14

17 liten stund tilbake annonserte USIT at dagens fungerende epostsystemet

33
34
Tid: Onsdag 2013-06-05 kl. 10:00
35
Sted: 9. etasje i Lucy Smiths hus (admin-bygget)

36
37
41 beholde
42 kontrollen over egen infrastruktur.

43
44

46
47

48
49
2013-05-29

78

Included in Debian Edu /
79 Skolelinux, there are quite a lot of educational software.
80 Created to help teachers teach, and pupils learn. We have tried to
81 tag them all using debtags use::learning and role::program, and using
82 the debtags I was happy to be able to create a collage of the
83 educational software packages installed by default, sorted by the
84 debtag field. Here it is. Click on a image to learn more about the
85 program.

86
87

215

Two days ago, I asked
216 how
217 I could install Linux on a Packard Bell EasyNote LV computer
218 preinstalled with Windows 8. I found a solution, but am horrified
219 with the obstacles put in the way of Linux users on a laptop with UEFI
220 and Windows 8.

221
222
I never found out if the cause of my problems were the use of UEFI
223 secure booting or fast boot. I suspect fast boot was the problem,
224 causing the firmware to boot directly from HD without considering any
225 key presses and alternative devices, but do not know UEFI settings
226 enough to tell.

227
228
There is no way to install Linux on the machine in question without
229 opening the box and disconnecting the hard drive! This is as far as I
230 can tell, the only way to get access to the firmware setup menu
231 without accepting the Windows 8 license agreement. I am told (and
232 found description on how to) that it is possible to configure the
233 firmware setup once booted into Windows 8. But as I believe the terms
234 of that agreement are completely unacceptable, accepting the license
235 was never an alternative. I do not enter agreements I do not intend
236 to follow.

237
238
I feared I had to return the laptops and ask for a refund, and
239 waste many hours on this, but luckily there was a way to get it to
240 work. But I would not recommend it to anyone planning to run Linux on
241 it, and I have become sceptical to Windows 8 certified laptops. Is
242 this the way Linux will be forced out of the market place, by making
243 it close to impossible for "normal" users to install Linux without
244 accepting the Microsoft Windows license terms? Or at least not
245 without risking to loose the warranty?

246
247
I've updated the
248 Linux Laptop
249 wiki page for Packard Bell EasyNote LV, to ensure the next person
250 do not have to struggle as much as I did to get Linux into the
251 machine.

252
253
Thanks to Bob Rosbag, Florian Weimer, Philipp Kern, Ben Hutching,
254 Michael Tokarev and others for feedback and ideas.

262

263

I've run into quite a problem the last few days. I bought three
264 new laptops for my parents and a few others. I bought Packard Bell
265 Easynote LV to run Kubuntu on and use as their home computer. But I
266 am completely unable to figure out how to install Linux on it. The
267 computer is preinstalled with Windows 8, and I suspect it uses UEFI
268 instead of a BIOS to boot.

269
270
The problem is that I am unable to get it to PXE boot, and unable
271 to get it to boot the Linux installer from my USB stick. I have yet
272 to try the DVD install, and still hope it will work. when I turn on
273 the computer, there is no information on what buttons to press to get
274 the normal boot menu. I expect to get some boot menu to select PXE or
275 USB stick booting. When booting, it first ask for the language to
276 use, then for some regional settings, and finally if I will accept the
277 Windows 8 terms of use. As these terms are completely unacceptable to
278 me, I have no other choice but to turn off the computer and try again
279 to get it to boot the Linux installer.

280
281
I have gathered my findings so far on a Linlap page about the
282 Packard Bell
283 EasyNote LV model. If you have any idea how to get Linux
284 installed on this machine, please get in touch or update that wiki
285 page. If I can't find a way to install Linux, I will have to return
286 the laptop to the seller and find another machine for my parents.

287
288
I wonder, is this the way Linux will be forced out of the market
289 using UEFI and "secure boot" by making it impossible to install Linux
290 on new Laptops?

299

En ting
300 Skolelinux-prosjektet har
301 hatt mye glede av er studentprosjekter. F.eks. er
302 stillbildeanimasjonssystemet

311
312
Jeg heter Nirosan Thiyagalingam. Jeg er 24 år og studerer
313 dataingeniør studiet ved Høgskolen i Sør Trøndelag. Interessen for
315 vært glad i å lære nye ting.

320
321
Hvordan kom du i kontakt med Skolelinux-prosjektet?

322
323
347 alt skjer helt automatisk.
351 kontorprogrammer fungerer godt. Det kan derfor konkluderes med at
352 datamaskinen er egnet for enkle oppgaver.
353
354

384 like stor grad som for eksempel
385 Ubuntu sine sider. Deres side

402
403
409 ansvarlige få teste ut hvordan Skolelinux fungerer i praksis.
412 betraktelig.

421

Debian Edu / Skolelinux is
422 an operating system based on Debian intended for use in schools. It
423 contain a turn-key solution for the computer network provided to
424 pupils in the primary schools. It provide both the central server,
425 network boot servers and desktop environments with heaps of
426 educational software. The project was founded almost 12 years ago,
427 2001-07-02. If you want to support the project, which is in need for
428 cash to fund developer gatherings and other project related activity,
429 please
430 donate some money.
431
432
A topic that come up again and again on the Debian Edu mailing
433 lists and elsewhere, is the question on how to transform a Debian or
434 Ubuntu installation into a Debian Edu installation. It isn't very
435 hard, and last week I wrote a script to replicate the steps done by
436 the Debian Edu installer.

437
438
The script,
439 debian-edu-bless
440 in the debian-edu-config package, will go through these six steps and
441 transform an existing Debian Wheezy or Ubuntu (untested) installation
442 into a Debian Edu Workstation:

443
444

445
446
Add skolelinux related APT sources.

447
Create /etc/debian-edu/config with the wanted configuration.

448
Install debian-edu-install to load preseeding values and pull in
449 our configuration.

450
Preseed debconf database with profile setup in
451 /etc/debian-edu/config, and run tasksel to install packages
452 according to the profile specified in the config above,
453 overriding some of the Debian automation machinery.

454
Run debian-edu-cfengine-D installation to configure everything
455 that could not be done using preseeding.

456
Ask for a reboot to enable all the configuration changes.

457
458

459
460
There are some steps in the Debian Edu installation that can not be
461 replicated like this. Disk partitioning and LVM setup, for example.
462 So this script just assume there is enough disk space to install all
463 the needed packages.

464
465
The script was created to help a Debian Edu student working on
466 setting up Raspberry Pi as a
467 Debian Edu client, and using it he can take the existing
468 Raspbian installation and
469 transform it into a fully functioning Debian Edu Workstation (or
470 Roaming Workstation, or whatever :).

471
472
The default setting in the script is to create a KDE Workstation.
473 If a LXDE based Roaming workstation is wanted instead, modify the
474 PROFILE and DESKTOP values at the top to look like this instead:

475
476

477 PROFILE="Roaming-Workstation"
478 DESKTOP="lxde"
479

480
481
The script could even become useful to set up Debian Edu servers in
482 the cloud, by starting with a virtual Debian installation at some
483 virtual hosting service and setting up all the services on first
484 boot.

493

The Debian Edu / Skolelinux
494 project is making great progress and made its second Wheezy based
495 release today. This is the release announcement:

496
497
New features for Debian Edu 7.0.0 alpha1 released
498 2013-05-14

499
500
This is the release notes for for Debian Edu / Skolelinux 7.0.0 edu
501 alpha1, based on <ahref="http://www.debian.org">Debian with
502 codename "Wheezy".

503
504
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

505
506
Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
507 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
508 configured school network. Immediatly after installation a school
509 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
510 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
511 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
512 initial installation of the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all
513 other machines can be installed via the network.

514
515
This is the first test release based on Wheezy (which currently is
516 not released yet). Basically this is an updated and slightly improved
517 version compared to the Squeeze release.

518
519
Software updates

520

521
Install freemind (0.9.0) by default, and stop installing vym by
522 default.

523
Install chromium (26.0.1410.43) by default.

524
Install goplay (0.5-1.1) to make golearn available by default.

525
Updated support for Japanese input methods, now based on
526 ibus-anthy.

527

528
529
Other changes

530

531
532
Switched default file system from ext3 to ext4 for speed and
533 reliability improvements.

534
Got rid of unwanted winbind daemon and PAM setup activated because
535 of 706434.

536
Extended and improved the testsuite tests to detect more possible
537 problems.

538
Corrected proxy handling to not set http_proxy to a bogus
539 direct:// URL.

540
Corrected proxy setup for diskless workstations.

541
Corrected PXE setup to use our updated udebs during installation.

542
Made installation handling of low entropy level more robust.

543
Create larger partitions for Roaming workstations and Thin client
544 servers, to make room for all the software installed.

545
Fix bug in Roaming workstation PAM setup, making it impossible to
546 log in (706753).

547

548
549
Known issues

550

551
552
IP resolution for the local hostname give useless IPv6 address
553 (705900). Only install
554 libnss-myhostname on roaming workstations until it is fixed.

555
DVD images are not yet ready.

556
No mass import of user account data in GOsa (ldif or csv)
557 available yet (698840).

558
Missing artwork for the KDE desktop (and probably a few others).

559
KDE Debian submenu lacks icons.

560
LXDE menu lacks entry for changing GOsa password
561 (website). Installing gosa-desktop will be an option.

562
Backup configuration via web interface is impossible due to
563 password submission problem
564 (700257).

565
566

567
568
Where to get it

569
570
To download the multiarch netinstall CD release you can use

571

572
573
ftp://ftp.skolelinux.org/skolelinux-cd/wheezy/debian-edu~7.0+edu0~a1-CD.iso

594

In January,
595 I
596 announced a new IRC
597 channel #debian-lego, for those of us in the Debian and Linux
598 community interested in LEGO, the
599 marvellous construction system from Denmark. We also created
600 a wiki page to have
601 a place to take notes and write down our plans and hopes. And several
602 people showed up to help. I was very happy to see the effect of my
603 call. Since the small start, we have a debtags tag
604 hardware::hobby:lego
605 tag for LEGO related packages, and now count 10 packages related to
606 LEGO and Mindstorms:

607
608

609

brickos

alternative OS for LEGO Mindstorms RCX. Supports development in C/C++

610

leocad

virtual brick CAD software

611

libnxt

utility library for talking to the LEGO Mindstorms NX

612

lnpd

daemon for LNP communication with BrickOS

613

nbc

compiler for LEGO Mindstorms NXT bricks

616

python-nxt-filer

simple GUI to manage files on a LEGO Mindstorms NXT

617

scratch

easy to use programming environment for ages 8 and up

618

t2n

simple command-line tool for Lego NXT

619

620
621
Some of these are available in Wheezy, and all but one are
622 currently available in Jessie/testing. leocad is so far only
623 available in experimental.

624
625
If you care about LEGO in Debian, please join us on IRC and help
626 adding the rest of the great free software tools available on Linux
627 for LEGO designers.

636

I fjor sommer ble jeg
637 gledelig
638 overrasket over et oppslag i avisen Fremover om Narvik kommunes
639 bruk av Skolelinux. Oppslaget
For litt
648 sak
649 2013/1023.

650
651
Notatet forteller at Narvik ville måtte betalt minst 9 millioner
I tillegg dokumenterer notatet
655 unødige utgifter på IT i skoleverket. :)

664

When I woke up this morning, I was very happy to see that the
665 release announcement
666 for Debian Wheezy was waiting in my mail box. This is a great
667 Debian release, and I expect to move my machines at home over to it fairly
668 soon.

669
670
The new debian release contain heaps of new stuff, and one program
671 in particular make me very happy to see included. The
672 Scratch program, made famous by
