  31         <p>I am working on publishing yet another book related to Creative
  32 Commons.  This time it is a book filled with interviews and histories
  33 from those around the globe making a living using Creative
  34 Commons.</p>

  36 <p>Yesterday, after many months of hard work by several volunteer
  37 translators, the first draft of a Norwegian Bokmål edition of the book
  38 <a href="https://madewith.cc">Made with Creative Commons from 2017</a>
  39 was complete.  The Spanish translation is also complete, while the
  40 Dutch, Polish, German and Ukraine edition need a lot of work.  Get in
  41 touch if you want to help make those happen, or would like to
  42 translate into your mother tongue.</p>

  44 <p>The whole book project started when
  45 <a href="http://gwolf.org/node/4102">Gunnar Wolf announced</a> that he
  46 was going to make a Spanish edition of the book.  I noticed, and
  47 offered some input on how to make a book, based on my experience with
  48 translating the
  49 <a href="https://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/fri-kultur/paperback/product-22441576.html">Free
  50 Culture</a> and
  51 <a href="https://debian-handbook.info/get/#norwegian">The Debian
  52 Administrator's Handbook</a> books to Norwegian Bokmål.  To make a
  53 long story short, we ended up working on a Bokmål edition, and now the
  54 first rough translation is complete, thanks to the hard work of
  55 Ole-Erik Yrvin, Ingrid Yrvin, Allan Nordhøy and myself.  The first
  56 proof reading is almost done, and only the second and third proof
  57 reading remains.  We will also need to translate the 14 figures and
  58 create a book cover.  Once it is done we will publish the book on
  59 paper, as well as in PDF, ePub and possibly Mobi formats.</p>

  61 <p>The book itself originates as a manuscript on Google Docs, is
  62 downloaded as ODT from there and converted to Markdown using pandoc.
  63 The Markdown is modified by a script before is converted to DocBook
  64 using pandoc.  The DocBook is modified again using a script before it
  65 is used to create a Gettext POT file for translators.  The translated
  66 PO file is then combined with the earlier mentioned DocBook file to
  67 create a translated DocBook file, which finally is given to dblatex to
  68 create the final PDF.  The end result is a set of editions of the
  69 manuscript, one English and one for each of the translations.</p>

  72 <a href="https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/madewithcc/translation/">the
  73 Weblate web based translation system</a>.  Please have a look there

 100         <p>It is pleasing to see that the work we put down in publishing new
 101 editions of the classic <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free
 102 Culture book</a> by the founder of the Creative Commons movement,
 103 Lawrence Lessig, is still being appreciated.  I had a look at the
 104 latest sales numbers for the paper edition today.  Not too impressive,
 105 but happy to see some buyers still exist.  All the revenue from the
 106 books is sent to the <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative
 107 Commons Corporation</a>, and they receive the largest cut if you buy
 108 directly from Lulu.  Most books are sold via Amazon, with Ingram
 109 second and only a small fraction directly from Lulu.  The ebook
 110 edition is available for free from

 173         <p>As my regular readers probably remember, the last year I published
 174 a French and Norwegian translation of the classic
 175 <a href="http://www.free-culture.cc/">Free Culture book</a> by the
 176 founder of the Creative Commons movement, Lawrence Lessig.  A bit less
 177 known is the fact that due to the way I created the translations,
 178 using docbook and po4a, I also recreated the English original.  And
 179 because I already had created a new the PDF edition, I published it
 180 too.  The revenue from the books are sent to the Creative Commons
 181 Corporation.  In other words, I do not earn any money from this
 182 project, I just earn the warm fuzzy feeling that the text is available
 183 for a wider audience and more people can learn why the Creative
 184 Commons is needed.</p>

 186 <p>Today, just for fun, I had a look at the sales number over at
 187 Lulu.com, which take care of payment, printing and shipping.  Much to
 188 my surprise, the English edition is selling better than both the
 189 French and Norwegian edition, despite the fact that it has been
 190 available in English since it was first published.  In total, 24 paper
 191 books was sold for USD $19.99 between 2016-01-01 and 2016-07-31:</p>

 201 stores like Amazon and Barnes&Noble.  Most revenue, around $10 per
 202 book, is sent to the Creative Commons project when the book is sold

 204 summary from Lulu tell me 10 books was sold via the Amazon channel, 10
 205 via Ingram (what is this?) and 4 directly by Lulu.  And Lulu.com tells
 206 me that the revenue sent so far this year is USD $101.42.  No idea
 207 what kind of sales numbers to expect, so I do not know if that is a
 208 good amount of sales for a 10 year old book or not.  But it make me
 209 happy that the buyers find the book, and I hope they enjoy reading it
 210 as much as I did.</p>

 285 Lulu.com.  Once I have formally verified my proof reading copy, which
 286 should be in the mail, the paperback edition should be available in
 287 book stores like Amazon and Barnes & Noble too.</p>

 289 <p>This French edition, Culture Libre, is the work of the
 290 <a href="http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/">dblatex</a> developer Benoît
 291 Guillon, who created the PO file from the initial translation
 292 available from
 293 <a href="http://www.wikilivres.ca/wiki/Culture_libre">the Wikilivres
 294 wiki pages</a> and completed and corrected the translation to match
 295 the original docbook edition my project is using, as well as
 296 coordinated the proof reading of the final result.  I believe the end
 297 result look great, but I am biased and do not read French.  In
 298 addition to the paperback edition, the book is available in PDF, EPUB
 299 and Mobi format from the github project page linked to above.</p>

 301 <p>When enabling book store distribution on Lulu.com, I had to nearly
 302 triple the price to allow the book stores some profit.  I also had to
 303 accept that I will get some revenue when a book is sold via Lulu.com.
 304 But because of the non-commercial clause in the book license
 305 (CC-BY-NC), this might be a problem.  To bypass the problem I
 306 discussed how to handle the revenue with the author, and we agreed
 307 that the revenue for these editions go to the
 308 <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons non-profit
 309 Corporation</a> who handle donations to the Creative Commons project.
 310 So far they have earned around USD 70 on sales of the
 311 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/free-culture/paperback/product-22440520.html">English</a>
 312 and
 313 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/shop/lawrence-lessig/fri-kultur/paperback/product-22441576.html">Norwegian
 314 Bokmål</a> editions, according to Lulu.com.  They will get the revenue
 315 for the French edition too.  Their revenue is higher if you buy the
 316 book directly from Lulu.com instead of via a book store, so I
 317 recommend you buy directly from Lulu.com.</p>

 418 <p>In 2004, as the <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons
 419 movement</a> gained momentum, its creator Lawrence Lessig wrote the
 420 book <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Culture_(book)">Free
 421 Culture</a> to explain the problems with increasing copyright
 422 regulation and suggest some solutions.  I read the book back then and
 423 was very moved by it.  Reading the book inspired me and changed the
 424 way I looked on copyright law, and I would love it if more people
 425 would read it too.</p>

 427 <p>Because of this, I decided in the summer of 2012 to translate it to
 428 Norwegian Bokmål and publish it for those of my friends and family
 429 that prefer to read books in Norwegian.  I translated the book using
 430 docbook and a gettext PO file, and a byproduct of this process is a
 431 new edition of the English original.  I've been in touch with the
 432 author during by work, and he said it was fine with him if I also
 433 published an English version.  So I decided to do so.  Today, I made
 434 this edition

 493 to try to create a French version of the book.  He started with the

 496 pages</a>, and wrote a program to convert it into a PO file, allowing
 497 the translation to be integrated into the po4a based framework I use
 498 to create the Norwegian translation from the English edition.  We meet

 526         <p>Creating a good looking book cover proved harder than I expected.
 527 I wanted to create a cover looking similar to the original cover of
 528 the
 529 <a href="https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/free-culture-lessig">Free
 530 Culture</a> book we are translating to Norwegian, and I wanted it in
 531 vector format for high resolution printing.  But my inkscape knowledge
 532 were not nearly good enough to pull that off.

 534 <p>But thanks to the great inkscape community, I was able to wrap up
 535 the cover yesterday evening.  I asked on the
 536 <a href="irc://irc.freenode.net/%23inkscape">#inkscape IRC channel</a>
 537 on Freenode for help and clues, and Marc Jeanmougin (Mc-) volunteered
 538 to try to recreate it based on the PDF of the cover from the HTML
 539 version.  Not only did he create a
 540 <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/copy1.svg ">SVG document with
 541 the original and his vector version side by side</a>, he even provided
 542 an <a href="https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/out-1.ogv">instruction
 543 video</a> explaining how he did it</a>.  But the instruction video is
 544 not easy to follow for an untrained inkscape user. The video is a
 545 recording on how he did it, and he is obviously very experienced as
 546 the menu selections are very quick and he mentioned on IRC that he did
 547 use some keyboard shortcuts that can't be seen on the video, but it
 548 give a good idea about the inkscape operations to use to create the
 549 stripes with the embossed copyright sign in the center.</p>

 551 <p>I took his SVG file, copied the vector image and re-sized it to fit
 552 on the cover I was drawing.  I am happy with the end result, and the
 553 current english version look like this:</p>

 564 to upload the final draft to Lulu in the next few days and order a
 565 final proof reading copy to verify that everything look like it should
 566 before allowing everyone to order their own copy of Free Culture, in
 567 English or Norwegian Bokmål.  I'm waiting to give the the productive
 568 proof readers a chance to complete their work.</p>

 589         <p>Today, finally, my first printed draft edition of the Norwegian
 590 translation of Free Culture I have been working on for the last few
 591 years arrived in the mail.  I had to fake a cover to get the interior
 592 printed, and the exterior of the book look awful, but that is
 593 irrelevant at this point.  I asked for a printed pocket book version
 594 to get an idea about the font sizes and paper format as well as how
 595 good the figures and images look in print, but also to test what the
 596 pocket book version would look like.  After receiving the 500 page
 597 pocket book, it became obvious to me that that pocket book size is too
 598 small for this book.  I believe the book is too thick, and several
 599 tables and figures do not look good in the size they get with that
 600 small page sizes.  I believe I will go with the 5.5x8.5 inch size
 601 instead.  A surprise discovery from the paper version was how bad the
 602 URLs look in print.  They are very hard to read in the colophon page.
 603 The URLs are red in the PDF, but light gray on paper.  I need to
 604 change the color of links somehow to look better.  But there is a
 605 printed book in my hand, and it feels great. :)</p>

 607 <p>Now I only need to fix the cover, wrap up the postscript with the
 608 store behind the book, and collect the last corrections from the proof
 609 readers before the book is ready for proper printing.  Cover artists
 610 willing to work for free and create a Creative Commons licensed vector
 611 file looking similar to the original is most welcome, as my skills as
 612 a graphics designer are mostly missing.</p>

 633         <p>Typesetting a book is harder than I hoped.  As the translation is
 634 mostly done, and a volunteer proof reader was going to check the text
 635 on paper, it was time this summer to focus on formatting my translated
 636 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> based version of the
 637 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> book by Lawrence
 638 Lessig.  I've been trying to get both docboox-xsl+fop and dblatex to
 639 give me a good looking PDF, but in the end I went with dblatex, because
 640 its Debian maintainer and upstream developer were responsive and very
 641 helpful in solving my formatting challenges.</p>

 643 <p>Last night, I finally managed to create a PDF that no longer made
 644 <a href="http://www.lulu.com/">Lulu.com</a> complain after uploading,
 645 and I ordered a text version of the book on paper.  It is lacking a
 646 proper book cover and is not tagged with the correct ISBN number, but
 647 should give me an idea what the finished book will look like.</p>

 649 <p>Instead of using Lulu, I did consider printing the book using
 650 <a href="http://www.createspace.com/">CreateSpace</a>, but ended up
 651 using Lulu because it had smaller book size options (CreateSpace seem
 652 to lack pocket book with extended distribution).  I looked for a
 653 similar service in Norway, but have not seen anything so far.  Please
 654 let me know if I am missing out on something here.</p>

 656 <p>But I still struggle to decide the book size.  Should I go for
 657 pocket book (4.25x6.875 inches / 10.8x17.5 cm) with 556 pages, Digest
 658 (5.5x8.5 inches / 14x21.6 cm) with 323 pages or US Trade (6x8 inches /
 659 15.3x22.9 cm) with 280 pages?  Fewer pager give a cheaper book, and a
 660 smaller book is easier to carry around.  The test book I ordered was
 661 pocket book sized, to give me an idea how well that fit in my hand,
 662 but I suspect I will end up using a digest sized book in the end to
 663 bring the prize down further.</p>

 665 <p>My biggest challenge at the moment is making nice cover art.  My
 666 inkscape skills are not yet up to the task of replicating the original
 667 cover in SVG format.  I also need to figure out what to write about
 668 the book on the back (will most likely use the same text as the
 669 description on web based book stores).  I would love help with this,
 670 if you are willing to license the art source and final version using
 671 the same CC license as the book.  My artistic skills are not really up
 672 to the task.</p>

 713 chapter.  Based on the

 715 maintainer and the dblatex developer</a>, I came up with this recipe I
 716 would like to share with you.  The proposal was to create a new LaTeX
 717 class file and add the LaTeX code there, but this is not always
 718 practical, when I want to be able to replace the class using a make
 719 file variable.  So my proposal misuses the latex.begindocument XSL
 720 parameter value, to get a small fragment into the correct location in
 721 the generated LaTeX File.</p>

 821 need to be rewritten, and a few words and phrases still need to be
 822 translated, but the Norwegian text is ready for the first proof
 823 reading. :) More spell checking is needed, and several illustrations
 824 need to be cleaned up.  The work stopped up because I had to give
 825 priority to other projects the last year, and the progress graph of

 861         <p>The <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Debian Edu / Skolelinux
 862 project</a> provide an instruction manual for teachers, system
 863 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
 864 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation.  This text is about how the
 865 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.</p>
 866
 867 <p>One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
 868 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
 869 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
 870 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
 871 in sync.  And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
 872 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
 873 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
 874 edit the documentation using a web browser.  We also want it to be
 875 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
 876 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
 877 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
 878 goals.</p>
 879
 880 <p>We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
 881 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/">Debian
 882 wiki</a>, as several wiki pages written in English.  It consist of one
 883 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
 884 for each chapter, and finally one "collection page" gluing all the
 885 chapters together into one large web page (aka
 886 <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne">the
 887 AllInOne page</a>).  The AllInOne page is the one used for further
 888 processing and translations.  Thanks to the fact that the
 889 <a href="http://moinmo.in/">MoinMoin</a> installation on
 890 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
 891 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">the Docbook format</a>, we can fetch
 892 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
 893 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
 894 manual.  This process also download images and transform image
 895 references to use the locally downloaded images.  The generated
 896 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
 897 using the <tt>documentation/scripts/get_manual</tt> program, and the
 898 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
 899 a handfull of images.  The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
 900 and epub versions of the English manual.  This is the basic step of
 901 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
 902 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
 903 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.</p>
 904
 905 <p>But English documentation is not enough for us.  We want translated
 906 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
 907 track the English original.  For this we use the
 908 <a href="http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html">poxml</a> package,
 909 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
 910 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
 911 translation tools used by those translating free software.  The pot
 912 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
 913 files), which the translations update with the native language
 914 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
 915 original.  The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
 916 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
 917 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
 918 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml).  This translated (or partly
 919 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
 920 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
 921 of the documentation.</p>

 923 <p>The translators use different tools to edit the .po files.  We
 924 recommend using
 925 <a href="http://www.kde.org/applications/development/lokalize/">lokalize</a>,
 926 while some use emacs and vi, others can use web based editors like
 927 <a href="http://pootle.translatehouse.org/">Poodle</a> or
 928 <a href="https://www.transifex.com/">Transifex</a>.  All we care about
 929 is where the .po file end up, in our git repository.  Updated
 930 translations can either be committed directly to git, or submitted as
 931 <a href="https://bugs.debian.org/src:debian-edu-doc">bug reports
 932 against the debian-edu-doc package</a>.</p>

 934 <p>One challenge is images, which both might need to be translated (if
 935 they show translated user applications), and are needed in different
 936 formats when creating PDF and HTML versions (epub is a HTML version in
 937 this regard).  For this we transform the original PNG images to the
 938 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
 939 translated images by storing translated versions in
 940 images/$LANGUAGECODE/.  I am a bit unsure about the details here.  The
 941 package maintainers know more.</p>

 979         <p>It has been a while since my last update.  Since last summer, I
 980 have worked on a Norwegian
 981 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">docbook</a> version of the 2004 book
 982 <a href="http://free-culture.cc/">Free Culture</a> by Lawrence Lessig,
 983 to get a Norwegian text explaining the problems with the copyright
 984 law.  Yesterday, I finally broken the 90% mark, when counting the
 985 number of strings to translate.  Due to real life constraints, I have
 986 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
 987 I found time to work on it again.  Still lots of work left, but the
 988 first draft is nearing completion.  I created a graph to show the
 989 progress of the translation:</p>

 994 proof read, and the remaining formatting problems with images and SVG

 996 missing that need to be added.  This can be done by comparing the
 997 index entries listed in the SiSU version of the book, or comparing the
 998 English docbook version with the paper version.  Last, the colophon
 999 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
1000 done.  I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
1001 of the index pages.  All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
1002 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
1003 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.</p>

1005 <p>There is still need for translators and people with docbook
1006 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
1007 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
1008 translation and proof reading.  And I would like the figures to be
1009 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them.  Any SVG master
1010 around?  There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.

1156         <p>A few days ago, during a discussion in
1157 <a href="http://www.efn.no/">EFN</a> about interesting books to read
1158 about copyright and the data retention directive, a suggestion to read
1159 the 1968 short story Kodémus by
1160 <a href="http://web2.gyldendal.no/toraage/">Tore Åge Bringsværd</a>
1161 came up.  The text was only available in old paper books, and thus not
1162 easily available for current and future generations.  Some of the
1163 people participating in the discussion contacted the author, and
1164 reported back 2013-03-19 that the author was OK with releasing the
1165 short story using a <a href="http://www.creativecommons.org/">Creative
1166 Commons</a> license.  The text was quickly scanned and OCR-ed, and we
1167 were ready to start on the editing and typesetting.</p>

1169 <p>As I already had some experience formatting text in my project to
1170 provide a Norwegian version of the Free Culture book by Lawrence
1171 Lessig, I chipped in and set up a
1172 <a href="http://www.docbook.org/">DocBook</a> processing framework to
1173 generate PDF, HTML and EPUB version of the short story.  The tools to
1174 transform DocBook to different formats are already in my Linux
1175 distribution of choice, <a href="http://www.debian.org/">Debian</a>, so
1176 all I had to do was to use the
1177 <a href="http://dblatex.sourceforge.net/">dblatex</a>,
1178 <a href="http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/epub/README">dbtoepub</a>
1179 and <a href="https://fedorahosted.org/xmlto/">xmlto</a> tools to do the
1180 conversion.  After a few days, we decided to replace dblatex with
1181 xsltproc/fop (aka
1182 <a href="http://wiki.docbook.org/DocBookXslStylesheets">docbook-xsl</a>),
1183 to get the copyright information to show up in the PDF and to get a
1184 nicer &lt;variablelist&gt; typesetting, but that is just a minor
1185 technical detail.</p>

1187 <p>There were a few challenges, of course.  We want to typeset the
1188 short story to look like the original, and that require fairly good
1189 control over the layout.  The original short story have three
1190 parts/scenes separated by a single horizontally centred star (*), and
1191 the paragraphs do not contain only flowing text, but dialogs and text
1192 that started on a new line in the middle of the paragraph.</p>

1194 <p>I initially solved the first challenge by using a paragraph with a
1195 single star in it, ie &lt;para&gt;*&lt;/para&gt;, but it made sure a
1196 placeholder indicated where the scene shifted.  This did not look too
1197 good without the centring.  The next approach was to create a new
1198 preprocessor directive &lt;?newscene?&gt;, mapping to "&lt;hr/&gt;"
1199 for HTML and "&lt;fo:block text-align="center"&gt;&lt;fo:leader

1296 in the current copyright laws, and I want it to be available also for

1351 to all the members of the Norwegian parliament, before they sit down
1352 to debate the latest revisions to the Norwegian copyright law.  This

1413 the language used at the top, and the processing pipeline will use
1414 this information to pick the correct translations for 'chapter', 'see
1415 also', 'index' etc.  And for most languages used with docbook, I guess
1416 this work just fine.  For example a German user can start the document
1417 with &lt;book lang="de"&gt;, and the document will show up with the
1418 correct content with any of the docbook processors.  This is not the
1419 case for the language

1421 am working with at the moment</a>, Norwegian Bokmål.</p>

1423 <p>For a while, I was confused about which language code to use,
1424 because I was unable to find any language code that would work across
1425 all tools.  I am currently testing dblatex, xmlto, docbook-xsl, and
1426 dbtoepub, and they do not handle Norwegian Bokmål the same way.  Some
1427 of them do not handle it at all.</p>

1429 <p>A bit of background information is probably needed to understand
1430 this mess.  Norwegian is not one, but two written variants.  The
1431 variants are Norwegian Nynorsk and Norwegian Bokmål.  There are three
1432 two letter language codes associated with these languages, Norwegian
1433 is 'no', Norwegian Nynorsk is 'nn' and Norwegian Bokmål is 'nb'.
1434 Historically the 'no' language code was used for Norwegian Bokmål, but
1435 many years ago this was found to be å bad idea, and the recommendation
1436 is to use the most specific language code instead, to avoid confusion.
1437 In the transition period it is a good idea to make sure 'no' was an
1438 alias for 'nb'.</p>

1440 <p>Back to docbook processing tools in Debian.  The dblatex tool only
1441 understand 'nn'.  There are translations for 'no', but not 'nb' (BTS
1442 <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/684391">#684391</a>), but due to a bug
1443 (BTS <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/682936">#682936</a>) the 'no'
1444 language code is not recognised.  The docbook-xsl tool chain only
1445 recognise 'nn' and 'nb', but not 'no'.  The xmlto tool only recognise
1446 'nn' and 'nb', but not 'no'.  The end result that there is no language
1447 code I can use to get the docbook file working with all of these tools
1448 at the same time. :(</p>

1487 translation of the book Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig, and I use

1569 bottom of the github project page.  There is still room for more

1638 det skummelt å se hvor lite stortingsrepresentantene forsto hvordan
1639 Internet påvirket folks forhold til kulturuttrykk, og min venn Vidar
1640 og jeg spekulert på at det hadde kanskje vært fornuftig om samtlige
1641 representanter fikk en norsk utgave av boken

1643 som forklarte litt om problemstillingene.  Vi endte opp med å
1644 prioritere utvikling i
1645 <a href="http://www.skolelinux.org/">Skolelinux</a>-prosjektet i
1646 stedet, så den oversatte boken så aldri dagens lys.  Men i forrige uke
1647 ble jeg inspirert til å ta opp tråden og se om det er mulig å få til
1648 bokprosjektet denne gang, da det er tydelig at kulturdepartementet i
1649 sitt nye forsøk på å gjøre opphavsrettsloven enda mer ubalansert til

1670 Github-prosjekt</a> for a lage boken, basert på Docbook-utgaven jeg
1671 fant fra Hans Schou.  Skolelinux har hatt byggesystem for å lage
1672 oversatt HTML og PDF-utgave av Docbook-bøker i en årrekke, så jeg har
1673 kopiert og utvidet dette oppsettet.  Originalteksten er i Docbook, og
1674 oversettelsen gjøres i .po-filer med hjelp av vanlige
1675 oversetterverktøy brukt i fri programvareverden.  Dernest tar
1676 byggesystemet over og lager PDF og EPUB-utgave av den oversatte
1677 teksten.  Resultatet kan ses i Github-prosjektet.  For å komme raskt
1678 igang har jeg brukt maskinoversettelse av alle tekstbitene fra engelsk
1679 til norsk, noe som grovoversatte ca. 1300 av de ca. 1700 tekstbitene
1680 boken består av.  Jeg håper nå at flere kan bidra med å få
1681 oversettelsen på plass, slik at teksten kan være klar i løpet av
1682 høsten.  Når alt er oversatt må teksten gjennomgås for feil og
1683 konsistent språk.  Totalt er det nok mange timer som trengs for å
1684 gjennomføre oversettelsen.</p>

1686 <p>Økonomien i dette er ikke avskrekkende.  169
1687 stortingsrepresentanter og nesten like mange varamedlemmer bør få
1688 bøker, og estimert produduksjonskostnad for hver bok er rundt 6 EURO i
1689 følge et raskt estimat fra Lulu.  Jeg vet ennå ikke hvor mange sider
1690 det blir i størrelsen 5,5" x 8.5" (det er ca. 140 sider i A4-format),
1691 så jeg gjettet på 400 sider.  Jeg tror originalutgaven har nesten 400
1692 sider.  For 169*2 eksemplarer snakker vi om en trykkekostnad på
1693 ca. 2000 EURO, dvs. ca 15 000 NOK.  Det burde være mulig å finne en
1694 sponsor for å dekke en slik sum.  I tillegg kommer distribusjon og
1695 porto, som antagelig kommer på like mye.</p>
