 173 Commons.  This time it is a book filled with interviews and histories
 174 from those around the globe making a living using Creative
 175 Commons.&lt;/p&gt;

 177 &lt;p&gt;Yesterday, after many months of hard work by several volunteer
 178 translators, the first draft of a Norwegian Bokmål edition of the book

 180 was complete.  The Spanish translation is also complete, while the
 181 Dutch, Polish, German and Ukraine edition need a lot of work.  Get in

 187 was going to make a Spanish edition of the book.  I noticed, and
 188 offered some input on how to make a book, based on my experience with
 189 translating the

 194 long story short, we ended up working on a Bokmål edition, and now the

 196 Ole-Erik Yrvin, Ingrid Yrvin, Allan Nordhøy and myself.  The first
 197 proof reading is almost done, and only the second and third proof
 198 reading remains.  We will also need to translate the 14 figures and
 199 create a book cover.  Once it is done we will publish the book on
 200 paper, as well as in PDF, ePub and possibly Mobi formats.&lt;/p&gt;

 202 &lt;p&gt;The book itself originates as a manuscript on Google Docs, is
 203 downloaded as ODT from there and converted to Markdown using pandoc.
 204 The Markdown is modified by a script before is converted to DocBook
 205 using pandoc.  The DocBook is modified again using a script before it
 206 is used to create a Gettext POT file for translators.  The translated
 207 PO file is then combined with the earlier mentioned DocBook file to
 208 create a translated DocBook file, which finally is given to dblatex to
 209 create the final PDF.  The end result is a set of editions of the
 210 manuscript, one English and one for each of the translations.&lt;/p&gt;

 291 a French and Norwegian translation of the classic

 299 project, I just earn the warm fuzzy feeling that the text is available
 300 for a wider audience and more people can learn why the Creative

 304 Lulu.com, which take care of payment, printing and shipping.  Much to
 305 my surprise, the English edition is selling better than both the

 622                 <description>&lt;p&gt;Today, finally, my first printed draft edition of the Norwegian
 623 translation of Free Culture I have been working on for the last few
 624 years arrived in the mail.  I had to fake a cover to get the interior
 625 printed, and the exterior of the book look awful, but that is
 626 irrelevant at this point.  I asked for a printed pocket book version
 627 to get an idea about the font sizes and paper format as well as how
 628 good the figures and images look in print, but also to test what the
 629 pocket book version would look like.  After receiving the 500 page
 630 pocket book, it became obvious to me that that pocket book size is too
 631 small for this book.  I believe the book is too thick, and several
 632 tables and figures do not look good in the size they get with that
 633 small page sizes.  I believe I will go with the 5.5x8.5 inch size
 634 instead.  A surprise discovery from the paper version was how bad the
 635 URLs look in print.  They are very hard to read in the colophon page.
 636 The URLs are red in the PDF, but light gray on paper.  I need to
 637 change the color of links somehow to look better.  But there is a
 638 printed book in my hand, and it feels great. :)&lt;/p&gt;

 841 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
 842 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
 843 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
 844 in sync.  And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
 845 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
 846 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
 847 edit the documentation using a web browser.  We also want it to be
 848 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
 849 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
 850 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
 851 goals.&lt;/p&gt;

 853 &lt;p&gt;We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the

 856 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
 857 for each chapter, and finally one &quot;collection page&quot; gluing all the
 858 chapters together into one large web page (aka

 860 AllInOne page&lt;/a&gt;).  The AllInOne page is the one used for further
 861 processing and translations.  Thanks to the fact that the

 865 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
 866 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
 867 manual.  This process also download images and transform image
 868 references to use the locally downloaded images.  The generated
 869 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
 870 using the &lt;tt&gt;documentation/scripts/get_manual&lt;/tt&gt; program, and the
 871 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
 872 a handfull of images.  The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
 873 and epub versions of the English manual.  This is the basic step of
 874 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
 875 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
 876 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.&lt;/p&gt;

 878 &lt;p&gt;But English documentation is not enough for us.  We want translated
 879 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
 880 track the English original.  For this we use the
 881 &lt;a href=&quot;http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html&quot;&gt;poxml&lt;/a&gt; package,
 882 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
 883 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
 884 translation tools used by those translating free software.  The pot
 885 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
 886 files), which the translations update with the native language
 887 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
 888 original.  The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
 889 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
 890 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
 891 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml).  This translated (or partly
 892 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
 893 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
 894 of the documentation.&lt;/p&gt;

 963 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
 964 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.&lt;/p&gt;

 967 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle

1099 easily available for current and future generations.  Some of the
1100 people participating in the discussion contacted the author, and
1101 reported back 2013-03-19 that the author was OK with releasing the
1102 short story using a &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.creativecommons.org/&quot;&gt;Creative
1103 Commons&lt;/a&gt; license.  The text was quickly scanned and OCR-ed, and we
1104 were ready to start on the editing and typesetting.&lt;/p&gt;

1106 &lt;p&gt;As I already had some experience formatting text in my project to
1107 provide a Norwegian version of the Free Culture book by Lawrence
1108 Lessig, I chipped in and set up a
1109 &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.docbook.org/&quot;&gt;DocBook&lt;/a&gt; processing framework to
1110 generate PDF, HTML and EPUB version of the short story.  The tools to
1111 transform DocBook to different formats are already in my Linux

1125 short story to look like the original, and that require fairly good
1126 control over the layout.  The original short story have three
1127 parts/scenes separated by a single horizontally centred star (*), and
1128 the paragraphs do not contain only flowing text, but dialogs and text
1129 that started on a new line in the middle of the paragraph.&lt;/p&gt;

1131 &lt;p&gt;I initially solved the first challenge by using a paragraph with a
1132 single star in it, ie &amp;lt;para&amp;gt;*&amp;lt;/para&amp;gt;, but it made sure a
1133 placeholder indicated where the scene shifted.  This did not look too

1331 this mess.  Norwegian is not one, but two written variants.  The
1332 variants are Norwegian Nynorsk and Norwegian Bokmål.  There are three
1333 two letter language codes associated with these languages, Norwegian
1334 is &#39;no&#39;, Norwegian Nynorsk is &#39;nn&#39; and Norwegian Bokmål is &#39;nb&#39;.
1335 Historically the &#39;no&#39; language code was used for Norwegian Bokmål, but
1336 many years ago this was found to be å bad idea, and the recommendation
1337 is to use the most specific language code instead, to avoid confusion.
1338 In the transition period it is a good idea to make sure &#39;no&#39; was an
1339 alias for &#39;nb&#39;.&lt;/p&gt;

1529 byggesystemet over og lager PDF og EPUB-utgave av den oversatte
1530 teksten.  Resultatet kan ses i Github-prosjektet.  For å komme raskt
1531 igang har jeg brukt maskinoversettelse av alle tekstbitene fra engelsk
1532 til norsk, noe som grovoversatte ca. 1300 av de ca. 1700 tekstbitene
1533 boken består av.  Jeg håper nå at flere kan bidra med å få
1534 oversettelsen på plass, slik at teksten kan være klar i løpet av
1535 høsten.  Når alt er oversatt må teksten gjennomgås for feil og
1536 konsistent språk.  Totalt er det nok mange timer som trengs for å
1537 gjennomføre oversettelsen.&lt;/p&gt;

1540 stortingsrepresentanter og nesten like mange varamedlemmer bør få
1541 bøker, og estimert produduksjonskostnad for hver bok er rundt 6 EURO i
1542 følge et raskt estimat fra Lulu.  Jeg vet ennå ikke hvor mange sider
1543 det blir i størrelsen 5,5&quot; x 8.5&quot; (det er ca. 140 sider i A4-format),
1544 så jeg gjettet på 400 sider.  Jeg tror originalutgaven har nesten 400
1545 sider.  For 169*2 eksemplarer snakker vi om en trykkekostnad på
1546 ca. 2000 EURO, dvs. ca 15 000 NOK.  Det burde være mulig å finne en
1547 sponsor for å dekke en slik sum.  I tillegg kommer distribusjon og
1548 porto, som antagelig kommer på like mye.&lt;/p&gt;
