191 <p>About Debian Edu and Skolelinux
</p>
193 <p>Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
194 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
195 configured school network. Immediately after installation a school
196 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
197 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
198 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
199 initial installation of the main server from CD or USB stick all other
200 machines can be installed via the network. The provided school server
201 provides LDAP database and Kerberos authentication service,
202 centralized home directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other
203 services. The desktop contains more than
60 educational software
204 packages and more are available from the Debian archive, and schools
205 can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE and Xfce desktop environment.
</p>
207 <p>This is the seventh test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically
208 this is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the
211 <p>Notes for upgrades from Alpha Prereleases
</p>
213 <p>Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
214 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
215 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
216 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (
1) Keep
217 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined on the mailing list. (
2)
218 Accept the new version of gosa.conf and replace both contained admin
219 password placeholders with the password hashes found in the old one
220 (backup copy!). In both cases all users need to change their password
221 to make sure a password is set for CIFS access to their home

241 <div class=

2013</div>
242 <div class=
"body"><p>I was introduced to the
243 <a href=
"http://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/">Freedombox project
</a>
244 in
2010, when Eben Moglen presented his vision about serving the need
245 of non-technical people to keep their personal information private and
246 within the legal protection of their own homes. The idea is to give
247 people back the power over their network and machines, and return
248 Internet back to its intended peer-to-peer architecture. Instead of
249 depending on a central service, the Freedombox will give everyone
250 control over their own basic infrastructure.
</p>
252 <p>I've intended to join the effort since then, but other tasks have
253 taken priority. But this summers nasty news about the misuse of trust
254 and privilege exercised by the "western" intelligence gathering
255 communities increased my eagerness to contribute to a point where I
256 actually started working on the project a while back.
</p>
258 <p>The
<a href=
"https://alioth.debian.org/projects/freedombox/">initial
259 Debian initiative
</a> based on the vision from Eben Moglen, is to
260 create a simple and cheap Debian based appliance that anyone can hook
261 up in their home and get access to secure and private services and
262 communication. The initial deployment platform have been the
263 <a href=
"http://www.globalscaletechnologies.com/t-dreamplugdetails.aspx">Dreamplug
</a>,
264 which is a piece of hardware I do not own. So to be able to test what
265 the current Freedombox setup look like, I had to come up with a way to install
266 it on some hardware I do have access to. I have rewritten the
267 <a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/freedom-maker">freedom-maker
</a>
268 image build framework to use .deb packages instead of only copying
269 setup into the boot images, and thanks to this rewrite I am able to
270 set up any machine supported by Debian Wheezy as a Freedombox, using
271 the previously mentioned deb (and a few support debs for packages
272 missing in Debian).
</p>
274 <p>The current Freedombox setup consist of a set of bootstrapping
276 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/freedombox-setup">freedombox-setup
</a>),
277 and a administrative web interface
278 (
<a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/Plinth">plinth
</a> + exmachina +
279 withsqlite), as well as a privacy enhancing proxy based on
280 <a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/privoxy">privoxy
</a>
281 (freedombox-privoxy). There is also a web/javascript based XMPP
282 client (
<a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/jwchat">jwchat
</a>)
283 trying (unsuccessfully so far) to talk to the XMPP server
284 (
<a href=
"http://packages.qa.debian.org/ejabberd">ejabberd
</a>). The
285 web interface is pluggable, and the goal is to use it to enable OpenID
286 services, mesh network connectivity, use of TOR, etc, etc. Not much of
287 this is really working yet, see
288 <a href=
"https://github.com/NickDaly/freedombox-todos/blob/master/TODO">the
289 project TODO
</a> for links to GIT repositories. Most of the code is
290 on github at the moment. The HTTP proxy is operational out of the
291 box, and the admin web interface can be used to add/remove plinth
292 users. I've not been able to do anything else with it so far, but
293 know there are several branches spread around github and other places
294 with lots of half baked features.
</p>
296 <p>Anyway, if you want to have a look at the current state, the
297 following recipes should work to give you a test machine to poke
300 <p><strong>Debian Wheezy amd64
</strong></p>
304 <li>Fetch normal Debian Wheezy installation ISO.
</li>
305 <li>Boot from it, either as CD or USB stick.
</li>
306 <li><p>Press [tab] on the boot prompt and add this as a boot argument

310 <li>Answer the few language/region/password questions and pick disk to
313 <li>When the installation is finished and the machine have rebooted a
314 few times, your Freedombox is ready for testing.
</li>
318 <p><strong>Raspberry Pi Raspbian
</strong></p>
322 <li>Fetch a Raspbian SD card image, create SD card.
</li>
323 <li>Boot from SD card, extend file system to fill the card completely.
</li>
324 <li><p>Log in and add this to /etc/sources.list:
</p>
326 deb
<a href=
"http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/">http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox
</a> wheezy main
328 <li><p>Run this as root:
</p>
330 wget -O - http://www.reinholdtsen.name/freedombox/BE1A583D.asc | \
333 apt-get install freedombox-setup
334 /usr/lib/freedombox/setup
336 <li>Reboot into your freshly created Freedombox.
</li>
340 <p>You can test it on other architectures too, but because the
341 freedombox-privoxy package is binary, it will only work as intended on
342 the architectures where I have had time to build the binary and put it
343 in my APT repository. But do not let this stop you. It is only a
344 short "
<tt>apt-get source -b freedombox-privoxy
</tt>" away. :)</p>
346 <p>Note that by default Freedombox is a DHCP server on the
347 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, so if this is your subnet be careful and turn
348 off the DHCP server by running "<tt>update-rc.d isc-dhcp-server
349 disable
</tt>" as root.</p>
351 <p>Please let me know if this works for you, or if you have any
352 problems. We gather on the IRC channel
353 <a href="irc://irc.debian.org:

354 irc.debian.org and the
355 <a href="http://lists.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/freedombox-discuss
">project
356 mailing list</a>.</p>
358 <p>Once you get your freedombox operational, you can visit
359 <tt>http://your-host-name:8001/</tt> to see the state of the plint
360 welcome screen (dead end - do not be surprised if you are unable to
361 get past it), and next visit <tt>http://your-host-name:8001/help/</tt>
362 to look at the rest of plinth. The default user is 'admin' and the
363 default password is 'secret'.</p>

385 <a href="http://beta.holderdeord.no/issues/innfore-datalagringsdirektivet
">Datalagringsdirektivet
386 (DLD)</a>, og innebærer at alle innbyggerne og andre innenfor Norges

400 medienes kildevern i praksis blir radert ut.
413 Arbeiderpartiet.
416 partiene. Her er oversikten over partienes valglister i Oslo, med

671 <p><strong>About Debian Edu and Skolelinux
</strong></p>
673 <p><a href=
"http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu, also known as
674 Skolelinux
</a>, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
675 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
676 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
677 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
678 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
679 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
680 the main server from CD or USB stick all other machines can be
681 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
682 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
683 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

687 the Debian archive, and schools can choose between KDE, Gnome, LXDE
688 and Xfce desktop environment.

690 <p>This is the sixth test release based on Debian Wheezy. Basically this
691 is an updated and slightly improved version compared to the Squeeze
694 <p>ALERT: Alpha based installations should reinstall or downgrade the
695 versions of gosa and libpam-mklocaluser to the ones used in this beta
696 release. Both alpha and beta0 based installations should reinstall or
697 deal with gosa.conf manually; there are two options: (
1) Keep
698 gosa.conf and edit this file as outlined
699 <a href=
"http://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/2013/08/msg00127.html">on
700 the mailing list
</a>. (
2) Accept the new version of gosa.conf and
701 replace both contained admin password placeholders with the password
702 hashes found in the old one (backup copy!). In both cases every user
703 need to change their their password to make sure a password is set for
704 CIFS access to their home directory.
</p>
706 <p><strong>Software updates
</strong></p>
710 <li>Added ssh askpass packages to default installation, to ensure ssh
711 work also without a attached tty.
</li>
712 <li>Add the command-not-found package to the default installation to
713 make it easier to figure out where to find missing command line
714 tools. Please note, that the command 'update-command-not-found'
715 has to be run as root to actually make it useful (internet access
720 <p><strong>Other changes
</strong></p>
724 <li>Adjusted the USB stick ISO image build to include every tool
725 needed for desktop=xfce installations.
</li>
726 <li>Adjust thin-client-server task to work when installing from USB
727 stick ISO image.
</li>
728 <li>Made new grub artwork (changed png from indexed to RGB format).
</li>
729 <li>Minor cleanup in the CUPS setup.
</li>
730 <li>Make sure that bootstrapping of the Samba domain really happens
731 during installation of the main server and adjust SID handling to
733 <li>Make Samba passwords changeable (again) via GOsa².
</li>
734 <li>Fix generation of LM and NT password hashes via GOsa² to avoid
735 empty password hashes.
</li>
736 <li>Adapted Samba machine domain joining to latest change in the
737 smbldap-tools Perl package, fixing bugs blocking Windows machines
738 from joining the Samba domain.
</li>
742 <p><strong>Known issues
</strong></p>
746 <li>KDE fails to understand the wpad.dat file provided, causing it to
747 not use the http proxy as it should.
</li>
748 <li>Chromium also fails to use the proxy when using the KDE desktop
749 (using the KDE configuration).

805 there no longer was a problem if I bricked the firmware, I decided
806 today to try to install Intel firmware to replace the Lenovo firmware

</p>
809 <p>I searched the Intel site for firmware, and found

812 according to the site should contain the latest firmware for SSD
813 disks. I inserted the broken disk in one of my spare laptops and
814 booted the ISO from a USB stick. The disk was recognized, but the
815 program claimed the newest firmware already were installed and refused
816 to insert any Intel firmware. So no change, and the disk is still
817 unable to handle write load. :( I guess the only way to get them
818 working would be if Lenovo releases new firmware. No idea how likely
819 that is. Anyway, just blogging about this test for completeness. I
820 got a working Samsung disk, and see no point in spending more time on
821 the broken disks.

837 have worked on a Norwegian
838 <a href=

</a> version of the
2004 book
839 <a href=
"http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture
</a> by Lawrence Lessig,
840 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
841 law. Yesterday, I finally broken the
90% mark, when counting the
842 number of strings to translate. Due to real life constraints, I have
843 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
844 I found time to work on it again. Still lots of work left, but the
845 first draft is nearing completion. I created a graph to show the
846 progress of the translation:
</p>
848 <p><img width=
"80%" align=
"center" src=
"https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/free-culture-lessig/raw/master/progress.png"></p>
850 <p>When the first draft is done, the translated text need to be
851 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG
852 drawings need to be fixed. There are probably also some index entries
853 missing that need to be added. This can be done by comparing the
854 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
855 English docbook version with the paper version. Last, the colophon
856 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
857 done. I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
858 of the index pages. All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
859 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
860 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.
</p>
862 <p>There is still need for translators and people with docbook
863 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
864 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
865 translation and proof reading. And I would like the figures to be
866 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them. Any SVG master
867 around? There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.

911 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
912 the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all other machines can be
913 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
914 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
915 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

1033 <a href=
"http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/The_Thinkpad_is_dead__long_live_the_Thinkpad_X230_.html">my
1034 new laptop
</a>. I've previously written about the problems I had with
1035 my new Thinkpad X230, which was delivered with an
1036 <a href=
"http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Intel_SSD_520_Series_180_GB_with_Lenovo_firmware_still_lock_up_from_sustained_writes.html">180
1037 GB Intel SSD disk with Lenovo firmware
</a> that did not handle
1038 sustained writes. My hardware supplier have been very forthcoming in
1039 trying to find a solution, and after first trying with another
1040 identical
180 GB disks they decided to send me a
256 GB Samsung SSD
1041 disk instead to fix it once and for all. The Samsung disk survived
1042 the installation of Debian with encrypted disks (filling the disk with
1043 random data during installation killed the first two), and I thus
1044 decided to trust it with my data. I have installed it as a Debian Edu
1045 Wheezy roaming workstation hooked up with my Debian Edu Squeeze main
1046 server at home using Kerberos and LDAP, and will use it as my work
1047 station from now on.
</p>
1049 <p>As this is a solid state disk with no moving parts, I believe the
1050 Debian Wheezy default installation need to be tuned a bit to increase
1051 performance and increase life time of the disk. The Linux kernel and
1052 user space applications do not yet adjust automatically to such
1053 environment. To make it easier for my self, I created a draft Debian
1054 package
<tt>ssd-setup
</tt> to handle this tuning. The
1055 <a href=
"http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=collab-maint/ssd-setup.git">source
1056 for the ssd-setup package
</a> is available from collab-maint, and it
1057 is set up to adjust the setup of the machine by just installing the
1058 package. If there is any non-SSD disk in the machine, the package
1059 will refuse to install, as I did not try to write any logic to sort
1060 file systems in SSD and non-SSD file systems.
</p>
1062 <p>I consider the package a draft, as I am a bit unsure how to best
1063 set up Debian Wheezy with an SSD. It is adjusted to my use case,
1064 where I set up the machine with one large encrypted partition (in
1065 addition to /boot), put LVM on top of this and set up partitions on
1066 top of this again. See the README file in the package source for the
1067 references I used to pick the settings. At the moment these
1068 parameters are tuned:
</p>
1072 <li>Set up cryptsetup to pass TRIM commands to the physical disk
1073 (adding discard to /etc/crypttab)
</li>
1075 <li>Set up LVM to pass on TRIM commands to the underlying device (in
1076 this case a cryptsetup partition) by changing issue_discards from
1077 0 to
1 in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf.
</li>
1079 <li>Set relatime as a file system option for ext3 and ext4 file
1082 <li>Tell swap to use TRIM commands by adding 'discard' to
1085 <li>Change I/O scheduler from cfq to deadline using a udev rule.
</li>
1087 <li>Run fstrim on every ext3 and ext4 file system every night (from
1090 <li>Adjust sysctl values vm.swappiness to
1 and vm.vfs_cache_pressure
1091 to
50 to reduce the kernel eagerness to swap out processes.
</li>
1095 <p>During installation, I cancelled the part where the installer fill
1096 the disk with random data, as this would kill the SSD performance for
1097 little gain. My goal with the encrypted file system is to ensure
1098 those stealing my laptop end up with a brick and not a working
1099 computer. I have no hope in keeping the really resourceful people
1100 from getting the data on the disk (see
1101 <a href=
"http://xkcd.com/538/">XKCD #
538</a> for an explanation why).
1102 Thus I concluded that adding the discard option to crypttab is the
1103 right thing to do.
</p>
1105 <p>I considered using the noop I/O scheduler, as several recommended
1106 it for SSD, but others recommended deadline and a benchmark I found
1107 indicated that deadline might be better for interactive use.
</p>
1109 <p>I also considered using the 'discard' file system option for ext3
1110 and ext4, but read that it would give a performance hit ever time a
1111 file is removed, and thought it best to that that slowdown once a day
1112 instead of during my work.
</p>
1114 <p>My package do not set up tmpfs on /var/run, /var/lock and /tmp, as
1115 this is already done by Debian Edu.
</p>
1117 <p>I have not yet started on the user space tuning. I expect
1118 iceweasel need some tuning, and perhaps other applications too, but
1119 have not yet had time to investigate those parts.
</p>
1121 <p>The package should work on Ubuntu too, but I have not yet tested it
1124 <p>As for the answer to the question in the title of this blog post,
1125 as far as I know, the only solution I know about is to replace the
1126 disk. It might be possible to flash it with Intel firmware instead of
1127 the Lenovo firmware. But I have not tried and did not want to do so
1128 without approval from Lenovo as I wanted to keep the warranty on the
1129 disk until a solution was found and they wanted the broken disks
