  14                 <description>&lt;p&gt;I am working on publishing yet another book related to Creative
  15 Commons.  This time it is a book filled with interviews and histories
  16 from those around the globe making a living using Creative
  17 Commons.&lt;/p&gt;

  19 &lt;p&gt;Yesterday, after many months of hard work by several volunteer
  20 translators, the first draft of a Norwegian Bokmål edition of the book
  21 &lt;a href=&quot;https://madewith.cc&quot;&gt;Made with Creative Commons from 2017&lt;/a&gt;
  22 was complete.  The Spanish translation is also complete, while the
  23 Dutch, Polish, German and Ukraine edition need a lot of work.  Get in
  24 touch if you want to help make those happen, or would like to
  25 translate into your mother tongue.&lt;/p&gt;

  27 &lt;p&gt;The whole book project started when
  28 &lt;a href=&quot;http://gwolf.org/node/4102&quot;&gt;Gunnar Wolf announced&lt;/a&gt; that he
  29 was going to make a Spanish edition of the book.  I noticed, and
  30 offered some input on how to make a book, based on my experience with
  31 translating the

  33 Culture&lt;/a&gt; and

  36 long story short, we ended up working on a Bokmål edition, and now the
  37 first rough translation is complete, thanks to the hard work of
  38 Ole-Erik Yrvin, Ingrid Yrvin, Allan Nordhøy and myself.  The first
  39 proof reading is almost done, and only the second and third proof
  40 reading remains.  We will also need to translate the 14 figures and
  41 create a book cover.  Once it is done we will publish the book on
  42 paper, as well as in PDF, ePub and possibly Mobi formats.&lt;/p&gt;

  44 &lt;p&gt;The book itself originates as a manuscript on Google Docs, is
  45 downloaded as ODT from there and converted to Markdown using pandoc.
  46 The Markdown in modified by a script before is converted to DocBook
  47 using pandoc.  The DocBook is modified again using a script before it
  48 is used to create a Gettext POT file for translators.  The translated
  49 PO file is then combined with the earlier mentioned DocBook file to
  50 create a translated DocBook file, which finally is given to dblatex to
  51 create the final PDF.  The end result is a set of editions of the
  52 manuscript, one English and one for each of the translations.&lt;/p&gt;

 133 a French and Norwegian translation of the classic

 136 known is the fact that due to the way I created the translations,

 138 because I already had created a new the PDF edition, I published it
 139 too.  The revenue from the books are sent to the Creative Commons
 140 Corporation.  In other words, I do not earn any money from this
 141 project, I just earn the warm fuzzy feeling that the text is available
 142 for a wider audience and more people can learn why the Creative
 143 Commons is needed.&lt;/p&gt;

 146 Lulu.com, which take care of payment, printing and shipping.  Much to
 147 my surprise, the English edition is selling better than both the
 148 French and Norwegian edition, despite the fact that it has been

 342 new edition of the English original.  I&#39;ve been in touch with the
 343 author during by work, and he said it was fine with him if I also
 344 published an English version.  So I decided to do so.  Today, I made

 414 I wanted to create a cover looking similar to the original cover of

 422 the cover yesterday evening.  I asked on the

 424 on Freenode for help and clues, and Marc Jeanmougin (Mc-) volunteered

 435 give a good idea about the inkscape operations to use to create the

 464                 <description>&lt;p&gt;Today, finally, my first printed draft edition of the Norwegian
 465 translation of Free Culture I have been working on for the last few
 466 years arrived in the mail.  I had to fake a cover to get the interior
 467 printed, and the exterior of the book look awful, but that is
 468 irrelevant at this point.  I asked for a printed pocket book version
 469 to get an idea about the font sizes and paper format as well as how
 470 good the figures and images look in print, but also to test what the
 471 pocket book version would look like.  After receiving the 500 page
 472 pocket book, it became obvious to me that that pocket book size is too
 473 small for this book.  I believe the book is too thick, and several
 474 tables and figures do not look good in the size they get with that
 475 small page sizes.  I believe I will go with the 5.5x8.5 inch size
 476 instead.  A surprise discovery from the paper version was how bad the
 477 URLs look in print.  They are very hard to read in the colophon page.
 478 The URLs are red in the PDF, but light gray on paper.  I need to
 479 change the color of links somehow to look better.  But there is a
 480 printed book in my hand, and it feels great. :)&lt;/p&gt;

 483 store behind the book, and collect the last corrections from the proof

 678 administrators and other users that contain useful tips for setting up
 679 and maintaining a Debian Edu installation.  This text is about how the
 680 text processing of this manual is handled in the project.&lt;/p&gt;

 682 &lt;p&gt;One goal of the project is to provide information in the native
 683 language of its users, and for this we need to handle translations.
 684 But we also want to make sure each language contain the same
 685 information, so for this we need a good way to keep the translations
 686 in sync.  And we want it to be easy for our users to improve the
 687 documentation, avoiding the need to learn special formats or tools to
 688 contribute, and the obvious way to do this is to make it possible to
 689 edit the documentation using a web browser.  We also want it to be
 690 easy for translators to keep the translation up to date, and give them
 691 help in figuring out what need to be translated. Here is the list of
 692 tools and the process we have found trying to reach all these
 693 goals.&lt;/p&gt;

 695 &lt;p&gt;We maintain the authoritative source of our manual in the
 696 &lt;a href=&quot;https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/&quot;&gt;Debian
 697 wiki&lt;/a&gt;, as several wiki pages written in English.  It consist of one
 698 front page with references to the different chapters, several pages
 699 for each chapter, and finally one &quot;collection page&quot; gluing all the
 700 chapters together into one large web page (aka
 701 &lt;a href=&quot;https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Wheezy/AllInOne&quot;&gt;the
 702 AllInOne page&lt;/a&gt;).  The AllInOne page is the one used for further
 703 processing and translations.  Thanks to the fact that the

 705 wiki.debian.org support exporting pages in
 706 &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.docbook.org/&quot;&gt;the Docbook format&lt;/a&gt;, we can fetch
 707 the list of pages to export using the raw version of the AllInOne
 708 page, loop over each of them to generate a Docbook XML version of the
 709 manual.  This process also download images and transform image
 710 references to use the locally downloaded images.  The generated
 711 Docbook XML files are slightly broken, so some post-processing is done
 712 using the &lt;tt&gt;documentation/scripts/get_manual&lt;/tt&gt; program, and the
 713 result is a nice Docbook XML file (debian-edu-wheezy-manual.xml) and
 714 a handfull of images.  The XML file can now be used to generate PDF, HTML
 715 and epub versions of the English manual.  This is the basic step of
 716 our process, making PDF (using dblatex), HTML (using xsltproc) and
 717 epub (using dbtoepub) version from Docbook XML, and the resulting files
 718 are placed in the debian-edu-doc-en binary package.&lt;/p&gt;

 720 &lt;p&gt;But English documentation is not enough for us.  We want translated
 721 documentation too, and we want to make it easy for translators to
 722 track the English original.  For this we use the
 723 &lt;a href=&quot;http://packages.qa.debian.org/p/poxml.html&quot;&gt;poxml&lt;/a&gt; package,
 724 which allow us to transform the English Docbook XML file into a
 725 translation file (a .pot file), usable with the normal gettext based
 726 translation tools used by those translating free software.  The pot
 727 file is used to create and maintain translation files (several .po
 728 files), which the translations update with the native language
 729 translations of all titles, paragraphs and blocks of text in the
 730 original.  The next step is combining the original English Docbook XML
 731 and the translation file (say debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.po), to
 732 create a translated Docbook XML file (in this case
 733 debian-edu-wheezy-manual.nb.xml).  This translated (or partly
 734 translated, if the translation is not complete) Docbook XML file can
 735 then be used like the original to create a PDF, HTML and epub version
 736 of the documentation.&lt;/p&gt;

 738 &lt;p&gt;The translators use different tools to edit the .po files.  We
 739 recommend using

 752 this regard).  For this we transform the original PNG images to the
 753 needed density and format during build, and have a way to provide
 754 translated images by storing translated versions in
 755 images/$LANGUAGECODE/.  I am a bit unsure about the details here.  The
 756 package maintainers know more.&lt;/p&gt;

 787 law.  Yesterday, I finally broken the 90% mark, when counting the
 788 number of strings to translate.  Due to real life constraints, I have
 789 not had time to work on it since March, but when the summer broke out,
 790 I found time to work on it again.  Still lots of work left, but the
 791 first draft is nearing completion.  I created a graph to show the

 801 English docbook version with the paper version.  Last, the colophon
 802 page with ISBN numbers etc need to be wrapped up before the release is
 803 done.  I should also figure out how to get correct Norwegian sorting
 804 of the index pages.  All docbook tools I have tried so far (xmlto,
 805 docbook-xsl, dblatex) get the order of symbols and the special
 806 Norwegian letters ÆØÅ wrong.&lt;/p&gt;

 808 &lt;p&gt;There is still need for translators and people with docbook
 809 knowledge, to be able to get a good looking book (I still struggle
 810 with dblatex, xmlto and docbook-xsl) as well as to do the draft
 811 translation and proof reading.  And I would like the figures to be
 812 redrawn as SVGs to make it easy to translate them.  Any SVG master
 813 around?  There are also some legal terms that are unfamiliar to me.

 873 lisens, og novellen utgis av EFN med en Creative Commons (CC)

 875 eller brukerne innebærer dette at de får en klar og standardisert
 876 beskjed om hvilke rettigheter de har til å dele novellen videre med
 877 andre. For forfatteren innebærer dette økt synlighet og

 879 søkemotorer og nettlesere inneholder egne søkevalg for CC-lisenser, og
 880 mange brukere søker etter verk som de vet de kan dele og bruke på
 881 lovlig vis.&lt;/p&gt;

 883 &lt;p&gt;EFN oppfordrer andre forfattere om å gi ut sine gamle tekster med
 884 en fribrukslisens, slik at tekstene ikke blir glemt og for å stimulere

 886 og utlegging på nett, i den grad det finnes kapasitet blant EFNs

 941 easily available for current and future generations.  Some of the
 942 people participating in the discussion contacted the author, and
 943 reported back 2013-03-19 that the author was OK with releasing the
 944 short story using a &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.creativecommons.org/&quot;&gt;Creative
 945 Commons&lt;/a&gt; license.  The text was quickly scanned and OCR-ed, and we
 946 were ready to start on the editing and typesetting.&lt;/p&gt;

 948 &lt;p&gt;As I already had some experience formatting text in my project to
 949 provide a Norwegian version of the Free Culture book by Lawrence
 950 Lessig, I chipped in and set up a
 951 &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.docbook.org/&quot;&gt;DocBook&lt;/a&gt; processing framework to
 952 generate PDF, HTML and EPUB version of the short story.  The tools to
 953 transform DocBook to different formats are already in my Linux

 967 short story to look like the original, and that require fairly good
 968 control over the layout.  The original short story have three
 969 parts/scenes separated by a single horizontally centred star (*), and
 970 the paragraphs do not contain only flowing text, but dialogs and text
 971 that started on a new line in the middle of the paragraph.&lt;/p&gt;

 973 &lt;p&gt;I initially solved the first challenge by using a paragraph with a
 974 single star in it, ie &amp;lt;para&amp;gt;*&amp;lt;/para&amp;gt;, but it made sure a
 975 placeholder indicated where the scene shifted.  This did not look too
 976 good without the centring.  The next approach was to create a new

1012 linebreak/paragraph challenge, so I ended up creating a new processor

1372 teksten.  Resultatet kan ses i Github-prosjektet.  For å komme raskt
1373 igang har jeg brukt maskinoversettelse av alle tekstbitene fra engelsk
1374 til norsk, noe som grovoversatte ca. 1300 av de ca. 1700 tekstbitene
1375 boken består av.  Jeg håper nå at flere kan bidra med å få
1376 oversettelsen på plass, slik at teksten kan være klar i løpet av
1377 høsten.  Når alt er oversatt må teksten gjennomgås for feil og
1378 konsistent språk.  Totalt er det nok mange timer som trengs for å
1379 gjennomføre oversettelsen.&lt;/p&gt;

1382 stortingsrepresentanter og nesten like mange varamedlemmer bør få
1383 bøker, og estimert produduksjonskostnad for hver bok er rundt 6 EURO i
1384 følge et raskt estimat fra Lulu.  Jeg vet ennå ikke hvor mange sider
1385 det blir i størrelsen 5,5&quot; x 8.5&quot; (det er ca. 140 sider i A4-format),
1386 så jeg gjettet på 400 sider.  Jeg tror originalutgaven har nesten 400
1387 sider.  For 169*2 eksemplarer snakker vi om en trykkekostnad på
1388 ca. 2000 EURO, dvs. ca 15 000 NOK.  Det burde være mulig å finne en
1389 sponsor for å dekke en slik sum.  I tillegg kommer distribusjon og
1390 porto, som antagelig kommer på like mye.&lt;/p&gt;
