  25       <div class="body"><p>Rundt omkring i Oslo og Østlandsområdet henger det bokser over
  26 veiene som jeg har lurt på hva gjør.  De har ut fra plassering og
  27 vinkling sett ut som bokser som sniffer ut et eller annet fra
  28 forbipasserende trafikk, men det har vært uklart for meg hva det er de
  29 leser av.  Her om dagen tok jeg bilde av en slik boks som henger under
  30 <a href="http://www.openstreetmap.no/?zoom=19&mlat=59.96396&mlon=10.34443&layers=B00000">ei
  31 skibru på Sollihøgda</a>:</p>

  35 <p>Boksen er tydelig merket «Kapsch >>>», logoen til
  36 <a href="http://www.kapsch.net/">det sveitsiske selskapet Kapsch</a> som
  37 blant annet lager sensorsystemer for veitrafikk.  Men de lager mye
  38 forskjellig, og jeg kjente ikke igjen boksen på utseendet etter en
  39 kjapp titt på produktlista til selskapet.</p>

  41 <p>I og med at boksen henger over veien E16, en riksvei vedlikeholdt
  42 av Statens Vegvesen, så antok jeg at det burde være mulig å bruke
  43 REST-API-et som gir tilgang til vegvesenets database over veier,
  44 skilter og annet veirelatert til å finne ut hva i alle dager dette
  45 kunne være.  De har både
  46 <a href="https://www.vegvesen.no/nvdb/api/dokumentasjon/datakatalog">en
  47 datakatalog</a> og
  48 <a href="https://www.vegvesen.no/nvdb/api/dokumentasjon/sok">et
  49 søk</a>, der en kan søke etter ulike typer oppføringer innen for et
  50 gitt geografisk område.  Jeg laget et enkelt shell-script for å hente
  51 ut antall av en gitt type innenfor området skibrua dekker, og listet
  52 opp navnet på typene som ble funnet.  Orket ikke slå opp hvordan
  53 URL-koding av aktuelle strenger kunne gjøres mer generisk, og brukte
  54 en stygg sed-linje i stedet.</p>

 230 Hvordan finner jeg så ut hva dette kan være for noe.  En titt på

 232 for ID 862/Reisetidsregistreringspunkt</a> viser at det er finnes 53
 233 slike målere i Norge, og hvor de er plassert, men gir ellers få
 234 detaljer.  Det er plassert 40 på østlandet og 13 i Trondheimsregionen.
 235 Men siden nevner «AutoPASS», og hvis en slår opp oppføringen på
 236 Sollihøgda nevner den «Ciber AS» som ID for eksternt system.  (Kan det

 240  «Ciber AS autopass» fører meg til en artikkel fra NRK Trøndelag i

 249 Det kan dermed se ut til at jeg har funnet ut hva boksene gjør.</p>

 251 <p>Hvis det stemmer, så er dette bokser som leser av AutoPASS-ID-en
 252 til alle passerende biler med AutoPASS-brikke, og dermed gjør det mulig
 253 for de som kontrollerer boksene å holde rede på hvor en gitt bil er
 254 når den passerte et slikt målepunkt.  NRK-artikkelen forteller at
 255 denne informasjonen i dag kun brukes til å koble to
 256 AutoPASS-brikkepasseringer passeringer sammen for å beregne
 257 reisetiden, og at bruken er godkjent av Datatilsynet.  Det er desverre
 258 ikke mulig for en sjåfør som passerer under en slik boks å kontrollere
 259 at AutoPASS-ID-en kun brukes til dette i dag og i fremtiden.</p>

 261 <p>I tillegg til denne type AutoPASS-sniffere vet jeg at det også
 262 finnes mange automatiske stasjoner som tar betalt pr. passering (aka
 263 bomstasjoner), og der lagres informasjon om tid, sted og bilnummer i
 264 10 år.  Finnes det andre slike sniffere plassert ut på veiene?</p>

 266 <p>Personlig har jeg valgt å ikke bruke AutoPASS-brikke, for å gjøre
 267 det vanskeligere og mer kostbart for de som vil invadere privatsfæren
 268 og holde rede på hvor bilen min beveger seg til enhver tid.  Jeg håper
 269 flere vil gjøre det samme, selv om det gir litt høyere private
 270 utgifter (dyrere bompassering).  Vern om privatsfæren koster i disse
 271 dager.</p>

 289       <div class="body"><p>The <a href="https://www.debian.org/">Debian</a> installer could be
 290 a lot quicker.  When we install more than 2000 packages in
 291 <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Skolelinux / Debian Edu</a> using
 292 tasksel in the installer, unpacking the binary packages take forever.
 293 A part of the slow I/O issue was discussed in
 294 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/613428">bug #613428</a> about too
 295 much file system sync-ing done by dpkg, which is the package
 296 responsible for unpacking the binary packages.  Other parts (like code
 297 executed by postinst scripts) might also sync to disk during
 298 installation.  All this sync-ing to disk do not really make sense to
 299 me.  If the machine crash half-way through, I start over, I do not try
 300 to salvage the half installed system.  So the failure sync-ing is
 301 supposed to protect against, hardware or system crash, is not really
 302 relevant while the installer is running.</p>
 303
 304 <p>A few days ago, I thought of a way to get rid of all the file
 305 system sync()-ing in a fairly non-intrusive way, without the need to
 306 change the code in several packages.  The idea is not new, but I have
 307 not heard anyone propose the approach using dpkg-divert before.  It
 308 depend on the small and clever package
 309 <a href="https://packages.qa.debian.org/eatmydata">eatmydata</a>, which
 310 uses LD_PRELOAD to replace the system functions for syncing data to
 311 disk with functions doing nothing, thus allowing programs to live
 312 dangerous while speeding up disk I/O significantly.  Instead of
 313 modifying the implementation of dpkg, apt and tasksel (which are the
 314 packages responsible for selecting, fetching and installing packages),
 315 it occurred to me that we could just divert the programs away, replace
 316 them with a simple shell wrapper calling
 317 "eatmydata&nbsp;$program&nbsp;$@", to get the same effect.
 318 Two days ago I decided to test the idea, and wrapped up a simple
 319 implementation for the Debian Edu udeb.</p>
 320
 321 <p>The effect was stunning.  In my first test it reduced the running
 322 time of the pkgsel step (installing tasks) from 64 to less than 44
 323 minutes (20 minutes shaved off the installation) on an old Dell
 324 Latitude D505 machine.  I am not quite sure what the optimised time
 325 would have been, as I messed up the testing a bit, causing the debconf
 326 priority to get low enough for two questions to pop up during
 327 installation.  As soon as I saw the questions I moved the installation
 328 along, but do not know how long the question were holding up the
 329 installation.  I did some more measurements using Debian Edu Jessie,
 330 and got these results.  The time measured is the time stamp in
 331 /var/log/syslog between the "pkgsel: starting tasksel" and the
 332 "pkgsel: finishing up" lines, if you want to do the same measurement
 333 yourself.  In Debian Edu, the tasksel dialog do not show up, and the
 334 timing thus do not depend on how quickly the user handle the tasksel
 335 dialog.</p>

 383 <p>The test is done using a netinst ISO on a USB stick, so some of the
 384 time is spent downloading packages.  The connection to the Internet
 385 was 100Mbit/s during testing, so downloading should not be a
 386 significant factor in the measurement.  Download typically took a few
 387 seconds to a few minutes, depending on the amount of packages being
 388 installed.</p>

 390 <p>The speedup is implemented by using two hooks in
 391 <a href="https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/">Debian
 392 Installer</a>, the pre-pkgsel.d hook to set up the diverts, and the
 393 finish-install.d hook to remove the divert at the end of the
 394 installation.  I picked the pre-pkgsel.d hook instead of the
 395 post-base-installer.d hook because I test using an ISO without the
 396 eatmydata package included, and the post-base-installer.d hook in
 397 Debian Edu can only operate on packages included in the ISO.  The
 398 negative effect of this is that I am unable to activate this
 399 optimization for the kernel installation step in d-i.  If the code is
 400 moved to the post-base-installer.d hook, the speedup would be larger
 401 for the entire installation.</p>

 404 <a href="https://packages.qa.debian.org/debian-edu-install">debian-edu-install</a>
 405 git repository, and plan to provide the optimization as part of the
 406 Debian Edu installation.  If you want to test this yourself, you can

 474 edu-eatmydata-install and call it from the pre-pkgsel.d and
 475 finish-install.d scripts.</p>

 477 <p>By now you might ask if this change should get into the normal
 478 Debian installer too?  I suspect it should, but am not sure the
 479 current debian-installer coordinators find it useful enough.  It also
 480 depend on the side effects of the change.  I'm not aware of any, but I
 481 guess we will see if the change is safe after some more testing.
 482 Perhaps there is some package in Debian depending on sync() and
 483 fsync() having effect?  Perhaps it should go into its own udeb, to
 484 allow those of us wanting to enable it to do so without affecting
 485 everyone.</p>

 487 <p>Update 2014-09-24: Since a few days ago, enabling this optimization
 488 will break installation of all programs using gnutls because of
 489 <ahref="https://bugs.debian.org/702711">bug #702711.  An updated
 490 eatmydata package in Debian will solve it.</p>

 508 OpenPGP keyserver pool sks-keyservers.net</a>, and was very happy to
 509 learn that there is a large set of publicly available key servers to
 510 use when looking for peoples public key.  So far I have used
 511 subkeys.pgp.net, and some times wwwkeys.nl.pgp.net when the former

 857 from time to time with interesting questions and tips on how to adjust
 858 the setup.  I managed to interview him this summer.</p>

 860 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?</strong></p>

 862 <p>My name is Bernd Zeitzen and I'm married with Hedda, a self
 863 employed physiotherapist.  My former profession is tool maker, but I
 864 haven't worked for 30 years in this job.  30 years ago I started to
 865 support my wife and become her officeworker and a few years later the
 866 administrator for a small computer network, today based on Ubuntu
 867 Server (Samba, OpenVPN). For her daily work she has to use Windows
 868 Desktops because the software she needs to organize her business only
 869 works with Windows . :-(</p>

 872 Windows 98, 2000, XP, …, 8, Ubuntu, MacOSX.  Today we are running a
 873 Linux server with 6 Windows clients and 10 persons (teacher of

 875 psychologist and officeworkers) using our Samba shares via OpenVPN to

 885 software and the network and teaching the pupils increasing their

 950 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> by Lawrence Lessig,
 951 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with todays copyright
 952 law.  Yesterday, I finally completed translated the book text.  There
 953 are still some foot/end notes left to translate, the colophon page
 954 need to be rewritten, and a few words and phrases still need to be
 955 translated, but the Norwegian text is ready for the first proof
 956 reading. :) More spell checking is needed, and several illustrations
 957 need to be cleaned up.  The work stopped up because I had to give
 958 priority to other projects the last year, and the progress graph of
 959 the translation show this very well:</p>

 988       <div class="body"><p>The <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu / Skolelinux
 989 project</a> provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
 990 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
 991 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation.  This text is about how the
 992 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.</p>
 993
 994 <p>One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
 995 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
 996 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
 997 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
 998 in sync.  And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
 999 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
1000 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
1001 edit the documentation using a web browser.  We also want it to be
1002 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
1003 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
1004 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
1005 goals.</p>

1007 <p>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
1008 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/">Debian
1009 wiki</a>, as several wiki pages written in English.  It consist of one
1010 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
1011 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
1012 chapters together into one large web page (aka
1013 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne">the
1014 AllInOne page</a>).  The AllInOne page is the one used for further
1015 processing and translations.  Thanks to the fact that the
1016 <a href="http://moinmo.in/">MoinMoin</a> installation on
1017 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
1018 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">the Docbook format</a>, we can fetch
1019 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
1020 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
1021 manual.  This process also download images and transform image
1022 references to use the locally downloaded images.  The generated
1023 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
1024 using the <tt>documentation/scripts/get_manual</tt> program, and the
1025 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
1026 a handfull of images.  The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
1027 and epub versions of the English manual.  This is the basic step of
1028 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
1029 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
1030 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.</p>

1032 <p>But English documentation is not enough for us.  We want translated
1033 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
1034 track the English original.  For this we use the
1035 <a href="http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html">poxml</a> package,
1036 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
1037 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
1038 translation tools used by those translating free software.  The pot
1039 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
1040 files), which the translations update with the native language
1041 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
1042 original.  The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
1043 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
1044 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
1045 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml).  This translated (or partly
1046 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
1047 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
1048 of the documentation.</p>

1050 <p>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files.  We
1051 recommend using
1052 <a href="http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/">lokalize</a>,
1053 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
1054 <a href="http://pootle.translatehouse.org/">Poodle</a> or
1055 <a href="https://www.transifex.com/">Transifex</a>.  All we care about
1056 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository.  Updated
1057 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
1058 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc">bug reports
1059 against the debian-edu-doc package</a>.</p>

1061 <p>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
1062 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
1063 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
1064 this regard).  For this we transform the original PNG images to the
1065 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
1066 translated images by storing translated versions in
1067 images/$LANGUAGECODE/.  I am a bit unsure about the details here.  The
1068 package maintainers know more.</p>
