34 <p><strong>About Debian Edu and Skolelinux
</strong></p>
36 <p><a href=
"http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu, also known as
37 Skolelinux
</a>, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an
38 out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school
39 network. Immediately after installation a school server running all
40 services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users
41 and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable Web-UI. A netbooting
42 environment is prepared using PXE, so after initial installation of
43 the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all other machines can be
44 installed via the network. The provided school server provides LDAP
45 database and Kerberos authentication service, centralized home
46 directories, DHCP server, web proxy and many other services. The

192 interview last November. But the developers and translators are still
193 pulling along to get the Wheezy based release out the door, and this
194 time I managed to get an interview from one of the French translators
195 in the project, Cédric Boutillier.
</p>
197 <p><strong>Who are you, and how do you spend your days?
</strong></p>
199 <p>I am
34 year old. I live near Paris, France. I am an assistant
200 professor in probability theory. I spend my daytime teaching
201 mathematics at the university and doing fundamental research in
202 probability in connexion with combinatorics and statistical physics.
</p>
204 <p>I have been involved in the Debian project for a couple of years
205 and became Debian Developer a few months ago. I am working on Ruby
206 packaging, publicity and translation.
</p>
208 <p><strong>How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux / Debian Edu
209 project?
</strong></p>
211 <p>I came to the Debian Edu project after a call for translation of
212 <a href=
"http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Manuals">the
213 Debian Edu manual
</a> for the release of Debian Edu Squeeze. Since
214 then, I have been working on updating the French translation of the
217 <p>I had the opportunity to make an installation of Debian Edu in a
218 virtual machine when I was preparing localised version of some screen
219 shots for the manual. I was amazed to see it worked out of the box and
220 how comprehensive the list of software installed by default was.
</p>
222 <p>What amazed me was the complete network infrastructure directly
223 ready to use, which can and the nice administration interface provided
224 by
<a href=
"https://oss.gonicus.de/labs/gosa/">GOsa²
</a>. What pleased
225 me also was the fact that among the software installed by default,
226 there were many "traditional" educative software to learn languages,
227 to count, to program... but also software to develop creativity and
228 artistic skills with music (
<a href=
"http://ardour.org/">Ardour
</a>,
229 <a href=
"http://audacity.sourceforge.net/">Audacity
</a>) and
230 movies/animation (I was especially thinking of
231 <a href=
"http://linuxstopmotion.sourceforge.net/">Stopmotion
</a>).
</p>
233 <p>I am following the development of Debian Edu and am hanging out on
234 <a href=
"irc://irc.debian.org/%23debian-edu">#debian-edu
</a>.
235 Unfortunately, I don't much time to get more involved in this
236 beautiful project.
</p>
238 <p><strong>What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux / Debian
241 <p>For me, the main advantages of Skolelinux/Debian Edu are its
242 community of experts and its precise documentation, as well as the
243 fact that it provides a solution ready to use.
</p>
245 <p>I would add also the fact that it is based on the rock solid Debian
246 distribution, which ensures stability and provides a huge collection
247 of educational free software.
</p>
249 <p><strong>What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux / Debian
252 <p>Maybe the lack of manpower to do lobbying on the
253 project. Sometimes, people who need to take decisions concerning IT do
254 not have all the elements to evaluate properly free software
255 solutions. The fact that support by a company may be difficult to find
256 is probably a problem if the school does not have IT personnel.
</p>
258 <p>One can find support from a company by looking at
259 <a href=
"http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Help/ProfessionalHelp">the
260 wiki dokumentation
</a>, where some countries already have a number of
261 companies providing support for Debian Edu, like Germany or
262 Norway. This list is easy to find readily from the manual. However,
263 for other countries, like France, the list is empty. I guess that
264 consultants proposing support for Debian would be able to provide some
265 support for Debian Edu as well.
</p>
267 <p><strong>Which free software do you use daily?
</strong></p>
269 <p>I am using the KDE Plasma Desktop. But the pieces of software I use
270 most runs in a terminal: Mutt and OfflineIMAP for emails, latex for
271 scientific documents, mpd for music. VIM is my editor of choice. I am
272 also using the mathematical software
273 <a href=
"http://www.scilab.org/en/scilab/about">Scilab
</a> and
274 <a href=
"http://www.sagemath.org/index.html">Sage
</a> (built from
275 source as not completely packaged for Debian, yet).
277 <p><strong>Do you have any suggestions for teachers interested in
278 using the free software in Debian to teach mathematics and
279 statistics?
</strong></p>
281 <p>I do not have any "nice" recommendations for statistics. At our
282 university, we use both
<a href=
"http://www.r-project.org/">R
</a> and
283 Scilab to teach statistics and probabilistic simulations. For
284 geometry, there are nice programs:
</p>
288 <li><a href=
"http://www.drgeo.eu/">drgeo
</a> and
289 <a href=
"http://edu.kde.org/applications/all/kig">kig
</a> to do
290 constructions in planar geometry
292 <li><a href=
"http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/software/download/kali.html">kali
</a>
293 to discover symmetry groups (the so-called wallpapers and frieze
294 groups), although the interface looks a bit old.
</li>
299 <a href=
"http://edu.kde.org/applications/all/cantor">cantor
</a>, which
300 provides a uniform interface to SciLab, Sage,
301 <a href=
"http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Octave">Octave
</a>, etc...
</p>
303 <p><strong>Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
304 get schools to use free software?
</strong></p>
306 <p>My suggestions would be to
</p>
310 <li>advertise the reduction of costs when free software is used.
</li>
312 <li>communicate about the quality of free software projects, using
313 well known examples like Firefox, ThunderBird and
314 OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice.
</li>
316 <li>advertise the living and strong community around the project.
</li>
318 <li>show that it is not more difficult to use than any other

551 I could install Linux on a Packard Bell EasyNote LV computer
552 preinstalled with Windows
8</a>. I found a solution, but am horrified
553 with the obstacles put in the way of Linux users on a laptop with UEFI
556 <p>I never found out if the cause of my problems were the use of UEFI
557 secure booting or fast boot. I suspect fast boot was the problem,
558 causing the firmware to boot directly from HD without considering any
559 key presses and alternative devices, but do not know UEFI settings
562 <p>There is no way to install Linux on the machine in question without
563 opening the box and disconnecting the hard drive! This is as far as I
564 can tell, the only way to get access to the firmware setup menu
565 without accepting the Windows
8 license agreement. I am told (and
566 found description on how to) that it is possible to configure the
567 firmware setup once booted into Windows
8. But as I believe the terms
568 of that agreement are completely unacceptable, accepting the license
569 was never an alternative. I do not enter agreements I do not intend
572 <p>I feared I had to return the laptops and ask for a refund, and
573 waste many hours on this, but luckily there was a way to get it to
574 work. But I would not recommend it to anyone planning to run Linux on
575 it, and I have become sceptical to Windows
8 certified laptops. Is
576 this the way Linux will be forced out of the market place, by making
577 it close to impossible for "normal" users to install Linux without
578 accepting the Microsoft Windows license terms? Or at least not
579 without risking to loose the warranty?

604 new laptops for my parents and a few others. I bought Packard Bell
605 Easynote LV to run Kubuntu on and use as their home computer. But I
606 am completely unable to figure out how to install Linux on it. The
607 computer is preinstalled with Windows
8, and I suspect it uses UEFI
608 instead of a BIOS to boot.
</p>
610 <p>The problem is that I am unable to get it to PXE boot, and unable
611 to get it to boot the Linux installer from my USB stick. I have yet
612 to try the DVD install, and still hope it will work. when I turn on
613 the computer, there is no information on what buttons to press to get
614 the normal boot menu. I expect to get some boot menu to select PXE or
615 USB stick booting. When booting, it first ask for the language to
616 use, then for some regional settings, and finally if I will accept the
617 Windows
8 terms of use. As these terms are completely unacceptable to
618 me, I have no other choice but to turn off the computer and try again
619 to get it to boot the Linux installer.

621 <p>I have gathered my findings so far on a Linlap page about the
622 <a href=
"http://www.linlap.com/packard_bell_easynote_lv">Packard Bell

624 installed on this machine, please get in touch or update that wiki
625 page. If I can't find a way to install Linux, I will have to return
626 the laptop to the seller and find another machine for my parents.
</p>
628 <p>I wonder, is this the way Linux will be forced out of the market
629 using UEFI and "secure boot" by making it impossible to install Linux

</a> resultat av et studentprosjekt i Skolelinux.
651 <a href=

</strong></p>
658 <p>Jeg heter Nirosan Thiyagalingam. Jeg er
24 år og studerer
659 dataingeniør studiet ved Høgskolen i Sør Trøndelag. Interessen for
661 vært glad i å lære nye ting.
</p>
667 <p><strong>Hvordan kom du i kontakt med Skolelinux-prosjektet?
</strong></p>
674 <a href=
"http://www.raspberrypi.org">Raspberry PI
685 <a href=
"http://www.raspbian.org/">Raspian
</a>. Dette er et
686 operativsystem basert på Debian spesiallaget for Raspberry Pi sin
687 maskinvare.
5 minutter. Ikke nok med det,
693 alt skjer helt automatisk.
697 kontorprogrammer fungerer godt.
</p>
710 <a href=
"http://www.berryterminal.com/">BerryTerminal
</a> for å få til
</p>
730 like stor grad som for eksempel
731 <a href=
"http://www.ubuntu.com">Ubuntu
</a> sine sider. Deres side
735 Skolelinux-prosjektet.
</p>
737 <p><strong>Hvilken fri programvare bruker du til daglig?
</strong></p>
740 sentersystemet
<a href=
"http://xbmc.org/">XBMC
</strong></p>
755 ansvarlige få teste ut hvordan Skolelinux fungerer i praksis.

784 <p>A topic that come up again and again on the Debian Edu mailing
785 lists and elsewhere, is the question on how to transform a Debian or
786 Ubuntu installation into a Debian Edu installation. It isn't very
787 hard, and last week I wrote a script to replicate the steps done by
788 the Debian Edu installer.
</p>
791 <a href=

<a/>
792 in the debian-edu-config package, will go through these six steps and
793 transform an existing Debian Wheezy or Ubuntu (untested) installation
794 into a Debian Edu Workstation:
</p>
798 <li>Add skolelinux related APT sources.
</li>
799 <li>Create /etc/debian-edu/config with the wanted configuration.
</li>
800 <li>Install debian-edu-install to load preseeding values and pull in
801 our configuration.
</li>
802 <li>Preseed debconf database with profile setup in
803 /etc/debian-edu/config, and run tasksel to install packages
804 according to the profile specified in the config above,
805 overriding some of the Debian automation machinery.
</li>
806 <li>Run debian-edu-cfengine-D installation to configure everything
807 that could not be done using preseeding.
</li>
808 <li>Ask for a reboot to enable all the configuration changes.
</li>
812 <p>There are some steps in the Debian Edu installation that can not be
813 replicated like this. Disk partitioning and LVM setup, for example.
814 So this script just assume there is enough disk space to install all
815 the needed packages.
</p>
817 <p>The script was created to help a Debian Edu student working on
818 setting up
<a href=
"http://www.raspberrypi.org">Raspberry Pi
</a> as a
819 Debian Edu client, and using it he can take the existing

821 transform it into a fully functioning Debian Edu Workstation (or

</p>
824 <p>The default setting in the script is to create a KDE Workstation.
825 If a LXDE based Roaming workstation is wanted instead, modify the
826 PROFILE and DESKTOP values at the top to look like this instead:
</p>
829 PROFILE="Roaming-Workstation"
833 <p>The script could even become useful to set up Debian Edu servers in
834 the cloud, by starting with a virtual Debian installation at some
835 virtual hosting service and setting up all the services on first

862 <p><strong>About Debian Edu and Skolelinux
</strong></p>
864 <p>Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based
865 on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely
866 configured school network. Immediatly after installation a school
867 server running all services needed for a school network is set up just
868 waiting for users and machines being added via GOsa², a comfortable
869 Web-UI. A netbooting environment is prepared using PXE, so after
870 initial installation of the main server from CD, DVD or USB stick all
871 other machines can be installed via the network.
</p>
873 <p>This is the first test release based on Wheezy (which currently is
874 not released yet). Basically this is an updated and slightly improved
875 version compared to the Squeeze release.
</p>
877 <p><strong>Software updates
</strong></p>
879 <li>Install freemind (
0.9.0) by default, and stop installing vym by
881 <li>Install chromium (
26.0.1410.43) by default.
</li>
882 <li>Install goplay (
0.5-
1.1) to make golearn available by default.
</li>
883 <li>Updated support for Japanese input methods, now based on
887 <p><strong>Other changes
</strong></p>
890 <li>Switched default file system from ext3 to ext4 for speed and
891 reliability improvements.
</li>
892 <li>Got rid of unwanted winbind daemon and PAM setup activated because
893 of
<a href=
"http://bugs.debian.org/706434">706434</a>.
</li>
894 <li>Extended and improved the testsuite tests to detect more possible
896 <li>Corrected proxy handling to not set http_proxy to a bogus
898 <li>Corrected proxy setup for diskless workstations.
</li>
899 <li>Corrected PXE setup to use our updated udebs during installation.
</li>
900 <li>Made installation handling of low entropy level more robust.
</li>
901 <li>Create larger partitions for Roaming workstations and Thin client
902 servers, to make room for all the software installed.
</li>
903 <li>Fix bug in Roaming workstation PAM setup, making it impossible to
904 log in (
