26 utgaven av «Hvordan knuse overvåkningskapitalismen» av Cory Doctorow
27 ferdig og klar til å glede millioner av lesere over hele verden.

39 overvåkingskapitalismen» av dr. Cory Doctorow. Den engelske
40 bokutgivelsen kom for noen dager siden og lanseres med et Webinar
41 torsdag 2021-01-28. Doctorow besøkte Norge og NUUG i desember med sin
42 presentasjon Monopoly, Not Mind Control: What's Really Happening With
43 "Surveillance Capitalism".</p>

45 <p>I funn etter funn, eksempel etter eksempel, gjennomgår og
46 analyserer dr. Doctorow de utfordringer vi møter i større og større
47 omfang. Ikke bare i USA, men også her hjemme.</p>

49 <p>Cory Doctorow er en britisk-kanadisk forfatter, journalist og
50 aktivist, kjent for sine science fiction-romaner, for arbeidet for
51 Creative Commons-bevegelsen, og for sine bidrag til reform av
52 opphavsretten. Han er både æresdoktor og gjesteforeleser i
53 datavitenskap ved Open University i UK, konsulent for Electronic
54 Frontier Foundation, og godt kjent for innsiktsfullt å kommentere og
55 skrive om digital utvikling.</p>

57 <p>Boken lanseres nå på norsk, både som ebok og på papir, oversatt av
58 en dugnadsgjeng ledet av Petter Reinholdtsen.</p>

60 <p>Boken reiser noen helt grunnleggende og samfunnskritiske spørsmål:
61 Hva fører det til når store deler av Internettet domineres av få store
62 aktører og deres styringsverktøy og algoritmer?</p>

64 <p>Som individer bør vi være opptatt at grenser blir satt og håndhevet
65 - grenser for overvåkning av individet, for utøvelse av kommersiell
66 og politisk påvirkning, og for monopoldannelser i
67 dataverdenen. Slik grensesetting styrker personvernet.</p>

69 <p>Konkurransetilsynet har ansvaret for at konkurranselovens § 11 skal
70 forby «et dominerende foretak for utilbørlig å utnytte og misbruke
71 sin dominerende stilling». Et tilsvarende forbud omfattes også av
72 EØS-avtalens artikkel 54. Boken går i detalj om serien av
73 innskrenkninger vi møter i valgfriheten, innskrenkninger som denne
74 lovgivningen nettopp skal forhindre. Håndhevelse av en slik lovgivning
75 er også til fordel for mindre næringsdrivende som uten dette får
76 begrenset sine faktiske eller potensielle muligheter for vekst og
77 etablering. «Slik atferd kan utgjøre et misbruk og kan ta ulike
78 former», skriver Konkurransetilsynet.</p>

80 <p>Cory Doctorow går i sin bok lengre enn det med sine mange eksempler
81 på forhold det burde vært grepet inn mot.</p>

151 others, the decentralized communication platform

153 (earlier known as Ring), managed to get
154 <a href="https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/ring">its latest version</a>
155 into Debian Testing. Several of its dependencies has caused build and
156 propagation problems, which all seem to be solved now.</p>

158 <p>In addition to the fact that Jami is decentralized, similar to how
159 bittorrent is decentralized, I first of all like how it is not
160 connected to external IDs like phone numbers. This allow me to set up
161 computers to send me notifications using Jami without having to find
162 get a phone number for each computer. Automatic notification via Jami
163 is also made trivial thanks to the provided client side API (as a DBus
164 service). Here is my bourne shell script demonstrating how to let any
165 system send a message to any Jami address. It will create a new
166 identity before sending the message, if no Jami identity exist

360 general distribution. This updated paperback edition <a

363 form as PDF, EPUB and Mobipocket, and can also be

367 which concludes several months of work by several volunteers. The
368 number of Linux related books published in Norwegian are few, and I

398 to the next step, and have asked for the print version to be prepared

402 hosted Weblate service</a>, but it will be soon. :) You can check out

427 <div class="body"><p>Three years ago, the first Norwegian Bokmål edition of
428 "<a href="https://debian-handbook.info/">The Debian Administrator's
429 Handbook</a>" was published. This was based on Debian Jessie. Now a
430 new and updated version based on Buster is getting ready. Work on the
431 updated Norwegian Bokmål edition has been going on for a few months
432 now, and yesterday, we reached the first mile stone, with 100% of the
433 texts being translated. A lot of proof reading remains, of course,
434 but a major step towards a new edition has been taken.</p>

436 <p>The book is translated by volunteers, and we would love to get some
437 help with the proof reading. The translation uses
438 <a href="https://hosted.weblate.org/languages/nb_NO/debian-handbook/">the
439 hosted Weblate service</a>, and we welcome everyone to have a look and
440 submit improvements and suggestions. There is also a proof readers

462 User Group</a>, I have the pleasure of receiving the
463 <a href="https://www.usenix.org/">USENIX</a> magazine

465 several times a year. I rarely have time to read all the articles,
466 but try to at least skim through them all as there is a lot of nice
467 knowledge passed on there. I even carry the latest issue with me most
468 of the time to try to get through all the articles when I have a few
469 spare minutes.</p>

471 <p>The other day I came across a nice article titled
472 "<a href="https://www.usenix.org/publications/login/winter2018/oneill">The
473 Secure Socket API: TLS as an Operating System Service</a>" with a
474 marvellous idea I hope can make it all the way into the POSIX standard.
475 The idea is as simple as it is powerful. By introducing a new
476 socket() option IPPROTO_TLS to use TLS, and a system wide service to
477 handle setting up TLS connections, one both make it trivial to add TLS
478 support to any program currently using the POSIX socket API, and gain
479 system wide control over certificates, TLS versions and encryption
480 systems used. Instead of doing this:</p>

498 web site to spread the idea, and the code for a kernel module and the
499 associated system daemon is available from two github repositories:
500 <a href="https://github.com/markoneill/ssa">ssa</a> and
501 <a href="https://github.com/markoneill/ssa-daemon">ssa-daemon</a>.
502 Unfortunately there is no explicit license information with the code,
503 so its copyright status is unclear. A
504 <a href="https://github.com/markoneill/ssa/issues/2">request to solve
505 this</a> about it has been unsolved since 2018-08-17.</p>

507 <p>I love the idea of extending socket() to gain TLS support, and
508 understand why it is an advantage to implement this as a kernel module
509 and system wide service daemon, but can not help to think that it
510 would be a lot easier to get projects to move to this way of setting
511 up TLS if it was done with a user space approach where programs
512 wanting to use this API approach could just link with a wrapper
513 library.</p>

535 <div class="body"><p>Det er tett med sensorstasjoner langs veinettet i Norge, som
536 registrerer hvilke kjøretøy som passerer eller tar bilde av de som
537 drar forbi. I følge
538 <a href="https://vegkart.atlas.vegvesen.no/">Vegvesenets nasjonale
539 veidatabank (NVDB)</a>, er det 353 bomstasjoner langs det norske
540 veinettet. 21 i nordnorge, 48 i trøndelagsområdet, 13 på
541 nordvestlandet, 91 i bergenstraktene og 180 på østlandsområdet. I
542 tillegg finnes det et utall overvåkningskamera og noen titalls
543 RFID-avlesere for bompengebrikker som samler inn informasjon om hvilke
544 biler som befinner seg hvor i landet. For ikke å glemme alle
545 mobilbasestasjoner som registrerer hvor brukere av mobilnettverket
546 befinner seg. De er ikke tema i dag.</p>

548 <p>De som kjører mye har interesse av å vite hvor mye bompenger det vil
549 koste å kjøre fra et sted til et annet, og dette behovet har aktørene
550 bak <a href="https://bompengekalkulator.no/">Bompengekalkulatoren</a>
551 tatt sikte på å tilby i markedet. Fornuftig nok har de også en
552 gratistjeneste, slik at de får frivillige til å gi innspill om feil i
553 datagrunnlaget. Jeg ble nylig nysgjerring på hvor mye det til koste å
554 kjøre på kryss og tvers i Norge, og valgte meg ut en teststrekning fra
555 Oslo til Tromsø for å se hvilke beløp som gjelder.</p>

557 <p>Bompengekalkulatoren viser frem flere rutealternativer for et gitt
558 reisesøk, og i dette tilfellet, for reise fra Oslo Sentralstasjon til
559 Tromsø sentrum, viser den tre alternativ. Merk, disse tallene gjelder
560 bensindrevet personbil. En kan velge takstkategori i
561 webgrensesnittet. Det ene rutealternativet er E6 gjennom Norge, de to
562 andre er E45 og E4 gjennom sverige. E45 er innlandsruten i Sverige,
563 motorvei gjennom store skoger som i følge kalkulatoren skal ta 22
564 timer og 26 minutter med norsk bompengebeløp på 164 kroner. Jeg har
565 mine tvil til om datasettet til Bompengekalkulatoren har svenske
566 bomstasjoner, så ta dette beløpet med en klype salt. E4 er veien
567 langs Bottenviken og mer befolket område, og skal ta 22 timer og 50
568 minutter til en norsk bompengebeløp på 71 kroner. Den norske ruten
569 langs E6 skal derimot ta 23 timer og 16 minutter og beløpe seg til 664
570 kroner. Beløpene er uten autopass-brikke, slik at en slipper å få
571 bilens posisjon registrert i alle bompengebrikkeavleserne som ikke
572 også er bomstasjoner. For trailere er bompengekostnaden 2-3 ganger så
573 høy som for personbil. I tillegg til pengebeløpet, som faktureres
574 etterskuddsvis og de siste årene har blitt umulig å gjøre opp kontant
575 på stedet, så kommer kostnaden med å få sine personopplysninger samlet
576 inn, lagret og gjort tilgjengelig for fremmede på ubestemt tid. Jeg
577 ser på den kostnaden som mye høyere en pengebeløpet som
578 faktureres.</p>

580 <p>For en tilsvarende tur fra Oslo til Bergen, så forteller
581 kalkulatoren at raskeste vei er riksvei 7 på 7 timer 4 minutter med
582 bompengebeløp 409 kroner. Alternativene listet opp er E134 på 8 timer
583 37 minutter med bompengebeløp 318 kroner og fylkesivei 40 på 7 timer
584 30 minutter med beløp 331. Det kan kanskje være greit å sjekke ut før
585 en setter seg i bilen hvor ens personopplysninger vil bli samlet inn
586 og lagret 5 fem år, når en velger hvilken rute en går for.</p>

611 experience even better when streaming directly from a bittorrent
612 source. The package is currently in Debian unstable, but should be
613 available in Debian testing in two days. To test it, simply install

648 community is still active, and new people keep showing up on the IRC

650 <a href="https://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/">the debian-edu mailing
651 list</a>, I decided to give it another go. I was hoping someone else
652 might pick up the idea and run with it, but this has not happened as
653 far as I can tell, so here we are… This time the announcement of a new
654 free software tool to
655 <a href="https://framagit.org/Yvan-Masson/WhosWho">create a school year
656 book</a> triggered my interest, and I decided to learn more about its
657 author.</p>

659 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?</strong></p>

661 <p>My name is Yvan MASSON, I live in France. I have my own one person
662 business in computer services. The work consist of visiting my
663 customers (person's home, local authority, small business) to give
664 advise, install computers and software, fix issues, and provide
665 computing usage training. I spend the rest of my time enjoying my
666 family and promoting free software.</p>

668 <p><strong>What is your approach for promoting free
669 software?</strong></p>

671 <p>When I think that free software could be suitable for someone, I
672 explain what it is, with simple words, give a few known examples, and
673 explain that while there is no fee it is a viable alternative in many
674 situations. Most people are receptive when you explain how it is
675 better (I simplify arguments here, I know that it is not so simple):
676 Linux works on older hardware, there are no viruses, and the software
677 can be audited to ensure user is not spied upon. I think the most
678 important is to keep a clear but moderated speech: when you try to
679 convince too much, people feel attacked and stop listening.</p>

681 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
682 project?</strong></p>

684 <p>I can not remember how I first heard of Skolelinux / Debian Edu,
685 but probably on planet.debian.org. As I have been working for a
686 school, I have interest in this type of project.

688 <p>The school I am involved in is a school for "children" between 14
689 and 18 years old. The French government has recommended free software
690 since 2012, but they do not always use free software themselves. The
691 school computers are still using the Windows operating system, but all
692 of them have the classic set of free software: Firefox ESR,
693 LibreOffice (with the excellent extension Grammalecte that indicates
694 French grammatical errors), SumatraPDF, Audacity, 7zip, KeePass2, VLC,
695 GIMP, Inkscape…

697 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
698 Edu?</strong></p>

700 <p>It is free software! Built on Debian, I am sure that users are not
701 spied upon, and that it can run on low end hardware. This last point
702 is very important, because we really need to improve "green IT". I do
703 not know enough about Skolelinux / Debian Edu to tell how it is better
704 than another free software solution, but what I like is the "all in
705 one" solution: everything has been thought of and prepared to ease
706 installation and usage.</p>

708 <p>I like Free Software because I hate using something that I can not
709 understand. I do not say that I can understand everything nor that I
710 want to understand everything, but knowing that someone / some company
711 intentionally prevents me from understanding how things work is really
712 unacceptable to me.</p>

714 <p>Secondly, and more importantly, free software is a requirement to
715 prevent abuses regarding human rights and environmental care.
716 Humanity can not rely on tools that are in the hands of small group of
717 people.</p>

719 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
720 Edu?</strong></p>

722 <p>Again, I don't know this project enough. Maybe a dedicated website?
723 Debian wiki works well for documentation, but is not very appealing to
724 someone discovering the project. Also, as Skolelinux / Debian Edu uses
725 OpenLDAP, it probably means that Windows workstations cannot use
726 centralized authentication. Maybe the project could use Samba as an
727 Active Directory domain controller instead, allowing Windows desktop
728 usage when necessary.</p>

730 <p>(Editors note: In fact Windows workstations can
731 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Buster/HowTo/Samba">use
732 the centralized authentication in a Debian Edu setup</a>, at least for
733 some versions of Windows, but the fact that this is not well known can
734 be seen as an indication of the need for better documentation and
735 marketing. :)</p>

737 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?</strong></p>

739 <p>Nothing original: Debian testing/sid with Gnome desktop, Firefox,
740 Thunderbird, LibreOffice…</p>

742 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
743 get schools to use free software?</strong></p>

745 <p>Every effort to spread free software into schools is important,
746 whatever it is. But I think, at least where I live, that IT
747 professionals maintaining schools networks are still very "Microsoft
748 centric". Schools will use any working solution, but they need people
749 to install and maintain it. How to make these professionals sensitive
750 about free software and train them with solutions like Debian Edu /
751 Skolelinux is a really good question :-)</p>
