14

A few hours ago, the announcement for the first stable release of
15 Debian Edu Wheezy went out from the Debian publicity team. The
16 complete announcement text can be found at
17 the Debian News
18 section, translated to several languages. Please check it out.

19
20
There is one minor known problem that we will fix very soon. One
21 can not install a amd64 Thin Client Server using PXE, as the /var/
22 partition is too small. A workaround is to extend the partition (use
23 lvresize + resize2fs in tty 2 while installing).

80
On other news, I am happy to report that Freedombox based on Debian
81 Jessie is coming along quite well, and soon both Owncloud and using
82 Tor should be available for testers of the Freedombox solution. :) In
83 a few weeks I hope everything needed to test it is included in Debian.
84 The withsqlite package is already in Debian, and the plinth package is
85 pending in NEW. The third and vital part of that puzzle is the
86 metapackage/setup framework, which is still pending an upload. Join

99

The third wheezy based beta release of Debian Edu was wrapped up
100 today. This is the release announcement from Holger Levsen:

101
102

103
Hi,

104
105
it is my pleasure to announce the third beta release (beta 2 for
106 short) of Debian Edu /
107 Skolelinux based on Debian Wheezy!

108
109
Please test these images extensivly, if no new problems are found
110 we plan to do this final Debian Edu Wheezy release this coming
111 weekend. We are not aware of any major problems or blockers in beta2,
112 if you find something, please notify us immediately!

113
114
(More about the remaining steps for the Edu Wheezy release in
115 another mail to the edu list tonight or tomorrow...)

167
168
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

169
170
Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
171 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
172 configured school network. Immediately after installation a school
173 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
174 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
175 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
176 initial installation of the main server from CD or USB stick all other
177 machines can be installed via the network. The provided school server
178 provides LDAP database and Kerberos authentication service,
179 centralized home directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other
180 services. The desktop contains more than 60 educational software
181 packages and more are available from the Debian archive, and schools
182 can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE and Xfce desktop environment.

183
184
This is the seventh test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
185 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
186 Squeeze release.

187
188
Notes for upgrades from Alpha Prereleases

189
190
Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
191 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
192 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
193 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (1) Keep
194 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined on the mailing list. (2)
195 Accept the new version of gosa.conf and replace both contained admin
196 password placeholders with the password hashes found in the old one
197 (backup copy!). In both cases all users need to change their password
198 to make sure a password is set for CIFS access to their home
199 directory.

200
201
202
cheers,
203
Holger

212

213

I was introduced to the
214 Freedombox project
215 in 2010, when Eben Moglen presented his vision about serving the need
216 of non-technical people to keep their personal information private and
217 within the legal protection of their own homes. The idea is to give
218 people back the power over their network and machines, and return
219 Internet back to its intended peer-to-peer architecture. Instead of
220 depending on a central service, the Freedombox will give everyone
221 control over their own basic infrastructure.

222
223
I've intended to join the effort since then, but other tasks have
224 taken priority. But this summers nasty news about the misuse of trust
225 and privilege exercised by the "western" intelligence gathering
226 communities increased my eagerness to contribute to a point where I
227 actually started working on the project a while back.

228
229
The initial
230 Debian initiative based on the vision from Eben Moglen, is to
231 create a simple and cheap Debian based appliance that anyone can hook
232 up in their home and get access to secure and private services and
233 communication. The initial deployment platform have been the
234 Dreamplug,
235 which is a piece of hardware I do not own. So to be able to test what
236 the current Freedombox setup look like, I had to come up with a way to install
237 it on some hardware I do have access to. I have rewritten the
238 freedom-maker
239 image build framework to use .deb packages instead of only copying
240 setup into the boot images, and thanks to this rewrite I am able to
241 set up any machine supported by Debian Wheezy as a Freedombox, using
242 the previously mentioned deb (and a few support debs for packages
243 missing in Debian).

244
245
The current Freedombox setup consist of a set of bootstrapping
246 scripts
247 (freedombox-setup),
248 and a administrative web interface
249 (plinth + exmachina +
250 withsqlite), as well as a privacy enhancing proxy based on
251 privoxy
252 (freedombox-privoxy). There is also a web/javascript based XMPP
253 client (jwchat)
254 trying (unsuccessfully so far) to talk to the XMPP server
255 (ejabberd). The
256 web interface is pluggable, and the goal is to use it to enable OpenID
257 services, mesh network connectivity, use of TOR, etc, etc. Not much of
258 this is really working yet, see
259 the
260 project TODO for links to GIT repositories. Most of the code is
261 on github at the moment. The HTTP proxy is operational out of the
262 box, and the admin web interface can be used to add/remove plinth
263 users. I've not been able to do anything else with it so far, but
264 know there are several branches spread around github and other places
265 with lots of half baked features.

266
267
Anyway, if you want to have a look at the current state, the
268 following recipes should work to give you a test machine to poke
269 at.

270
271
Debian Wheezy amd64

272
273

274
275
Fetch normal Debian Wheezy installation ISO.

276
Boot from it, either as CD or USB stick.

277

Press [tab] on the boot prompt and add this as a boot argument
278 to the Debian installer:

279
url=http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/preseed-wheezy.dat

280
281
Answer the few language/region/password questions and pick disk to
282 install on.

283
284
When the installation is finished and the machine have rebooted a
285 few times, your Freedombox is ready for testing.

286
287

288
289
Raspberry Pi Raspbian

290
291

292
293
Fetch a Raspbian SD card image, create SD card.

294
Boot from SD card, extend file system to fill the card completely.

295

Log in and add this to /etc/sources.list:

296

297 deb http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox wheezy main
298

299

Run this as root:

300

301 wget -O - http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/BE1A583D.asc | \
302 apt-key add -
303 apt-get update
304 apt-get install freedombox-setup
305 /usr/lib/freedombox/setup
306

307
Reboot into your freshly created Freedombox.

308
309

310
311
You can test it on other architectures too, but because the
312 freedombox-privoxy package is binary, it will only work as intended on
313 the architectures where I have had time to build the binary and put it
314 in my APT repository. But do not let this stop you. It is only a
315 short "apt-get source -b freedombox-privoxy" away. :)

316
317
Note that by default Freedombox is a DHCP server on the
318 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, so if this is your subnet be careful and turn
319 off the DHCP server by running "update-rc.d isc-dhcp-server
320 disable" as root.

321
322
Please let me know if this works for you, or if you have any
323 problems. We gather on the IRC channel
324 #freedombox on
325 irc.debian.org and the
326 project
327 mailing list.

328
329
Once you get your freedombox operational, you can visit
330 http://your-host-name:8001/ to see the state of the plint
331 welcome screen (dead end - do not be surprised if you are unable to
332 get past it), and next visit http://your-host-name:8001/help/
333 to look at the rest of plinth. The default user is 'admin' and the
334 default password is 'secret'.

343

363
364
Hva er problemet, tenkter du kanskje? Et åpenbart problem er at
365 medienes kildevern i praksis blir radert ut.

376
377
De fleste partiene var mot, kun to partier stemte for. Høyre og
378 Arbeiderpartiet. Og både Høyre og Arbeiderpartiet i Oslo har
379 DLD-forkjempere på toppen av sine lister (har ikke sjekket de andre
380 fylkene). Det er dermed helt uaktuelt for meg å stemme på disse
381 partiene. Her er oversikten over partienes valglister i Oslo, med
382 informasjon om hvem som stemte hva i første DLD-votering i Stortinget,
383 basert på informasjon fra mine venner i
384 Holder de
385 Ord samt data.stortinget.no.

621

The second wheezy based beta release of Debian Edu was wrapped up
622 today, slightly delayed because of some bugs in the initial Windows
623 integration fixes . This is the release announcement:

624
625
New features for Debian Edu 7.1+edu0~b1 released 2013-08-22

626
627
These are the release notes for Debian Edu / Skolelinux
628 7.1+edu0~b1, based on Debian with codename "Wheezy".

629
630
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

631
632
Debian Edu, also known as
633 Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
634 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
635 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
636 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
637 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
638 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
639 the main server from CD or USB stick all other machines can be
640 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
641 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
642 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The
643 desktop contains
644 more
645 than 60 educational software packages and more are available from
646 the Debian archive, and schools can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE
647 and Xfce desktop environment.

648
649
This is the sixth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically this
650 is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the Squeeze
651 release.

652
653
ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
654 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
655 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
656 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (1) Keep

658 on
659 the mailing list. (2) Accept the new version of gosa.conf and
660 replace both contained admin password placeholders with the password
661 hashes found in the old one (backup copy!). In both cases every user
662 need to change their their password to make sure a password is set for
663 CIFS access to their home directory.

664
665
Software updates

666
667

668
669
Added ssh askpass packages to default installation, to ensure ssh
670 work also without a attached tty.

671
Add the command-not-found package to the default installation to
672 make it easier to figure out where to find missing command line
673 tools. Please note, that the command 'update-command-not-found'
674 has to be run as root to actually make it useful (internet access
675 required).

676
677

678
679
Other changes

680
681

682
683
Adjusted the USB stick ISO image build to include every tool
684 needed for desktop=xfce installations.

685
Adjust thin-client-server task to work when installing from USB
686 stick ISO image.

687
Made new grub artwork (changed png from indexed to RGB format).

688
Minor cleanup in the CUPS setup.

689
Make sure that bootstrapping of the Samba domain really happens
690 during installation of the main server and adjust SID handling to
691 cope with this.

692
Make Samba passwords changeable (again) via GOsa².

693
Fix generation of LM and NT password hashes via GOsa² to avoid
694 empty password hashes.

695
Adapted Samba machine domain joining to latest change in the
696 smbldap-tools Perl package, fixing bugs blocking Windows machines
697 from joining the Samba domain.

753

754

Earlier, I reported about
755 my
756 problems using an Intel SSD 520 Series 180 GB disk. Friday I was
757 told by IBM that the original disk should be thrown away. And as
758 there no longer was a problem if I bricked the firmware, I decided
759 today to try to install Intel firmware to replace the Lenovo firmware
760 currently on the disk.

761
762
I searched the Intel site for firmware, and found
763 issdfut_2.0.4.iso
764 (aka Intel SATA Solid-State Drive Firmware Update Tool) which
765 according to the site should contain the latest firmware for SSD
766 disks. I inserted the broken disk in one of my spare laptops and
767 booted the ISO from a USB stick. The disk was recognized, but the
768 program claimed the newest firmware already were installed and refused
769 to insert any Intel firmware. So no change, and the disk is still
770 unable to handle write load. :( I guess the only way to get them
771 working would be if Lenovo releases new firmware. No idea how likely
772 that is. Anyway, just blogging about this test for completeness. I
773 got a working Samsung disk, and see no point in spending more time on
774 the broken disks.

779
90 percent done with the Norwegian draft translation of Free Culture

780

781

782

783

It has been a while since my last update. Since last summer, I
784 have worked on a Norwegian
785 docbook version of the 2004 book
786 Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig,
787 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
788 law. Yesterday, I finally broken the 90% mark, when counting the
789 number of strings to translate. Due to real life constraints, I have
790 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
791 I found time to work on it again. Still lots of work left, but the
792 first draft is nearing completion. I created a graph to show the
793 progress of the translation:

794
795

796
797
When the first draft is done, the translated text need to be
798 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG
799 drawings need to be fixed. There are probably also some index entries
800 missing that need to be added. This can be done by comparing the
801 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
802 English docbook version with the paper version. Last, the colophon
803 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
804 done. I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
805 of the index pages. All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
806 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
807 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.

808
809
There is still need for translators and people with docbook
810 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
811 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
812 translation and proof reading. And I would like the figures to be
813 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them. Any SVG master
814 around? There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.
815 If you want to help, please get in touch with me, and check out the
816 project files currently available from
817 github.

818
819
If you are curious what the translated book currently look like,
820 the updated
821 PDF
822 and
823 EPUB
824 are published on github. The HTML version is published as well, but
825 github hand it out with MIME type text/plain, confusing browsers, so I
826 saw no point in linking to that version.

834

835

The first wheezy based beta release of Debian Edu was wrapped up
836 today. This is the release announcement:

837
838
New features for Debian Edu 7.1+edu0~b0 released
839 2013-07-27

840
841
These are the release notes for for Debian Edu / Skolelinux
842 7.1+edu0~b0, based on Debian with codename "Wheezy".

843
844
About Debian Edu and Skolelinux

845
846
Debian Edu, also known as
847 Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
848 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
849 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
850 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
851 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
852 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
853 the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all other machines can be
854 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
855 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
856 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The
857 desktop contains
858 more
859 than 60 educational software packages and more are available from
860 the Debian archive, and schools can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE
861 and Xfce desktop environment.

862
863
This is the fifth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
864 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
865 Squeeze release.

866
867
ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
868 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
869 release.

870
871
Software updates

872
873

874
875
Switched roaming workstation profiles from wicd to network-manager
876 for network configuration, as wicd didn't work any more.

877
Changed version numbers of patched gosa and libpam-mklocaluser
878 packages to make sure our locally patched versions will be replaced
879 by the official packages when they are released from Debian. Those
880 installing alpha version need to reinstall or manually downgrade gosa
881 and libpam-mklocaluser.

882
Added bluetooth tools to the default desktop (bluedevil, blueman).

883
Added tools for sharing the desktop on KDE (krdc, krfb).

884
Added valgrind to the default installation for easier debugging of
885 crash bugs.

886
887

888
889
Other changes

890
891

892
893
Fixed artwork package to work with gnome, no longer break
894 desktop=gnome installations.

895
Adjusted installer to now work when forced to use a proxy with the
896 netinst CD.

897
Fixed code detecting and setting/loading hardware specific
898 setup/firmware to work more robust out of the box.

899
Adjusted Kerberos setup to detect realm and server settings at
900 install time instead of dynamically at run time. This avoid a crash
901 with krb5-auth-dialog on diskless workstations without a DNS name.

902
Worked around misfeature in network-manager not calling the dhclient
903 exit hooks, causing automatic proxy configuration and automatic host
904 name setting at run time to work again.

905
Fixed feature setting the default Iceweasel start page from URL
906 fetched from LDAP, to allow schools to set the global default by
907 updating the dc=skole,dc=skolelinux,dc=no LDAP object.

908
Changed default host name on all networked machines to be unique
909 (generated from MAC or reverse DNS) after boot.

910
Adjusted partition sizes to make sure they are big enough.

911
912

913
914
Known issues

915
916

917
918
Grub is missing the new artwork.

919
KDE fail to understand the wpad.dat file provided, causing it to
920 not use the http proxy as it should.

921
Chromium also fail to use the proxy.

966

967

Today I switched to
968 my
969 new laptop. I've previously written about the problems I had with
970 my new Thinkpad X230, which was delivered with an
971 180
972 GB Intel SSD disk with Lenovo firmware that did not handle
973 sustained writes. My hardware supplier have been very forthcoming in
974 trying to find a solution, and after first trying with another
975 identical 180 GB disks they decided to send me a 256 GB Samsung SSD
976 disk instead to fix it once and for all. The Samsung disk survived
977 the installation of Debian with encrypted disks (filling the disk with
978 random data during installation killed the first two), and I thus
979 decided to trust it with my data. I have installed it as a Debian Edu
980 Wheezy roaming workstation hooked up with my Debian Edu Squeeze main
981 server at home using Kerberos and LDAP, and will use it as my work
982 station from now on.

983
984
As this is a solid state disk with no moving parts, I believe the
985 Debian Wheezy default installation need to be tuned a bit to increase
986 performance and increase life time of the disk. The Linux kernel and
987 user space applications do not yet adjust automatically to such
988 environment. To make it easier for my self, I created a draft Debian
989 package ssd-setup to handle this tuning. The

991 for the ssd-setup package is available from collab-maint, and it
992 is set up to adjust the setup of the machine by just installing the
993 package. If there is any non-SSD disk in the machine, the package
994 will refuse to install, as I did not try to write any logic to sort
995 file systems in SSD and non-SSD file systems.

996
997
I consider the package a draft, as I am a bit unsure how to best
998 set up Debian Wheezy with an SSD. It is adjusted to my use case,
999 where I set up the machine with one large encrypted partition (in
1000 addition to /boot), put LVM on top of this and set up partitions on
1001 top of this again. See the README file in the package source for the
1002 references I used to pick the settings. At the moment these
1003 parameters are tuned:

1004
1005

1006
1007
Set up cryptsetup to pass TRIM commands to the physical disk
1008 (adding discard to /etc/crypttab)

1009
1010
Set up LVM to pass on TRIM commands to the underlying device (in
1011 this case a cryptsetup partition) by changing issue_discards from
1012 0 to 1 in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf.

1013
1014
Set relatime as a file system option for ext3 and ext4 file
1015 systems.

1016
1017
Tell swap to use TRIM commands by adding 'discard' to
1018 /etc/fstab.

1019
1020
Change I/O scheduler from cfq to deadline using a udev rule.

1021
1022
Run fstrim on every ext3 and ext4 file system every night (from
1023 cron.daily).

1024
1025
Adjust sysctl values vm.swappiness to 1 and vm.vfs_cache_pressure
1026 to 50 to reduce the kernel eagerness to swap out processes.

1027
1028

1029
1030
During installation, I cancelled the part where the installer fill
1031 the disk with random data, as this would kill the SSD performance for
1032 little gain. My goal with the encrypted file system is to ensure
1033 those stealing my laptop end up with a brick and not a working
1034 computer. I have no hope in keeping the really resourceful people
1035 from getting the data on the disk (see
1036 XKCD #538 for an explanation why).
1037 Thus I concluded that adding the discard option to crypttab is the
1038 right thing to do.

1039
1040
I considered using the noop I/O scheduler, as several recommended
1041 it for SSD, but others recommended deadline and a benchmark I found
1042 indicated that deadline might be better for interactive use.

1043
1044
I also considered using the 'discard' file system option for ext3
1045 and ext4, but read that it would give a performance hit ever time a
1046 file is removed, and thought it best to that that slowdown once a day
1047 instead of during my work.

1048
1049
My package do not set up tmpfs on /var/run, /var/lock and /tmp, as
1050 this is already done by Debian Edu.

1051
1052
I have not yet started on the user space tuning. I expect
1053 iceweasel need some tuning, and perhaps other applications too, but
1054 have not yet had time to investigate those parts.

1055
1056
The package should work on Ubuntu too, but I have not yet tested it
1057 there.

1058
1059
As for the answer to the question in the title of this blog post,
1060 as far as I know, the only solution I know about is to replace the
1061 disk. It might be possible to flash it with Intel firmware instead of
1062 the Lenovo firmware. But I have not tried and did not want to do so
1063 without approval from Lenovo as I wanted to keep the warranty on the
1064 disk until a solution was found and they wanted the broken disks
1065 back.
