152 worked. We answered as good as we could, and even convinced him to
153 help us with translations. And today I managed to get an interview
154 with him, to learn more about him.
</p>
156 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong></p>
158 <p>I'm a
25 year old free software enthusiast, living in Romania,
159 which is also my country of origin. Back in
2009, at a New Year's Eve
160 party, I had a very nice
<strike>beer
</strike> discussion with a
161 friend, when we realized we have no organised Debian community in our
162 country. A few days later, we put together the infrastructure for such
163 community and even gathered a nice Debian-ish crowd. Since then, I
164 began my quest as a free software hacker and activist and I am
165 constantly trying to cover as much ground as possible on that
168 <p>A few years ago I founded a small web development company, which
169 provided me the flexible schedule I needed so much for my
170 activities. For the last
13 months, I have been the Technical Director
171 of
<a href=
"http://ceata.org/">Fundația Ceata
</a>, which is a free
172 software activist organisation endorsed by the FSF and the FSFE, and
173 the only one we have in our country.
</p>
175 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
176 project?
</strong></p>
178 <p>The idea of participating in the Debian Edu project was a surprise
179 even to me, since I never used it before I began getting involved in
180 it. This year I had a great opportunity to deliver a talk on
181 educational software, and I knew immediately where to look. It was a
182 love at first sight, since I was previously involved with some of the
183 technologies the project incorporates, and I rapidly found a lot of
184 ways to contribute.
</p>
186 <p>My first contributions consisted in translating the installer and
187 configuration dialogs, then I found some bugs to squash (I still
188 haven't fixed them yet though), and I even got my eyes on some other
189 areas where I can prove myself helpful. Since the appetite for free
190 software in my country is pretty low, I'll be happy to be the first
191 one around here advocating for the project's adoption in educational
192 environments, and maybe even get my hands dirty in creating a flavour
193 for our own needs. I am not used to make very advanced plannings, so
194 from now on, time will tell what I'll be doing next, but I think I
195 have a pretty consistent starting point.
</p>
197 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux/Debian
200 <p>Not a long time ago, I was in the position of configuring and
201 maintaining a LDAP server on some Debian derivative, and I must say it
202 took me a while. A long time ago, I was maintaining a bigger
203 Samba-powered infrastructure, and I must say I spent quite a lot of
204 time on it. I have similar stories about many of the services included
205 with Skolelinux, and the main advantage I see about it is the
206 out-of-the box availability of them, making it quite competitive when
207 it comes to managing a school's network, for example.
</p>
209 <p>Of course, there is more to say about Skolelinux than the
210 availability of the software included, its flexibility in various
211 scenarios is something I can't wait to experiment "into the wild" (I
212 only played with virtual machines so far). And I am sure there is a
213 lot more I haven't discovered yet about it, being so new within the
216 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
219 <p>As usual, when it comes to Debian Blends, I see as the biggest
220 disadvantage the lack of a numerous team dedicated to the
221 project. Every day I see the same names in the changelogs, and I have
222 a constantly fear of the bus factor in this story. I'd like to see
223 Debian Edu advertised more as an entry point into the Debian
224 ecosystem, especially amongst newcomers and students. IMHO there are a
225 lot low-hanging fruits in terms of bug squashing, and enough
226 opportunities to get the feeling of the Debian Project's dynamics. Not
227 to mention it's a very fun blend to work on!
</p>
229 <p>Derived from the previous statement, is the delay in catching up
230 with the main Debian release and documentation. This is common though
231 to all blends and derivatives, but it's an issue we can all work
234 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong></p>
236 <p>I can hardly imagine myself spending a day without Vim, since my
237 daily routine covers writing code and hacking configuration files. I
238 am a fan of the Awesome window manager (but I also like the
239 Enlightenment project a lot!),
240 <a href=
"http://www.claws-mail.org/">Claws Mail
</a> due to its ease of
241 use and very configurable behaviour. Recently I fell in love with
242 <a href=
"https://launchpad.net/redshift">Redshift
</a>, which helps me
243 get through the night without headaches. Of course, there is much more
244 stuff in this bag, but I'll need a blog on my own for doing this!
</p>
246 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
247 get schools to use free software?
</strong></p>
249 <p>Well, on this field, I cannot do much more than experiment right
250 now. So, being far from having a recipe for success, I can only assume
255 <li>schools would like to get rid of proprietary software
</li>
257 <li>students will love the openness of the system, and will want to
258 experiment with it - maybe we need to harvest the native curiosity
259 of teenagers more?
</li>
261 <li>there is no "right one" when it comes to strategies, but it would
262 be useful to have some success stories published somewhere, so
263 other can get some inspiration from them (I know I'd promote
266 <li>more active promotion - talks, conferences, even small school
267 lectures can do magical things if they encounter at least one
268 person interested. Who knows who that person might be? ;-)
</li>
272 <p>I also see some problems in getting Skolelinux into schools; for
273 example, in our country we have a great deal of corruption issues, so
274 it might be hard(er) to fight against proprietary solutions. Also,
275 people who relied on commercial software for all their lives, would be
276 very hard to convert against their will.

296 Jonathan Carter, which I am now happy to present to you.
</p>
298 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong></p>
300 <p>I'm a South-African free software geek who lives in Cape Town. My
301 days vary quite a bit since I'm involved in too many things. As I'm
302 getting older I'm learning how to focus a bit more :)
</p>
304 <p>I'm also an Edubuntu contributor and I love when there are
305 opportunities for the Edubuntu and Debian Edu projects to benefit from
308 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
309 project?
</strong></p>
311 <p>I've been somewhat familiar with the project before, but I think my
312 first direct exposure to the project was when I met Petter
313 [Reinholdtsen] and Knut [Yrvin] at the Edubuntu summit in
2005 in
314 London. They provided great feedback that helped the bootstrapping of
315 Edubuntu. Back then Edubuntu (and even Ubuntu) was still very new and
316 it was great getting input from people who have been around longer. I
317 was also still very excitable and said yes to everything and to this
318 day I have a big todo list backlog that I'm catching up with. I think
319 over the years the relationship between Edubuntu and Debian-Edu has
320 been gradually improving, although I think there's a lot that we could
321 still improve on in terms of working together on packages. I'm sure
322 we'll get there one day.
</p>
324 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
327 <p>Debian itself already has so many advantages. I could go on about
328 it for pages, but in essence I love that it's a very honest project
329 that puts its users first with no hidden agendas and also produces
330 very high quality work.
</p>
332 <p>I think the advantage of Debian Edu is that it makes many common
333 set-up tasks simpler so that administrators can get up and running
334 with a lot less effort and frustration. At the same time I think it
335 helps to standardise installations in schools so that it's easier for
336 community members and commercial suppliers to support.
</p>
338 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
341 <p>I had to re-type this one a few times because I'm trying to
342 separate "disadvantages" from "areas that need improvement" (which is
343 what I originally rambled on about)
</p>
345 <p>The biggest disadvantage I can think of is lack of manpower. The
346 project could do so much more if there were more good contributors. I
347 think some of the problems are external too. Free software and free
348 content in education is a no-brainer but it takes some time to catch
349 on. When you've been working with the same proprietary eco-system for
350 years and have gotten used to it, it can be hard to adjust to some
351 concepts in the free software world. It would be nice if there were
352 more Debian Edu consultants across the world. I'd love to be one
353 myself but I'm already so over-committed that it's just not possible
356 <p>I think the best short-term solution to that large-scale problem is
357 for schools to be pro-active and share their experiences and grow
358 their skills in-house. I'm often saddened to see how much money
359 educational institutions spend on
3rd party solutions that they don't
360 have access to after the service has ended and they could've gotten so
361 much more value otherwise by being more self-sustainable and
364 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong></p>
366 <p>My main laptop dual-boots between Debian and Windows
7. I was
367 Windows free for years but started dual-booting again last year for
368 some games which help me focus and relax (Starcraft II in
369 particular). Gaming support on Linux is improving in leaps and bounds
370 so I suppose I'll soon be able to regain that disk space :)
</p>
372 <p>Besides that I rely on Icedove, Chromium, Terminator, Byobu, irssi,
373 git, Tomboy, KVM, VLC and LibreOffice. Recently I've been torn on
374 which desktop environment I like and I'm taking some refuge in Xfce
375 while I figure that out. I like tools that keep things simple. I enjoy
376 Python and shell scripting. I went to an Arduino workshop recently and
377 it was awesome seeing how easy and simple the IDE software was to get
378 up and running in Debian compared to the users running Windows and OS
381 <p>I also use mc which some people frown upon slightly. I got used to
382 using Norton Commander in the early
90's and it stuck (I think the
383 people who sneer at it is just jealous that they don't know how to use
386 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
387 get schools to use free software?
</strong></p>
389 <p>I think trying to force it is unproductive. I also think that in
390 many cases it's appropriate for schools to use non-free systems and I
391 don't think that there's any particular moral or ethical problem with
394 <p>I do think though that free software can already solve so so many
395 problems in educational institutions and it's just a shame not taking
396 advantage of that.
</p>
398 <p>I also think that some curricula need serious review. For example,
399 some areas of the world rely heavily on very specific versions of MS
400 Office, teaching students to parrot menu items instead of learning the
401 general concepts. I think that's very unproductive because firstly, MS
402 Office's interface changes drastically every few years and on top of
403 that it also locks in a generation to a product that might not be the
404 best solution for them.
</p>
406 <p>To answer your question, I believe that the right strategy is to
407 educate and inform, giving someone the information they require to
408 make a decision that would work for them.
</p>

428 The reason seem to be in the wiring of some laptops. The system to

508 worries should be over at this point. But if you use KDE, there is
509 something in KDE ignoring the invert_brightness setting and turning on
510 the screen during login. I've reported it to Debian as
511 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/

512 have no idea yet how to figure out exactly what subsystem is doing
513 this. Perhaps you can help? Perhaps you know what the Gnome
514 developers did to handle this, and this can give a clue to the KDE
515 developers? Or you know where in KDE the screen brightness is changed
516 during login? If so, please update the BTS report (or get in touch if
517 you do not know how to update BTS).</p>

</strong></p>
543 <p><a href=
"http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu, also known as
544 Skolelinux
</a>, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
545 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
546 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
547 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
548 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
549 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
550 the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all other machines can be
551 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
552 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
553 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

699 interview last November. But the developers and translators are still
700 pulling along to get the Wheezy based release out the door, and this
701 time I managed to get an interview from one of the French translators
702 in the project, Cédric Boutillier.
</p>
704 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong></p>
706 <p>I am
34 year old. I live near Paris, France. I am an assistant
707 professor in probability theory. I spend my daytime teaching
708 mathematics at the university and doing fundamental research in
709 probability in connexion with combinatorics and statistical physics.
</p>
711 <p>I have been involved in the Debian project for a couple of years
712 and became Debian Developer a few months ago. I am working on Ruby
713 packaging, publicity and translation.
</p>
715 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
716 project?
</strong></p>
718 <p>I came to the Debian Edu project after a call for translation of
719 <a href=
"http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Manuals">the
720 Debian Edu manual
</a> for the release of Debian Edu Squeeze. Since
721 then, I have been working on updating the French translation of the
724 <p>I had the opportunity to make an installation of Debian Edu in a
725 virtual machine when I was preparing localised version of some screen
726 shots for the manual. I was amazed to see it worked out of the box and
727 how comprehensive the list of software installed by default was.
</p>
729 <p>What amazed me was the complete network infrastructure directly
730 ready to use, which can and the nice administration interface provided
731 by
<a href=
"https://oss.gonicus.de/labs/gosa/">GOsa²
</a>. What pleased
732 me also was the fact that among the software installed by default,
733 there were many "traditional" educative software to learn languages,
734 to count, to program... but also software to develop creativity and
735 artistic skills with music (
<a href=
"http://ardour.org/">Ardour
</a>,
736 <a href=
"http://audacity.sourceforge.net/">Audacity
</a>) and
737 movies/animation (I was especially thinking of
738 <a href=
"http://linuxstopmotion.sourceforge.net/">Stopmotion
</a>).
</p>
740 <p>I am following the development of Debian Edu and am hanging out on
741 <a href=
"irc://irc.debian.org/%23debian-edu">#debian-edu
</a>.
742 Unfortunately, I don't much time to get more involved in this
743 beautiful project.
</p>
745 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
748 <p>For me, the main advantages of Skolelinux/Debian Edu are its
749 community of experts and its precise documentation, as well as the
750 fact that it provides a solution ready to use.
</p>
752 <p>I would add also the fact that it is based on the rock solid Debian
753 distribution, which ensures stability and provides a huge collection
754 of educational free software.
</p>
756 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
759 <p>Maybe the lack of manpower to do lobbying on the
760 project. Sometimes, people who need to take decisions concerning IT do
761 not have all the elements to evaluate properly free software
762 solutions. The fact that support by a company may be difficult to find
763 is probably a problem if the school does not have IT personnel.
</p>
765 <p>One can find support from a company by looking at
766 <a href=
"http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Help/ProfessionalHelp">the
767 wiki dokumentation
</a>, where some countries already have a number of
768 companies providing support for Debian Edu, like Germany or
769 Norway. This list is easy to find readily from the manual. However,
770 for other countries, like France, the list is empty. I guess that
771 consultants proposing support for Debian would be able to provide some
772 support for Debian Edu as well.
</p>
774 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong></p>
776 <p>I am using the KDE Plasma Desktop. But the pieces of software I use
777 most runs in a terminal: Mutt and OfflineIMAP for emails, latex for
778 scientific documents, mpd for music. VIM is my editor of choice. I am
779 also using the mathematical software
780 <a href=
"http://www.scilab.org/en/scilab/about">Scilab
</a> and
781 <a href=
"http://www.sagemath.org/index.html">Sage
</a> (built from
782 source as not completely packaged for Debian, yet).
784 <p><strong>Do you have any suggestions for teachers interested in
785 using the free software in Debian to teach mathematics and
786 statistics?
</strong></p>
788 <p>I do not have any "nice" recommendations for statistics. At our
789 university, we use both
<a href=
"http://www.r-project.org/">R
</a> and
790 Scilab to teach statistics and probabilistic simulations. For
791 geometry, there are nice programs:
</p>
795 <li><a href=
"http://www.drgeo.eu/">drgeo
</a> and
796 <a href=
"http://edu.kde.org/applications/all/kig">kig
</a> to do
797 constructions in planar geometry
799 <li><a href=
"http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/software/download/kali.html">kali
</a>
800 to discover symmetry groups (the so-called wallpapers and frieze
801 groups), although the interface looks a bit old.
</li>
806 <a href=
"http://edu.kde.org/applications/all/cantor">cantor
</a>, which
807 provides a uniform interface to SciLab, Sage,
808 <a href=
"http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Octave">Octave
</a>, etc...
</p>
810 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
811 get schools to use free software?
</strong></p>
813 <p>My suggestions would be to
</p>
817 <li>advertise the reduction of costs when free software is used.
</li>
819 <li>communicate about the quality of free software projects, using
820 well known examples like Firefox, ThunderBird and
821 OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice.
</li>
823 <li>advertise the living and strong community around the project.
</li>
825 <li>show that it is not more difficult to use than any other
