  31         <p>It is pleasing to see that the work we put down in publishing new
  32 editions of the classic <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free
  33 Culture book</a> by the founder of the Creative Commons movement,
  34 Lawrence Lessig, is still being appreciated.  I had a look at the
  35 latest sales numbers for the paper edition today.  Not too impressive,
  36 but happy to see some buyers still exist.  All the revenue from the
  37 books is sent to the <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative
  38 Commons Corporation</a>, and they receive the largest cut if you buy
  39 directly from Lulu.  Most books are sold via Amazon, with Ingram
  40 second and only a small fraction directly from Lulu.  The ebook
  41 edition is available for free from

 104         <p>As my regular readers probably remember, the last year I published
 105 a French and Norwegian translation of the classic
 106 <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free Culture book</a> by the
 107 founder of the Creative Commons movement, Lawrence Lessig.  A bit less
 108 known is the fact that due to the way I created the translations,
 109 using docbook and po4a, I also recreated the English original.  And
 110 because I already had created a new the PDF edition, I published it
 111 too.  The revenue from the books are sent to the Creative Commons
 112 Corporation.  In other words, I do not earn any money from this
 113 project, I just earn the warm fuzzy feeling that the text is available
 114 for a wider audience and more people can learn why the Creative
 115 Commons is needed.</p>

 117 <p>Today, just for fun, I had a look at the sales number over at
 118 Lulu.com, which take care of payment, printing and shipping.  Much to
 119 my surprise, the English edition is selling better than both the
 120 French and Norwegian edition, despite the fact that it has been
 121 available in English since it was first published.  In total, 24 paper
 122 books was sold for USD $19.99 between 2016-01-01 and 2016-07-31:</p>

 132 stores like Amazon and Barnes&Noble.  Most revenue, around $10 per
 133 book, is sent to the Creative Commons project when the book is sold
 134 directly by Lulu.com.  The other channels give less revenue.  The
 135 summary from Lulu tell me 10 books was sold via the Amazon channel, 10
 136 via Ingram (what is this?) and 4 directly by Lulu.  And Lulu.com tells
 137 me that the revenue sent so far this year is USD $101.42.  No idea
 138 what kind of sales numbers to expect, so I do not know if that is a
 139 good amount of sales for a 10 year old book or not.  But it make me
 140 happy that the buyers find the book, and I hope they enjoy reading it
 141 as much as I did.</p>

 215 Culture</a> book by Lawrence Lessig is now available for sale on
 216 Lulu.com.  Once I have formally verified my proof reading copy, which
 217 should be in the mail, the paperback edition should be available in
 218 book stores like Amazon and Barnes & Noble too.</p>

 220 <p>This French edition, Culture Libre, is the work of the
 221 <a href="http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/">dblatex</a> developer Benoît
 222 Guillon, who created the PO file from the initial translation
 223 available from
 224 <a href="http://www.wikilivres.ca/wiki/Culture_libre">the Wikilivres
 225 wiki pages</a> and completed and corrected the translation to match
 226 the original docbook edition my project is using, as well as
 227 coordinated the proof reading of the final result.  I believe the end
 228 result look great, but I am biased and do not read French.  In
 229 addition to the paperback edition, the book is available in PDF, EPUB
 230 and Mobi format from the github project page linked to above.</p>

 232 <p>When enabling book store distribution on Lulu.com, I had to nearly
 233 triple the price to allow the book stores some profit.  I also had to
 234 accept that I will get some revenue when a book is sold via Lulu.com.
 235 But because of the non-commercial clause in the book license
 236 (CC-BY-NC), this might be a problem.  To bypass the problem I
 237 discussed how to handle the revenue with the author, and we agreed
 238 that the revenue for these editions go to the
 239 <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons non-profit
 240 Corporation</a> who handle donations to the Creative Commons project.
 241 So far they have earned around USD 70 on sales of the
 242 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/free-culture/paperback/product-22440520.html">English</a>
 243 and
 244 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/fri-kultur/paperback/product-22441576.html">Norwegian
 245 Bokmål</a> editions, according to Lulu.com.  They will get the revenue
 246 for the French edition too.  Their revenue is higher if you buy the
 247 book directly from Lulu.com instead of via a book store, so I
 248 recommend you buy directly from Lulu.com.</p>

 350 movement</a> gained momentum, its creator Lawrence Lessig wrote the
 351 book <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Culture_(book)">Free
 352 Culture</a> to explain the problems with increasing copyright
 353 regulation and suggest some solutions.  I read the book back then and
 354 was very moved by it.  Reading the book inspired me and changed the
 355 way I looked on copyright law, and I would love it if more people
 356 would read it too.</p>

 358 <p>Because of this, I decided in the summer of 2012 to translate it to
 359 Norwegian Bokmål and publish it for those of my friends and family
 360 that prefer to read books in Norwegian.  I translated the book using
 361 docbook and a gettext PO file, and a byproduct of this process is a
 362 new edition of the English original.  I've been in touch with the
 363 author during by work, and he said it was fine with him if I also
 364 published an English version.  So I decided to do so.  Today, I made
 365 this edition

 423 developer of the dblatex docbook processor, Benoît Guillon, decided a
 424 to try to create a French version of the book.  He started with the
 425 French translation available from the
 426 <a href="http://www.wikilivres.ca/wiki/Culture_libre">Wikilivres wiki
 427 pages</a>, and wrote a program to convert it into a PO file, allowing
 428 the translation to be integrated into the po4a based framework I use
 429 to create the Norwegian translation from the English edition.  We meet
 430 on the <a href="irc://irc.freenode.net/%23dblatex">#dblatex IRC
 431 channel</a> to discuss the work.  If you want to help create a French
 432 edition, check out

 458 I wanted to create a cover looking similar to the original cover of

 461 Culture</a> book we are translating to Norwegian, and I wanted it in
 462 vector format for high resolution printing.  But my inkscape knowledge
 463 were not nearly good enough to pull that off.

 465 <p>But thanks to the great inkscape community, I was able to wrap up
 466 the cover yesterday evening.  I asked on the
 467 <a href="irc://irc.freenode.net/%23inkscape">#inkscape IRC channel</a>
 468 on Freenode for help and clues, and Marc Jeanmougin (Mc-) volunteered
 469 to try to recreate it based on the PDF of the cover from the HTML
 470 version.  Not only did he create a
 471 <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/copy1.svg ">SVG document with
 472 the original and his vector version side by side</a>, he even provided
 473 an <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/out-1.ogv">instruction
 474 video</a> explaining how he did it</a>.  But the instruction video is
 475 not easy to follow for an untrained inkscape user. The video is a
 476 recording on how he did it, and he is obviously very experienced as
 477 the menu selections are very quick and he mentioned on IRC that he did
 478 use some keyboard shortcuts that can't be seen on the video, but it
 479 give a good idea about the inkscape operations to use to create the
 480 stripes with the embossed copyright sign in the center.</p>

 482 <p>I took his SVG file, copied the vector image and re-sized it to fit
 483 on the cover I was drawing.  I am happy with the end result, and the
 484 current english version look like this:</p>

 494 <p>The book is very close to being ready for publication, and I expect
 495 to upload the final draft to Lulu in the next few days and order a
 496 final proof reading copy to verify that everything look like it should
 497 before allowing everyone to order their own copy of Free Culture, in
 498 English or Norwegian Bokmål.  I'm waiting to give the the productive
 499 proof readers a chance to complete their work.</p>

 520         <p>Today, finally, my first printed draft edition of the Norwegian
 521 translation of Free Culture I have been working on for the last few
 522 years arrived in the mail.  I had to fake a cover to get the interior
 523 printed, and the exterior of the book look awful, but that is
 524 irrelevant at this point.  I asked for a printed pocket book version
 525 to get an idea about the font sizes and paper format as well as how
 526 good the figures and images look in print, but also to test what the
 527 pocket book version would look like.  After receiving the 500 page
 528 pocket book, it became obvious to me that that pocket book size is too
 529 small for this book.  I believe the book is too thick, and several
 530 tables and figures do not look good in the size they get with that
 531 small page sizes.  I believe I will go with the 5.5x8.5 inch size
 532 instead.  A surprise discovery from the paper version was how bad the
 533 URLs look in print.  They are very hard to read in the colophon page.
 534 The URLs are red in the PDF, but light gray on paper.  I need to
 535 change the color of links somehow to look better.  But there is a
 536 printed book in my hand, and it feels great. :)</p>

 538 <p>Now I only need to fix the cover, wrap up the postscript with the
 539 store behind the book, and collect the last corrections from the proof
 540 readers before the book is ready for proper printing.  Cover artists
 541 willing to work for free and create a Creative Commons licensed vector
 542 file looking similar to the original is most welcome, as my skills as
 543 a graphics designer are mostly missing.</p>

 564         <p>Typesetting a book is harder than I hoped.  As the translation is
 565 mostly done, and a volunteer proof reader was going to check the text
 566 on paper, it was time this summer to focus on formatting my translated
 567 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> based version of the
 568 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> book by Lawrence
 569 Lessig.  I've been trying to get both docboox-xsl+fop and dblatex to
 570 give me a good looking PDF, but in the end I went with dblatex, because
 571 its Debian maintainer and upstream developer were responsive and very
 572 helpful in solving my formatting challenges.</p>

 574 <p>Last night, I finally managed to create a PDF that no longer made
 575 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/">Lulu.com</a> complain after uploading,
 576 and I ordered a text version of the book on paper.  It is lacking a
 577 proper book cover and is not tagged with the correct ISBN number, but
 578 should give me an idea what the finished book will look like.</p>

 580 <p>Instead of using Lulu, I did consider printing the book using
 581 <a href="http://www.createspace.com/">CreateSpace</a>, but ended up
 582 using Lulu because it had smaller book size options (CreateSpace seem
 583 to lack pocket book with extended distribution).  I looked for a
 584 similar service in Norway, but have not seen anything so far.  Please
 585 let me know if I am missing out on something here.</p>

 587 <p>But I still struggle to decide the book size.  Should I go for
 588 pocket book (4.25x6.875 inches / 10.8x17.5 cm) with 556 pages, Digest
 589 (5.5x8.5 inches / 14x21.6 cm) with 323 pages or US Trade (6x8 inches /
 590 15.3x22.9 cm) with 280 pages?  Fewer pager give a cheaper book, and a
 591 smaller book is easier to carry around.  The test book I ordered was
 592 pocket book sized, to give me an idea how well that fit in my hand,
 593 but I suspect I will end up using a digest sized book in the end to
 594 bring the prize down further.</p>

 596 <p>My biggest challenge at the moment is making nice cover art.  My
 597 inkscape skills are not yet up to the task of replicating the original
 598 cover in SVG format.  I also need to figure out what to write about
 599 the book on the back (will most likely use the same text as the
 600 description on web based book stores).  I would love help with this,
 601 if you are willing to license the art source and final version using
 602 the same CC license as the book.  My artistic skills are not really up
 603 to the task.</p>

 605 <p>I plan to publish the book in both English and Norwegian and on
 606 paper, in PDF form as well as EPUB and MOBI format.  The current
 607 status can as usual be found on

 610 PDF version look good.  Someone should probably do the same with the

 642 One of the features I want to get the structure similar to the
 643 original book is to typeset the footnotes as endnotes in the notes
 644 chapter.  Based on the
 645 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/685063">feedback from the Debian
 646 maintainer and the dblatex developer</a>, I came up with this recipe I
 647 would like to share with you.  The proposal was to create a new LaTeX
 648 class file and add the LaTeX code there, but this is not always
 649 practical, when I want to be able to replace the class using a make
 650 file variable.  So my proposal misuses the latex.begindocument XSL
 651 parameter value, to get a small fragment into the correct location in
 652 the generated LaTeX File.</p>

 754 reading. :) More spell checking is needed, and several illustrations
 755 need to be cleaned up.  The work stopped up because I had to give

 792         <p>The <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu / Skolelinux
 793 project</a> provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
 794 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
 795 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation.  This text is about how the
 796 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.</p>
 797
 798 <p>One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
 799 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
 800 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
 801 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
 802 in sync.  And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
 803 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
 804 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
 805 edit the documentation using a web browser.  We also want it to be
 806 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
 807 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
 808 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
 809 goals.</p>
 810
 811 <p>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
 812 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/">Debian
 813 wiki</a>, as several wiki pages written in English.  It consist of one
 814 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
 815 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
 816 chapters together into one large web page (aka
 817 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne">the
 818 AllInOne page</a>).  The AllInOne page is the one used for further
 819 processing and translations.  Thanks to the fact that the
 820 <a href="http://moinmo.in/">MoinMoin</a> installation on
 821 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
 822 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">the Docbook format</a>, we can fetch
 823 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
 824 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
 825 manual.  This process also download images and transform image
 826 references to use the locally downloaded images.  The generated
 827 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
 828 using the <tt>documentation/scripts/get_manual</tt> program, and the
 829 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
 830 a handfull of images.  The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
 831 and epub versions of the English manual.  This is the basic step of
 832 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
 833 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
 834 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.</p>
 835
 836 <p>But English documentation is not enough for us.  We want translated
 837 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
 838 track the English original.  For this we use the
 839 <a href="http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html">poxml</a> package,
 840 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
 841 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
 842 translation tools used by those translating free software.  The pot
 843 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
 844 files), which the translations update with the native language
 845 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
 846 original.  The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
 847 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
 848 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
 849 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml).  This translated (or partly
 850 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
 851 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
 852 of the documentation.</p>

 854 <p>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files.  We
 855 recommend using
 856 <a href="http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/">lokalize</a>,
 857 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
 858 <a href="http://pootle.translatehouse.org/">Poodle</a> or
 859 <a href="https://www.transifex.com/">Transifex</a>.  All we care about
 860 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository.  Updated
 861 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
 862 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc">bug reports
 863 against the debian-edu-doc package</a>.</p>

 865 <p>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
 866 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
 867 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
 868 this regard).  For this we transform the original PNG images to the
 869 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
 870 translated images by storing translated versions in
 871 images/$LANGUAGECODE/.  I am a bit unsure about the details here.  The
 872 package maintainers know more.</p>

 910         <p>It has been a while since my last update.  Since last summer, I
 911 have worked on a Norwegian
 912 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> version of the 2004 book
 913 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> by Lawrence Lessig,
 914 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
 915 law.  Yesterday, I finally broken the 90% mark, when counting the
 916 number of strings to translate.  Due to real life constraints, I have
 917 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
 918 I found time to work on it again.  Still lots of work left, but the
 919 first draft is nearing completion.  I created a graph to show the
 920 progress of the translation:</p>

 924 <p>When the first draft is done, the translated text need to be
 925 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG
 926 drawings need to be fixed.  There are probably also some index entries
 927 missing that need to be added.  This can be done by comparing the
 928 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
 929 English docbook version with the paper version.  Last, the colophon
 930 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
 931 done.  I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
 932 of the index pages.  All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
 933 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
 934 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.</p>

 936 <p>There is still need for translators and people with docbook
 937 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
 938 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
 939 translation and proof reading.  And I would like the figures to be
 940 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them.  Any SVG master
 941 around?  There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.

1009 frivillige i EFN har skannet inn, OCR-tolket og korrekturlest
1010 novellen, og deretter kodet den i en rekke digitale formater.</p>

1012 <p>Forfatteren har gitt tillatelse til publisering av Kodémus under ny
1013 lisens, og novellen utgis av EFN med en Creative Commons (CC)
1014 fribrukslisens (nærmere bestemt lisensen CC-BY-NC-ND). For leserne
1015 eller brukerne innebærer dette at de får en klar og standardisert
1016 beskjed om hvilke rettigheter de har til å dele novellen videre med
1017 andre. For forfatteren innebærer dette økt synlighet og
1018 tilgjengelighet for verket, slik at det ikke blir glemt, da
1019 søkemotorer og nettlesere inneholder egne søkevalg for CC-lisenser, og
1020 mange brukere søker etter verk som de vet de kan dele og bruke på

1087         <p>A few days ago, during a discussion in
1088 <a href="http://www.efn.no/">EFN</a> about interesting books to read
1089 about copyright and the data retention directive, a suggestion to read
1090 the 1968 short story Kodémus by
1091 <a href="http://web2.gyldendal.no/toraage/">Tore Åge Bringsværd</a>
1092 came up.  The text was only available in old paper books, and thus not
1093 easily available for current and future generations.  Some of the
1094 people participating in the discussion contacted the author, and
1095 reported back 2013-03-19 that the author was OK with releasing the
1096 short story using a <a href="http://www.creativecommons.org/">Creative
1097 Commons</a> license.  The text was quickly scanned and OCR-ed, and we
1098 were ready to start on the editing and typesetting.</p>

1100 <p>As I already had some experience formatting text in my project to
1101 provide a Norwegian version of the Free Culture book by Lawrence
1102 Lessig, I chipped in and set up a
1103 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">DocBook</a> processing framework to
1104 generate PDF, HTML and EPUB version of the short story.  The tools to
1105 transform DocBook to different formats are already in my Linux
1106 distribution of choice, <a href="http://www.debian.org/">Debian</a>, so
1107 all I had to do was to use the
1108 <a href="http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/">dblatex</a>,
1109 <a href="http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/epub/README">dbtoepub</a>
1110 and <a href="https://fedorahosted.org/xmlto/">xmlto</a> tools to do the
1111 conversion.  After a few days, we decided to replace dblatex with
1112 xsltproc/fop (aka
1113 <a href="http://wiki.docbook.org/DocBookXslStylesheets">docbook-xsl</a>),
1114 to get the copyright information to show up in the PDF and to get a
1115 nicer &lt;variablelist&gt; typesetting, but that is just a minor
1116 technical detail.</p>

1118 <p>There were a few challenges, of course.  We want to typeset the
1119 short story to look like the original, and that require fairly good
1120 control over the layout.  The original short story have three
1121 parts/scenes separated by a single horizontally centred star (*), and
1122 the paragraphs do not contain only flowing text, but dialogs and text
1123 that started on a new line in the middle of the paragraph.</p>

1125 <p>I initially solved the first challenge by using a paragraph with a
1126 single star in it, ie &lt;para&gt;*&lt;/para&gt;, but it made sure a
1127 placeholder indicated where the scene shifted.  This did not look too
1128 good without the centring.  The next approach was to create a new
1129 preprocessor directive &lt;?newscene?&gt;, mapping to "&lt;hr/&gt;"
1130 for HTML and "&lt;fo:block text-align="center"&gt;&lt;fo:leader
1131 leader-pattern="rule" rule-thickness="0.5pt"/&gt;&lt;/fo:block&gt;"
1132 for FO/PDF output (did not try to implement this in dblatex, as we had

1223         <p>Since this summer, I have worked in my spare time on a Norwegian <a

1225 href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> by Lawrence Lessig.
1226 The reason is that this book is a great primer on what problems exist
1227 in the current copyright laws, and I want it to be available also for
1228 those that are reluctant do read an English book.

1236 my current progress of 10-20 strings per day, it will take a while to

1277 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright law
1278 I can give to my parents and others that are reluctant to read an
1279 English book.  It is a marvellous set of examples on how the ever
1280 expanding copyright regulations hurt culture and society.  When the
1281 translation is done, I hope to find funding to print and ship a copy
1282 to all the members of the Norwegian parliament, before they sit down
1283 to debate the latest revisions to the Norwegian copyright law.  This
1284 summer I
1285 <a href="http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Dugnad_for___sende_norsk_versjon_av_Free_Culture_til_stortingets_representanter_.html">called
1286 for volunteers</a> to help me, and I have been able to secure the
1287 valuable contribution from at least one other Norwegian.</p>

1289 <p>Two days ago, we finally broke the 50% mark.  Then more than 50% of
1290 the number of strings to translate (normally paragraphs, but also
1291 titles and index entries are also counted).  All parts from the
1292 beginning up to and including chapter four is translated.  So is
1293 chapters six, seven and the conclusion.  I created a graph to show the

1303 english version of the docbook source.</p>

1306 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle

1344 the language used at the top, and the processing pipeline will use
1345 this information to pick the correct translations for 'chapter', 'see
1346 also', 'index' etc.  And for most languages used with docbook, I guess
1347 this work just fine.  For example a German user can start the document
1348 with &lt;book lang="de"&gt;, and the document will show up with the
1349 correct content with any of the docbook processors.  This is not the
1350 case for the language
1351 <a href="http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Free_Culture_in_Norwegian___5_chapters_done__74_percent_left_to_do.html">I
1352 am working with at the moment</a>, Norwegian Bokmål.</p>

1354 <p>For a while, I was confused about which language code to use,
1355 because I was unable to find any language code that would work across
1356 all tools.  I am currently testing dblatex, xmlto, docbook-xsl, and
1357 dbtoepub, and they do not handle Norwegian Bokmål the same way.  Some
1358 of them do not handle it at all.</p>

1360 <p>A bit of background information is probably needed to understand
1361 this mess.  Norwegian is not one, but two written variants.  The
1362 variants are Norwegian Nynorsk and Norwegian Bokmål.  There are three
1363 two letter language codes associated with these languages, Norwegian
1364 is 'no', Norwegian Nynorsk is 'nn' and Norwegian Bokmål is 'nb'.
1365 Historically the 'no' language code was used for Norwegian Bokmål, but
1366 many years ago this was found to be å bad idea, and the recommendation
1367 is to use the most specific language code instead, to avoid confusion.
1368 In the transition period it is a good idea to make sure 'no' was an
1369 alias for 'nb'.</p>

1371 <p>Back to docbook processing tools in Debian.  The dblatex tool only
1372 understand 'nn'.  There are translations for 'no', but not 'nb' (BTS
1373 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/684391">#684391</a>), but due to a bug
1374 (BTS <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/682936">#682936</a>) the 'no'
1375 language code is not recognised.  The docbook-xsl tool chain only
1376 recognise 'nn' and 'nb', but not 'no'.  The xmlto tool only recognise
1377 'nn' and 'nb', but not 'no'.  The end result that there is no language
1378 code I can use to get the docbook file working with all of these tools
1379 at the same time. :(</p>

1418 translation of the book Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig, and I use

1495 <p>I am happy to report that the draft for the first two chapters
1496 (preface, introduction) is complete, and three other chapters are also
1497 completely translated.  This completes 26 percent of the number of
1498 strings (equivalent to paragraphs) in the book, and there is thus 74

1500 bottom of the github project page.  There is still room for more
1501 contributors.  Get in touch or send github pull requests with fixes if
1502 you got time and are willing to help make this book make it to
1503 print. :)</p>

1568         <p>Da opphavsrettsloven ble revidert i forrige runde rundt 2005, var
1569 det skummelt å se hvor lite stortingsrepresentantene forsto hvordan
1570 Internet påvirket folks forhold til kulturuttrykk, og min venn Vidar
1571 og jeg spekulert på at det hadde kanskje vært fornuftig om samtlige
1572 representanter fikk en norsk utgave av boken
1573 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> av Lawrence Lessig
1574 som forklarte litt om problemstillingene.  Vi endte opp med å
1575 prioritere utvikling i
1576 <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Skolelinux</a>-prosjektet i
1577 stedet, så den oversatte boken så aldri dagens lys.  Men i forrige uke
1578 ble jeg inspirert til å ta opp tråden og se om det er mulig å få til
1579 bokprosjektet denne gang, da det er tydelig at kulturdepartementet i
1580 sitt nye forsøk på å gjøre opphavsrettsloven enda mer ubalansert til
1581 fordel for forlag og store mediehus fortsatt trenger en annen vinkling
1582 i debatten.</p>

1584 <p>Planen min er å oversette boka på dugnad, sette den opp for
1585 trykking med en av de mange

1588 til stortingsrepresentantene og alle som har bidratt med

1601 Github-prosjekt</a> for a lage boken, basert på Docbook-utgaven jeg
1602 fant fra Hans Schou.  Skolelinux har hatt byggesystem for å lage
1603 oversatt HTML og PDF-utgave av Docbook-bøker i en årrekke, så jeg har
1604 kopiert og utvidet dette oppsettet.  Originalteksten er i Docbook, og
1605 oversettelsen gjøres i .po-filer med hjelp av vanlige
1606 oversetterverktøy brukt i fri programvareverden.  Dernest tar
1607 byggesystemet over og lager PDF og EPUB-utgave av den oversatte
1608 teksten.  Resultatet kan ses i Github-prosjektet.  For å komme raskt
1609 igang har jeg brukt maskinoversettelse av alle tekstbitene fra engelsk
1610 til norsk, noe som grovoversatte ca. 1300 av de ca. 1700 tekstbitene
1611 boken består av.  Jeg håper nå at flere kan bidra med å få
1612 oversettelsen på plass, slik at teksten kan være klar i løpet av
1613 høsten.  Når alt er oversatt må teksten gjennomgås for feil og
1614 konsistent språk.  Totalt er det nok mange timer som trengs for å
1615 gjennomføre oversettelsen.</p>

1617 <p>Økonomien i dette er ikke avskrekkende.  169
1618 stortingsrepresentanter og nesten like mange varamedlemmer bør få
1619 bøker, og estimert produduksjonskostnad for hver bok er rundt 6 EURO i
1620 følge et raskt estimat fra Lulu.  Jeg vet ennå ikke hvor mange sider
1621 det blir i størrelsen 5,5" x 8.5" (det er ca. 140 sider i A4-format),
1622 så jeg gjettet på 400 sider.  Jeg tror originalutgaven har nesten 400
1623 sider.  For 169*2 eksemplarer snakker vi om en trykkekostnad på
1624 ca. 2000 EURO, dvs. ca 15 000 NOK.  Det burde være mulig å finne en
1625 sponsor for å dekke en slik sum.  I tillegg kommer distribusjon og
1626 porto, som antagelig kommer på like mye.</p>
