  26 Skolelinux</a>, there are quite a lot of educational software.
  27 Created to help teachers teach, and pupils learn.  We have tried to
  28 tag them all using debtags use::learning and role::program, and using
  29 the debtags I was happy to be able to create a collage of the
  30 educational software packages installed by default, sorted by the
  31 debtag field.  Here it is.  Click on a image to learn more about the
  32 program.</p>

 168 I could install Linux on a Packard Bell EasyNote LV computer
 169 preinstalled with Windows 8</a>.  I found a solution, but am horrified
 170 with the obstacles put in the way of Linux users on a laptop with UEFI
 171 and Windows 8.</p>

 173 <p>I never found out if the cause of my problems were the use of UEFI
 174 secure booting or fast boot.  I suspect fast boot was the problem,
 175 causing the firmware to boot directly from HD without considering any
 176 key presses and alternative devices, but do not know UEFI settings
 177 enough to tell.</p>

 179 <p>There is no way to install Linux on the machine in question without
 180 opening the box and disconnecting the hard drive!  This is as far as I
 181 can tell, the only way to get access to the firmware setup menu
 182 without accepting the Windows 8 license agreement.  I am told (and
 183 found description on how to) that it is possible to configure the
 184 firmware setup once booted into Windows 8.  But as I believe the terms
 185 of that agreement are completely unacceptable, accepting the license
 186 was never an alternative.  I do not enter agreements I do not intend
 187 to follow.</p>

 189 <p>I feared I had to return the laptops and ask for a refund, and
 190 waste many hours on this, but luckily there was a way to get it to
 191 work.  But I would not recommend it to anyone planning to run Linux on
 192 it, and I have become sceptical to Windows 8 certified laptops.  Is
 193 this the way Linux will be forced out of the market place, by making
 194 it close to impossible for "normal" users to install Linux without
 195 accepting the Microsoft Windows license terms?  Or at least not
 196 without risking to loose the warranty?</p>

 221 new laptops for my parents and a few others.  I bought Packard Bell
 222 Easynote LV to run Kubuntu on and use as their home computer.  But I
 223 am completely unable to figure out how to install Linux on it.  The
 224 computer is preinstalled with Windows 8, and I suspect it uses UEFI
 225 instead of a BIOS to boot.</p>

 227 <p>The problem is that I am unable to get it to PXE boot, and unable
 228 to get it to boot the Linux installer from my USB stick.  I have yet
 229 to try the DVD install, and still hope it will work.  when I turn on
 230 the computer, there is no information on what buttons to press to get
 231 the normal boot menu.  I expect to get some boot menu to select PXE or
 232 USB stick booting.  When booting, it first ask for the language to
 233 use, then for some regional settings, and finally if I will accept the
 234 Windows 8 terms of use.  As these terms are completely unacceptable to
 235 me, I have no other choice but to turn off the computer and try again
 236 to get it to boot the Linux installer.</p>

 238 <p>I have gathered my findings so far on a Linlap page about the
 239 <a href="http://www.linlap.com/packard_bell_easynote_lv">Packard Bell
 240 EasyNote LV</a> model.  If you have any idea how to get Linux
 241 installed on this machine, please get in touch or update that wiki
 242 page.  If I can't find a way to install Linux, I will have to return
 243 the laptop to the seller and find another machine for my parents.</p>

 246 using UEFI and "secure boot" by making it impossible to install Linux

 267 månedene har en ivrig student veiledet av Marius Kotsbak i
 268 <a href="http://www.friprogramvareiskolen.no/">FRiSK</a> testet hva en
 269 kan få til med en datamaskin til NOK 400,- (antagelig 1700,- med
 270 skjerm, tastatur og mus) når det brukes i Skolelinux.  Jeg spurte han
 271 om et intervju.</p>

 273 <p><strong>Hvem er du, og hva driver du med til daglig?</strong></p>

 275 <p>Jeg heter Nirosan Thiyagalingam. Jeg er 24 år og studerer
 276 dataingeniør studiet ved Høgskolen i Sør Trøndelag. Interessen for
 277 data har siden ung alder vært tilstede og jeg har i tillegg alltid
 278 vært glad i å lære nye ting. Med teknologi som endres svært hurtig er
 279 det alltid noe nytt å lære.  Noe som igjen har gjort det svært
 280 interessant å følge med på utviklingen.  Jeg valgte dataingeniør
 281 studiet grunnet ønske om å lære enda mer om programmering og utvikling
 282 av store systemer.</p>

 284 <p><strong>Hvordan kom du i kontakt med Skolelinux-prosjektet?</strong></p>

 286 <p>Skolelinux prosjektet hørte jeg først om i media. Men det var først
 287 når jeg skulle velge bacheloroppgave at jeg fattet mer interesse for
 288 prosjektet. Et enkelt søk på nettet førte meg til skolelinux sine
 289 hjemmesider.  Informasjonen jeg fant der gjorde meg enda nysgjerrig og
 290 jeg valgte derfor en oppgave som gikk ut på å få en
 291 <a href="http://www.raspberrypi.org">Raspberry PI</a>.  Altså en
 292 ultra-billig datamaskin til å kjøre Debian Edu på lik linje med
 293 vanlige datamaskiner. I løpet av prosjektet ble det gjort mye
 294 forskning på nettet. Det var mye jeg måtte forstå rundt hvordan
 295 operativsystemet Linux fungerte før jeg kunne angripe
 296 problemet. Prøvde først å finne ut hvordan man kunne transformere en
 297 vanlig installasjon av Skolelinux til Raspberry PI, men dette var
 298 altfor vanskelig å jeg endte opp med mer spørsmål enn svar. Det ble
 299 videre opprettet kontakt med Skolelinux utviklere på IRC der jeg fikk
 300 diskutert hvilken retning jeg burde gå for å få til en fullverdig
 301 løsning. Det ble bestemt at jeg skulle gå for å først installere
 302 <a href="http://www.raspbian.org/">Raspian</a>. Dette er et
 303 operativsystem basert på Debian spesiallaget for Raspberry Pi sin
 304 maskinvare. Nå som Debian var installert på datamaskinen gjenstod det
 305 å installere de nødvendige Skolelinux pakkene for å få til et
 306 fullverdig system. Disse pakkene ble installert manuelt i første
 307 omgang, men ble senere installert automatisk via et script som Petter
 308 Reinholdtsen laget. Dette scriptet er så enkel å bruke at man er i
 309 gang med installasjonen i løpet av bare 5 minutter. Ikke nok med det,
 310 alt skjer helt automatisk. Alt i alt er jeg veldig fornøyd med
 311 resultatet av installasjonsprosessen. Raspberry Pi er en veldig svak
 312 maskin og det merkes godt når man har installert Skolelinux på
 313 den. Video og 3D-rendering fungerer utrolig dårlig, men nettsurfing og
 314 kontorprogrammer fungerer godt.  Det kan derfor konkluderes med at
 315 datamaskinen er egnet for enkle oppgaver.

 317 <p>Jeg syns det er viktig påpeke at dette kun er startfasen av en slik
 318 løsning. På markedet finnes det nå maskiner som har bedre hardware enn
 319 Raspberry Pi. Det er store muligheter for at man kan klare å
 320 installere Skolelinux på disse også, og da forsvinner nok mest
 321 sannsynlig ytelsesproblemene med Video og 3D rendering også.</p>

 323 <p>Det ble også prøvd med en løsning som gjorde at Raspberry Pi
 324 fungerte som en tynnklient. Denne løsningen hadde langt bedre ytelse
 325 med tanke på hastighet og brukeropplevelse. Men også her var video og
 326 3D rendering dårlig. Det ble brukt en liten Linux distribusjon kalt
 327 <a href="http://www.berryterminal.com/">BerryTerminal</a> for å få til
 328 dette.</p>

 330 <p><strong>Hva er fordelene med Skolelinux slik du ser det?</strong></p>

 332 <p>Fordelen med Skolelinux er mange. At det er gratis er en stor
 333 fordel, men at det er så mange som er med på å utvikle det og
 334 vedlikeholde det er en enda større fordel. Allerede før jeg startet
 335 med prosjektet så jeg mange fordeler, og når jeg nærmet meg sluttfasen
 336 så jeg langt flere. At prosjektet skulle inneha en så høy kvalitet
 337 hadde jeg aldri trodd. En vanlig Skolelinux installasjon har de
 338 nødvendige programmene og funksjonen som både små og store skoler i
 339 tillegg til organisasjoner kan klare seg med.  At prosjektet tilbyr en
 340 så komplett løsning er en kjempefordel.  Installasjonen er knirkefri
 341 og det er svært enkelt å installere og komme i gang.</p>

 343 <p><strong>Hva er ulempene med Skolelinux slik du ser det?</strong></p>

 345 <p>Ulempene jeg ser med prosjektet er ryddigheten av websidene. Selv
 346 om websidene er enkle og konsise er det allikevel ikke appellerende i
 347 like stor grad som for eksempel
 348 <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com">Ubuntu</a> sine sider.  Deres side
 349 tilbyr, i tillegg til godt design og presentasjon, en nettbasert
 350 emulator av deres operativsystem. Dette er en stor fordel slik jeg ser
 351 det.  Bortsett fra dette ser jeg absolutt ingen ulemper med
 352 Skolelinux-prosjektet.</p>

 354 <p><strong>Hvilken fri programvare bruker du til daglig?</strong></p>

 356 <p>Til daglig er jeg en flittig bruker av det åpne media
 357 sentersystemet <a href="http://xbmc.org/">XBMC</a>. Det enorme
 358 samfunnet rundt dette prosjektet har gjort dette til et program som
 359 dekker alles behov. Man kan tilpasse det akkurat slik man vil både med
 360 tanke på utseende og funksjoner ved installere plug-ins eller
 361 scripts.</p>

 363 <p><strong>Hvilken strategi tror du er den rette å bruke for å få
 364 skoler til å ta i bruk fri programvare?</strong></p>

 366 <p>Strategien som burde brukes sett fra mine øyne er
 367 markedsføring. Jeg er sikker på at om flere skoler fikk et lite innsyn
 368 i hvor bra Skolelinux er så ville de ikke nølt med å gå over fra noe
 369 annet som koster de store summer. At skolelinux til de grader tilbyr
 370 en så komplett løsning bure komme frem. Enten via reklamekampanjer
 371 eller ved å sende ut folk til skoler for så å la skolenettverk
 372 ansvarlige få teste ut hvordan Skolelinux fungerer i praksis. Om det
 373 i tillegg ble utviklet gode websider og en emulator for å la brukere
 374 prøve operativsystemet ville nok dette ha styrket inntrykket
 375 betraktelig.</p>

 391 an operating system based on Debian intended for use in schools.  It
 392 contain a turn-key solution for the computer network provided to
 393 pupils in the primary schools.  It provide both the central server,
 394 network boot servers and desktop environments with heaps of
 395 educational software.  The project was founded almost 12 years ago,
 396 2001-07-02.  If you want to support the project, which is in need for

 401 <p>A topic that come up again and again on the Debian Edu mailing
 402 lists and elsewhere, is the question on how to transform a Debian or
 403 Ubuntu installation into a Debian Edu installation.  It isn't very
 404 hard, and last week I wrote a script to replicate the steps done by
 405 the Debian Edu installer.</p>

 407 <p>The script,
 408 <a href="http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/debian-edu/branches/wheezy/debian-edu-config/share/debian-edu-config/tools/debian-edu-bless?view=markup">debian-edu-bless<a/>

 410 transform an existing Debian Wheezy or Ubuntu (untested) installation
 411 into a Debian Edu Workstation:</p>

 416 <li>Create /etc/debian-edu/config with the wanted configuration.</li>
 417 <li>Install debian-edu-install to load preseeding values and pull in

 420     /etc/debian-edu/config, and run tasksel to install packages
 421     according to the profile specified in the config above,
 422     overriding some of the Debian automation machinery.</li>

 425 <li>Ask for a reboot to enable all the configuration changes.</li>

 430 replicated like this.  Disk partitioning and LVM setup, for example.
 431 So this script just assume there is enough disk space to install all
 432 the needed packages.</p>

 435 setting up <a href="http://www.raspberrypi.org">Raspberry Pi</a> as a
 436 Debian Edu client, and using it he can take the existing
 437 <a href="http://www.raspbian.org/FrontPage‎">Raspbian</a> installation and
 438 transform it into a fully functioning Debian Edu Workstation (or
 439 Roaming Workstation, or whatever :).</p>

 659 for Debian Wheezy</a> was waiting in my mail box.  This is a great
 660 Debian release, and I expect to move my machines at home over to it fairly
 661 soon.</p>

 663 <p>The new debian release contain heaps of new stuff, and one program
 664 in particular make me very happy to see included.  The
 665 <a href="http://scratch.mit.edu/">Scratch</a> program, made famous by
 666 the <a href="http://www.code.org/">Teach kids code</a> movement, is
 667 included for the first time.  Alongside similar programs like
 668 <a href="http://edu.kde.org/kturtle/">kturtle</a> and
 669 <a href="http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Activities/Turtle_Art">turtleart</a>,
 670 it allow for visual programming where syntax errors can not happen,
 671 and a friendly programming environment for learning to control the
 672 computer.  Scratch will also be included in the next release of Debian
 673 Edu.</a>

 675 <p>And now that Wheezy is wrapped up, we can wrap up the next Debian
 676 Edu/Skolelinux release too.  The
 677 <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/2013/04/msg00132.html">first
 678 alpha release</a> went out last week, and the next should soon

 710 <p>Gjøre det enklere å finne en tannlege som er praktisk for deg, der
 711 pris og reisetid med kollektivt, til fots eller med bil er tatt med i
 712 beregningen, ved å oppgi hvor en bor og jobber, og få forslag til
 713 tannleger både i nærheten og på veien mellom disse stedene.</p>

 715 <p>Brukeren oppgir hjemmeadresse og jobbadresse, og kanskje også
 716 barnehage. Så kan en også oppgi egen timelønn (for å beregne taps
 717 arbeidsfortjeneste) og om en reiser med kollektivt, til fots eller
 718 kjører bil. Så trykker en søk, og får opp en todelt side med kart og
 719 tekstliste. I kartdelen vises aktuelle tannleger (for eksempel maks
 720 7), og i tekstdelen er de samme tannlegene listet opp, med pris og
 721 reisetid for kollektivtransport, og pris pluss reisekostnad hvis en
 722 reiser med bil. En kan endre sorteringsrekkefølge for listen ved å
 723 trykke på aktuell kolonne, og velge om en skal sortere på pris,
 724 reisetid eller totalkostnad. Kun tannleger som tar imot nye kunder tas
 725 i utganspunktet med i listen. Når brukeren trykker med musa en
 726 tannlegemarkør på kartet kommer det en popup med detaljer om
 727 tannlegen, den samme informasjonen som finnes i listen under kartet,
 728 og lenke til mer informasjon om tannlegen.</p>

 731 informasjonsside med adresse, hjemmesideurl, telefonnummer, lenke til
