  22 Creative Commons.  The English Edition sold 80 copies so far, the
  23 French 59 copies, and Norwegian only 8 copies.  Nothing impressive,

 102 Commons.  This time it is a book filled with interviews and histories
 103 from those around the globe making a living using Creative
 104 Commons.&lt;/p&gt;

 106 &lt;p&gt;Yesterday, after many months of hard work by several volunteer
 107 translators, the first draft of a Norwegian Bokmål edition of the book
 108 &lt;a href=&quot;https://madewith.cc&quot;&gt;Made with Creative Commons from 2017&lt;/a&gt;
 109 was complete.  The Spanish translation is also complete, while the
 110 Dutch, Polish, German and Ukraine edition need a lot of work.  Get in

 114 &lt;p&gt;The whole book project started when
 115 &lt;a href=&quot;http://gwolf.org/node/4102&quot;&gt;Gunnar Wolf announced&lt;/a&gt; that he
 116 was going to make a Spanish edition of the book.  I noticed, and
 117 offered some input on how to make a book, based on my experience with
 118 translating the

 123 long story short, we ended up working on a Bokmål edition, and now the
 124 first rough translation is complete, thanks to the hard work of
 125 Ole-Erik Yrvin, Ingrid Yrvin, Allan Nordhøy and myself.  The first
 126 proof reading is almost done, and only the second and third proof
 127 reading remains.  We will also need to translate the 14 figures and
 128 create a book cover.  Once it is done we will publish the book on
 129 paper, as well as in PDF, ePub and possibly Mobi formats.&lt;/p&gt;

 131 &lt;p&gt;The book itself originates as a manuscript on Google Docs, is
 132 downloaded as ODT from there and converted to Markdown using pandoc.
 133 The Markdown is modified by a script before is converted to DocBook
 134 using pandoc.  The DocBook is modified again using a script before it
 135 is used to create a Gettext POT file for translators.  The translated
 136 PO file is then combined with the earlier mentioned DocBook file to
 137 create a translated DocBook file, which finally is given to dblatex to
 138 create the final PDF.  The end result is a set of editions of the
 139 manuscript, one English and one for each of the translations.&lt;/p&gt;

 220 a French and Norwegian translation of the classic

 227 Corporation.  In other words, I do not earn any money from this
 228 project, I just earn the warm fuzzy feeling that the text is available
 229 for a wider audience and more people can learn why the Creative
 230 Commons is needed.&lt;/p&gt;

 554 printed, and the exterior of the book look awful, but that is
 555 irrelevant at this point.  I asked for a printed pocket book version
 556 to get an idea about the font sizes and paper format as well as how
 557 good the figures and images look in print, but also to test what the
 558 pocket book version would look like.  After receiving the 500 page
 559 pocket book, it became obvious to me that that pocket book size is too
 560 small for this book.  I believe the book is too thick, and several
 561 tables and figures do not look good in the size they get with that
 562 small page sizes.  I believe I will go with the 5.5x8.5 inch size
 563 instead.  A surprise discovery from the paper version was how bad the
 564 URLs look in print.  They are very hard to read in the colophon page.
 565 The URLs are red in the PDF, but light gray on paper.  I need to
 566 change the color of links somehow to look better.  But there is a
 567 printed book in my hand, and it feels great. :)&lt;/p&gt;

 767 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.&lt;/p&gt;

 769 &lt;p&gt;One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
 770 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
 771 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
 772 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
 773 in sync.  And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
 774 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
 775 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
 776 edit the documentation using a web browser.  We also want it to be
 777 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
 778 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
 779 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
 780 goals.&lt;/p&gt;

 782 &lt;p&gt;We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
 783 &lt;a href=&quot;https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/&quot;&gt;Debian
 784 wiki&lt;/a&gt;, as several wiki pages written in English.  It consist of one
 785 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
 786 for each chapter, and finally one &quot;collection page&quot; gluing all the
 787 chapters together into one large web page (aka
 788 &lt;a href=&quot;https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne&quot;&gt;the
 789 AllInOne page&lt;/a&gt;).  The AllInOne page is the one used for further
 790 processing and translations.  Thanks to the fact that the
 791 &lt;a href=&quot;http://moinmo.in/&quot;&gt;MoinMoin&lt;/a&gt; installation on
 792 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
 793 &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.docbook.org/&quot;&gt;the Docbook format&lt;/a&gt;, we can fetch
 794 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
 795 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
 796 manual.  This process also download images and transform image
 797 references to use the locally downloaded images.  The generated
 798 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
 799 using the &lt;tt&gt;documentation/scripts/get_manual&lt;/tt&gt; program, and the
 800 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
 801 a handfull of images.  The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
 802 and epub versions of the English manual.  This is the basic step of
 803 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
 804 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
 805 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.&lt;/p&gt;

 807 &lt;p&gt;But English documentation is not enough for us.  We want translated
 808 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
 809 track the English original.  For this we use the
 810 &lt;a href=&quot;http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html&quot;&gt;poxml&lt;/a&gt; package,
 811 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
 812 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
 813 translation tools used by those translating free software.  The pot
 814 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
 815 files), which the translations update with the native language
 816 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
 817 original.  The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
 818 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
 819 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
 820 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml).  This translated (or partly
 821 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
 822 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
 823 of the documentation.&lt;/p&gt;

 825 &lt;p&gt;The translators use different tools to edit the .po files.  We

 888 English docbook version with the paper version.  Last, the colophon
 889 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
 890 done.  I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
 891 of the index pages.  All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
 892 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
 893 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.&lt;/p&gt;

 895 &lt;p&gt;There is still need for translators and people with docbook
 896 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
 897 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
 898 translation and proof reading.  And I would like the figures to be
 899 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them.  Any SVG master
 900 around?  There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.

 942 minst det at idag går jo nesten alle rundt med lillebrødre på seg!&lt;/p&gt;

 960 lisens, og novellen utgis av EFN med en Creative Commons (CC)

 962 eller brukerne innebærer dette at de får en klar og standardisert
 963 beskjed om hvilke rettigheter de har til å dele novellen videre med
 964 andre. For forfatteren innebærer dette økt synlighet og
 965 tilgjengelighet for verket, slik at det ikke blir glemt, da
 966 søkemotorer og nettlesere inneholder egne søkevalg for CC-lisenser, og
 967 mange brukere søker etter verk som de vet de kan dele og bruke på
 968 lovlig vis.&lt;/p&gt;

 971 en fribrukslisens, slik at tekstene ikke blir glemt og for å stimulere

 973 og utlegging på nett, i den grad det finnes kapasitet blant EFNs
 974 medlemmer til dette. Vi mener at nyutgivelser av tekster under frie

1453 fant fra Hans Schou.  Skolelinux har hatt byggesystem for å lage
1454 oversatt HTML og PDF-utgave av Docbook-bøker i en årrekke, så jeg har
1455 kopiert og utvidet dette oppsettet.  Originalteksten er i Docbook, og
1456 oversettelsen gjøres i .po-filer med hjelp av vanlige
1457 oversetterverktøy brukt i fri programvareverden.  Dernest tar
1458 byggesystemet over og lager PDF og EPUB-utgave av den oversatte
1459 teksten.  Resultatet kan ses i Github-prosjektet.  For å komme raskt
1460 igang har jeg brukt maskinoversettelse av alle tekstbitene fra engelsk
1461 til norsk, noe som grovoversatte ca. 1300 av de ca. 1700 tekstbitene
1462 boken består av.  Jeg håper nå at flere kan bidra med å få
1463 oversettelsen på plass, slik at teksten kan være klar i løpet av
1464 høsten.  Når alt er oversatt må teksten gjennomgås for feil og
1465 konsistent språk.  Totalt er det nok mange timer som trengs for å
1466 gjennomføre oversettelsen.&lt;/p&gt;

1469 stortingsrepresentanter og nesten like mange varamedlemmer bør få
1470 bøker, og estimert produduksjonskostnad for hver bok er rundt 6 EURO i
1471 følge et raskt estimat fra Lulu.  Jeg vet ennå ikke hvor mange sider
1472 det blir i størrelsen 5,5&quot; x 8.5&quot; (det er ca. 140 sider i A4-format),
1473 så jeg gjettet på 400 sider.  Jeg tror originalutgaven har nesten 400
1474 sider.  For 169*2 eksemplarer snakker vi om en trykkekostnad på
1475 ca. 2000 EURO, dvs. ca 15 000 NOK.  Det burde være mulig å finne en
1476 sponsor for å dekke en slik sum.  I tillegg kommer distribusjon og
1477 porto, som antagelig kommer på like mye.&lt;/p&gt;
