20 intervjurunde av folkene bak Skolelinux-løsningen. Jeg har kjent Alf
21 Tonny siden vi møttes som barn på påskefjellet i Ofoten, og ble
22 gledelig overrasket da han dukket opp i Skolelinux-prosjektet etter å
23 ikke ha sett noe til ham på mange år.&lt;/p&gt;

25 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hvem er du, og hva driver du med til daglig?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

27 &lt;p&gt;Jeg er utdannet kokk av yrke, og har utøvet yrket i 12 år. Men
28 etter at ryggen sa takk før seg, studerte jeg nettverksadministrasjon
29 ved Næringsakademiet i Bergen årene 2008-2009 slik at jeg kunne
30 forfølge en av mine største interesser - data. Til daglig jobber jeg
31 ved &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.narvikskolen.no/parken/&quot;&gt;Parken
32 ungdomsskole&lt;/a&gt; med å drifte skolens PC-er. Har også litt
33 musikkundervisning.&lt;/p&gt;

35 &lt;p&gt;Mitt mål er å bevisstgjøre musikklærene mulighetene med de frie
36 programmene som finnes i Skolelinux, blant annet Rosegarden.&lt;/p&gt;

38 &lt;p&gt;Har i mange år drevet med musikk og en av grunnen til at Rosegarden
39 falt i smak for min del, var fordi denne fungere og ligner mest på
40 Windows-programmet (cubase) jeg jobbet mye med da jeg i mine yngre
41 dager var «Windows fanatiker». Ble introdusert til Linux av en kompis
42 av meg for omtrent 14 år siden, og har bare blitt mer og mer glad i
43 dette operativsystemet.&lt;/p&gt;

45 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hvordan kom du i kontakt med Skolelinux-prosjektet?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

47 &lt;p&gt;Da jeg ble sykemeldt fra min gamle jobb, og måtte omskoleres,
48 havnet jeg i 2007 sammen med Viggo Fedreheim på IKT-avdelingen i
49 Narvik kommune, der ble jeg for første gang introdusert til
50 Skolelinuxprosjektet.&lt;/p&gt;

52 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hva er fordelene med Skolelinux slik du ser det?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

54 &lt;p&gt;Skolelinux er enkelt å holde i drift og masse flotte programmer som
55 geogebra, ktouch og kgeografi følger med pakken. Man kan ta i bruk
56 gamle PC-er igjen, slik at skoler med dårlig råd får opp en brukbar
57 PC-park. PC-er som er ca 6-9 år gamle fungere tilfredstillende, bare
58 de har 512 MB RAM eller mer.&lt;/p&gt;

60 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hva er ulempene med Skolelinux slik du ser det?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

62 &lt;p&gt;Ulempene er at noen av de pedagogiske programmene som lærene ønsker
63 å bruke fungere dårlig med Linux. Mye pga. av at disse programmene
64 blir ikke laget til Linuxbaserte operativsystemer.&lt;/p&gt;

66 &lt;p&gt;Video- og bilde-redigering har dessverre en del mangler, mange av
67 programmene har en tendens til og krasje. Det gjelder blant annet
68 &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.kdenlive.org/&quot;&gt;kdenlive&lt;/a&gt; og
69 &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.openshotvideo.com/&quot;&gt;openshot&lt;/a&gt;, for å nevne
70 noen. De er ikke stabile nok. Når elevene kommer med filmsnutter de
71 ønsker og jobbe med, så godtar ikke programmene filene, og når elevene
72 jobber med redigering bare krasjer programmene uten forvarsel. Det er
73 for vanskelig å få noe som bare fungerer ut av boksen her. Når en elev
74 plugger inn et videokamera eller fotoapparat så er det alltid noe som
75 ikke vil fungere. Programmene godtar ikke format, godtar ikke
76 kameraet, osv., osv. Det er dessverre med på og dra ned en positiv
77 opplevelse av bruk av fri programvare.&lt;/p&gt;

79 &lt;p&gt;Man må ofte bruke flere en et video redigerings program før og få
80 fullført en ønsket oppgave.&lt;/p&gt;

82 &lt;p&gt;Eksempel:&lt;/p&gt;

84 &lt;p&gt;Hvis det ene programmet ikke vil ta i mot videofilen klarer et
85 annet det, men det programmet som klarer det kan ikke gjøre de samme
86 oppgavene som det programmet som ikke ville ta i mot filen,
87 Tilsvarende er det med foto, man må bruke flere programmer for å få
88 et ferdig resultat. Til dags dato har jeg enda ikke funnet et video-
89 og fotoprogram som kan tilfredstillende fullføre en oppgave.&lt;/p&gt;

91 &lt;p&gt;Så man kan klare og fullføre en oppgave, men i verste fall må man
92 innom 3-4 programmer for å få det til. Så jeg har enda ikke til dags
93 dato sett at et program fungere 100% til alt.&lt;/p&gt;

95 &lt;p&gt;Det programmet jeg har best erfaring til er
96 &lt;a href=&quot;http://cinelerra.org/&quot;&gt;cinelerra&lt;/a&gt;, men dessverre har det
97 også tendenser og krasje av og til uten grunn.&lt;/p&gt;

99 Lydsystemet kan også være et mareritt. Konkret snakker jeg om når du
100 bruker for eksempel et smartboard, så følger det med USB-lydkort på
101 disse. Problemet ligger her i at systemet ikke vil velge rett
102 lydkort, så man må inn med padevchooser for å sette opp PulseAudio
103 til og velge at USB-lydkortet skal brukes. Det blir for tungvindt for
104 lærene, de ønsker at ting skal fungere med en gang. (min løsning på
105 det problemet ble at jeg måtte deaktivere lydkortet som fantes på
106 maskinen) men da må man bestandig slå på smartboard-tavla.

116 Jeg tror det må bevisstgjøring av Skolene til, dvs. reklamere høylytt
117 og fortelle og vise de andre skolene at frie programvarer faktisk
118 fungere. Jeg trur faktisk mange ikke vet at det finnes frie

189 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Who are you, and how do you spend your days?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

191 &lt;p&gt;My name is Jürgen Leibner, I&#39;m 49 years old and living in
192 Bielefeld, a town in northern Germany. I worked nearly 20 years as
193 certified engineer in the department for plant design and layout of an
194 international company for machinery and equipment. Since 2011 I&#39;m a
195 certified technical writer (tekom e.V.) and doing technical
196 documentations for a steam turbine manufacturer. From April this year
197 I will manage the department of technical documentation at a
198 manufacturer of automation and assembly line engineering.&lt;/p&gt;

200 &lt;p&gt;My first contact with linux was around 1993. Since that time I used
201 it at work and at home repeatedly but not exclusively as I do now at
202 home since 2006.&lt;/p&gt;

204 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux/Debian Edu
205 project?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

207 &lt;p&gt;Once a day in the early year of 2001 when I wanted to fetch my
208 daughter from primary school, there was a teacher sitting in the
209 middle of 20 old computers trying to boot them and he failed. I helped
210 him to get them booting. That was seen by the school director and she
211 asked me if I would like to manage that the school gets all that old
212 computers in use. I answered: &quot;Yes&quot;.&lt;/p&gt;

214 &lt;p&gt;Some weeks later every of the 10 classrooms had one computer
215 running Windows98. I began to collect old computers and equipment as
216 gifts and installed the first computer room with a peer-to-peer
217 network. I did my work at school without being payed in my spare time
218 and with a lot of fun. About one year later the school was connected
219 to Internet and a local area network was installed in the school
220 building. That was the time to have a server and I knew it must be a
221 Linux server to be able to fulfil all the wishes of the teachers and
222 being able to do this in a transparent and economic way, without extra
223 costs for things like licence and software. So I searched for a
224 school server system running under Linux and I found a couple of
225 people nearby who founded &#39;skolelinux.de&#39;. It was the Skolelinux
226 prerelease 32 I first tried out for being used at the school. I
227 managed the IT of that school until the municipal authority took over
228 the IT management and centralised the services for all schools in
229 Bielefeld in December of 2006.&lt;/p&gt;

231 &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux/Debian
232 Edu?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

234 &lt;p&gt;When I&#39;m looking back to the beginning, there were other advantages
235 for me as today.&lt;/p&gt;

237 &lt;p&gt;In the past there were advantages like:&lt;/p&gt;

241 &lt;li&gt;I don&#39;t need to buy it so it generates no costs to the school as
242 they had little money to spent for computers and software.&lt;/li&gt;

244 &lt;li&gt;It has a licence which grands all rights to use it without
245 cost.&lt;/li&gt;

247 &lt;li&gt;It was more able to fit all requirements of a server system for
248 schools than a Microsoft server system, even if there are only Windows
249 clients because of it&#39;s preconfigured overall concept of being a
250 infrastructure solution and community for schools, not only a
251 server&lt;/li&gt;

253 &lt;li&gt;I was able to configure the server to the needs of the
254 school.&lt;/li&gt;

258 &lt;p&gt;Today some of the advantages has been lost, changed or new ones

266 &lt;li&gt;They are today mostly managed from central IT departments which
267 have own concepts which often do not fit to Debian Edu concepts
268 because they are to close to Microsoft ideology.&lt;/li&gt;

270 &lt;li&gt;With the Squeeze version of Debian Edu which now uses GOsa² for
271 management I feel more able to manage the daily tasks than with the
272 interfaces used in the past.&lt;/li&gt;

274 &lt;li&gt;It is more modular than in the past and fits even better to the
275 different needs.&lt;/li&gt;

277 &lt;li&gt;The documentation is usable and gets better every day.&lt;/li&gt;

279 &lt;li&gt;More people than ever before are using Debian Edu all over the
280 world and so the community, which is an very important part I think,
281 is sharing knowledge and minds.&lt;/li&gt;

284 solved today by Debian Edu. &lt;/li&gt;

294 their product portfolio for serving schools with concepts or even
295 whole municipality areas.&lt;/li&gt;

298 enough lobbyists which promote free and open software to
299 politicians.&lt;/li&gt;

307 &lt;p&gt;I use Debian stable on my home server and on my little desktop
308 computer. On my laptop I use Debian testing/sid. The applications I
309 use on my laptop and my desktop are Open/Libre-office, Iceweasel,
310 KMail, DigiKam, Amarok, Dolphin, okular and all the other programs I
311 need from the KDE environment. On console I use newsbeuter, mutt,
312 screen, irssi and all the other famous and useful tools.&lt;/p&gt;

314 &lt;p&gt;My home server provides mail services with exim, dovecot, roundcube
315 and mutt over ssh on the console, file services with samba, NFS,
316 rsync, web services with apache, moinmoin-wiki, multimedia services
317 with gallery2 and mediatomb and database services with MySQL for me
318 and the whole family. I probably forgot something.&lt;/p&gt;

350 oss på utsiden av kartellet er tilgjengelighet av det som burde være
351 felleskapets og innbyggernes kart dårlig.&lt;/p&gt;

353 &lt;p&gt;Bruksvilkårene til kartene fra medlemmene i Norge Digital hindrer
354 nyskapning og selv om en er villig til å betale den ublu prisen som
355 forlanges får en fortsatt ikke tilgang til kartdata uten
356 bruksbegresninger. Derfor bruker jeg heller tid på å gjøre
357 fribrukskartet OpenStreetmap bedre. Der fremmer bruksvilkårene
358 nyskapning og lar meg skape nye tjenester uten å måtte søke om
359 tillatelse fra det offentlige.&lt;/p&gt;

361 &lt;p&gt;En annen problemstilling er jo sikkerhet til fjells og til sjøs.
362 Mon tro hvor mange ulykker på sjøen som kunne vært unngått hvis
363 sjøkartdata var tilgjengelig uten bruksbegrensninger, slik at enhver
364 med GPS eller kartplotter tilnærmet kostnadsfritt kunne sikre seg mest
365 mulig oppdaterte sjøkart? Det hjelper jo ikke at offentlige etater
366 har enkel tilgang til sjøkartene når det samme ikke gjelder hver
367 båtkaptein og småbåtfører. Jeg tror samfunnet som helhet hadde tjent
368 på å unngå kostnadene ved disse ulykkene ved å tvinge sjøkartverket
369 til å publisere sine kartdata på Internet uten bruksbegresninger.&lt;/p&gt;

383 common hair/beard cutter, bought in a electrical shop here in Norway.
384 But the last ones have not really been up to the task. My last
385 cutter, some model from Braun, could only cut a few of my hairs at the

533 willing to pay will get a license. Both sound great in theory. In
534 practice, to get such license one need to be able to count users, and
535 be able to pay a small amount of money per unit or user. By
536 definition, users of free software do not need to register their use.
537 So counting users or units is not possible for free software projects.
538 And given that people will use the software without handing any money
539 to the author, it is not really economically possible for a free
540 software author to pay a small amount of money to license the rights
541 to implement a standard when the income available is zero. The result
542 in these situations is that free software are locked out from
543 implementing standards with RAND terms.&lt;/p&gt;

545 &lt;p&gt;Because of this, when I see someone claiming the terms of a
546 standard is reasonable and non-discriminatory, all I can think of is
547 how this really is non-reasonable and discriminatory. Because free
548 software developers are working in a global market, it does not really
549 help to know that software patents are not supposed to be enforceable
550 in Norway. The patent regimes in other countries affect us even here.
551 I really hope the people behind the standard directory will pay more
552 attention to these issues in the future.&lt;/p&gt;
