Etter at NRK
+nektet
+"in Good Standing" befant seg.
+
+
+MPEG-LA.

Subject: Do NRK have a license agreement with MPEG-LA?
-My name is Andreas Mundt, I grew up in south Germany. After
-studying Physics I spent several years at university doing research in
-Quantum Optics. After that I worked some years in an optics company.
-Finally I decided to turn over a new leaf in my life and started
-teaching 10 to 19 years old kids at school. I teach math, physics,
-information technology and science/technology.
+Hi. I have a small question for you, that I hope it is OK that I
+ask.
-How did you get in contact with the Skolelinux/Debian Edu
-project?
+Is there any license agreements between MPEG-LA and NRK, <URL:
+http://www.nrk.no/ >, the
+Norwegian national broadcasting cooperation? I am not sure if they
+need one, and am just curious if such agreeement exist.
-Already before I switched to teaching, I followed the Debian Edu
-project because of my interest in education and Debian. Within the
-qualification/training period for the teaching, I started
-contributing.
+The postal address is
-What do you see as the advantages of Skolelinux/Debian
-Edu?

-The advantages of Debian Edu are the well known name, the
-out-of-the-box philosophy and of course the great free software of the
-Debian Project!
+if it make it easier for you to locate such agreement.
-What do you see as the disadvantages of Skolelinux/Debian
-Edu?
+Can you tell me how many entities in Norway have an agreement with
+MPEG-LA, and the name of these entities?
-As every coin has two sides, the out-of-the-box philosophy has its
-downside, too. In my opinion, it is hard to modify and tweak the
-setup, if you need or want that. Further more, it is not easily
-possible to upgrade the system to a new release. It takes much too
-long after a Debian release to prepare the -Edu release, perhaps
-because the number of developers working on the core of the code is
-rather small and often busy elsewhere.

+
+Dear Mr. Reinholdtsen,
+
+Thank you for your message and for your interest in MPEG LA. We
+appreciate hearing from you and I will be happy to assist you.
+
+To begin, I will assume that you are referring to AVC/H.264
+technology in your message below, as this technology is commonly used
+in the transmission of video content. In that case, please allow me
+to briefly summarize the coverage provided by our AVC Patent Portfolio
+License.
+
+Our AVC License provides coverage for end products and video
+services that make use of AVC/H.264 technology. Accordingly, the
+party offering such end products and video to End Users concludes the
+AVC License and is responsible for paying the applicable royalties
+associated with the end products/video they offer.
+
+While the Norwegian Broadcast Corporation (NRK) is not currently a
+Licensee to MPEG LA's AVC License (or any other Portfolio License
+offered by MPEG LA), if NRK offers AVC Video to End Users for
+remuneration (for example, Title-by-Title, Subscription, Free
+Television, or Internet Broadcast AVC Video), then NRK will need to
+conclude the AVC License and may be responsible for paying applicable
+royalties associated with the AVC Video it distributes.
+
+Today I will send you a FedEx package containing a copy of our AVC
+License for your review. You should receive the License document
+within the next few days.
+
+Meanwhile, MPEG LA currently has several Norwegian Licensees that
+can be found under the "Licensees" header within the respective
+portion of our website. For example, you may find our list of
+Licensees in Good Standing to our AVC License in the AVC portion of
+our website,
+http://www.mpegla.com/main/programs/AVC/Pages/Licensees.aspx
+
+I hope the above information is helpful. If you have additional
+questions or need further assistance with the AVC License, please feel
+free to contact me directly. I look forward to hearing from you again
+soon.

I am only using non-free software if I am forced to and run Debian
-on all my machines. For documents I prefer LaTeX and PGF/TikZ, then
-mutt and iceweasel for email respectively web browsing. At school I
-have Arduino and Fritzing in use for a micro controller project.

+The part about sending a FedEx package confused me, though. I did not
+
give you my address, nor am I associated with NRK in any way, so I hope
+
you did not try to send me a package using the address of NRK. If you
+
would send me the Internet address of to the document, it would be more
+
useful to me to be able to download it as an electronic document.

+siste epost. Får håpe noen likevel følger opp "FedEx-pakken". For å
+min epost tidsnok.

One of the major problems is the vendor lock-in from top to bottom:
-Especially in combination with ignorant government employees and
-politicians, this works out great for the "market-leader". The school
-administration here in Baden-Wuerttemberg is occupied by that vendor.
-Documents have to be prepared in non-free, proprietary formats. Even
-free browsers do not work for the school administration. Publishers
-of school books provide software only for proprietary platforms.
-
-
To change this, political work is very important. Parts of the
-political spectrum have become aware of the problem in the last years.
-However it takes quite some time and courageous politicians to 'free'
-the system. There is currently some discussion about "Open Data" and
-"Free/Open Standards". I am not sure if all the involved parties have
-a clue about the potential of these ideas, and probably only a
-fraction takes them seriously. However it might slowly make free
-software and the philosophy behind it more known and popular.
