  31         <p>Almost thirty years ago, some forward looking teachers at Samisk
  32 videregående skole og reindriftsskole teaching metal work and Northern
  33 Sámi, decided to create a list of words used in Northern Sámi metal
  34 work.  After almost ten years this resulted in a dictionary database,
  35 published as the book
  36 "<a href="https://ovttas.no/nb/girji_mekanikerord">Mekanihkkársánit :
  37 Mekanikerord = Mekaanisen alan sanasto = Mechanic's words</a>" in
  38 1999.  The
  39 <a href="http://www.skuvla.info/skolehist/sveinl-n.htm">story of this
  40 work</a> is available from the pen of Svein Lund, one of the leading
  41 actors behind this effort.  They even got the dictionary approved by
  42 the Sámi Language Council as the recommended metal work words to use.</p>

  44 <p>Fast forward twenty years, I came across this work when I recently
  45 became interested in metal work, and started watching educational and
  46 funny videos on the topic, like the ones from
  47 <a href="https://yewtu.be/channel/UCKLIIdKEpjAnn8E76KP7sQg">mrpete222</a>
  48 and <a href="https://yewtu.be/channel/UC5NO8MgTQKHAWXp6z8Xl7yQ">This
  49 Old Tony</a>.  But they all talk English, but I wanted to know what
  50 the tools and techniques they used were called in Norwegian.  Trying
  51 to track down a good dictionary from English to Norwegian, after much
  52 searching, I came across the database of words created
  53 almost thirty years ago, with translations into English, Norwegian,
  54 Northern Sámi, Swedish and Finnish.  This gave me a lot of the
  55 Norwegian phrases I had been looking for.  To make it easier for the
  56 next person trying to track down a good Norwegian dictionary for the
  57 metal worker, and because I knew the person behind the database from
  58 my Skolelinux / Debian Edu days, I decided to ask if the database
  59 could be released to the public without any usage limitations, in
  60 other words as a Creative Commons licensed data set.  And happily,
  61 after consulting with the Sámi Parliament of Norway, the database is
  62 now available with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International
  63 license from

 116 Northern Sámi, but not English.  Because of this, the Northern Sámi
 117 edition include both descriptions, the Norwegian edition include the
 118 Norwegian description and the English edition lack a descripiton.</p>

 120 <p>Once the database was available without any usage restrictions, and
 121 armed with my experience in publishing books, I decided to publish a
 122 Norwegian/English dictionary as a book using the database, to make the
 123 data set available also on paper and as an ebook.  Further into the
 124 project, it occurred to me that I could just as easily make an English
 125 dictionary, and talking to Svein and concluding that it was within
 126 reach, I decided to make a Northern Sámi dictionary too.</p>

 128 <p>Thus I suddenly find myself publishing a Northern Sámi dictionary,
 129 even though I do not understand the language myself.  I hope it will
 130 be well received, and can help revive the impressive work done almost
 131 thirty years ago to document the vocabulary of metal workers.  If I
 132 get some help, I might even extend it with some of the words I find
 133 missing, like collet, rotary broach, carbide, knurler, arbor press and
 134 others.  But the first edition build from a lightly edited version of

 146 include support for Northern Sámi.  Before I started, these lacked the
 147 needed locale settings for this language, but now the patches are
 148 included upstream.</p>

 174 utgaven av «Hvordan knuse overvåkningskapitalismen» av Cory Doctorow

 194 analyserer dr. Doctorow de utfordringer vi møter i større og større
 195 omfang. Ikke bare i USA, men også her hjemme.</p>

 197 <p>Cory Doctorow er en britisk-kanadisk forfatter, journalist og
 198 aktivist, kjent for sine science fiction-romaner, for arbeidet for
 199 Creative Commons-bevegelsen, og for sine bidrag til reform av
 200 opphavsretten. Han er både æresdoktor og gjesteforeleser i
 201 datavitenskap ved Open University i UK, konsulent for Electronic
 202 Frontier Foundation, og godt kjent for innsiktsfullt å kommentere og
 203 skrive om digital utvikling.</p>

 209 Hva fører det til når store deler av Internettet domineres av få store
 210 aktører og deres styringsverktøy og algoritmer?</p>

 213 - grenser for overvåkning av individet, for utøvelse av kommersiell
 214 og politisk påvirkning, og for monopoldannelser i
 215 dataverdenen. Slik grensesetting styrker personvernet.</p>

 217 <p>Konkurransetilsynet har ansvaret for at konkurranselovens § 11 skal
 218 forby «et dominerende foretak for utilbørlig å utnytte og misbruke
 219 sin dominerende stilling». Et tilsvarende forbud omfattes også av
 220 EØS-avtalens artikkel 54. Boken går i detalj om serien av
 221 innskrenkninger vi møter i valgfriheten, innskrenkninger som denne
 222 lovgivningen nettopp skal forhindre. Håndhevelse av en slik lovgivning
 223 er også til fordel for mindre næringsdrivende som uten dette får
 224 begrenset sine faktiske eller potensielle muligheter for vekst og
 225 etablering. «Slik atferd kan utgjøre et misbruk og kan ta ulike
 226 former», skriver Konkurransetilsynet.</p>

 394 <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free Culture by Lawrence
 395 Lessig</a>, is still selling a few copies.  Not a lot, but enough to
 396 have contributed slightly over $500 to the <a
 397 href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons Corporation</a>
 398 so far.  All the profit is sent there. Most books are still sold via
 399 Amazon (83 copies), with Ingram second (49) and Lulu (12) and Machette (7) as
 400 minor channels.  Bying directly from Lulu bring the largest cut to
 401 Creative Commons.  The English Edition sold 80 copies so far, the
 402 French 59 copies, and Norwegian only 8 copies.  Nothing impressive,
 403 but nice to see the work we put down is still being appreciated.  The

 492         <p>I am working on publishing yet another book related to Creative
 493 Commons.  This time it is a book filled with interviews and histories
 494 from those around the globe making a living using Creative
 495 Commons.</p>

 497 <p>Yesterday, after many months of hard work by several volunteer
 498 translators, the first draft of a Norwegian Bokmål edition of the book
 499 <a href="https://madewith.cc">Made with Creative Commons from 2017</a>
 500 was complete.  The Spanish translation is also complete, while the
 501 Dutch, Polish, German and Ukraine edition need a lot of work.  Get in
 502 touch if you want to help make those happen, or would like to
 503 translate into your mother tongue.</p>

 505 <p>The whole book project started when
 506 <a href="http://gwolf.org/node/4102">Gunnar Wolf announced</a> that he
 507 was going to make a Spanish edition of the book.  I noticed, and
 508 offered some input on how to make a book, based on my experience with
 509 translating the
 510 <a href="https://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/fri-kultur/paperback/product-22441576.html">Free
 511 Culture</a> and
 512 <a href="https://debian-handbook.info/get/#norwegian">The Debian
 513 Administrator's Handbook</a> books to Norwegian Bokmål.  To make a
 514 long story short, we ended up working on a Bokmål edition, and now the
 515 first rough translation is complete, thanks to the hard work of
 516 Ole-Erik Yrvin, Ingrid Yrvin, Allan Nordhøy and myself.  The first
 517 proof reading is almost done, and only the second and third proof
 518 reading remains.  We will also need to translate the 14 figures and
 519 create a book cover.  Once it is done we will publish the book on
 520 paper, as well as in PDF, ePub and possibly Mobi formats.</p>

 522 <p>The book itself originates as a manuscript on Google Docs, is
 523 downloaded as ODT from there and converted to Markdown using pandoc.
 524 The Markdown is modified by a script before is converted to DocBook
 525 using pandoc.  The DocBook is modified again using a script before it
 526 is used to create a Gettext POT file for translators.  The translated
 527 PO file is then combined with the earlier mentioned DocBook file to
 528 create a translated DocBook file, which finally is given to dblatex to
 529 create the final PDF.  The end result is a set of editions of the
 530 manuscript, one English and one for each of the translations.</p>

 533 <a href="https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/madewithcc/translation/">the
 534 Weblate web based translation system</a>.  Please have a look there

 562 editions of the classic <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free
 563 Culture book</a> by the founder of the Creative Commons movement,
 564 Lawrence Lessig, is still being appreciated.  I had a look at the
 565 latest sales numbers for the paper edition today.  Not too impressive,
 566 but happy to see some buyers still exist.  All the revenue from the
 567 books is sent to the <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative
 568 Commons Corporation</a>, and they receive the largest cut if you buy
 569 directly from Lulu.  Most books are sold via Amazon, with Ingram
 570 second and only a small fraction directly from Lulu.  The ebook
 571 edition is available for free from

 634         <p>As my regular readers probably remember, the last year I published
 635 a French and Norwegian translation of the classic
 636 <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free Culture book</a> by the
 637 founder of the Creative Commons movement, Lawrence Lessig.  A bit less
 638 known is the fact that due to the way I created the translations,
 639 using docbook and po4a, I also recreated the English original.  And
 640 because I already had created a new the PDF edition, I published it
 641 too.  The revenue from the books are sent to the Creative Commons
 642 Corporation.  In other words, I do not earn any money from this
 643 project, I just earn the warm fuzzy feeling that the text is available
 644 for a wider audience and more people can learn why the Creative
 645 Commons is needed.</p>

 647 <p>Today, just for fun, I had a look at the sales number over at
 648 Lulu.com, which take care of payment, printing and shipping.  Much to
 649 my surprise, the English edition is selling better than both the
 650 French and Norwegian edition, despite the fact that it has been
 651 available in English since it was first published.  In total, 24 paper
 652 books was sold for USD $19.99 between 2016-01-01 and 2016-07-31:</p>

 665 summary from Lulu tell me 10 books was sold via the Amazon channel, 10
 666 via Ingram (what is this?) and 4 directly by Lulu.  And Lulu.com tells
 667 me that the revenue sent so far this year is USD $101.42.  No idea
 668 what kind of sales numbers to expect, so I do not know if that is a
 669 good amount of sales for a 10 year old book or not.  But it make me
 670 happy that the buyers find the book, and I hope they enjoy reading it
 671 as much as I did.</p>

 751 <a href="http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/">dblatex</a> developer Benoît
 752 Guillon, who created the PO file from the initial translation
 753 available from
 754 <a href="http://www.wikilivres.ca/wiki/Culture_libre">the Wikilivres
 755 wiki pages</a> and completed and corrected the translation to match
 756 the original docbook edition my project is using, as well as
 757 coordinated the proof reading of the final result.  I believe the end
 758 result look great, but I am biased and do not read French.  In
 759 addition to the paperback edition, the book is available in PDF, EPUB
 760 and Mobi format from the github project page linked to above.</p>

 762 <p>When enabling book store distribution on Lulu.com, I had to nearly
 763 triple the price to allow the book stores some profit.  I also had to
 764 accept that I will get some revenue when a book is sold via Lulu.com.
 765 But because of the non-commercial clause in the book license
 766 (CC-BY-NC), this might be a problem.  To bypass the problem I
 767 discussed how to handle the revenue with the author, and we agreed
 768 that the revenue for these editions go to the
 769 <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons non-profit
 770 Corporation</a> who handle donations to the Creative Commons project.
 771 So far they have earned around USD 70 on sales of the
 772 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/free-culture/paperback/product-22440520.html">English</a>

 774 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/fri-kultur/paperback/product-22441576.html">Norwegian

 880 movement</a> gained momentum, its creator Lawrence Lessig wrote the
 881 book <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Culture_(book)">Free
 882 Culture</a> to explain the problems with increasing copyright
 883 regulation and suggest some solutions.  I read the book back then and
 884 was very moved by it.  Reading the book inspired me and changed the
 885 way I looked on copyright law, and I would love it if more people
 886 would read it too.</p>

 888 <p>Because of this, I decided in the summer of 2012 to translate it to
 889 Norwegian Bokmål and publish it for those of my friends and family
 890 that prefer to read books in Norwegian.  I translated the book using
 891 docbook and a gettext PO file, and a byproduct of this process is a
 892 new edition of the English original.  I've been in touch with the
 893 author during by work, and he said it was fine with him if I also
 894 published an English version.  So I decided to do so.  Today, I made
 895 this edition

 957 pages</a>, and wrote a program to convert it into a PO file, allowing
 958 the translation to be integrated into the po4a based framework I use
 959 to create the Norwegian translation from the English edition.  We meet

 961 channel</a> to discuss the work.  If you want to help create a French

 987         <p>Creating a good looking book cover proved harder than I expected.
 988 I wanted to create a cover looking similar to the original cover of
 989 the
 990 <a href="https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/free-culture-lessig">Free
 991 Culture</a> book we are translating to Norwegian, and I wanted it in
 992 vector format for high resolution printing.  But my inkscape knowledge
 993 were not nearly good enough to pull that off.

 995 <p>But thanks to the great inkscape community, I was able to wrap up
 996 the cover yesterday evening.  I asked on the
 997 <a href="irc://irc.freenode.net/%23inkscape">#inkscape IRC channel</a>
 998 on Freenode for help and clues, and Marc Jeanmougin (Mc-) volunteered
 999 to try to recreate it based on the PDF of the cover from the HTML
1000 version.  Not only did he create a
1001 <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/copy1.svg ">SVG document with
1002 the original and his vector version side by side</a>, he even provided
1003 an <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/out-1.ogv">instruction
1004 video</a> explaining how he did it</a>.  But the instruction video is
1005 not easy to follow for an untrained inkscape user. The video is a
1006 recording on how he did it, and he is obviously very experienced as
1007 the menu selections are very quick and he mentioned on IRC that he did
1008 use some keyboard shortcuts that can't be seen on the video, but it
1009 give a good idea about the inkscape operations to use to create the
1010 stripes with the embossed copyright sign in the center.</p>

1012 <p>I took his SVG file, copied the vector image and re-sized it to fit
1013 on the cover I was drawing.  I am happy with the end result, and the

1050         <p>Today, finally, my first printed draft edition of the Norwegian
1051 translation of Free Culture I have been working on for the last few
1052 years arrived in the mail.  I had to fake a cover to get the interior
1053 printed, and the exterior of the book look awful, but that is
1054 irrelevant at this point.  I asked for a printed pocket book version
1055 to get an idea about the font sizes and paper format as well as how
1056 good the figures and images look in print, but also to test what the
1057 pocket book version would look like.  After receiving the 500 page
1058 pocket book, it became obvious to me that that pocket book size is too
1059 small for this book.  I believe the book is too thick, and several
1060 tables and figures do not look good in the size they get with that
1061 small page sizes.  I believe I will go with the 5.5x8.5 inch size
1062 instead.  A surprise discovery from the paper version was how bad the
1063 URLs look in print.  They are very hard to read in the colophon page.
1064 The URLs are red in the PDF, but light gray on paper.  I need to
1065 change the color of links somehow to look better.  But there is a
1066 printed book in my hand, and it feels great. :)</p>

1068 <p>Now I only need to fix the cover, wrap up the postscript with the
1069 store behind the book, and collect the last corrections from the proof
1070 readers before the book is ready for proper printing.  Cover artists
1071 willing to work for free and create a Creative Commons licensed vector

1073 a graphics designer are mostly missing.</p>

1095 mostly done, and a volunteer proof reader was going to check the text
1096 on paper, it was time this summer to focus on formatting my translated

1099 Lessig.  I've been trying to get both docboox-xsl+fop and dblatex to
1100 give me a good looking PDF, but in the end I went with dblatex, because
1101 its Debian maintainer and upstream developer were responsive and very
1102 helpful in solving my formatting challenges.</p>

1104 <p>Last night, I finally managed to create a PDF that no longer made
1105 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/">Lulu.com</a> complain after uploading,
1106 and I ordered a text version of the book on paper.  It is lacking a
1107 proper book cover and is not tagged with the correct ISBN number, but
1108 should give me an idea what the finished book will look like.</p>

1110 <p>Instead of using Lulu, I did consider printing the book using
1111 <a href="http://www.createspace.com/">CreateSpace</a>, but ended up
1112 using Lulu because it had smaller book size options (CreateSpace seem

1114 similar service in Norway, but have not seen anything so far.  Please
1115 let me know if I am missing out on something here.</p>

1118 pocket book (4.25x6.875 inches / 10.8x17.5 cm) with 556 pages, Digest

1120 15.3x22.9 cm) with 280 pages?  Fewer pager give a cheaper book, and a
1121 smaller book is easier to carry around.  The test book I ordered was

1284 reading. :) More spell checking is needed, and several illustrations
1285 need to be cleaned up.  The work stopped up because I had to give

1322         <p>The <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu / Skolelinux
1323 project</a> provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
1324 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
1325 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation.  This text is about how the
1326 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.</p>

1328 <p>One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
1329 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
1330 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
1331 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
1332 in sync.  And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
1333 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
1334 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
1335 edit the documentation using a web browser.  We also want it to be
1336 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
1337 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
1338 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
1339 goals.</p>

1341 <p>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
1342 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/">Debian
1343 wiki</a>, as several wiki pages written in English.  It consist of one
1344 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
1345 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
1346 chapters together into one large web page (aka
1347 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne">the
1348 AllInOne page</a>).  The AllInOne page is the one used for further
1349 processing and translations.  Thanks to the fact that the
1350 <a href="http://moinmo.in/">MoinMoin</a> installation on
1351 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
1352 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">the Docbook format</a>, we can fetch
1353 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
1354 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
1355 manual.  This process also download images and transform image
1356 references to use the locally downloaded images.  The generated
1357 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
1358 using the <tt>documentation/scripts/get_manual</tt> program, and the
1359 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
1360 a handfull of images.  The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
1361 and epub versions of the English manual.  This is the basic step of
1362 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
1363 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
1364 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.</p>

1366 <p>But English documentation is not enough for us.  We want translated
1367 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
1368 track the English original.  For this we use the
1369 <a href="http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html">poxml</a> package,
1370 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
1371 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
1372 translation tools used by those translating free software.  The pot
1373 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
1374 files), which the translations update with the native language
1375 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
1376 original.  The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
1377 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
1378 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
1379 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml).  This translated (or partly
1380 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
1381 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
1382 of the documentation.</p>

1384 <p>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files.  We
1385 recommend using
1386 <a href="http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/">lokalize</a>,
1387 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
1388 <a href="http://pootle.translatehouse.org/">Poodle</a> or
1389 <a href="https://www.transifex.com/">Transifex</a>.  All we care about
1390 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository.  Updated
1391 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
1392 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc">bug reports
1393 against the debian-edu-doc package</a>.</p>

1395 <p>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
1396 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
1397 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
1398 this regard).  For this we transform the original PNG images to the
1399 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
1400 translated images by storing translated versions in
1401 images/$LANGUAGECODE/.  I am a bit unsure about the details here.  The
1402 package maintainers know more.</p>

1440         <p>It has been a while since my last update.  Since last summer, I
1441 have worked on a Norwegian
1442 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> version of the 2004 book
1443 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> by Lawrence Lessig,
1444 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
1445 law.  Yesterday, I finally broken the 90% mark, when counting the
1446 number of strings to translate.  Due to real life constraints, I have
1447 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
1448 I found time to work on it again.  Still lots of work left, but the
1449 first draft is nearing completion.  I created a graph to show the
1450 progress of the translation:</p>

1454 <p>When the first draft is done, the translated text need to be
1455 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG
1456 drawings need to be fixed.  There are probably also some index entries
1457 missing that need to be added.  This can be done by comparing the
1458 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
1459 English docbook version with the paper version.  Last, the colophon
1460 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
1461 done.  I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
1462 of the index pages.  All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
1463 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
1464 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.</p>

1466 <p>There is still need for translators and people with docbook
1467 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
1468 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
1469 translation and proof reading.  And I would like the figures to be
1470 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them.  Any SVG master
1471 around?  There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.

1543 lisens, og novellen utgis av EFN med en Creative Commons (CC)
1544 fribrukslisens (nærmere bestemt lisensen CC-BY-NC-ND). For leserne
1545 eller brukerne innebærer dette at de får en klar og standardisert
1546 beskjed om hvilke rettigheter de har til å dele novellen videre med
1547 andre. For forfatteren innebærer dette økt synlighet og

1617         <p>A few days ago, during a discussion in
1618 <a href="http://www.efn.no/">EFN</a> about interesting books to read
1619 about copyright and the data retention directive, a suggestion to read
1620 the 1968 short story Kodémus by
1621 <a href="http://web2.gyldendal.no/toraage/">Tore Åge Bringsværd</a>
1622 came up.  The text was only available in old paper books, and thus not
1623 easily available for current and future generations.  Some of the
1624 people participating in the discussion contacted the author, and
1625 reported back 2013-03-19 that the author was OK with releasing the
1626 short story using a <a href="http://www.creativecommons.org/">Creative
1627 Commons</a> license.  The text was quickly scanned and OCR-ed, and we
1628 were ready to start on the editing and typesetting.</p>

1630 <p>As I already had some experience formatting text in my project to
1631 provide a Norwegian version of the Free Culture book by Lawrence
1632 Lessig, I chipped in and set up a
1633 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">DocBook</a> processing framework to
1634 generate PDF, HTML and EPUB version of the short story.  The tools to
1635 transform DocBook to different formats are already in my Linux
1636 distribution of choice, <a href="http://www.debian.org/">Debian</a>, so
1637 all I had to do was to use the
1638 <a href="http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/">dblatex</a>,
1639 <a href="http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/epub/README">dbtoepub</a>
1640 and <a href="https://fedorahosted.org/xmlto/">xmlto</a> tools to do the
1641 conversion.  After a few days, we decided to replace dblatex with
1642 xsltproc/fop (aka
1643 <a href="http://wiki.docbook.org/DocBookXslStylesheets">docbook-xsl</a>),
1644 to get the copyright information to show up in the PDF and to get a
1645 nicer &lt;variablelist&gt; typesetting, but that is just a minor
1646 technical detail.</p>

1648 <p>There were a few challenges, of course.  We want to typeset the
1649 short story to look like the original, and that require fairly good
1650 control over the layout.  The original short story have three
1651 parts/scenes separated by a single horizontally centred star (*), and
1652 the paragraphs do not contain only flowing text, but dialogs and text
1653 that started on a new line in the middle of the paragraph.</p>

1655 <p>I initially solved the first challenge by using a paragraph with a
1656 single star in it, ie &lt;para&gt;*&lt;/para&gt;, but it made sure a
1657 placeholder indicated where the scene shifted.  This did not look too
1658 good without the centring.  The next approach was to create a new
1659 preprocessor directive &lt;?newscene?&gt;, mapping to "&lt;hr/&gt;"
1660 for HTML and "&lt;fo:block text-align="center"&gt;&lt;fo:leader
1661 leader-pattern="rule" rule-thickness="0.5pt"/&gt;&lt;/fo:block&gt;"
1662 for FO/PDF output (did not try to implement this in dblatex, as we had

1757 in the current copyright laws, and I want it to be available also for
1758 those that are reluctant do read an English book.

1813 to debate the latest revisions to the Norwegian copyright law.  This

1874 the language used at the top, and the processing pipeline will use

1877 this work just fine.  For example a German user can start the document
1878 with &lt;book lang="de"&gt;, and the document will show up with the
1879 correct content with any of the docbook processors.  This is not the

1891 this mess.  Norwegian is not one, but two written variants.  The
1892 variants are Norwegian Nynorsk and Norwegian Bokmål.  There are three
1893 two letter language codes associated with these languages, Norwegian
1894 is 'no', Norwegian Nynorsk is 'nn' and Norwegian Bokmål is 'nb'.
1895 Historically the 'no' language code was used for Norwegian Bokmål, but
1896 many years ago this was found to be å bad idea, and the recommendation

2100 Internet påvirket folks forhold til kulturuttrykk, og min venn Vidar
2101 og jeg spekulert på at det hadde kanskje vært fornuftig om samtlige
2102 representanter fikk en norsk utgave av boken

2132 fant fra Hans Schou.  Skolelinux har hatt byggesystem for å lage
2133 oversatt HTML og PDF-utgave av Docbook-bøker i en årrekke, så jeg har
2134 kopiert og utvidet dette oppsettet.  Originalteksten er i Docbook, og
2135 oversettelsen gjøres i .po-filer med hjelp av vanlige
2136 oversetterverktøy brukt i fri programvareverden.  Dernest tar
2137 byggesystemet over og lager PDF og EPUB-utgave av den oversatte
2138 teksten.  Resultatet kan ses i Github-prosjektet.  For å komme raskt
2139 igang har jeg brukt maskinoversettelse av alle tekstbitene fra engelsk
2140 til norsk, noe som grovoversatte ca. 1300 av de ca. 1700 tekstbitene
2141 boken består av.  Jeg håper nå at flere kan bidra med å få
2142 oversettelsen på plass, slik at teksten kan være klar i løpet av
2143 høsten.  Når alt er oversatt må teksten gjennomgås for feil og
2144 konsistent språk.  Totalt er det nok mange timer som trengs for å
2145 gjennomføre oversettelsen.</p>

2147 <p>Økonomien i dette er ikke avskrekkende.  169
2148 stortingsrepresentanter og nesten like mange varamedlemmer bør få
2149 bøker, og estimert produduksjonskostnad for hver bok er rundt 6 EURO i
2150 følge et raskt estimat fra Lulu.  Jeg vet ennå ikke hvor mange sider
2151 det blir i størrelsen 5,5" x 8.5" (det er ca. 140 sider i A4-format),
2152 så jeg gjettet på 400 sider.  Jeg tror originalutgaven har nesten 400
2153 sider.  For 169*2 eksemplarer snakker vi om en trykkekostnad på
2154 ca. 2000 EURO, dvs. ca 15 000 NOK.  Det burde være mulig å finne en
2155 sponsor for å dekke en slik sum.  I tillegg kommer distribusjon og
2156 porto, som antagelig kommer på like mye.</p>
