 server at home using Kerberos and LDAP, and will use it as my work
964 station from now on.
</p
>
966 <p
>As this is a solid state disk with no moving parts, I believe the
967 Debian Wheezy default installation need to be tuned a bit to increase
968 performance and increase life time of the disk. The Linux kernel and
969 user space applications do not yet adjust automatically to such
970 environment. To make it easier for my self, I created a draft Debian
971 package
<tt
>ssd-setup
</tt
> to handle this tuning. The
972 <a href=
"http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=collab-maint/ssd-setup.git
">source
973 for the ssd-setup package
</a
> is available from collab-maint, and it
974 is set up to adjust the setup of the machine by just installing the
975 package. If there is any non-SSD disk in the machine, the package
976 will refuse to install, as I did not try to write any logic to sort
977 file systems in SSD and non-SSD file systems.
</p
>
979 <p
>I consider the package a draft, as I am a bit unsure how to best
980 set up Debian Wheezy with an SSD. It is adjusted to my use case,
981 where I set up the machine with one large encrypted partition (in
982 addition to /boot), put LVM on top of this and set up partitions on
983 top of this again. See the README file in the package source for the
984 references I used to pick the settings. At the moment these
985 parameters are tuned:
</p
>
989 <li
>Set up cryptsetup to pass TRIM commands to the physical disk
990 (adding discard to /etc/crypttab)
</li
>
992 <li
>Set up LVM to pass on TRIM commands to the underlying device (in
993 this case a cryptsetup partition) by changing issue_discards from
994 0 to
1 in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf.
</li
>
996 <li
>Set relatime as a file system option for ext3 and ext4 file
999 <li
>Tell swap to use TRIM commands by adding
'discard
' to
1000 /etc/fstab.
</li
>
1002 <li
>Change I/O scheduler from cfq to deadline using a udev rule.
</li
>
1004 <li
>Run fstrim on every ext3 and ext4 file system every night (from
1005 cron.daily).
</li
>
1007 <li
>Adjust sysctl values vm.swappiness to
1 and vm.vfs_cache_pressure
1008 to
50 to reduce the kernel eagerness to swap out processes.
</li
>
1012 <p
>During installation, I cancelled the part where the installer fill
1013 the disk with random data, as this would kill the SSD performance for
1014 little gain. My goal with the encrypted file system is to ensure
1015 those stealing my laptop end up with a brick and not a working
1016 computer. I have no hope in keeping the really resourceful people
1017 from getting the data on the disk (see
1018 <a href=
"http://xkcd.com/
538/
">XKCD #
538</a
> for an explanation why).
1019 Thus I concluded that adding the discard option to crypttab is the
1020 right thing to do.
</p
>
1022 <p
>I considered using the noop I/O scheduler, as several recommended
1023 it for SSD, but others recommended deadline and a benchmark I found
1024 indicated that deadline might be better for interactive use.
</p
>
1026 <p
>I also considered using the
'discard
' file system option for ext3
1027 and ext4, but read that it would give a performance hit ever time a
1028 file is removed, and thought it best to that that slowdown once a day
1029 instead of during my work.
</p
>
1031 <p
>My package do not set up tmpfs on /var/run, /var/lock and /tmp, as
1032 this is already done by Debian Edu.
</p
>
1034 <p
>I have not yet started on the user space tuning. I expect
1035 iceweasel need some tuning, and perhaps other applications too, but
1036 have not yet had time to investigate those parts.
</p
>
1038 <p
>The package should work on Ubuntu too, but I have not yet tested it
1041 <p
>As for the answer to the question in the title of this blog post,
1042 as far as I know, the only solution I know about is to replace the
1043 disk. It might be possible to flash it with Intel firmware instead of
1044 the Lenovo firmware. But I have not tried and did not want to do so
1045 without approval from Lenovo as I wanted to keep the warranty on the
1046 disk until a solution was found and they wanted the broken disks

1061 <a href=

1062 replacement disk to try to fix the problem. They decided to send an
1063 identical model, so my hopes for a permanent fix was slim.
</p
>
1065 <p
>Anyway, today I got the replacement disk and tried to install
1066 Debian Edu Wheezy with encrypted disk on it. The new disk have the
1067 same firmware version as the original. This time my hope raised
1068 slightly as the installation progressed, as the original disk used to

20%,
40% and even past
