26 about
27 the computer science book collection available in his local
28 library
, and just wanted to share my comment on his theory about
29 computer books becoming obsolete so soon. That is part of the reason
30 why the selection is so sad in almost any local library (it is in mine
31 too), but I believe the major contributing factor is that the people
32 buying books to the library have no way to know a good and future
33 computer classic from trash. And they need to know which one will
34 become a classic in the future, as they would normally buy one of the
35 recently published books.

37
During my university years, I worked for a while at the university
38 library, and even there the person in charge of buying computer
39 related books (and in fact any natural science related book), did not
40 know enough about computers to make a good educated guess. Once, just
41 before Christmas, they had some leftover money on the book budget and
42 I was asked if I could pick out a lot of computer books in the
43 university book store, for the library to buy for their collection. I
44 had a great time picking all the books I dreamt of buying and reading,
45 and the books I knew were classics (like most of the
46 Stevens
47 collection
). I picked several of the generic O'Reilly books (ie
48 documenting protocols, formats and systems, not specific versions of
49 products) and stayed away from the 'teach yourself X in N days' class.
50 I had a great time, and probably picked out more than a hundred books
51 for the library that evening.

53
The sad fact is that there is no way a overworked librarian is
54 going to know that for example
55 The
56 Practice of Programming
is a must-have in any computer library,
57 and they will most of the time end up picking the wrong books to buy.
58 Perhaps you can help your local library make better choices by giving
59 the suggestions for books to get? I know they would love to hear from
60 you, even if their budget might block them from getting your favourite

77 stavekontrollen, og gikk ut versjon
2.1 etter at det var gått fire og
78 et halvt år siden sist. I dag fikk vi sendt ut annonseringen. Her er

83
Pressemelding: Ny utgave av norsk stavekontroll med
84 synonymordliste

86

90
«e-post»). Litt
92 over
For å få

104

116 no.speling.org
. Ferdige pakker for

120 prosjekter for blant annet å forbedre stavekontrollteknologien, å

308 Learn, Adapt: Developing Public Policy with Randomised Controlled

311 Battling bad

313 vitenskaplige metoder i større grad for å finne ut hvilke virkemidler

318
Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are the best way to determine
319 wheather a policy is working. They are now used extensively in
320 international development, medicine, and business to identify which
321 policy, drug or sales method is most effective. They are also at
322 the heart of the Behavioural Insights Team's methodology.

324
However, RCTs are not rutinely used to test the effectiveness of
325 public policy interventions in the UK. We think they should be.

328

"body">
After a long break in my row of interviews with people in the
348 Debian Edu and Skolelinux

349 community, I finally found time to wrap up another. This time it is
350 Giorgio Pioda, which showed up on the mailing list at the start of
351 this year, asking questions and inspiring us to improve the first time
352 administrators experience with Skolelinux. :) The interview was
353 conduced in May, but I only found time to publish it now.

355
Who are you, and how do you spend your days?

357
I have a PhD in chemistry but since several years I work as teacher
358 in secondary (
15-
18 year old students) and tertiary (a kind of "light"
359 university) schools. Five years ago I started to manage a Learning
360 Management Service server and slowly I got more and more involved with
361 IT.
3 years ago the graduating schools moved completely to Linux and I
362 got the head of the IT for this. The experience collected in chemistry
363 labs computers (for example NMR analysis of protein folding) and in
364 the IT-courses during university where sufficient to start. Self
365 training is anyway very important

367
I live in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland, and the
368 SPSE school
(secondary) is a very
369 special sport school for young people who try to became sport pro (for
370 all sports, we have dozens of disciplines represented) and we are
371 recognised by the Olympic Swiss Organisation.
373
How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux/Debian Edu
374 project?

376
Looking for Linux / Primary Domain Controller (PDC) I found it
377 already several years ago. But since the system was still not
378 Kerberized and since our schools relies strongly on laptops I didn't
379 use it. I plan to introduce it in the next future, probably for the
380 next school year, since the squeeze release solved this security
383
What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux/Debian
386
Many. First of all there is a strong and living community that is
387 very generous for help and hints. Chat help is crucial, together with
388 the mailing list. Second. With Skolelinux you get an already well
389 engineered platform and you don't have to start to build up your PDC
390 and your clients from GNU/scratch; I've already done this once and I
391 can tell it, it is hard. Third, since Skolelinux is a standard
392 platform, it is way easier to educate other IT people and even if the
393 head IT is sick another one could pick up the task without too much
396
What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux/Debian
399
The only real problem I see is that it is a little too less
400 flexible at client level. Debian stable is rocky and desirable, but
401 there are many reasons that force for another choice. For example the
402 need of new drivers for new PC, or the need for a specific OS for some
403 devices that have specific software packages for another specific
404 distribution (I have such a case for whiteboards that have only
405 Ubuntu packages). Thus, I prepared compatibility packages educlient
406 and eduroaming, hoping not to use them ;-)

408
Which free software do you use daily?

410
I have a Debian Stable PDC at school (Kerberos, NIS, NFS) with
411 mixed Debian and Ubuntu clients. If you think that this triad
412 combination is exotic... well I discovered right yesterday that
413 Perceus

416
For myself I run Debian wheezy/sid, but this combination is good
417 only I you have enough competence to fix stuff for yourself, if
418 something breaks. Daily I use texmacs, gnumeric, a little bit of R
419 statistics, kmplot, and less frequently OpenOffice.org.

421
Which strategy do you believe is the right one to use to
422 get schools to use free software?

424
I think that the only real argument that school managers "hear" is
425 cost reduction. They don't give too much weight on quality, stability,
426 just because they are normally not open to change.

428
Students adapts very quickly to GNU/Linux (and for them being able
429 to switch between different OS is a plus value); teachers and managers
432
We decided to move to Linux because students at our school have own
433 laptop and we have the responsibility to keep the laptop ready to use;
434 we were really unsatisfied with Microsoft since every Monday we had
20
435 machine to fix for viral infections... With Linux this has been
436 reduced to zero, since people installs almost only from official
437 repositories. I think that our special needs brought us to Linux.
438 Those who don't have such needs will hardly move to Linux.

524 of the Opus Audio Codec

526 far as I know, that IETF have standardized a multimedia codec. In
527 RFC
3533, IETF
528 standardized the OGG container format, and it has proven to be a great
529 royalty free container for audio, video and movies. I hope IETF will
530 continue to standardize more royalty free codeces, after ISO and MPEG
531 have proven incapable of securing everyone equal rights to publish

534
IETF require two interoperating independent implementations to
535 ratify a standard, and have so far ensured to only standardize royalty

537 poor), to compete on equal terms on the Internet.
