25 <div class="body"><p>Two years later, I am still not sure if it is legal here in Norway
26 to use or publish a video in H.264 or MPEG4 format edited by the
27 commercially licensed video editors, without limiting the use to
28 create "personal" or "non-commercial" videos or get a license
29 agreement with <a href="http://www.mpegla.com">MPEG LA</a>. If one
30 want to publish and broadcast video in a non-personal or commercial
31 setting, it might be that those tools can not be used, or that video
32 format can not be used, without breaking their copyright license. I
33 am not sure.
34 <a href="http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Trenger_en_avtale_med_MPEG_LA_for___publisere_og_kringkaste_H_264_video_.html">Back
35 then</a>, I found that the copyright license terms for Adobe Premiere
36 and Apple Final Cut Pro both specified that one could not use the
37 program to produce anything else without a patent license from MPEG
38 LA. The issue is not limited to those two products, though. Other
39 much used products like those from Avid and Sorenson Media have terms
40 of use are similar to those from Adobe and Apple. The complicating
41 factor making me unsure if those terms have effect in Norway or not is
42 that the patents in question are not valid in Norway, but copyright
43 licenses are.</p>

312 Skolelinux</a>, is used quite a lot in Germany, and one of the people
313 involved is Bernd Zeitzen, who show up on the project mailing lists
314 from time to time with interesting questions and tips on how to adjust
315 the setup. I managed to interview him this summer.</p>

317 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?</strong></p>

319 <p>My name is Bernd Zeitzen and I'm married with Hedda, a self
320 employed physiotherapist. My former profession is tool maker, but I
321 haven't worked for 30 years in this job. 30 years ago I started to
322 support my wife and become her officeworker and a few years later the
323 administrator for a small computer network, today based on Ubuntu
324 Server (Samba, OpenVPN). For her daily work she has to use Windows
325 Desktops because the software she needs to organize her business only
326 works with Windows . :-(</p>

328 <p>In 1988 we started with one PC and DOS, then I learned to use
329 Windows 98, 2000, XP, …, 8, Ubuntu, MacOSX. Today we are running a
330 Linux server with 6 Windows clients and 10 persons (teacher of
331 children with special needs, speech therapist, occupational therapist,
332 psychologist and officeworkers) using our Samba shares via OpenVPN to
333 work with the documentations of our patients.</p>

335 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
336 project?</strong></p>

338 <p>Two years ago a friend of mine asked me, if I want to get a job in
339 his school (<a href="http://www.gymnasium-harsewinkel.de/">Gymnasium
340 Harsewinkel</a>). They started with Skolelinux / Debian Edu and they
341 were looking for people to give support to the teachers using the
342 software and the network and teaching the pupils increasing their
343 computer skills in optional lessons. I'm spending 4-6 hours a week
344 with this job.</p>

346 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
347 Edu?</strong></p>

349 <p>The independence.</p>

351 <p>First: Every person is allowed to use, share and develop the
352 software. Even if you are poor, you are allowed to use the software
353 included in Skolelinux/Debian Edu and all the other Free Software.</p>

355 <p>Second: The software runs on old machines and this gives us the
356 possibility to recycle computers, weeded out from offices. The
357 servers and desktops are running for more than two years and they are
358 working reliable. </p>

360 <p>We have two servers (one tjener and one terminal server), 45
361 workstations in three classrooms and seven laptops as a mobile
362 solution for all classrooms. These machines are all booting from the
363 terminal server. In the moment we are installing 30 laptops as mobile
364 workstations. Then the pupils have the possibility to work with these
365 machines in their classrooms. Internet access is realized by a WLAN
366 router, connected to the schools network. This is all done without a
367 dedicated system administrator or a computer science teacher.</p>

369 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
370 Edu?</strong></p>

373 isn't cool. It's software for freaks using the command line. &lt;Irony
374 off&gt; They don't realize the stability of the system. </p>

386 teachers who learned to use Windows and MS Office. They buy a PC with

388 Office. They don't know about the possibility to use Free Software
389 instead. Another problem are the publisher of school books. They
390 develop their software, added to the school books, for Windows.</p>

445 <div class="body"><p>The <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu / Skolelinux
446 project</a> provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
447 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
448 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation. This text is about how the
449 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.</p>

451 <p>One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
452 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
453 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
454 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
455 in sync. And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
456 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
457 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
458 edit the documentation using a web browser. We also want it to be
459 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
460 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
461 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
462 goals.</p>

464 <p>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
465 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/">Debian
466 wiki</a>, as several wiki pages written in English. It consist of one
467 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
468 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
469 chapters together into one large web page (aka
470 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne">the
471 AllInOne page</a>). The AllInOne page is the one used for further
472 processing and translations. Thanks to the fact that the
473 <a href="http://moinmo.in/">MoinMoin</a> installation on
474 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
475 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">the Docbook format</a>, we can fetch
476 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
477 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
478 manual. This process also download images and transform image
479 references to use the locally downloaded images. The generated
480 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
481 using the <tt>documentation/scripts/get_manual</tt> program, and the
482 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
483 a handfull of images. The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
484 and epub versions of the English manual. This is the basic step of
485 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
486 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
487 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.</p>

489 <p>But English documentation is not enough for us. We want translated
490 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
491 track the English original. For this we use the
492 <a href="http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html">poxml</a> package,
493 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
494 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
495 translation tools used by those translating free software. The pot
496 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
497 files), which the translations update with the native language
498 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
499 original. The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
500 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
501 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
502 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml). This translated (or partly
503 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
504 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
505 of the documentation.</p>

507 <p>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files. We
508 recommend using
509 <a href="http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/">lokalize</a>,
510 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
511 <a href="http://pootle.translatehouse.org/">Poodle</a> or
512 <a href="https://www.transifex.com/">Transifex</a>. All we care about
513 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository. Updated
514 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
515 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc">bug reports
516 against the debian-edu-doc package</a>.</p>

518 <p>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
519 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
520 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
521 this regard). For this we transform the original PNG images to the
522 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
523 translated images by storing translated versions in
524 images/$LANGUAGECODE/. I am a bit unsure about the details here. The
525 package maintainers know more.</p>

675 <div class="body"><p>I've been following <a href="http://www.getgnash.org/">the Gnash
676 project</a> for quite a while now. It is a free software
677 implementation of Adobe Flash, both a standalone player and a browser
678 plugin. Gnash implement support for the AVM1 format (and not the
679 newer AVM2 format - see
680 <a href="http://lightspark.github.io/">Lightspark</a> for that one),
681 allowing several flash based sites to work. Thanks to the friendly
682 developers at Youtube, it also work with Youtube videos, because the
683 Javascript code at Youtube detect Gnash and serve a AVM1 player to
684 those users. :) Would be great if someone found time to implement AVM2
685 support, but it has not happened yet. If you install both Lightspark
686 and Gnash, Lightspark will invoke Gnash if it find a AVM1 flash file,
687 so you can get both handled as free software. Unfortunately,
688 Lightspark so far only implement a small subset of AVM2, and many
689 sites do not work yet.</p>

691 <p>A few months ago, I started looking at
692 <a href="http://scan.coverity.com/">Coverity</a>, the static source
693 checker used to find heaps and heaps of bugs in free software (thanks
694 to the donation of a scanning service to free software projects by the
695 company developing this non-free code checker), and Gnash was one of
696 the projects I decided to check out. Coverity is able to find lock
697 errors, memory errors, dead code and more. A few days ago they even
698 extended it to also be able to find the heartbleed bug in OpenSSL.
699 There are heaps of checks being done on the instrumented code, and the
700 amount of bogus warnings is quite low compared to the other static
701 code checkers I have tested over the years.</p>

703 <p>Since a few weeks ago, I've been working with the other Gnash
704 developers squashing bugs discovered by Coverity. I was quite happy
705 today when I checked the current status and saw that of the 777 issues
706 detected so far, 374 are marked as fixed. This make me confident that
707 the next Gnash release will be more stable and more dependable than
708 the previous one. Most of the reported issues were and are in the
709 test suite, but it also found a few in the rest of the code.</p>

771 trivial to install the hardware dependent package we all may want to
772 have installed on our machines. I've not been able to find a way to
773 get tasksel to tell you exactly which packages it plan to install
774 before doing the installation. So if you are curious or careful,
775 check the output from the isenkram-* command line tools first.</p>

777 <p>The information about which packages are handling which hardware is
778 fetched either from the isenkram package itself in
779 /usr/share/isenkram/, from git.debian.org or from the APT package
780 database (using the Modaliases header). The APT package database
781 parsing have caused a nasty resource leak in the isenkram daemon (bugs
782 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/719837">#719837</a> and
783 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/730704">#730704</a>). The cause is in
784 the python-apt code (bug
785 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/745487">#745487</a>), but using a
786 workaround I was able to get rid of the file descriptor leak and
787 reduce the memory leak from ~30 MiB per hardware detection down to
788 around 2 MiB per hardware detection. It should make the desktop
789 daemon a lot more useful. The fix is in version 0.7 uploaded to
790 unstable today.</p>

792 <p>I believe the current way of mapping hardware to packages in
793 Isenkram is is a good draft, but in the future I expect isenkram to
794 use the AppStream data source for this. A proposal for getting proper
795 AppStream support into Debian is floating around as
796 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DEP-11">DEP-11</a>, and
797 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2014/Projects#SummerOfCode2014.2FProjects.2FAppStreamDEP11Implementation.AppStream.2FDEP-11_for_the_Debian_Archive">GSoC
798 project</a> will take place this summer to improve the situation. I
799 look forward to seeing the result, and welcome patches for isenkram to
800 start using the information when it is ready.</p>

830 today a major mile stone was reached.</p>

833 created the system images were accepted into Debian Unstable. It was
834 the freedombox-setup package, which is used to configure the images
835 during build and on the first boot. Now all one need to get going is

837 Debian. And once the freedombox-setup package enter testing, we can
838 build everything directly from Debian. :)</p>

887 systemd as the boot system. It will become the default for Linux in
888 Jessie, so we need to make sure it is usable on the Freedombox. I did
889 a simple test a few weeks ago, and noticed dnsmasq failed to start
890 during boot when using systemd. I suspect there are other problems
891 too. :) To detect problems, there is a test suite included, which can
892 be run from the plinth web interface.</p>
