</a> provide a Linux solution for schools, including a
27 powerful desktop with education software, a central server providing
28 web pages, user database, user home directories, central login and PXE
29 boot of both clients without disk and the installation to install Debian
30 Edu on machines with disk (and a few other services perhaps to small
31 to mention here). We in the Debian Edu team are currently working on
32 the Jessie based version, trying to get everything in shape before the
33 freeze, to avoid having to maintain our own package repository in the
35 <a href=
"https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Status/Jessie">current
36 status
</a> can be seen on the Debian wiki, and there is still heaps of
37 work left. Some fatal problems block testing, breaking the installer,
38 but it is possible to work around these to get anyway. Here is a
39 recipe on how to get the installation limping along.
</p>
41 <p>First, download the test ISO via

68 root after the initial boot from hard drive, and install the
69 education-desktop-XXX metapackage. XXX can be kde, gnome, lxde, xfce
70 or mate. If you want several desktop options, install more than one
71 metapackage. Once this is done, reboot and you should have a working
72 graphical login screen. This should no longer be needed once the
73 education-tasks package version
1.801 enter testing in two days.

75 <p>I believe the ISO build will start working on two days when the new
76 tasksel package enter testing and Steve McIntyre get a chance to
77 update the debian-cd git repository. The eatmydata, grub and desktop
78 issues are already fixed in unstable and testing, and should show up
79 on the ISO as soon as the ISO build start working again. Well the
80 eatmydata optimization is really just disabled. The proper fix
81 require an upload by the eatmydata maintainer applying the patch
82 provided in bug
<a href=
"https://bugs.debian.org/702711">#
702711</a>.
83 The rest have proper fixes in unstable.

103 to handle my fairly large DVD collection. It is a nice command line
104 tool to get details about a DVD, like title, tracks, track length,
105 etc, in XML, Perl or human readable format. But lsdvd have not seen
106 any new development since
2006 and had a few irritating bugs affecting
107 its use with some DVDs. Upstream seemed to be dead, and in January I
108 sent a small probe asking for a version control repository for the
109 project, without any reply. But I use it regularly and would like to
110 get
<a href=
"https://packages.qa.debian.org/lsdvd">an updated version
111 into Debian
</a>. So two weeks ago I tried harder to get in touch with
112 the project admin, and after getting a reply from him explaining that
113 he was no longer interested in the project, I asked if I could take
114 over. And yesterday, I became project admin.

116 <p>I've been in touch with a Gentoo developer and the Debian
117 maintainer interested in joining forces to maintain the upstream
118 project, and I hope we can get a new release out fairly quickly,
119 collecting the patches spread around on the internet into on place.
120 I've added the relevant Debian patches to the freshly created git
121 repository, and expect the Gentoo patches to make it too. If you got

370 denne informasjonen i dag kun brukes til å koble to
371 AutoPASS-brikkepasseringer passeringer sammen for å beregne
372 reisetiden, og at bruken er godkjent av Datatilsynet. Det er desverre
373 ikke mulig for en sjåfør som passerer under en slik boks å kontrollere
374 at AutoPASS-ID-en kun brukes til dette i dag og i fremtiden.

376 <p>I tillegg til denne type AutoPASS-sniffere vet jeg at det også
377 finnes mange automatiske stasjoner som tar betalt pr. passering (aka
378 bomstasjoner), og der lagres informasjon om tid, sted og bilnummer i
379 10 år. Finnes det andre slike sniffere plassert ut på veiene?

381 <p>Personlig har jeg valgt å ikke bruke AutoPASS-brikke, for å gjøre
382 det vanskeligere og mer kostbart for de som vil invadere privatsfæren
383 og holde rede på hvor bilen min beveger seg til enhver tid. Jeg håper
384 flere vil gjøre det samme, selv om det gir litt høyere private

405 a lot quicker. When we install more than
2000 packages in

"http://www.skolelinux.org/">Skolelinux / Debian Edu
</a> using
407 tasksel in the installer, unpacking the binary packages take forever.
408 A part of the slow I/O issue was discussed in
409 <a href=
"https://bugs.debian.org/613428">bug #
613428</a> about too
410 much file system sync-ing done by dpkg, which is the package
411 responsible for unpacking the binary packages. Other parts (like code
412 executed by postinst scripts) might also sync to disk during
413 installation. All this sync-ing to disk do not really make sense to
414 me. If the machine crash half-way through, I start over, I do not try
415 to salvage the half installed system. So the failure sync-ing is
416 supposed to protect against, hardware or system crash, is not really
417 relevant while the installer is running.
</p>
419 <p>A few days ago, I thought of a way to get rid of all the file
420 system sync()-ing in a fairly non-intrusive way, without the need to
421 change the code in several packages. The idea is not new, but I have
422 not heard anyone propose the approach using dpkg-divert before. It
423 depend on the small and clever package
424 <a href=
"https://packages.qa.debian.org/eatmydata">eatmydata
</a>, which
425 uses LD_PRELOAD to replace the system functions for syncing data to
426 disk with functions doing nothing, thus allowing programs to live
427 dangerous while speeding up disk I/O significantly. Instead of
428 modifying the implementation of dpkg, apt and tasksel (which are the
429 packages responsible for selecting, fetching and installing packages),
430 it occurred to me that we could just divert the programs away, replace
431 them with a simple shell wrapper calling
432 "eatmydata
$program
$@", to get the same effect.
433 Two days ago I decided to test the idea, and wrapped up a simple
434 implementation for the Debian Edu udeb.
</p>
436 <p>The effect was stunning. In my first test it reduced the running
437 time of the pkgsel step (installing tasks) from
64 to less than
44
438 minutes (
20 minutes shaved off the installation) on an old Dell
439 Latitude D505 machine. I am not quite sure what the optimised time
440 would have been, as I messed up the testing a bit, causing the debconf
441 priority to get low enough for two questions to pop up during
442 installation. As soon as I saw the questions I moved the installation
443 along, but do not know how long the question were holding up the
444 installation. I did some more measurements using Debian Edu Jessie,
445 and got these results. The time measured is the time stamp in
446 /var/log/syslog between the "pkgsel: starting tasksel" and the
447 "pkgsel: finishing up" lines, if you want to do the same measurement
448 yourself. In Debian Edu, the tasksel dialog do not show up, and the
449 timing thus do not depend on how quickly the user handle the tasksel

498 <p>The test is done using a netinst ISO on a USB stick, so some of the
499 time is spent downloading packages. The connection to the Internet
500 was
100Mbit/s during testing, so downloading should not be a
501 significant factor in the measurement. Download typically took a few
502 seconds to a few minutes, depending on the amount of packages being
505 <p>The speedup is implemented by using two hooks in

"https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/">Debian

</a>, the pre-pkgsel.d hook to set up the diverts, and the
508 finish-install.d hook to remove the divert at the end of the
509 installation. I picked the pre-pkgsel.d hook instead of the
510 post-base-installer.d hook because I test using an ISO without the
511 eatmydata package included, and the post-base-installer.d hook in
512 Debian Edu can only operate on packages included in the ISO. The
513 negative effect of this is that I am unable to activate this
514 optimization for the kernel installation step in d-i. If the code is
515 moved to the post-base-installer.d hook, the speedup would be larger
516 for the entire installation.

518 <p>I've implemented this in the

520 git repository, and plan to provide the optimization as part of the

592 <p>By now you might ask if this change should get into the normal
593 Debian installer too? I suspect it should, but am not sure the
594 current debian-installer coordinators find it useful enough. It also
595 depend on the side effects of the change. I'm not aware of any, but I
596 guess we will see if the change is safe after some more testing.

1070 translated, but the Norwegian text is ready for the first proof
1071 reading. :) More spell checking is needed, and several illustrations
1072 need to be cleaned up. The work stopped up because I had to give
1073 priority to other projects the last year, and the progress graph of
1074 the translation show this very well:

</a> provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
1105 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
1106 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation. This text is about how the
1107 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.
</p>
1109 <p>One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
1110 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
1111 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
1112 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
1113 in sync. And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
1114 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
1115 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
1116 edit the documentation using a web browser. We also want it to be
1117 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
1118 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
1119 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
1122 <p>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
1123 <a href=
"https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/">Debian
1124 wiki
</a>, as several wiki pages written in English. It consist of one
1125 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
1126 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
1127 chapters together into one large web page (aka
1128 <a href=
"https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne">the
1129 AllInOne page
</a>). The AllInOne page is the one used for further
1130 processing and translations. Thanks to the fact that the
1131 <a href=
"http://moinmo.in/">MoinMoin
</a> installation on
1132 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
1133 <a href=
"http://www.docbook.org/">the Docbook format
</a>, we can fetch
1134 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
1135 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
1136 manual. This process also download images and transform image
1137 references to use the locally downloaded images. The generated
1138 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
1139 using the
<tt>documentation/scripts/get_manual
</tt> program, and the
1140 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
1141 a handfull of images. The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
1142 and epub versions of the English manual. This is the basic step of
1143 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
1144 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
1145 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.
</p>
1147 <p>But English documentation is not enough for us. We want translated
1148 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
1149 track the English original. For this we use the
1150 <a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html">poxml
</a> package,
1151 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
1152 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
1153 translation tools used by those translating free software. The pot
1154 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
1155 files), which the translations update with the native language
1156 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
1157 original. The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
1158 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
1159 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
1160 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml). This translated (or partly
1161 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
1162 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
1163 of the documentation.
</p>
1165 <p>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files. We
1167 <a href=
"http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/">lokalize
</a>,
1168 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
1169 <a href=
"http://pootle.translatehouse.org/">Poodle
</a> or
1170 <a href=
"https://www.transifex.com/">Transifex
</a>. All we care about
1171 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository. Updated
1172 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
1173 <a href=
"https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc">bug reports
1174 against the debian-edu-doc package
</a>.
</p>
1176 <p>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
1177 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
1178 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
1179 this regard). For this we transform the original PNG images to the
1180 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
1181 translated images by storing translated versions in
1182 images/$LANGUAGECODE/. I am a bit unsure about the details here. The
1183 package maintainers know more.
</p>
